  1. I heard Pro/Tool has put up a bundle like the " booster club " did for SCHS! I even heard some pretty big fish are now swimming around on our end of the pond! You go Pro Tool........ /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Way to be mature about it, don't you think your behavior maybe a detriment to the Seymour program. I get it Bobby left and you are upset about it, is there a need to take it to such a personal level? Have you not change jobs before? I am certain you have and your bashing of him is unwarranted. I know Bobby since he was in high school, and my friend a tool Bobby is not.

  2. MVM, good topic. I just see a bunch of players with a sense of entitlement. Beasly has no business being on the pitch, our central midfielder loses the ball to often, Altidore is too predictable. In essence our game is predictable but US sosccer has made some progress, I still think they need to fire Bradley and try to hire Guus Hiddink, he seems to work miracles where he goes.

  3. When I coached high school girls in Florida, there was a 10 goal "mercy rule" that if there was a 10 goal differencial with one half played, the game was called... period. It was a thing of contention down there, many argued for and against, but it had a place for sure. I believe it was Satellite Beach High school went an entire regular season without playing a second half of a game (of which my team was one of those unfortunate ones whose goal was to last MORE than one half but failed!). Is there a place for this here in TN? Again, I don't think so if one has a game plan.

To say that "It is my job to score and your job to stop us" seems naive in the extreme when comparing the talent that some teams have at their disposal compared to the lack thereof on some of the other squads. There are extreme district mismatches (I think more-so in the girls season than in the guys I must say) where the talent level is very disproportionate. There is no way that some of these teams COULD stop them... this is why I believe a team must "stop itself" in a manner of speaking.

The things that one should look for before they blast a team is to determine if those high scores are exceptions or the mean, are the starters in and still scoring after 3 or 4 or 5, and most importantly, in my opinion, is the attitude of the girls during the whole match. I forget who said it in this thread, but I have seen "close" games that were EXTREMELY ugly and lacking in class, and I have seen 8-0 matches where the girls from both teams are shaking hands and joking after the match.

A merit based system takes care of all of this. Moves the best teams up, and the teams that are struggling down. No more major mismatches in district play. The best play the best no matter the size of the school (yes, EastTNref, I am saying this, and have said this for some time). But it isn't going to happen, I don't believe. Too much juggling, too much work for someone to determine who goes where.

This will forever be debated and I don't think ever solved. But I do think it is good to debate and see all the sides. I must say that so far, this is one of the BEST discussions we have had on the topic without it getting closed. (I hope I just haven't jinxed us!)

you know you were not in my home state, I used to volunteer coach at Port St Lucie High, the mercy rule was good thing

    (I'm just impressed you spelled "dissertation right!") /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Hey, I think I read about you in the paper last week (correct me if I am wrong). Looks like you have things going pretty well so far! Good luck with the rest of your season. You just doing the girls teams again, or are you going to get back into the guys?

I googled it, the girls are coming around, we are just very injured right now, the younger players are stepping up which is always good to see. I would like it better if we were healthy, I still feel like I do not know to much about this group just yet, but they seem to enjoy to prove me wrong with challenge. My schedule will not allow me to do the boys, having a 21month old at home changes everything. I sorta enjoy being married.

  5. Thank you Canes.

This is always a hot topic (usually after a high score like the one mentioned).

It CAN be done. In the past 6 years at CAK, I have had ONE double digit score against an opponent. We were playing with 8 field players at the time. We have a plan that we put in place, that has phases. Phase 1-4 (shown with a simple showing of numbers on a hand to our captain, who spreads the word.) Different limitations in different situations. It has worked for me in over 100 games (save the one mentioned above). But this is MY coaching philosophy. This doesn't mean that other coaching philosophies are wrong. I might dissagree with them, but many times the score ISN'T always the whole story of the game. I have seen high scoring games that both teams come off the field amicably. I have also seen the other nasty side, where opponents or coaches won't even shake hands, and it gets ugly.

I remember early in coaching, one of my "phases" included NO shooting on goal... just keep away. It was a NIGHTMARE! It REALLY made the other team feel pretty bad, because we were one and two touching it back and forth, and it came across as being insulting. We very quickly changed the phase, and have never gone back to it since.

I know the argument that "you can't tell the freshman who never gets in not to do his best". Actually, you are right! I want him to do his best. Best passing, best running off the ball, best defense, best tactical positioning, etc. There is SO much more that I need that freshman to do than score. Scoring is the easy part against a less talented opponent. Show me the one on one skills, show me a run OFF the ball. "Well, isn's limiting a young players scoring opportunitis unfair to that player?" This is why you put them in EARLY when you notice that the other team hasn't made it to your side in the first 15 minutes. Keep your starting defense in, but put the freshmen or subs up top when the score is 3-0 (don't wait until 6 or 8!). Set limitations even then. It shows discipline DURING the flow of the game. It shows that they can control their thought process even though they REALLY want to score. Getting hungry for goal is a good thing!

Almost every year we have every single person on our roster get a goal (even keepers!). AND that is without scoring in the double digits.

Again, please let me stress, I am not trying to say "THIS IS THE WAY YOU SHOULD DO THINGS!"!!! This is just the way I have chosen to run my club. It doesn't mean that it is the perfect way (by ANY means) or even the right way (because I do understand the opposing view to my choice, and understand a lot of their choices). It seems to have served me well, and so I will continue to attemp to use it until I see a need to change.

