  1. Dear BusterJr., I just wanted to remind you of a gentlemen's agreement that you and I had a few weeks ago concerning predicting who will be in the boys Class A State Tournament. Do you remember? An official copy of our contract is on Coach Rodjo's desk. Anyways, I want my Bourbon Street Steak at Applebee's well done with steamed vegetables and a bake potato on the side with sweet tea and lemon to drink. While you are at it, go ahead and order us a Maple Blondy Brownie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. I will be there on Friday at 3:00 pm at the Applebees in Murfreesboro. And Buster, don't ever question the knowlegde of your old Coach again. After all, I was the protege of the Original Lewis County Legend Howard "the Bear" Spears. Here are my predictions for the boys state tournament: Class A-Temple, Class AA-Giles Co., Class AAA-Hamilton. Buster, who do you pick?
  2. The Legend's Biographies would not be adequate without the addition of the Human Highlight himself Evan "Fly Williams" Lawson. Evan grew up on the crime infested street of Woodmere Drive. Woodmere is known for its homeless, drug addicts, prostitution, and street gangs. The gang that controls most of the crime is the Mexican Mafia led by notorious Kingpin Roberto(Bobby) Sharpe'. Growing up Evan was beaten and abused many times by the Mafia thugs. To escape the abuse, Evan would ride his bike to Memorial Park to practice his skills. Through the years, Evan became a tremendous ball-handler, shooter, defender, and noted for his amazing ability to drive the lane and make gravity defying shots amongst some of the parks tallest players like the Gooch, Lee Burklow, Shane Kimbel, Mark Keeton, and Donnie Ellison. In middle school, Evan led the Raiders to back-to-back winning seasons under the direction of the legendary coach "The Old Cowboy" Wayne Tatum. Evan moved up to highschool to play for the Legendary Albert Ellison. During Evan's senior season the Panthers won an amazing 8 games, a record for the late 80's and early 90's Panther squads. After graduation, Evan accepted a scholarship to play for the Governors at Ft. Campbell Community College. Evan was a starter his freshman and sophomore seasons. However, future NBA player Bubba Wells came along and stole the spotlight the next two seasons and Evan was forced to play mop-up duty. Upon graduating from APSU, Evan decided to follow in the footsteps of his uncle Jack and become a coach. Jack "the Ripper" Lawson is the all-time leader in winning percentage among active highschool coaches in Maury County. During this time Evan also fell in love with Abbey Morton and decided to marry into another of Lewis County's famous basketball families. The Morton's have produced such great basketball talents as Kenny, Tobey, Tabitha, and Justin. Evan has also played a major role in helping to rebuild the Lady Panthers into one of Middle Tennessee's Premier Teams. Evan said he would like to see the Lady Panthers play again someday at the same level they did in the mid-1980's when the Bear Spears took them to the sub-state where they lost to eventual state champ Brentwood. In his free time Evan enjoys playing basketball with his Legends teammates where he is affectionately referred to as "The Fly" after another APSU legend Fly Williams. For your contributions to Lewis County Basketball Evan "Fly" Lawson we say THANK YOU!
  3. This past Sunday morning at 8:00am, Lewis County's favorite son Joshua "Buster" Keltner departed from his hime in Western Lewis Co. to begin his journey as a professional boxer. It was a sight to see as fans lined the streets waving flags to show their support for their hometown hero. The Tennessee Army National Guard provided Buster with an escort all the way to Nashville. Reports from the Nashville School of Professional Boxing have indicated that buster has already risen to the top of his class and is currently ranked #1 with 3 TKO's. In this morning's teleconference, Buster reminded the fans about the May 3 boxing event at Barnes Auction. Buster say's "I will be READY to knockout Earl the Pearl no later than the 5th round." Tickets are going fast but a few seats remain. You may purchase a ticket by contacting the Lewis County Professional Sports Council or Howard "the Bear" Spears, Executive Director.
  4. Outside of tonight's basketball game, the next big sports event in Lewis County will be on Saturday, May 3 at Barnes Auction. The Main Event of the night will be the match between former East Coast Heavyweight Champion Earl "the Pearl" Taylor, whose only career loss was to Evander Holyfield in 1998, against current Lewis County Amateur Heavyweight Contender Joshus "Buster" Keltner whose record is 14-0. Buster's career includes TKO's of featherweights Andy Lawson, Nathaniel Scott, Chris Edgerton, Steve Edgerton, and Brad Tenry. Buster will be leaving this Sunday for 8 weeks of intense training at the Tennessee School of Boxing in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon his return he will face Earl "the Pearl". There are several other matches scheduled on the card for the event including the highly touted match-up of Travis "Big Mac" McKissack and Little Jerry Brown ODB. Also on the card will be grudge matches between Richard "Lone Wolf" Duvall seeking revenge on Rodgo, Eugene Grinder will face his long time rival Howard "the Bear" Spears, and Rambo will face Linda the Janitor Lady. Tickets will be on sale at the Basketball game tonight for $10. Tickets at the door on May 3 will be $15. In interviewing for this story, Buster told reporters,"I am going to shock the world on May 3". Stay tuned for more on this breaking story.
