  1. Animal....If you know a team that would like to have someone help out with their upper weights my son would like to give back to wrestling and volunteer to help a Knoxville team.

He is a junior at UT.....spent 10 years in the Collins Hill program and spent time at TWC with Arturo.

If someone could use some help he'd be happy to help. If he needs a background check or similar that's fine too.

Just shoot me an email at rossmcopeland@gmail.com

  2. In TN, we are allowed to schedule 18 dates. Only 2 two day tournaments, not including individual region and state. I know from my perspective it's hard to get these enormous records unless the majority of our dates are filled with quad meets and dual tournaments.

I understand.....but say take your 18 dates.....minus the 2 for a couple of individual tournaments......16...times 5 matches a day....you're at 80....even if you do 10 you're at 50. That's what some of these guys are doing. If you're wrestling in something like the Midwest Classic out in Kansas City, like CBHS did, you get 10 matches in 2 days. Its really popular here (GA) for the JV kids so that they get lots of matches.

  3. When I look at the wrestlers with the most career wins they seem to be from non traditional wrestling states like Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, etc... which leads to the following question. Would you be better off wrestling 40 or 45 matches in very tough tournaments (Iron Man, Beast of the East, Reno Tournament of Champions, etc...) over wrestling 75+ matches per season against average competition? Dan Gable was quoted as saying it was his job as the coach to get each of his wrestlers beat during the season and that wrestlers learn more from a defeat than a win. Do most states not have a limit on the number of tournaments and dual matches a team is allowed to schedule?

Keep in mind the guys from Alabama can be on varsity in 6th or 7th grade. The guys on there from Georgia are showing the popularity of wrestling only in dual tournaments.

  4. Last time I checked, sophomore Brandon Womack (Scottsboro) was 170-0. Started in 7th grade & three time state champ. Another 126 freshman from Carrolton Georgia (since rmc seems to appreciate that) Adcox? May be setting some records soon himself.

Probably talking about Tyler Askey.....from Northgate....going for his 3rd state championship.

  5. If you were curious about some other national records for wins check these out:

    Found these at:

  6. Manson never wrestled 60 matches. In fact I do not think he ever got to 50. His last high school loss was to Whit Dunning in the state finals his sophomore year. He had no losses his last two years which was something like 92 or 93 matches.

One of the best matches I ever saw....Manson vs. Thomas Knapp.......classic.

  7. I can't imagine we wrestle more in Georgia, but Brett Warrington and Anthony Fretwell had well over 70 wins in a season. Fretwell had 68 pins in a season according the University of Indiana site. I may be wrong but I think they both had 77 wins in a season. They both wrestled for Henry County which must use their 20 dates for mostly dual tournaments.

  8. ghouse-----given young Jack's success on the mat (has it really been four years since we were accusing TBSFBAG of trying to recruit Jack away from EFT by making Bear Kitten their paid huckster on this forum), particularly this past weekend at the tournament in question, there are a lot of us, including a certain former EFT wrestling coach, who question whether Jack is actually the "progeny" of BCB. We think he has more of Harry Thornton in him-----or maybe Raider 76.

BCB---are you guys coming up this way this way for the GP West Tournament at Brentwood? I believe I saw an earlier post where ghouse and the Bros were coming.

Congrats on Jack's win over one of RMC's boys. I know you will savor that more than even filming a match at Cleveland.

BCB had inside information................and needs to pay up!

Collins Hill Wins Competitive Soddy Daisy Showdown

Soddy Daisy, McCallie, Bradley Follow In Team Standings

    by John Hunt

    posted January 7, 2012

The annual Soddy Daisy Showdown attracted some of the best high school wrestling talent from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, but nobody was any more talented than the Eagles from Collins Hill.

These guys from Suwanee, Ga. have had great wrestling teams for years and the 2012 version appears to be no different.

They've won four straight Class 5-A state titles in Georgia and they showed why after putting seven individuals in the championship finals before winning five times.

The format for this event was unique in that the field was divided in half.

There were actually two tournaments going on at the same time where the winners from each faced each other for individual titles.

