  3. My two sons played this past season in a town east of Lebanon, and I will say for a fact that they will never play for that league again. Not only was it very disorganized, the coaches kids played the majority of the snaps while several other kids didn't play hardly at all. The team only had 3-4 decent players, and the rest were about the same. Some of the coaches kids and the kids of their friends didn't even make all of the practices, but come game time, they were on the field. It was very disheartening to look at 6, 7, and 8 year olds when they ask why they didn't get to play like the other kids did. One of the games, the head coach walked in with one kid, and his parent, and really built the kid up and talked about how he was going to play "a lot" snaps at QB that game. The kid was so excited, because he had been nothing but the scout team QB for practices. He played all of two snaps in the game, one being an offside by the tackle, and the other a busted play when the center snapped the ball and then didn't block anyone. Needless to say, that parent was very ticked when he had to explain to his son why the coach didn't do what he said he would.

The league had the mission that every kid would play...equal amounts, but many of the kids saw very limited time. The coaches were obviously in a win first, teach last mode, because there was very little instruction, just a lot of yelling when things didn't go right in the games, never mind the fact that they never worked on them in practice.

On top of all that, the president of the league used it as a personal fundraiser most of the year, since he was out of a job. I sometimes wonder exactly where my $100 league fee went. Probably beer and ice cream.

  4. Is it possible that the landscape changing in Rutherford County has as much to do with Riverdale's performance(more schools, etc...) as coaching? Diluting the talent base can be a big issue - remember that ravenwood and brentwood were combined just 5 years ago. just a thought.

There is probably more to this than any of the other theories out there. Schools go throught cycles with kids. New middle schools open up and shift better kids to other zones as well. The time of one school dominating Rutherford County has probably come and gone.

  5. Great guy, would be good for Blackman.

I have to agree. I think he would be a great asset for Blackman. He's coached Davidson and Rutherford Counties and been on some impressive staffs as both Offensive and Defensive Coordinator. Organization is a strong suit for him, and on top of all that, he's a great teacher in the classroom. No I don't owe him money, I've just worked with him and know he's a high caliber person that would do a great job given the opportunity.

  6. Solomon, it was a great game...back and forth throughout the 2nd half. 3-3 at the half...it looked like Marshall Co would win in a walk when they went up 13-3 but Lexington kept fighting and found a way to win it in the end. Marshall Co. couldn't stop Lexington's running game and the QB for Lexington had a nice game throwing the ball too.

Hats off to Don Thomas' Marshall Co. team...they played a tough game...hard to lose one like that, but they did.

  7. Lexington played the best VB I have seen them play in the last four years. Their setter last night (#30-Sorry don't know her name) was just tremendous & she was rewarded with an All Tourney team spot. Dee went off last night against us (tourney MVP) and Hannah/others didn't miss many opportunities either. I truly believe their recent game against Greenbrier really helped them see what it would take this year. They may not win it all if they make it to State, but I guarantee you, if they make it and play like they did last night, there will be some teams from East & Middle TN that will remember them this year. Congrats to Dee & Hannah and the other girls and good luck. I hope we are fortunate enough to see them again soon too. (Just with a little different outcome /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> )

I am not wanting to jinx USJ or Lexington, but DC & D'burg are not strong this year.

I hope you guys make it back up here to Mid TN. Good Luck!

  8. Maybe it's time for some of the Smaller Colleges around Nashville to step up and offer their facilities. If I were coaching a Belmont, or Lipscomb, I'd be on the phone right now with the TSSAA trying to woo the tournament for next year. Money for the school/program and a leg up in recruiting...sounds like a win-win situation to me.

  9. Curious to know who filled the Mt Juliet coaching position? What about Lavergne? District 9AAA is definitely in flux this year with a slew of new coaches.

P4k...i was told by a parent that the new coach at LaVergne was a former player at Wilson Central but I haven't had time to confirm it for myself. I'll see what I can find out.

