  1. So, I have Dragonmaster over in the Whitehaven/Collierville thread talking about how they (Collierville) don't ever get any calls. Then I had to 'one up him' with the incedent with our HC being ejected from the Germantown game because of shirt tails ... yeah, you read that correctly ... shirt tails. (He had to sit out the entire game following that game) Now you want to say that the refs favor Houston? Or are you sayin' that the ref's just find ways to throw flags against Cordova? Which is it? ...
  2. This is a big 2A game in Memphis. Trezevant is a Region 7 team. Mitchell is a Region 8 team. Both are 4-4 on the season. Trezevant's one region loss cam to MAHS via forfeit. Mitchell doesn't have a region loss. However, they have an 'L' on their schedule from a Region 7 team already. They lost to Douglass by a score of 12-7. Trezevant just beat Douglas this past Monday night by a score of 36-14. With this being a Thursday night game and Trezevant just finished playing this Monday night ... that gives them a really short week. Really short. More then likely, Mitchell will win their last Region 8 game against Fairley next week resulting with a 1 seed. They (Trezevant and Mitchell) could very well meet up again in the playoffs If they both advance in the playoffs. Food for thought.

  7. That's the standard way of thinking. Houston's passing game is pretty decent. It could be a decent game. I don't know if I believe that, but i thought I would throw that out there. Where are my Cordova posters? What do you guys think?
  8. Tell me it isn't so. Collierville? Your coaches don't think that they get calls? Well, I guess all coaches think that the refs have it in for them. I know the Whitehaven coaches and fan base have that lil' nugget runnin' around in our head. I must say this however ... it's been my experience here recently that the tone will be set by the white hat. If the white hat is anal, then the hankies will fly. If the white hat is laid back, then the hankies will, for the most part, remain in the pockets. Case in point, our HC got ejected from a game this year because the white hat was being a stickler for jersey's being tucked into the pants. He warned/threw flags against the team on three different occasions in the game. On the third penalty, the white hat told the HC that he was ejected from the game, per the rules. The HC was also required to miss the next game, which he did. (The players were told repeatedly about their jersey's during the game by the coaches, however the White Hat carried out his word on this matter ... the players realized their failure to comply resulted in their coach being ejected ... it was a hard lesson to learn, but learn it they did ... guess who is conscious about jersey's being tucked in during the game now? The players.) That was a first for me. I had never seen a white hat actually throw out a HC because of shirt tails. It happened. Some think he was being to harsh. Regardless, it is a rule. He was enforcing the rule, and he let them know he was serious about it by throwing penalty flags. They continued to not take him seriously apparently, so he threw the third penalty flag. Whether or not he was being nit-picky or not isn't the point, nor is it the lesson they learned. He is the authority figure on the field. He sets the standards of play. The coach can talk until he is blue in the face ... they learned how much authority he wields when he threw the third flag and had their HC ejected. BOOM! ... think that didn't hit home? There are going to be others who think this or that about this. I actually think it was a wonderful lesson learned. No one thought that the White Hat would eject the HC over shirt tails. He did. Rules are rules. If the White Hat is telling you that he is taking shirt tails seriously ... take heed. It will serve as a reminder in life as they get older about rules, authority, and compliance ... even if you think the rule doesn't make sense. A rule is a rule, and if the authority figure in charge is going to enforce said rule ... comply. So, excuse our coaches if they feel 'some kind of way' towards the refs and how the Whitehaven games get called. Don't get me wrong, our HC is classy and he is a good leader of men. He wasn't happy about the ejection, but he complied because he knew the rule, but more importantly, he realized he had young eyes on him and they would follow his lead. The players saw how he reacted. They saw him humble himself and comply without making a scene. They learned a big thing about being a MAN on how he handled that situation. The team kept its composure, tucked in their shirt tails, and dedicated the rest of the game to winning it like he would have wanted them to do. The team could have imploded, but they didn't. The OC and the DC handled things competently. However, the lesson learned can't be overlooked ... all because the White Hat was being anal about shirt tails.
  9. White Station is the favorite in this game but they better be careful. Germantown's record does not indicate how good they are. They are better then their record and if Whiet Station goes into this game just sleep walking, they could come away with an 'L'. I don't know what will happen to White Stations seeding if they lose to G-town, but you don't want to risk it. The higher the seed going into the post season, the better. If you are G-town, you don't want to risk not being able to host a 1st round playoff game because you didn't focus on G-town.
  10. Cordova is the favorite in this game. However, they have to be careful as well because this has TRAP GAME written all over it. Both Whitehaven and Cordova can't afford to be looking ahead to next week's showdown and not give this week's opponents the attention they deserve.
  11. This is a big games for Whitehaven. Whitehaven is the favorite. However, Collierville is not to be over looked. This has TRAP GAME written all over it. The Haven needs to focus on this one. Time to clean up the penalties as well. We can't afford to overlook Collierville by looking at the Cordova game at the end of the season. We need to focus on the here and now. The coaches have done a good job in the past of keeping the team's focus on the opponent at hand. This is senior night as well. So, focus is of extreme importance. They are teenagers, and this is the seniors last hoorah ...so we don't want to rain on any parades either. I'm confident that the coaches will keep them even keeled while allowing them to enjoy the experience. Nobody wants to be Scroodge either.
  12. I think Arlington wins this game. However, you don't know.

