  1. If Greeneville Hits the Three's all night it will be hard for DB...I'm saying the Greene Devils in a nail bitter by 1 or 2...Hopefully they pull it out unlike last year...

If Greeneville hits their 3's then this one will at least not be a total blowout. I think DB wins by about 15 just cause this is at Greeneville. Gash and Shortt cannot overcome the huge height advantage DB has.

  2. Can you District 2 guys give us info on your teams?

In District 1 - Dobyns-Bennett has a huge height advantage, going 6-10,6-6,6-6, & 6-5 with their post players. Science Hill has very good Forwards and Guards. DB, Tn High and Sullivan East have outstanding guards, the Patriots can shoot the lights out of the 3's.

Does any team in District 2 have strong post players? Who are the best players on each Team playing tonight?

    Roll Tribe Roll

Here is what I know about the District 2 that Central played:

Greeneville - They have the best player in the Region in Tremaine Gash. I know that is a bold statement but he can play. If you are playing man 2 man against this guy do not try and put your quickest guy on him because Gash will be quicker and just abuse him. You are better off putting a tall guy on him and making Gash shoot over them (TN High will probably play a zone so that will not matter). Greeneville's other player is Shortt who is also one of the top players in the Region. He is pretty tall but is quick enough to take the guards off the dribble. Gash and Shortt are going to score no matter what, just don't let the other guys from Greeneville beat you.

Mo West - Their best player is Dustin Fanney. Quick and likes to penetrate but his favorite shot is a pull up jumper from the foul line. He is a very good player. The point guard for West is also a good 3 point shooter so watch out for him. The first time we played them they had a kid (more like a man though) who was about 6-6 and wore a head band, but he was not at Central when we played them last. Don't know if he got kicked off, quit or what but he is pretty tough if he plays.

Cocke County - Did not see this game so I can't comment too much about them. From what I am told this is the only District 2 team with any post play. Even though East has to play them away, they at least don't have to worry about the home cooking that many teams suffer from when going there since it will be Region 2 refs.

  3. But I think I have the answer if we should play you guys in Regionals. We are going to have to start the list for the Arbys officials early, and offer free upgrades and beverages for the flight to the Bahamas this year. /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

I knew that after 4 years on here I would rub off on you eventually.

  4. Which one is he? /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" />

I feel the same about you...there's not a bigger Cougar fan on these boards than you are. But I have to admit...I enjoy our exchanges (most of the time). They add a little spice to a sometime bland stew. I see Phil all the time but I intentionally ovoid asking him who you are because of fear of having to be nice to you if I know. /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

By the way...let me know if you're comin Saturday night, I have plenty of Viking gear you could wear to the game /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> . Just kidding...I had to get one for the road?

I am not going to say which one he is because he has intentionally lied on here a couple of times to try and conceal the fact that he is a ref. I will say this, he probably reffed the King/Walters State game last year if that gives you any hints.

Yeah I guess I am a pretty big Cougar fan but it is not because of some allegiance to the school. I have cheered for Central the last few years because of coaching some of these kids during summer camps/AAU teams, watching them play in middle school and of course because of my brother. I am also glad to see Coach Vaughn doing well. I've always wondered what my group would have done playing his style of ball. I'll always wish Central the best but I doubt it will be with the same enthusiasm I have had in the past few years.

I will probably just listen to the game Saturday on the radio. Believe it or not I actually have some Viking gear. I won 2 Mr Hustle shirts from Viking Camp when I was in middle school!

  5. You guys played a hard fought game??¦but this game was won (and lose) at the charity stripe. I have to be honest??¦I felt pretty comfortable at halftime, even WITH the inconsistency of the calls by the two refs other than Bart. One thing I think we all can agree on is that it??™s never a good sign when you see the official hanging out in the opposing teams student section during the game before your game. But even with that??¦It seemed like it would be our night from the jump. But I should have known from past experience that them county boys weren??™t going to just lay down and take it. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> From halftime on it was a nail biter!

Thanks for the well wishes but I??™m afraid it??™s going to take more than luck for the Vikings from this point on. But hey??¦anything could happen??¦I mean??¦we are the defending District Tournament Champions. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

    By the way #50 should play football??¦he??™s a beast! /ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> I don??™ remember him from the last game.

I know that we have had our words on here Cap1 but I have always liked the fact that you pull for your team and always feel like that they can beat anyone. You also really could have rubbed it in that you guys put us out, but you didn't and I appreciate that. Good luck to you guys from here on out.

Where is BROCK? I have read the last 3 pages and can't find him.