  10. Yep, you are right. Thought Lebanon would still be in 7AAA. Welcome to the meat grinder. As you can see, there are no weak sisters in 7AAA nor were there many in 9AAA either. Every sport is tough and the Principal and AD have to take each sport and handle it carefully. This has got to be one of the toughest Districts in the State. And while we'll miss Lebanon, Warren, White and Cookeville, getting Wilson, Smyrna and Lavergne is exciting too. And not as much driving.

This was long overdue and I'm glad to see all of the Rutherford County Schools (with Wilson Central) in one district. From a driving/location standpoint, this only makes sense. WC was the closest of the Wilson County Schools so that makes sense to me as well. WOW, this will be a tough district...in every single sport. I can only imagine how the district tournaments will shake out each year. We had been hearing about the move for years, and every time the TSSAA would meet, we'd hear "This will be the year they put all the Rutherford County Schools in one district." Also, from a volleyball standpoint, I'm sure the coaches at Lavergne, Smyrna, and Wilson Central are glad they won't have to match up with a Williamson County School in the Sectional, although those teams that come out of Chattanooga are no cake walk.

As for the overall A, AA, AAA split....all I can say is FINALLY! Volleyball is growing more and more in popularity each year and it's about time that the TSSAA recognized that. Lots of Tennessee girls are earning college scholarships in our sport and the number are growing each year. With 4 classes now (A, AA, AAA, and D-2) playing for a state championship on the big stage, more girls of have the opportunity of a lifetime to be in the spotlight. Looking back on my 2006 team, 8 of the 10 girls I carried on the varsity team earned at least partial scholarships to play college volleyball. I know a lot of the other sports can't boast those kinds of numbers, and its a testament to 1) the work ethic of those girls, and 2) the growth of our sport on a national level. For those of you that are reading this and haven't attended a volleyball match in the past few years, I challenge you to go to a match somewhere. I promise you if you see two great teams play...and you see just how hard some of these girls can hit the ball...how they dive on the floor to make a great save...how high they can jump to block a ball at the net...not the mention the team work, hustle, spirit, etc....YOU WILL BE HOOKED.

  11. not then, he started selling securities but he was a very good coach and would be successful in anything he did.

Thanks for asking bb4me...and thanks for the kind words PHargis. I'm a financial advisor for Edward D. Jones in Cookeville. Great Job and it allows to still be in coaching, albeit in a completely different roll than before. Im coaching both my sons baseball teams now and loving every minute of it. I still keep up with the sport and my girls....Congrats to Anna Garrison, Sarah Thacker, and Sunni Jackson who all signed scholarships from LaVergne to various colleges around the South.

On a side note, I am sure that LaVergne will have a new volleyball coach this fall...although I don't know who it is. Best of Luck to all of my friends this fall...I will be around and hope to see everyone at our favorite sport this fall.

  12. The Upper Bracket has the two best teams...USJ and Goodpasture...the winner of this one will probably be the champs. Lipscomb has a gift the first round....Anderson Co. will have a tough match up in Bolivar and Will Irvin....so I think Lipscomb probably wins this much weaker bracket.

  13. Yea, I was really lookin forward to the rush of running from field to field between the big red and Huntingdon as was the case the last 2 years. But this year the running will be from baseball to softball. My daughter made it too. Is MTCS where Pattersons buddy coaches?

    Yes, MTCS is the place.

Congrats on your daughter as well, too. Wow, I can't believe you and Stacy have kids in HS now...but it has been 20 years since we graduated. My oldest (8) is in junior little league and my youngest is in T-ball (6). I have my oldest hitting from both sides of the plate and we have been working on drag bunting from the left side today. My youngest has some serious speed but they won' t let you drag bunt in T-Ball. Man, its fun getting to teach them the game now...they finally just this year started taking a serious interest in it so maybe in a few years we'll be get to go watch some game with a little more on the line than just a passing interest. Good luck to you guys.

  14. Newstang, I think you'll like the MTCS field very well. It's as good or better than Blackman's field. Congrats on your son's team making it back to Mboro. When I get back from St. Louis Wednesday afternoon, Patterson and I might try to ride over and see you guys play. Hate the Big Red didn't make it back, but they gave Lipscomb a good run at it.