The second-place guys wrestled for third place and so on down the line.

Collins Hill claimed five individual champions while two finished second. They also had a third and a fourth-place finisher as they headed home with the first-place award after scoring 234.5 points.

Host Soddy Daisy finished a strong second with 195 points and three champions while McCallie scored 160 points to finish third in the 25-team field.

Bradley was fourth with 134.5 while Grissom and Independence tied for fifth with 119.5

Collins Hill has dominated competition at the Cleveland Duals for many years, but the Eagles chose to attend another tournament the same weekend.

Saturday was their first visit to the Showdown.

Josh Stephen has been the head coach for the last two years. He has a lot of coaching friends in this area, so it's a win-win situation for him.

"I love coming to Tennessee for wrestling tournaments as I have a lot of friends in this area and it's always good to renew old friendships.

"There's also always great competition and that's really why we come, but it went pretty well for us today as we did great by winning five of seven in the finals.

"We had a couple of tough losses at 126 and 170, but it was about what I expected. I'm real happy with Spencer Rickman at 138 as he beat a real good kid from McCallie.

"We've been out of town a lot this season and we're looking forward to staying at home next weekend and hopefully dominating our state duals again," he added.

Joining Rickman as winners for the Eagles were Sean Russell at 106, Ryan Millhof at 113, Drew Ferguson at 120 and Matthew Connell at 160.

Steven Bradtmueller finished second at 126 while Andrew Krawulski was the runner-up at 170.

McCoy Newberg of Independence beat Krawulski by a 6-5 final in double overtime and the two shared the Best Match award for their effort.

While Collins Hill had five champions, Soddy Daisy won all three of its matches in the finals.

Turbo Smith was victorious at 145 while Billy Swanson and Alex Seeley finished the tournament off on a positive note for the Trojans with wins at 220 and 285.

Seeley's win was especially gratifying as he beat Bradley's Patrick Benson, who is the defending state champion at that weight.

Other individual winners included Notre Dame's Jack Boone at 126. He was involved in a tight match with Bradtmueller, but used a cradle for a pin 23 seconds into the final period.

It was the only pin in the finals.

McCallie's Tim Westbrooks was the winner at 132 while Reagan Matlock of Maryville Heritge was first at 152.

Bryson Begley of Dobyns-Bennett and Nick Coffey of Brentwood claimed titles at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively.

While Collins Hill had nine finishers in the top four, Soddy Daisy also had nine while McCallie and Bradley had six each.

In addition to their three champions, Jacob Stevens (113), Gage Richmond (132), Campbell Lewis (138) and Brett Ervin (195) all finished third for Soddy Daisy.

Josh Deckelman (126) and Blaike Henry (170) both claimed fourth.

Tim Westbrooks was McCallie's only winner while Alex Ward was the runner-up at 138.

Adam Connell (120), Eliot Berz (170) and Nathan Hoodenpyle (182) were all third while James Westbrooks was fourth at 106.

Tyler Schuch (152) and Benson both finished second for Bradley while Toribio Navarro (106) and Jericho Crutcher (126) were both third.

Dakota Bromley and Jacob Bailey were fourth at 120 and 160, respectively.

Soddy Daisy coach Steve Henry was one of the happiest guys in the gym when the tournament ended.

It was hard to say if he was more pleased with his team's second-place finish or the fact that it was all finally over.

"We had some outstanding teams here today, maybe the best for a tournament in the state of Tennessee this year," Henry began.

"I'm so glad that Collins Hill came. They have a great program and another strong team. They're legit," he continued.

"I don't think I heard any complaints from anyone today and we have everyone on their way home before 9. We had 25 teams here today and they were all here for some great competition.

"That was a huge win for Alex Seeley. Ever since he was elected our team captain, he's been a different wrestler. He's my go-to guy when I need something, but I'm really proud of him today.

"It was different this year, but I liked the new format. Carol Goss and Brad Jackson did a great job making it work, but I'm just happy it's over," Henry added.

