  1. Alliance may also still have boys' teams. In the past they fielded a 14U and an 18U team. They have had boys teams for at least 5 years but have to travel quite far to play.

Don't think you'll be seeing boys volleyball as a sanctioned HS sport anytime in the near future.

  2. I've been out of circulation for a while but I am hearing that the power in 9AAA is shifting. Mt. Juliet was strong last year, Wilson Central was booted out of the district tournament in the first round. There are a number of players at Beech, Station Camp, and Lebanon playing club ball. I also understand that the coach at Lebanon is really whipping those girls into shape with some serious conditioning.

I'm ready for some volleyball. how about you? Let's get this party started!

There are more schools in TN recruiting locally -- now more than ever. I didnt even get to Maryville, Kings College, Christian Brothers, Rhodes, Belmont, Lipcomb, Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Suwanee and so many players I can't even name them all.

I believe that if you want to play in college you can. The schools mentioned above are Dl, Dll, NAIA. Didn't even start to look up Dlll. There may not be athletic scholarship money involved but between academic scholarships, the HOPE scholarship and private scholarships, just about any girl that wants to play can.

  4. Coming out of the bushes atcha. These are some good points but as far as Schools not having the right to play whoever they want, is like schools not having some autonamy on getting Tournament slots filled or having the responsibility to help make their student/Athletes better. Thats the responsibility and the mission of the schools. That was one argument the private schools made when they wanted to be in another Division. That is the argument the Coach at Ravenwood has been making in the newspaper as to why Williamson Volleyball is so good. If you would look, many of those same schools play each other the same ammount of time as the 'Woods" play. As you have stated and I can understand, it did not allow Wilson to get to the STATE. Pretty frustrating I can be sure.

Ok, I'm not coming 'out of the bushes'. As I've stated in other posts, I visit the forum every day, something a moderator is supposed to do. I don't post often for two reasons, one, I think that the forums should be self-sustaining through topics such as this one started by and continued by the members. If a topic is not of interest, no one contributes, and it dies. And secondly, I no longer have daughters playing HS volleyball so I have no dog in the fight. I catch HS matches when I can either through tournament or one of the HS close to my home (WC, MJ, Lebanon, Friendship, etc) but I can no longer speak with any authority on any of the programs I used to know so well in my past.

As far as (Wilson) Central getting to state, they didn't even get out of their district but that's no concern of mine. Like I said, we've moved on :) I am simply pointing out that when my daughter and I totaled up college matches she plays, they never play conference opponents in tournament play. They only play them when it counts. The *most* a team might meet a conference foe is 4. Twice during conference play, once in the conference tournament, and once again if both teams make the NCAA regional. Since only one team moves on from the regional, they couldn't meet after that.

  5. Man, I am LOVING this conversation :) its nice to see I'm not the lone ranger on this one. Why should the state tournament be any different than the NCAA? One and done. We play a region of 8 and then on to the elite 8. Every match is all or nothing. Bring your A game or go home.

And off topic but the fact that Brentwood and Ravenwood played each other 8 times in one season is insane. This should NOT happen. The should play in district and then post season. The should not match up during tournaments...ever. I can't believe the TSSAA allows this to happen. But again, this is just one woman's opinion...carry on :)

  7. Why didn't we make it to state...let me count the ways...actually it's just counting one way...Region 5 plays through Region 6 which includes Brentwood, Ravenwood, Independence. We made it to the Sweet 16, 3 years in a row, and every year had to play through Independence to get to State. Well, the rest is history. We were a program where few girls played club at a high level or at all so many girls never touched a ball from November through July. Independence was the opposite. I don't underestimate the value of club -- you wouldn't practice the piano for a couple of months before a competition and then not touch the instrument for 9 months and expect to be successful. This has nothing to do with our HS coach other than to say some schools flat out tell their players they must play club if they hope to make the team. Our coach did not have either the mind set or the support of our administration to do that.