  5. Thanks PR Man that was a great story about a truly great American athlete and war hero. Keep the Bios coming, they are the best stories ever on Coacht.
  6. The Legends returned to the Court Last Night with a card full of exciting action. Prior the the game, LBA Vice-Commissioner Hubie Brown Smith led a heart wrenching ceremony honoring Lewis County Basketball Legend Joshua "Buster" Keltner. Keltner was presented a copy of the current Sports Illustrated Swim Suit edition. Tears streamed down the cheeks of players from both squads as well as fans when the ceremony took place. Buster will be taking a leave of absence during the months of March and April to attend the Academy. In accepting his award Buster had these comments,"Words cannot express what I am feeling right now. I am sure that the swimsuit edition will keep me company while I am away at the training academy. Every time I look at it, I will be reminded of my Legends teammates and fans. You are the greatest!" The action started with the team of Buster, Rodjo, ODB, Jumpin Jonah Keltner, Hubie Brown Smith, and Ryan Reynolds facing off against the team of Josh and Derek Powers, Lance "Penny" Dabbs, "Hot Rod" Carter, Dennis the Menace, and Big Game James. The games were pretty close throughout but in the end, Buster' team won the series 3-1. During game 3, a strange and unexplained event took place ODB mysteriously walked off the court and disappeared with the swimsuit edition. As of midnight last night local law enforcement was investigating the disappearance. More on this bizarre story as it develops.
  7. It is time to make notice of one of the Lewis County's most recognizable Basketball Legends Richard Duvall III. As just a baby Richard was abandoned by his parents and left in the care of his elderly grandmother. Richard grew up in the crime plaqued housing developments of Swan Avenue in Hohenwald's notorious East Side neighborhood. Through his school years Richard was subjected to years of both verbal and physical abuse by his classmates and peers. This all came to cease when Richard befriended another future Basketball and Baseball Legend Larry "Rodjo" Rodgers. Rodgers saw some potential in Richard's game and made hime his apprentice. Richard began hanging out at the courts with Roy and through the years evolved into a tenacious perimeter defender and three point shooter. In 1992, Richard earned a spot on the Panthers JV squad and led the team in three-point shooting percentage. Fans will remember Richard for his career highlight game at Page High School when Richard put on a three-point shooting clinic drawing even a huge applause from the Page crowd. After the game in which Richard hit a three at the Buzzer to win, fans from both sides rushed the floor to celebrate. Many fans even asked Richard for his autograph including Page Basketball Superstar Orlando Branch who still has Richard's autograph on the wall at his home in East Nashville. In the fall of 1994, Kissel Bros. Rides and Shows brought their company to Hohenwald for the South Central Area Fair. Richard met and fell in love with Sonya "The Jungle Lady" and joined the Kissel company. After two good years of marriage, the relationship came to an abrupt halt on a cold night in Michigan. Depressed from loosing the love of his life, Richard made his way back to Hohenwald to resume his career in inventory at Kelsey's and Crowell's.Richard was also employed by the Lewis County Herald as a Sports Authority. Richard again began spending time at the courts in 2000 and renewed his friendship with Rodjo. Another highlight of his playing days included the day Richard and Rodjo defeated Adam Melton and Michael Creasy in 2 on 2 at LCMS. Fans will remmember that this was the day Richard perfected his patented defensive move known as the "Piggyback" foul that he used throughout the game to frustrate the sharpshooting Creasy. After a series of violent fights erupted at the courts between Richard and Little Jerry, Richard decided to retire from the game of Basketball. Not long after his retirement, Richard accepted a position on the LCMS Basketball staff to serve as recruiting coordinator and bus driver. Richard was truly dedicated to his work with the basketball team as was evidenced by his outstanding attendance at games and practices. By season's end Richard had helped lead the Raiders to a winning record. His name was even being mentioned for other area coaching vacancies. This all came to a devastating end when Richard was betrayed by his lifetime best friend Rodjo which caused Richard to lose his coaching position. Despite the highs and lows throughout his career. I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU Richard Duvall for your contributions to Lewis County Basketball.