OK, for anyone who hasn't figured it out, OldDoc08 is a referee in the Big 9 conference. He once started a thread on here asking for people to rank the best officials in East TN...I mean are you kidding me? That would be like ranking who is the best scorekeeper or best clock operator. This is the kind of arrogance from officials that fans from the Big 9 have to put up with.

So are you asking where I have been so you can rub it in my face that Central got beat? You my friend are a class act. I guess now, since that I know who you are on here, you will have to go back to bashing me anonymously on the East TN Softball board right?

  6. Not trying to pick a fight??¦but do you think that perhaps a teams success or lack there of has a role in dictating how active a student section is. Could that be the real reason the Cougar student section has slightly dissipated? If ???the General??? is who I think she is??¦wasn??™t she also their in 04??™ and 05??™ went the Cougar student section looked like a sea of orange?

"The General" is the new principal at Central and she was definately not there in 04-05 or any other year but this one. "The General" nickname (I am guessing she made it up herself) comes from a shirt that she wears that says that on it. Pretty mature...huh? She has done her best to try and make the basketball games all about her instead of the players or the fans. She even went as far as to ask a fan to say her name in a cheer.

The crowds at Central have been great again this year except for the last 2 games, but again they were a non-conference game and a game againist Boone. I am sure there will be a lot of fans at the last home game Friday and when the Districts start. Central has a great group of kids and fans.

If you were the ones sitting under the goal, it was because one of you was cussing a Boone player. I will give it to you that the Central cheer section was funny, but that may have been because several were drunk. Drunks are always funny to watch.

Totally wrong. Nobody under the goal was drunk. "The General" decided she needed to yell down from above and tell one of Central's best former players that he had to throw his skoal out or he would be ejected from the gym (Like he was the only person in the gym dipping skoal). She also thought it was necessary to send 3 constables his way to make sure he did it (he spit it out in the thrash without a fuss by the way). All she had to do was tell the person herself to throw out the dip and nobody would have even known anything was going on. Anyway, after she makes this scene the guys father made a comment how ridiculous that was and she said that he needed to leave because he was "being smart" to her and then she sent the 3 constables his way.

As sad as I will be when this season is over and how I will miss seeing these players and the student section, I will be glad that I do not have to go to that gym anymore and see the "Clown Show" that Central has become this year and last. I honestly don't know why the students come to the games to only get treated terribly by their own administration and their own constables. Look at any other school, the administration and constables throw out fans from the OTHER TEAM, not their own! You are supposed to take care of your own fans, not threaten to make them leave just to show how much control you have.

  7. I don't see that article up yet. But, do you really think the refs were the reason for the loss? I mean TN High is one of those teams that can play your style you know? Central is the same way.

It is on tricities.com (Bristol Paper). It is not on TriCitiesSports.com yet.

bud, there is always a point in every game where a team hits a cold streak and struggles to score. Even in blowouts, there is always a small stretch where a team cannot either get in there offense or cannot make a bucket. We hit ours about 3 or 4 minutes into the 4th and I think we were up about 2 or 3 and Taylor Harmon hit a couple of big buckets to put them in the lead and they took the momentum from there.

Now, here is where the refs come into play. We are only up by 2 points at that time when, if the game is called anywhere close to fair, we are up 20 at this point and once they made that run we call a timeout, regroup and still have a sizable lead. This is how SH and DB put away teams, they get out to such a big lead that even when you make that late run on them you have used up everything you had just to get back in the game and make it close. This should have been a game where the JV players were getting time at the end. Every time we got a decent lead around 10 or so the refs would make unbelievable calls that would keep the ball on TN High's end until they scored.

  8. I will say this though. The players for TN High are very respectful to the other players and are good kids. I am sure that Coach Witcher has taught them this. Its not TN High's players fault, they played hard and did what they had to do to win.

It is just a shame that the kids put in a ton of practice in week after week and then get officiating like that. I do not remember the officiating being that bad when I played and their is even a lot of the same guys out there. Maybe they loved Coach Warren or something, I don't know.

The great thing about this game though is that it really didn't mean a lot as far as seeding in the district goes. It looks like we are playing TN High again in the 4-5 game.

  9. BOOHOOHOO...What a sore looser!!! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I was actually going to give Central credit for playing well until I heard all the violins playing! Just face it you guys gave it your best shot and still came up short. Central came in with a guns a blazin, especially #10...he couldn't miss in the first half! The Vikings were outplayed for three straight quarters and then did an apparent gut check in the fourth and dominated the Cougars like they should have done from the start!! Your recall of the foul situation is ludicrous and when the box scores come out everyone on here will see you for what you are.