  17. Week 9 prep football preview John Varlas , john.varlas@commercialappeal.com7:02 p.m. CDT October 13, 2016 (Photo: Chris Desmond/Special to The Commercial Appeal) With three weeks left in the high school football regular season, the playoff picture is starting to come into focus. Here is quick look at how the regions shape up heading into Friday's games. Region 4-6A: All eight teams are automatically in. Undefeated Whitehaven and Cordova are locks to host in the first round with surprising Houston and White Station also closing in on a top-four finish. Arlington, Collierville, Germantown and Bartlett will likely be on the road. Region 8-5A: The Oct. 28 game between Brighton and Bolton is looming large; those two are tied for second in the league at 3-1 behind undefeated Central. Southwind and Munford are both 2-2, although the Jaguars own a victory over the Cougars. Friday's game at Crump against Central is a huge one for Southwind. Region 8-4A: Barring major surprises, the winner of the Oct. 28 game between East and Ridgeway will be the champ and top seed with the loser finishing second. The Craigmont-Millington winner will be third and the loser fourth. Region 8-3A: Raleigh-Egypt can do no worse than second; the Pharaohs will be the favorites against Sheffield in Week 10 and finish with a surprising Fayette-Ware team that is 3-1 and tied for Bolivar Central with second. Covington (2-2) has Fayette-Ware and Sheffield remaining, while Melrose (1-3) finishes with Bolivar Central and Hamilton. Region 8-2A: Mitchell is in the driver's seat with Westwood also in. Oakhaven and Fairley are currently tied for third, and they'll meet in Week 11. Region 7-2A: MAHS and Douglass are both undefeated in the league with Trezevant trailing due to its forfeit loss to the Lions. The Red Devils have yet to play MAHS or Trezevant though. Hillcrest will finish fourth barring a major upset against Trezevant in the finale. Region 8-1A: The top four make the playoffs, and this is a four-team region. Which means the KIPP-Middle College winner in Week 11 will be the champ with the loser finishing second, and Booker T. Washington and Middleton are playoff-bound despite being 1-5 and 1-6 respectively. Division 2-AA West: All four teams are in. Briarcrest has already beaten CBHS and can take a huge step toward the title with a victory tonight at MUS. MUS and CBHS meet on Oct. 28. St. Benedict needs a big upset to escape the cellar. Division 2-A West 1: University School of Jackson has the toughest schedule remaining with games against current league-leader Fayette Academy and St. George's. The defending state champion Gryphons finish with Tipton-Rosemark and USJ. Division 2-A West 2: Lausanne is in control with winnable games against ECS and FACS remaining. Should the Crusaders lose to the Lynx, that could vault Harding up to second; the Lions have Northpoint and ECS still to play. GAME OF THE WEEK (5) Briarcrest (6-1, 1-0 Division 2-AA West) at (3) MUS (7-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. Storylines: As mentioned above, the winner here controls its own destiny in the title race. It figures to be a very interesting match-up; quarterback Jackson Walker and the Saints boast the second-best offense in Shelby County (398.1 yards per game) while MUS has the best defense, allowing just 131.6 yards per contest. OTHER DANDY DOZEN GAMES (6) CBHS (5-2, 0-1 Division 2-AA West) at St. Benedict (3-4, 0-1), 7 p.m. Storylines: The loss to Briarcrest two weeks ago was costly for the Brothers, but they can secure a first-round playoff game with a victory tonight. And while the Eagles have been playing better, CBHS has too much on both sides of the ball. (7) East (6-1, 2-0 Region 8-4A) at Millington (2-5, 1-1), 7 p.m. Storylines: Thanks to a rock-solid defense (fifth in Shelby County allowing 180.9 yards per game) and a stable of playmakers on offense, the Mustangs have won six straight. Millington has won two in a row after an 0-5 start, but it will take a huge effort to keep East from getting its seventh. (8) Harding (5-1, 1-1 Division 2-A West 2) at Northpoint (3-4, 0-3), 7 p.m. Storylines: The Trojans have the talent to pull the upset, but they'll need to play their best game of the season to do it. Harding is explosive, strong on both lines and its special teams have been terrific. (10) Horn Lake (7-1, 2-1 MHSAA 1-6A) at Olive Branch (0-7, 0-3), 7 p.m. Storylines: The OB fan base is growing restless over the lack of success under first-year coach Pete Hurt. But it should be noted that the Quistors have played the third-toughest schedule in Shelby or DeSoto County. Their opponents (Brentwood Academy, Charleston, MUS, White Station, Southaven, South Panola, DeSoto Central) have a combined winning percentage of .699. Southwind (4-3, 1-2) vs. (11) Central (6-1, 4-0) at Crump, 7 p.m. Storylines: Last week's victory over Brighton was huge for the Warriors, who have won six in a row following a 19-13 loss to MUS in Week 1. Southwind needs a victory to boost its playoff chances with an improved Bolton team on deck next week. OTHER GAMES 7 p.m.: Kirby at Bolton; Wooddale at Brighton; Middleton vs. KIPP at Fairgrounds; Westwood at Lexington Catholic; Lancaster Christian at Macon Road; Overton at Munford; Mitchell at Oakhaven; Hamilton vs. Sheffield at Halle; Tipton-Rosemark at St. George's; 7:30 p.m.: Fayette-Ware at Covington

  21. That is throughout the entire classification. There are big games like that in every region coming up. Case in point in Region 4, Whitehaven is at Cordova on Oct. 28th.
  22. Agreed. This is the best bias-less stab at it that I've seen.
  23. First, let me give you a great big kudos for the work you put into generating this. Great Work. I think we can all look this and work with it knowing its shortcomings. There is no perfect system of analysis, even using empirical data, but this is absolutely wonderful! It is totally absent of bias.
  24. BHS ... did you read cardsfan little quip? Is that 'smacktalk' I'm reading?