  8. I would like to share some of the history of Jonah Keltner. Jonah and Josh were recently voted by the fans as the best 1-2 punch in the Legends Basketball Association. It all started in the early 1990's in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. Jonah lived 15 miles from town so he had to ride his bicycle all the way to Mt. Pleasant to play at the courts either at "Macedonia" or "Mink Slide". The courts in Mt. Pleasant can be a tough place for a small red-headed boy from the country. Despite much heckling and abuse from the Town boyz, Jonah was determined to improve his game. Finally at 12 years old Jonah made the Mt. Pleasant Middle School team coached by the Great Dewitt Whittaker and the Legendary Mike "Bud" West. Jonah led the Tigers to the county Championship where they were the only team in Maury County to defeat the mighty Whitthorne Tigers. After his 8th grade year, his family purchase a ranch/estate in Western Lewis County. Jonah earned a place on the Panther Basketball squad. He became a four year letterman and started every game his Junior and Senior season helping the Panthers earn their first winning record in over 10 years. Since that time Jonah has completed his Bachelors Degree and continues to be one of the most feared and respected members of the Legends Basketball Association.
  9. In honor of the excitment being generated by the LCHS faculty/student game, I thought that it would be nice to go back and recognize some of our favorite legends by giving all of the fans a personal history of each player. I will begin this thread with the very first Lewis County Legend Howard "The Bear" Spears. I will invite others who have historical background information about other Legends to add to this post. It all started back in 1970 when the Bear was a starting forward on Eugene Grinder's Panther squad. The Panthers paid a visit to state Powerhouse Columbia Central who had 6-9 All-American candidate Lee Fowler. Prior to the game Eugene put his arm around the Bear and said, "Bear we've got a chance to make history tonight if you can shut down their big horse Fowler." The Bear responded by holding Fowler to the lowest point total of his career while at the same time lighting up the scoreboard for the Panthers. As a result the Panthers were the only team to defeat the mighty Lions that season. At the end of his senior season before moving on to become the SEC Player of the Year, Fowler was asked by a reporter who was the toughest opponent he ever faced? Fowler said I can answer that in two words: "the Bear". From that point on the Bear left his mark on Panther Basketball History. Since that time the Panthers have produced a long line of outstanding Post players such as Donnie Ellison, the Gooch, Lee Burklow, Josh Keltner, Darren "Big Game" James, Kyle Clayburn, and currently Jeff Sparkman. For his many contributions to Panther Basketball History and for being the first Lewis County Legend, I would like to say this to the Bear: THANK YOU
  10. In this morning's Memorial Park Report, Park League Commissioner Howard "The Bear" Spears reported that an investigation is under way concerning the Keltner's alleged point shaving scandal. The Bear stated,"As a result of the numerous allegations against the Keltners for shaving points, I have decided to go back and review film of their 799 wins to determine if any illegal activity has been taking place. If there is clear evidence to support these reports of score tampering, then I will have no choice but to impose the death penalty on the Keltner's this season." The staff at League Headquarters is currently reviewing numerous game films and a verdict could be reached as early as Monday.

  12. I have been hearing a lot about the Lewis County Legends and I was wondering how the group got together? Did any of them play college ball? Do they all still reside in Lewis Co. or do they come from all over the state to play ball? If people wanted to come to a game, when and where do you play?

  15. It was reported on a Kentucky Wildcats fan site that several prominent boosters are making an effort to convince the UK Athletic Department to relieve Coach Tubby Smith of his Coaching Duties at season's end unless the Cats make it to the final four. The one name that keeps popping up among the fans is "The Bear." The one thing that might prevent the Bear from going to the Bluegrass state is the fact that he would have to play his alma-mater and first love the Tennessee Volunteers. Those sports fans who have been around since the late 70's will remember that Spears once served as a graduate assistant on the UT Men's staff under the legendary Coach Ray Mears. Spears was credited in playing a major role in landing Blue Chip recruits Ernie Grunfield and Bernard King. After Coach Mears retired, Coach Spears joined Pat Summitt and played a major role in helping establish the women's program as a national power. After this, he left Big Orange Country to return to his home Lewis County to rebuild the basketball program that he had led to greatness as a player in the early 70's. After leading the Panthers to back-to-back 20+ win seasons, the Bear walked away from the game of basketball. He purchased a hundred acre ranch in Western Lewis Country and began an internet business. Since this time, the Bear's name has been mentioned in virtually for every major Coaching position around the country. When will the Bear make his long awaited return?
  16. In this mornings Memorial Park News, it was reported that TSU Athletic Director and President have contacted the legendary Coach Howard "the Bear" Spears about the Men's Head Coaching Vacancy. Folks will remember from last Spring that "the Bear" was a finalist for the Arkansas Men's job and the Vanderbilt Women. It is believed that the Bear's brother Marty, a proud graduate of TSU, mentioned the bear's name through some of his Big Blue connections to get the process started. Anyone familar with Marty knows he is an avid supporter of Big Blue athletics. It was also reported that Spears intends to name his all time favorite player and apprentice Joshua "Buster" Keltner as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. It is rumored also that coaching legends Larry George Davis and Wayne Tatum will come out of retirement to round out the staff. A staff of this caliber would certainly boost excitement around the Gentry Center to a level not seen since the days of the legendary Ed Martin and Truck Robinson. More on this story as it develops.