Cougarnation #42 is Thomas Turnbull three year letterman FREE SAFTY (I called him hit-man). You should be careful what you say because you know you guys can't even spell FOOTBALL!! Before or after the game you will not find a more respectful young man. On the field of play I think he has more of a "don't start non won't be non" personality, and in his case that "attitude" you refereed to would be better labeled as intensity. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I personally thought this was one of the better called games of this season. You guys are just use to the officials keeping you in the game...but it didn't work out tonight like it did against the Hill. You wouldn't convince me or anyone else that has seen you play and SHHS play that you beat them straight up. I still cant figure that out. That's almost a "loose your job" type loss for Cutlip IMO. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

By the way IMO Central won't HAVE another good team unless Dickie Warren comes out of retirement and they give Gabe Buchanan, Phillip Weatherford, and Justin Hess another year of high school eligibility. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The foul shots were 22 - 5 and you will see it for sure in the box score tomorrow. The foul count was around 22-8 also. Like you said though, we will see.

You can put whatever you want to on here. Anyone who saw the game tonight knows how bad it was. And it was not just the fouls, it was the ludicrous calls that just come out of nowhere, like the lane violation where nobody was even close to going over the line.

Cap1, I am done with you on here. You consistently put statements that are untrue on here and try to pass them of. If you wanna talk ball, just ask Phil who I am and see me at the districts when we play you all again.

  10. DB over South (refs..we don't need no stinkin' refs!)

SH over Crockett (see not above)

Boone over Volunteer (Boone rushes for 200 and Volunteer has a late TD called back on a controversial holding call...stinkin refs! /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />)

TN High over Central (TN High's personal refs will work the game allowing the Vikes to pull this one out /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> )

You could not have called it any better. The first half of this game was the worst officiated game I have ever seen in high school basketball. No exaggeration, and the second half was the 2nd worst half I have seen. If this game was called anywhere near fair we win by 15 or more. TN High shot 22 foul shots to our 5. But that doesn't even begin to show the real story. Anytime we started to get any kind of lead by about 10 or more the refs would call either a lane violation on a free throw, moving screen, a phantom walk, 3 seconds or a foul not even near the ball to allow TN High to get back in the game. Then once we hit a 2 minute stretch where we struggled to score TN High hits a couple of shots and it was over for us. whereas if we had gotten a fair shake we would have weathered that because we would have been up 20 points. Once TN High got the lead all they had to do was throw it near the paint and the refs were going to call a foul on us.

The refs let TN High's post players just kill people inside on their zone and there is nothing you can do about but hope that somehow you can knock the people of your arms long enough (and without getting a crazy offensive foul called on you) to somehow muster the ball up to the goal. Funny thing was that TN High actually went to a man-to-man for about 3 possessions and we get 3 easy buckets because they didn't have any of their goons inside near the bucket to hammer us when we took it up. They quickly got away from that and went back to their usual going over the back and beating people under the goal. People want to go off on Volunteer for their physical play but really TN High in my opinion is worse than they are. Volunteer may be physical but they at leadt get called for those fouls, where as TN High does not.

But it has been like this for the last 10 years or so because of the Arby's. As long as TN High gets to appoint refs to this tournament then they are always going to get the benefit of the doubt, but tonight it was just put to the extreme. In my opinion TN High has not had a good team since Kevin Springs, John Sproles and Davey Wilson played. These TN High teams should be thankful everyday for the Arby's or they would be a consistent cellar dweller.

One of the refs we had tonight used to call in District 2 but for some reason is calling Big 9 games now. I mean what is the deal? Did we not have enough terrible refs that we had to go and get some from another District? Was this guy like last the final piece to the all-time worst officiating crew ever and we finally got all 3 of them teamed up together tonight?

  11. I just seen on TriCitiesSports today where Keith Cradic needs about 19 point to become Volunteer's all-time leading scorer.

The person he is going to pass is Chucky Lindholm, who played for Volunteer about 3 or 4 years ago when them and Central were still in AA. The thing is Chucky accumulated all those points in just 3 years, because his senior year he transferred to Twin Springs. He may have scored over 2500 points if he would have stayed there his senior year. I wish that Central, Volunteer and Elizabethton could have been in AAA during those years.

P.S. Does anyone else besides me remember when the Kingsport (now SW VA) Times-News gave previews about the upcoming games in the area and also had little weekly columns about some of the standout players from the previous week (I think it was in the "Sportsporri" section)? Now we are lucky to get an article about the game the next day. I know that the internet has probably hurt their business and they have had to have some cutbacks but it just doesn't make sense to me to have articles on NBA and NHL games instead of articles highlighting local athletics. If I wanted to read an article on the Suns/Spurs game I would pick up a copy of USA Today. The Times-News still has good writers (Bill Lane) but unfortunately that does not make up for the lack of coverage they have given the Tri-Cities teams.