Caveat: I must admit in my coaching outside the varsity boys, this method has had times where it hasn't worked, even with EXTRA "phases" added in. In middle school, when the higher league teams had scrimmages against the lower level league teams in the beginning of the season, the mismatch of talent was too great. No matter what phase we tried, or where we shot from, or what we limited ourselves too, the ball when in the net (sometimes by the other team). I have learned those games are going to happen. My over all opinion, is as long as it is the EXCEPTION and not the rule, then that is ok. But IN MY OPINION, if your scores are consistantly in the double digits, you need to do one of two things. Start getting a plan in place to limit your opportunities BEFORE they get out of hand, or you need to boost the difficulty of your schedule. Some games you don't have a choice in, I know. But others you do.

PHEW... I'm tired. Must be getting old. I knees hurt from climbing down off this soap box.

    Stop writing your dissertation

  6. Speaking of Karns, apparently they now have a dedicated soccer pitch after years of playing on the football field. Congratulations Karns players, coaches, parents, administrators, and supporters assuming this is true. Anyone have the scoop on how this was accomplished?

I guess news travel fast, we will play our first home game on the field tomorrow weather permitting, its dimension is 115X75, the parents and the players worked on the field all summer long, we still have some challenges, but for the first year we are extremely greatful and proud of the new field.

  7. Coming from the guy that has been Hyping Powell, I do not see anyone from Karns asking to be hyped as a matter their coach have asked the players and parents not post anything on here..

    Hey B,

I see you still have your old coach's back, I am thankful for the loyalty. I do not think you need to get defend the Karns program we have a way to go, I will be the first one to say our play is not as consistent as I would like. Do I need to include former players to not posting on here as well... /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

  8. Now, EatTNref... don't drag me into this one!

I see things from both sides. Keeperfan said it well when he said that no program has parents who agree 100% with the coach's decisions. I don't care how many championships you have won, or licenses you have, when sports are involved with the addition of someone's children, parents are going to dissagree at some time with the coach. And that is ok. There isn't a coach alive that makes no mistakes... I do all the time! BUT, you need to have good communication between the parents, players and coaches, and parents and players need to give the coach the benefit of the doubt to prove himself. Coaches need to be careful on not coming across as a "know it all" or "my way or the highway" person. Even though the coach most likely does know what he is doing, and the coaches decisions are final, as the old saying goes, "honey works so much better than vinegar" in most parent/coach relationships.

As a coach, the MOST valuable lesson I learned was to admit when I was wrong or made a mistake. And admit that out loud to my players if necessary. That doesn't degrade your position... in fact, I think it can strengthen it if done the right way.

But to flip flop back in EastTNref's court, I think in order to be truly successful, having everyone buy into what you are doing will build a STRONG program. But in order to do this, it takes a LOT of work off the field, and on the phone or e mails or with the players after practice. If they know that you truly care more about the lives of the players than the winning losing percentages, than parents will jump on board.

    Tom,

    I agree with you 100%

  9. seems like the "Coach T Season" has just begun with that post /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Glad to see everyone is getting their spirits up and their "&*( in a wad.....LET'S GO!!!!!

I do not mind a good debate, but make a prediction that is so far off the wall is reckless. here is mine

Powell will win the State championships

  10. seems like the "Coach T Season" has just begun with that post /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Glad to see everyone is getting their spirits up and their "&*( in a wad.....LET'S GO!!!!!

    lol

  11. and what happened the year before that so it should be a good one this year

Don't forget you all are a AAA and we are AAA and we are still 1-1 the past two years and we won our district the past two years

    and you all?

That is because the prediction is just that off the wall, unjustified, etc...

    thank you easttnref

  12. It was a generalization, referring to teams like Bearden, Farragut, Oak Ridge and West year in and year out. They are the better teams year in and year out and I don't think they shy away from competition just because they have a Bulls Eye on them every year. You have issues, taking things to personal. It was not a State Ranking or anything, it was just one individual making a meaningless prediction. Until the season is over, which oh that's right it hasn't even started yet, who knows if I am right or wrong.

Dude, I am taking anything personal. I just find your prediction of the wall that is it.

  13. Is all good, I would say having a Bulls Eye is what the better teams are used to, everyone that plays and cares wants to beat the best teams.

You claimed they are better than everyone in their district and that is not a bulls eye. There are several teams in that district that will have something to say about that.

  14. Well I guess you are hoping the High School team is better than the Competitive Team was this Spring, which comprised alot of the Players who attend Oak Ridge. If you have alot of players on the High School Team that play for a Competitive Team other than the Krossfire, then you may finish better than 4th! We will see, but hey we did accomplish setting off post 4th of July Fireworks!

my friend no fireworks, rankings do not count that is why they played the games. You just painted a bulls eye on Powell this year.

  15. Wow! What have you got against Oak Ridge? Although I think they will struggle some offensively, I would still pick them to win the district, but I don't see them getting any further than that.

I agree with your bottom three, but I think I would flip the top four.

last year when they played, the rankings were

    Oak Ridge

    West

    Karns

    Powell

    Central

    Halls

    Clinton

I the top two reamin the same and the rest can fight for whatever rankings they want.

  16. is that the girls bowling team ranking? /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Here is a pick to get people excited or up in arms, lol:

Class AAA Region 2 District 3

    1. Powell

    2. Karns

    3. West

    4. Oak Ridge

    5. Halls

    6. Central

    7. Clinton

    Let's see how many interesting comments we get from this /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

  17. Tom,

They are in the same district with Oak Ridge, West, Karns, Central, Powell, Clinton, and Halls

I know it might seem like semantics, but are they Hardin Valley High School, or Hardin Valley Academy? (I honestly don't know, so I was curious. HVA makes it sound like a private school).

I think it will be sooner than 5 years, but I was being conservative. I would also like to know what district they are put in. Also, will they have an actual "varsity" team next year?

  18. Never played soccer in high school, and yet he presumes to rank high school soccer teams on a weekly basis? Interesting....

    and what are your qualifications?

get off your high horse, MJ just try to let even knows what is going round the state. We do not need that type of comment here.
