Whether or not he deserved it then really isn’t the topic. And tbh, nobody dogged Calvin for getting it like you are dogging Pete right here. We’re saying THIS YEAR there was no competition as to which coach should’ve gotten the award. There was a case to be made for multiple kids getting it, Calvin just shouldn’t have been one of them.

It’s just a little weird that one of the awards went where it should and the other didn’t.

Here is the honest truth as to why Calvin won it. Although he only wrestled a couple of matches, not his fault, when his name popped up. I guarantee you all of the Metro coaches voted for him.  That left the Williamson County teams to split their votes amongst the more deserving wrestlers from this season. I wasn’t in the room, but when I was coaching, there was a division amongst the 2 districts. 2016 COY in the region went to Chris Murray of Hillsboro. Yes he did a great job. But in my opinion the award should have gone to Jared Grindstaff, Phillip Pelkey, or Jerome Dooley. Why didn’t Jared or Pelkey win it. Votes were split, all the Metro coaches voted for Murray, because I wasn’t going to vote for myself. There you have it. It’s not about popularity, it’s just that the Metro coaches feel that Willco teams think they are better and will not vote for them if it is going to be determined by majority. Metro has an advantage, all they need is one Willco coach or Dickson Co to roll with them. It will never be a fair vote until regions are changed. Which I think is happening next year. Didn’t you all ever wonder why some of those coaches never wanted to wrestle you guys, or you didn’t see them until regions. That’s pretty much why. I didn’t really look at wrestling this season until duals, but I saw that there were a lot of kids that had outstanding seasons. There should not have been a Metro kid up for any award this season. Although through no fault of their own,  the body of work was not comparable to those that had full seasons.

    District 14 results

    Round 1:

    Independence 44 over #12 Brentwood 28

    #11 Centennial 63 over Page 12

    District FInals:

Centennial 40 Independence 39 (Centennial forfeited the last 4 weight Classes)

Now I've gotten in trouble in the past speculating but I'll go ahead and risk it again here. I don't know who moves on from District 13 but based off Results from Track I am just making an educated guess. The matchups for the Region 7 Championships should look like this

    Round 1:

    Centennial vs Antioch

    Independence vs Overton

with the two winners making the trip to the cow palace next weekend.

Pelky has done an outstanding job with his group of kids and has them ready to make some serious noise and if I know one thing about Jared Grindstaff its that no matter what happens early in the season he always has his squad ready come late January and into February. Both teams are top notch this year and could make deep runs at state. But both have to get through the District 13 champs and runners up before they can punch their tickets.

I haven't been around, but keep up. The top 2 from Metro district are Overton and McGavock. The scores weren't posted but McGavock beat Antioch.

Are they not doing top 3 teams from each district anymore? Why did that get voted out?

Congrats to Pelkey, he has been doing a great job at Centennial. Not being any type of way,  but neither of the Metro schools will have a shot. Giving up forfeits is #1 downfall, then Indy and Centennial are far better. Good luck to everyone

If the fire your coach, who are they going to get to work over there nununu? How many coaches have yall had the last 6-7 years anyway? Nobody wants  to go to LA now.

I totally agree with your statement. I personally don’t know the coach, haven’t been at the school in 2 yrs now. I get info from players and staff. I didn’t want to say this before, and someone mentioned it. But Mike Woodward ran a tight ship, and this would have never happened under his watch. There are a number of assistant coaches in Metro, that I think would do well in the position, there is still hope, although it will take a few years to get a culture of winning. They have won 5 games in the last 6 years, it’s going to take some work, and allowing someone to establish themselves

  4. This really sucks for the Overton kids.  If I'm not mistaken,  these two teams had a fight last year that ended the game in the 4th qtr.  My question is how long will the head coach last. Because regardless of saying the kids did it. Behavior, and controlling behavior starts at the top

If I'm not mistaken Brown was a junior when Coker was a senior. I think in Browns senior year Antioch was knocked out of the playoffs in first round in a high scoring game to Ravenwood. Ravenwood went on to play Smyrna in the championship game. My memory is foggy so I could be wrong.

Actually lost to Franklin 2 years in a row, after a disappointing lost to Centennial as the 1 seed the year before. First Franklin game was Coker's Sr year. Lost a hard fought game 10-7 in the last minute. Next season, gave up 21 1st half points and lost 24-14. Franklin did make championship game that first year we met.

Yea that really sucks and it don't look like gets going to get better.

Just to add to this, the kids essentially quit. From a good source, the seniors didn't show up for practice much of the last week. Then on Friday, they complained about the weather, and stopped playing. The coach basically said let's forfeit.  Beautiful ending to your last high school football game

Antioch - Overton game ended with 10 minutes to go in 4th quarter. Antioch walked off the field and said they did not want to finish.

Heard there was a fight before they left. I hate what this senior class endured. 4 coaches in 4 years. 4 wins in 4 years.

  8. As for the "protest" most of those kids never went to a game and could care less. They were just being dramatic for the TV cameras. The kid talking on camera actually quit football. He had another agenda...

    .

I am replying to this because this is my son you are talking about. My son had an agenda in what was done. I was not a part of it. In actuality, the students that actually organized the walkout asked him to speak for them. Why him? Well I guess you can see why. His agenda was with DECA. He has been to the national convention the past 2 years. This year, they were told by the principal they could not go to the State convention to even qualify for nationals . Several reasons were given as to why not, but nothing was done to try and help them make it, was he upset about that, yes. Did he let the administration know about his frustrations and possible solutions, yes. Was there anything done, No. On the football issue. He did not quit the team. He did not attend the last regular season game, because he was attending an overnight event for EARLY ADMISSION students at UT. Let me say that again.EARLY ADMISSION(other kids are just getting acceptance letters) After that, he did not make the trip to Memphis. Did I get on him about that, yes. Didn't particularly condone that. But his equipment was gone when he got back. So that was that. The kids at Antioch decided they wanted to stand up for their school. Just so happens that my son, having the voice box he does, stepped up and made himself the face of this. I am proud that he conducted himself in a very professional manner, and also made sure that the other students did as well. I talked to him today, and there are some changes going on. Dr. Joseph was at the school today. He even said that the burgers were grilled to a medium well. LOL!!! I believe the administration heard the kids, I'm sorry Coach Woodward was not retained. I have all the respect in the world for what he has and is doing. I would like if me and mines and my situation be left out of this thread. Has nothing to do with this. Thank you