Which brings me to my last rant about the Times-News. Does anyone know when they decided to change their coverage from the Tri-Cities area to the SW-VA area? Does someone in charge there have a girl who plays volleyball for Gate City or something? I remember last year on a Sunday where the front page of the sports was the all SW-VA girls Volleyball Team picture and article instead of articles about local high school basketball games the night before.

Has anyone else noticed these changes or is it just me?

  12. I did miss the game Sat... had to work, which is odd for a Saturday. The only thing I heard was, the Indians had one of those games where they just couldn't hit anything.. that happens, they won. Derrick Steele is the real deal and hands down the best Frosh in the conference.. not open for debate.

Gone to the Dome to watch the Indians play the Team with the best student section in the conference. I expect the team with the best coach and players win.

    Roll Tribe Roll

I doubt he is hands down better than any Freshman considering Jordan Cross is the sixth man on a pretty good East team. In fact, I think it is pretty much not open to debate that Cross has been the best Freshman in the conference this year.

Matt Harmon from Central is another good Freshman. He dresses Varsity and until he suffered a head injury that has sidelined him for the year, was a standout on the JV.

  13. LOL Nice try. I'll let Brock answer this one for you.

"A guy goes for a break away layup and gets murdered and it is a no call....."

    Brock,

Do you think was because D-B is coached and plays dirty? Or was this a case of the officials missing calls and not being very consistent on what they called? Did either team come out with intent on hurting someone or was it just a case of the officials letting things get out of hand?

I think thats the difference in Volunteer and the other 8 teams in the conference. INTENT.

No, there was no dirty play Friday night by either team and the game never got out of hand at any point. It was just a VERY inconsistently called game, for both teams. I shouldn't have used the word "murdered" because it was not like that. I was just referring to a couple of break away layups were the defender tried to go for the block and got the guy with body. Nothing dirty.

  14. If I ever find a pair of those big floppy red shoes, I just might try it.

Win or loose the Refs in East TN. are absolutley terrible. Maybe they could have some kind of training for them, maybe that would help.

I said after the game was over that I thought that was the worst officiated game all year. The inconsistency is what was so bad. A guy goes for a break away layup and gets murdered and it is a no call, but if someone tries to pock the ball out from someone on the perimeter it is a foul.

  15. Good game to DB, Central hung on till the 3rd, but I give credit to DB's amazing bench. They played every player and its extremely hard to play a team where the kids are never tired. Im not going to blame anybody like most people do, DB flat out, outplayed us. Best of luck in the tourny. Up next, Sullivan East at their place, should be an AWESOME game. I am thinking it will be a close one, with the win coming in the closing minutes to either team, ( but of course I would like Central to be the winning team.)

Yeah I thought it was a pretty good game too, gym seemed to be packed. While it would have been awesome to win this game, realistically the rest of the games is what Central needs to win to at least have a shot at getting third place if East stumbles some along the way. The best thing I guess Central can take out of this game it was a pretty close and Central didn't really play their best game.

  16. That?€™s cool. Bill obviously has done a better job with his explanation because he's practically back in ?€œThe House?€?...literally. But George...well George is OUT (finally)!!!!!!!!!!!!! But no fear...the Saudi Prince says GB will always have a place to stay if he can help it!

Probably not a joust you want to get into (with me anyway)...the GB bloopers and blunders are never-ending. Have you heard of the term OG (original gangster)? GB is the OC of the US (original CLOWN)! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

I think everybody already assumed that you were a liberal with all your ridiculous posts. Ignorance and liberalism pretty much go hand and hand.

  17. I agree totally...different Central team from last time out (although they did just lose by 13 to Morristown West who lost to both Crockett and Boone recently!...curious /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" ). DB is the better team by far and should win but if they don't come out with more fire in there belly than Tuesday then there in for a real fight. Central can flat shoot when they are on and getting the open shots. Oh just for the record...cause there are some out there that don't think so...if Central wins it WILL be an upset. Plain and simple. But like I said, anything can happen on a given night in the Big 9. I'm assuming Central will come out in a zone as they did against Science Hill?

We were up by about 12 points in the first half against Mo West. Then they got hot and went up on us by about 17 in the second half until we made a late run made it close late. Central played a lot of people this game. I am assuming it was because it was a non-conference game. Roberts only played about a quarter too because he was sick.

I bet Central has had a least 5 games this year that they have lost where they were up big late in the first half only to lose.