Yes, my daughters both played club. My oldest from 1999-2004 and my youngest from 2005-2010. Eleven years total. All at Impact/Alliance. My oldest was recruited at DIII and chose to coach instead. My youngest is currently a junior at a DII school in TN playing as a DS. Was club important. Absolutely. Our college team has 5 freshmen this year. 2 of them are starters. Those two played at a high level, at the same club (and in the spirit of full disclosure, I'm biased as I was a strong advocate for their recruitment but honestly I predict one of them will be the SAC Freshman of the Year), for the same coach. Both were court-ready when they got to school. The other 3 have GREAT potential (and killer swings). They also played for clubs -- 2 from other states, but were not ready for the speed of the college game and see very limited court time. I expect that one will step into a starting position next year with the other two seeing more court time but not really contributing until their junior year.

I have said this before, college coaches have limited or NO time to recruit as the HS and college seasons are at the same time. We have a lot of recruits on campus this time of year but it's due to the recruiting we do in the off season, aka club.

This has nothing at all to do with HS coaches or whether or not they want to win. This has to do with player development and the HS season is so short and so intense that coaches barely have time to play all required matches and tournaments much less do intense technique and skill training. That's what club is for.

**Now I will step off my soap box and let you all get back to your regularly scheduled topic** icon_rolleyes.gif

  8. I think there has to be a balance. My daughters NEVER played for a coach that didn't want to win but sometimes, depending on the opponent, the coach was realistic that playing a particular opponent wasn't going to have a winning outcome but viewed the game more as 'experience' -- the opportunity to raise your game and make a good showing. Playing hard, playing well isn't always going to have a winning outcome and sometimes the 'good and hard' has to be the reward :)

Hight school volleyball, for most players, IS about making memories. Most of the players won't go on to play after HS and those that aspire to that play club. That's not to say that players are never recruited out of HS, our HS in particular is heavily recruited by a local NAIA university and the girls who go on to play there almost never play club.

Coaches know this and good coaches, I believe, try to strike a balance between winning and fun. Only 8 teams in the entire state go to the championships. Our coach was never satisfied with making it to Sweet 16 but was happy that the girls have that memory.

Am I making sense this morning, or do I need more coffee?

  9. 9 AAA Standings

    Mt. Juliet 8-0

    Wilson Central 6-3

    Beech 6-3

    Portland 5-3

    Lebanon 5-4

    Hendersonville 3-6

    Station Camp 2-7

    Gallatin 0-9

There seems to have been a huge power shift in 9AAA this year. WC and Portland both have new coaches. Beech having long been at the bottom of the district (just a few years ago went 0-11) is now in the top 3 tied for 2nd with WC.

I haven't been able to get to any games this year due to work and family commitments but hope to be on hand for the district tournament being held at the new (and beautiful) Lebanon HS.

Wilson Central is playing at the Fr Ryan Tournament 9/21-22.

Station Camp is hosting the Bison Bash 9/21-22

Mt Juliet is participating in the siegel Tournament 9/28-29.

Beech will play at the Sonic Blast Invitational 9/28-29

Both WC and Hendersonville will be participating in the Mid-Tenn Classic 10/2-3.

Lebanon and Gallatin have no tournaments posted on their calendar

    Portland has no information posted.

  10. As far as I know, the 50% rule only applies to basketball, softball and baseball. Somehow the TSSAA has overlooked club volleyball and soccer at this point in time.

The thought (at least as far as volleyball is concerned) is that in rural areas a rule like that would limit the ability to participate since there are relatively few clubs. Some clubs are made up totally of HS teams -- girls would have to travel upwards to 2 hours to find a club in a major metro area.

If a 50% rule were to be instituted, it would only apply to 15 and up as the TSSAA only has jurisdiction over High School sports.

HS coaches are prohibited from coaching their own players in the off season. Many HS coaches can be seen coaching girls that are 14 and under as they are not yet HS freshmen -- that is allowed. I don't know about giving lessons but I would suspect that is also considered 'coaching'.

  11. I think that that the difference is this:

Girls soccer is a TSSAA sanctioned sport, so if a girls team doesn't exist then a girl can play with the boys. Mens volleyball is not a TSSAA sanctioned sport so therefore boys are not allow to participate with the girls.

There was a incident in NY state a few years ago regarding a state championship team that had a boy. In NY, boys volleyball is sanctioned and so he was allowed to play. Some issues with this though include the fact that boys are generally taller/stronger than girls and in boys volleyball the net is higher so allowing boys to play with girls may constitute an unfair advantage.

Either way, unless the TSSAA institutes boys volleyball as a sanctioned sport, it will remain club or intramural only.