    FINAL TEAM STANDINGS: 1. Collins Hill 234.5; 2. Soddy Daisy 195; 3. McCallie 160; 4. Bradley 134.5; 5. Grissom and Independence tied with 119.5; 7. Science Hill 117.5; 8. Notre Dame 113.5; 9. Hewitt-Trussville 108; 10 Maryville Heritage 98.5.

  10. Ross, what about posting the 24th ranked team in the nation line-up.. If this is to much how about the 25 and 30 lbers?.

    Bcb iii :flower:

RMC, I only know of 1 mommy, and I can assure you that my life will not end up sleeping with da fishes, at least this weekend.. So Mrs Mitchell you will be safe to come to Soddy By God!!!!

Just a guess from what faced Brandon:

    106: Sean Russell

    113: Ryan Millhof

    120: Drew Ferguson-Mitchell

    126: Todd Headlam

    132: Steven Bradtmueller

    138: Spencer Rickman

    145: Not sure

    152: Anthony Codella

    160: Matthew Connell

    170: Aubrey Johnson

    182: Andrew Krawulski

    195: Tommy Donaldson

    220: Elijah Wellington

    285: Zach Carmin

7 state champions or placers in there....and 3 Super 32 placers.

  11. So there's been some talk of the Ryan the McCallie and the MBA that are this weekend but nothing of the Soddy...Does anybody have a list of teams so bcb can see what mommies are gonna be there so he can figure out what to wear?

    Collins Hill will be there.

  12. Well, well, well.... this is very conflicting from the story I got! Now trojanman12 I dont see the legitmate chance to beat Brandon. I'm sure soddy will handle everyone rather easily in the state of TN and maybe get in the bottom of the national rankings, but Brandon is a top ten team in the county every year.

I say he's right on. Brandon is not the team they have been in the past....yet. I was holding the weigh in sheets for most of the day and their roster is full of 9th and 10th grader wrestlers.

Again....I'm going from memory, but I think earlier this year they only beat Camden County, GA by 3....and that was with a full lineup. That's why Camden is ranked in AWN.

CH fell out of some rankings because of their 6th place finish at The Cougar Invitational, but in their defense they didn't have Ferguson and Brandtmueller injury defaulted during his first match. Ferguson finished 2nd in that same tournament last year.

Anyway....after saying all that..I wouldn't be surprised if Soddy-Daisy wins their tournament.....even with Collins Hill there this year.

  13. Here's the results borrowed from the Georgia forum......(Thanks to Fret and Coach Stephens)

3rd Place- Soddy Daisy vs. Baylor (didn't wrestle)

    1st Place- Brandon 38, Collins Hill 24

  14. does anybody know for sure. I would like to know how one of Tennessee's best matches up against Brandon. I spoke to a couple of people there and they said Soddy only won one weight class as far as they knew other than what Brandon forfeited? They did say they were watching several matches and could have missed some wins.

    For the Soddy-Daisy - Brandon....I thought it was 45 - 24.....I could be wrong.

    From what I recall against Baylor....Headlum wrestled at 126 and he's varsity.....they wrestled JV at: 145, 152, 170, 195, 220.......I'll post when I get the line up.

  15. RMC,

285: Zach Carmin (Collins Hill) fall Darron Lester (Brandon) :38

Soddy Daisy and Baylor were to wreslte for 3rd and 4th, but chose not to wrestle. I figured they'd probably seen enough of each other.

CH had a close semi with Baylor, but did insert 4 JV wreslters in the line up. I think SD's score was about the same as CH's against Brandon as Soddy Daisy and Baylor won their respective pools.

I haven't seen CH in a while and I think they've got some work to do on the upper end of the lineup if they want to compete with the likes of Brandon.

  17. WOW!! I must agree this has to be the toughest tournament of the year!

Here's what they said on The Mat:

There are seven teams which are represented in a recent national ranking on display there this weekend: No. 9 Bettendorf, IA; No. 18 Allen, TX; No. 26 Collins Hill, GA; No. 31 Blue Springs, MO; No. 32 Tuttle, OK; No. 33 Kearney, MO; and No. 45 Collinsville, OK. Others in this field of nearly 40 teams have long and successful wrestling traditions in their state and region.