Central did play a couple of different zones against SH but who knows what they will come out with Friday night. Hopefully DB will not be as hot as they were the first time Central played them. It would also be nice to see the kind of crowd that was at the DB/Central game last year when it was at the Den.

  18. If we were all on hear patting each other on the back I wouldn??™t bother and neither would you or 90% of the posters on here (I??™ll give you your 10%)??¦and this site would fail overnight! You sound like one of those people that get upset at the games because people are actually yelling at a ballgame. You obviously spent allot of time on your post and I respect that, but in doing so you are merely doing what people do on any message boards and that is exercise your first amendment right to express your opinion. So if some of these conversations get a little ???ugly??? for your taste you can exercise another right you have and LOG OFF! This is IMO intended to be informative and entertaining and I should think that any opinion posted on here is perceived as just that??¦an opinion??¦.nothing more nothing less. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Exactly! Whether we will admit it or not we all like to see the drama that goes on this board.

  19. It does seem odd that SH only took 6 free throws compared to SC taking 19 AT the Dickie Dome. I'm sure some of those came late with SH being behind. that was one thing that stuck out to me reading the boxscore...but I wasn't there. I noticed Odem didn't crack the scoreboard. Did he not play or did the SC defense shut him down?

Exactly, so if you were not there then why does it seem odd that Central shot more free throws than SH? TN High shot a lot more free throws than South last night, does that also seem odd to you? DB always seems to shoot more free throws than the team they are playing is that odd as well?

  20. And WHY does everyone hate science hill so much, is it because JC is a nicer place to live then every where else or because SH is the biggest school in the region or because we have more state championships than anyone, i dont know what it is but sh and db are the two best teams and has been for a while but everyone hates sh a whole lot more than db. Tell me why

Umm, here is a thought. Don't bash the refs on CoachT after you get beat. I mean, that is rule #1 on CoachT. There is no better way to get ganged up on by every team than to bash the refs.

So lemme ask you this, did those refs miss all those fast break layups that SH had? Did the refs jump up to the rim and make all those 3's that Kaiko, Rock and Roberts go in? Did they tell Mickey to shoot that fade away jumper that iced the game? You get my point...

You are lucky that the refs did not call a technical on the SH bench for taking water on the floor during a timeout that caused Albright to have to come out of the game when he slipped on it.

Just from reading the posts from both sides its easy to come to the conclusion that Science Hill got raped by the refs. But even at that they should have been able to beat Central. But I will eat the "Crow" on this one. It appears that even the "Central Circus" has its day in the sun. I still honestly don't think Central has the team to make it out of Districts (unless they bring their refs with them to every game /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> ), but I have to agree with your last statement whole heartedly. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

You just can't fully give these Central boys their due can you?

  21. A new low tonight, from the lowest of all in the Big 9, Volunteer. They play just like their coached! I don't want to hear one word of excuses from that Hawkins County bunch either. No class!!

I hope it all falls right and DB gets to end your season in the District.

So what happened? I heard something about a guy from Volunteer not only getting ejected but getting thrown out of the gym.

  22. That argument is TIRED. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> Here??¦chew on this for awhile.

THS over South - Shouldn??™t be a big deal but who knows.

The Hill over Central - In a word...Massacre!

DB over Volunteer - Hope nobody gets hurt.

East over Boone - Takin candy from a baby.

Cap1, in a word - Hilarious! Someone should start a poll on CoachT about what poster has had the most "Foot-In-Mouth" moments. But would anyone really be close to Cap1?

What a great win for Central. This team is getting better every night out and this was one of those wins that will hopefully carry on and give them confidence for the rest of the year.

  23. THS can be a "wanna be" if they chose to be because they know that they are as good as those teams. i.e. last year /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> . I would take being a wanna be anyday over being central who is a "never will be" . When Central can win districts then we might throw you in the same catagory as THS, SHHS, and DB. but probably not. have a great day

So how many districts/regionals has TN High won? Not being smart, I would just like to know. How many did they win during the 70's or 80's? Probably not many since Central and DB dominated during those times. How about the 90's? I doubt very many then too since SH dominated then. So do you have any facts/stats/info that you can give that would justify TN High being mentioned in the same category with DB or SH without also putting Central in there as well?

I don't really know how many districts Central or TN High has but I doubt that either one has that many more than the other. Basketball in this area has been dominated by DB and for awhile SH when Pitts was there but now they seem to be a consistent 2nd. And even during those days DB had just as much talent, they just didn't have George Pitts on the sideline.

Now if you are talking about football then that is a different story. TN High has a good football program and has had some great teams.