  17. I was just wondering what the relationship between Butch Hopkins and Brian Brown is like off the court. Are they friends or do they really despise each other?
  18. This morning Howard "the Bear" Spears, President of the Lewis County Sports Council announced that a Pep Rally will be held this afternoon at the SEC (Spears Entertainment Center) in honor of tonight's mega-matchup between Rodgers Dodgers and Keltner's Kannibals. The contest will be a showcase of great talent and coaching as Rodger's Dodgers will unleash a full-court fun-n-gun style of play versus Keltner's Kannibals stingy half-court defense with a power inside game. Also an all-star three man officiating crew has been acquired for this intense rivalry. The battle royal will begin this afternoon at approximately 4:45 pm. Come out early if you want a good seat. All junior pro basketball coaches attending the game are encouraged to sit behind the team benches as Keltner and Rodgers will surely be putting on a coaching clinic.
  19. travel to the Music City for major sports and music events. Spears arena will from now on be referred as the S.E.C. (Spears Entertainment Center). Fans are encouraged to arrive early Thursday night as seating may be limited.
  20. Yes Basketball fans, the announcement was made this morning by the Lewis County Sports Council that there will be a black and gold intrasquad scrimmage this Thursday night at Spears Gymnasium. Joshua "Buster" Keltner will put his 2-0 coaching record on the line against Larry "Roy" Rodgers who has a 9-1 record. The game will begin sometime around 4:45 pm. In making this announcement, Howard "the Bear" Spears, President of the Sports Council, had these comments "After my internet company purchased the downtown arena in Hohenwald it was renamed Spears Arena. I have pledged to the sports fans of Lewis County to provide quality sports entertainment. This match-up of Buster's Gold squad versus Roy's Black squad is just the first of many amjor sports venues that fans can look forward. We are also in negotiations with several area Wrestlers at this time and are putting together a card for an event in the near future. Also fans can look forward to Spears Arena being the host site of several major concerts of Country Music's Biggest and Brightest stars. Among those musicians currently in negotions are legendary musicians Rob Inman and Six Stroke, Kenny Durham and the Sunshine Band, Larry and Vernalissa Walker." It appears now that Lewis Countians will not have
  21. This next week may mark the long awaited return of "the Great One" Prime Time Rodgers. Roy has been away for two weeks of intensive physical training at a secret government facility. However, his training ends today and in his weekly teleconference he announced that he may return next week to rescue his fallen teammates to greatness. He had a special message for the two MTSU students who have invaded the Legends facility as of late it reads as follows," I will be back in prime-time form in the near future and I will personally send Scooby and Shaggy back to the burro with their heads between their legs - The Great One has spoken". More on this story as it develops.
  22. Randy McNeese or Eddie Bassham would be excellent choices to fill the vacancy. Both are men of high character who the kids like and would play hard for. I believe that either of these two would be an excellent choice. Also, the community needs to get behind the new coach and help in upgrading the facilities. First, the Tigers need a new fieldhouse with a modern weight training facility. Second, the new coach needs a staff of qualified assistants. Mt. Pleasant has the potential to be a contender each year at either the 1A or 2A levels.
  23. You must have the four key elements to run the legendary 34-30. Element # 1-Howard "the Bear" Spears to teach it, Element # 2-Wayne "the Rabbit" Tatum to substitute players, and Element #3-Larry "Catman" Davis to chart turnovers, Element #4-Price Robinson to play the back and block shots. Since we do not have any of the necessary four elements, then it would be futile for us to attempt to play such a highly complicated defense.
  24. The Lewis County Legend's Team Captain Josh "Buster" Keltner will make his coaching debut tonight in Perry County at Linden Middle School inside Willie Hudson Athletic Center at 5:00pm. All friends and Legends fans are encouraged to arrive early as seating may be limited. By the way, Coach Keltner, the team bus leaves at 4:15.
  25. It sure was good to hear from you again Coach. I had heard that you had sunk into depression considering the recent play of your favorite teams UT and the Titans. Have no fear, I am confident that just like you always do, they will bounce back with a fury! I too am interested in knowing just how many names Opie has on here. I would guess that he is Kelt, Keltner, Knight, ODB, Fadeaway, and Historian, and could possibly be others. Anyways, Big O makes his coaching debut this thursday night. A capacity crowd is expected so fans may want to arrive early to catch Big Red on the sidelines.
