  1. If I'm wrong, I'll blame my daughter as she said he posted on his Instagram.

From what I understand, Logan Ashton from Buford, Ga and Stanford is transferring to UTC with 3 years of eligibility remaining.    Logan was a 2 time Georgia State champ and 2 time runner up.  If my memory serves me correctly, both his losses in the finals were to 4-timer Caden McCrary who is now wrestling at North Carolina.

He was a NCAA qualifier this year...won his pigtail and then lost to #1 seed Suriano of Michigan and then 3-1 to #16 seed Hildebrandt of Penn State.

Ha ha would be fun though.  I am still aggravated about a 3 day tourney with a 16 man bracket.  We need to do something that’s worth the time and money for a the kids and fans.

that would be the most exciting tri that TN has seen in my opinion.

I can't remember the year it happened, but one of the best duals I can remember was when Bradley was rolling had won state and Parkview was the top dog in Georgia.  They had a dual prior to a UTC match and it was awesome.  Be cool to do that today with the top teams from Tennessee and tops from Georgia....maybe a Baylor, Cleveland, Camden County, Buford deal.

And back when Coach Ramos was still around at Collins Hill they'd roll right into Freestyle after the state tournament. Practices were open to all schools too.  One year had a couple of AA's from Iowa run the practices.

Yeah, there are to many division in GA also, watered down the competition some. Yes, TN has had 1 NC with Leen and a RU with Simpson. We have had a few AA's but few and far between. I don't think GA has had a ton of AA's either, but of course I haven't done a ton of reading up on them lately. Of course the south itself hasnt been a huge hotbed of wrestling, Florida is huge with population and I don't remember them having a ton of AA's, same with Bama, Louisiana and such. Seems we concentrate more of our athletes in football and a other sports besides wrestling, which is a huge shame.

I think GA is up to maybe 12 or 13 D1 AA's.......I think last few are Peter Yates (3x), Ryan Millhof, Sean Russell, Chip Ness (2x), and Daniel Bullard. Taylor Lujan, of UNI, most likely would be and AA had the tournament not been cancelled as he was #1/#2 ranked going in.  Got a chance with a few spread around the country this year. I don't follow it as closely as I used too.

We are in a state that rarely produces any college All-Americans in comparison to a state let’s say like Georgia. That’s a fact a hard fact to swallow but a fact. I mean college All-Americans on any Division level… We should stop talking about consolidating  one state championship an start making sure we the coaches are preparing our athletes not just to get a scholarship D1, NAIA, D2, D3, and  juco but to actually start on said teams, and then compete on the next level and bring some honors home to TN. If you want to consolidate  something We need to be pulling together in the off season training more to get these kids ready for the next level success. Why? So those kids can come back coach and raise the level of wrestling. Y’all complain about Georgia but they produce more all-Americans then we do across all the college levels…

I complain about Georgia because I live there, assisted with a fairly successful program, and also helped run the state tournaments for several years.  When we moved here there were 5 classifications and now there are 7.  Georgia has still never produced a NCAA D1 National Champ and I think only had 1 reach the finals....Charlie Heard.  My nephew's teammate at Baylor did pretty well....Jordan Leen. I do like the USA Wrestling program that's here for the youth.

Don’t forget that the NAIA, D2 and D3 schools were allowed to compete in the D1 tournament until the NCAA changed the rules. Gray Simons was a 4X NAIA national champion and 3X NCAA champion for Lock Haven. At that time the NCAA did not allow freshmen to compete on the varsity level.

Fairly certain Randy Batten, of UTC, was 3 time D2 National Champ (75-78) and competed in the NCAA D1 tournament.  I know at least once he was one match from AA.

  6. On the crowning of too many state champions....check out this quote from the GHSA web site:

"The 2022 GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships were held February 10-12 at the Macon Centerplex. Congratulations to the 108 individual state champions in boys & girls divisions and to all the competitors.  The team winners were: Camden County (7A), Buford (6A), Cass (5A), West Laurens (4A), Gilmer (3A), Lovett (2A), and Trion (1A)."

The way ours is set up, the sectional will be an 8 man bracket.  I could be wrong for regions 7 and 8, but I believe even the worst case scenario of drive time would still be manageable for a morning trip; granted the host school could most likely push the start time of the tournament closer to late-morning/mid-day given it'll be such a small tournament.

I could be wrong because I've been out of working the GA state tournament for a while, but I'm pretty sure for at least the larger classifications here the sectional brackets here are 16 man.  And I mentioned the hotel because for a team in Gwinnett like Collins Hill or Mountain View their sectional is often in Camden county or down in Valdosta.  The driving force here for sectionals was the cost of the venue for state and the smaller brackets mean less days at the venue.

  8. Ok....commenting here because we (GA) moved to sectionals several years ago and from what I've seen there has been no drop in participation.  The plus, you can wrestle a 16 man bracket in a day.  The minus, you still probably have to get a hotel for wherever your sectional is located.  And if you want your kid to participate in a state tournament....come to Georgia.....since I think we have 7 of them. (kidding....don't blast me for that)

    Just a question...

Are we still thinking Baylor beats Cleveland in a dual this year? I would love to hear some opinions on possible matchups and dual outcomes. :hungry::popcorneater:

Make it a TRI meet......add in Camden County, GA.

Let’s be real....there are 7 divisions with 16 man brackets....Brookwood being the 3rd best team in CH division. You better be placing 11.

CH from back in the day.....most definitely could have competed, maybe beat Baylor..... no way they compete this year though.

I wanted to say...I don't like the 7 divisions either.  It may make sense for some sports, but they don't do it in GA. for lacrosse......so why not use those divisions for wrestling. Then it would be 1A-5A and 6A-7A.

I helped run the state tournament here for about 10 years.  The reason for the 16 man brackets was to shorten the length of the tournament and reduce cost of places like the Gwinnett Arena.  So, now we have sectionals ahead of the state tournament.  So you go region, section, state.....top 8 from each section to state.

And to keep focus on this thread........I also had a nephew that was a state champ at Baylor.  I'm guessing had he not gone to Baylor, he was probably zoned for Soddy Daisy.

Odd how Corday was at Buford last year??......where my youngest was....but she was a manager.

CH or Archer from back in the day would beat just about any team in the Southeast, now or back then.  They were both Top 10 teams Nationally.

The only team in GA this season that could compete with Baylor is Woodland-Cartersville.  That would be a fun dual to watch.

Agree.......I wasn't sure if Woodland and Baylor saw each other this year.   I remember when my son was a senior at CH......we lost to Blair.....33-30.

Maybe back in the day Collins Hill, but pretty sure Baylor would have slapped them around this season. Baylor was loaded and I think they would also have had a shot with Camden. As far as the rest of the state, Camden isn’t even close to the biggest school in your state and still would have the highest student population of any TN high school, Collins Hill would be about 1000 more than our highest Collierville. Now maybe if you said Jefferson I would agree, they of course would still be considered a big school in TN instead of a AAA school as they are in Georgia. But again still not sure which if any GA teams would have beaten baylor this year.

Collins Hill had 6 in the state finals and won 5 of them.....check out their new coaching staff.....and I think had 11 medalists......in 7A.
