1. QUOTE(Maynardette @ May 18 2007 - 07:21 PM) 826462205My son broke up with his girlfriend last fall, and for financial purposes took in a roomie named Eric. He is a Marine, and very, very proud of his term he spent in Iraq. After getting to know him while I was in Florida, I was impressed with him. A fine fellow, and I am sure he is a great soldier who unconditionally believed in his first commission over there. However, he witnessed some things over there that I won't go into here, and he has to go back for a second commission in August. He does not want to go. He will, but he does not want to because he totally believes that the Iraqi people will NEVER buy into democracy as a form of government, and he watched more than one of his fellow Marines die for a mission he knows will, in the end, come to nothing. He is the only person that was over there that I got to know personally.

I look awful in red, but I will for Eric and his buddies. I worry about them.

I have a cousin, who will go back to iraq for his second tour in july. He doesn't want to go either but will as his duty. It seems in his short life, he's not quite 25, he has seen too much. Very shortly after his first tour in Iraq, he was sent into New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, (he's in the Louisiana National Guard). Despite news reports, they were there before Heraldo and the other national "news" people. He got married last summer and now will be deployed again. All our service people need our prayers and support. Sorry for rambling, he's on my mind today.

  2. QUOTE(Maynardette @ Apr 17 2007 - 06:08 AM) 826439158How would a university, especially one the size and layout of VT do a lockdown at all? The thing that keeps going through my mind is knowing there are parents whose kids are attending VT, then hearing about this horrible event, then calling the kid's cell phone and not getting an answer.

It's not just kids at VT. Kids all over Tennessee and elsewhere probably got calls. I know mine did. She was in class. I thought it was the longest class in the history of the college. However, it was only about an hour before I got my call back. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this tragedy.

All of us have visited colleges in lots of towns all over the United States. Locking one down would be like locking down a small town. It is terrifying to think about. It's hard enough to "let go" without having to worry about this!

  3. Hey may...

Congrats on the smoke free days. If you have pain meds because of the burns, use them to your advantage to not smoke.

Here's my story. I quit about 5 years ago. I went to the hospital with a perforated appendix. Ambuance, lights, sirens and all. That was a Thursday afternoon. The following Monday afternoon, when I actually realized I wasn't in "he**", I realized I hadn't had a cigarette either. So, the following week, with the morphine drip, i continued not smoking. The smoking area was 5 floors down, and I was in pain. It wasn't worth it. After I was released, I just didn't feel like stopping at a store for cigarettes, and my non-smoking husband wasn't fixing to volunteer to stop either. The emotional attachment is the part that will get you, long after the physical addiction is gone.

My theory is that everyone needs morphine to quit, but I know you can do it too. Good luck!

  4. Sorry, i just saw this today (3/11/07). Been doing other stuff. FHU plays Wed, March 14 at the NAIA tourney at 8:30 am. Last i heard, Stacy was still seeing the doctor weekly. She has been able to be at all the games though. Sorry, I don't have any "inside" information! :D

P.S. NAIA tourney is at Oman Arena in Jackson

Were you on the gym floor when you took these. And how far away were you? Did you do alot of cropping or just zoom in while you're taking the shot? I enjoy taking pictures, but am along way from where you guys are!

  6. it's been about that long for me too. Some days .... i still could... but the thought of quitting again is horrible. i quit after being in the hospital with emergency appendectomy. after 4 days of morphine i figured the nicotine addiction part was gone. the emotional all in your head part was the hardest... 8 months later my mom passed away with lung cancer. that sealed it. i will try my best never to smoke again. it wasn't a pretty way to go.

CONGRATULATIONS .. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. and as a benefit, i have learned alot of interesting tidbits while not having to go outside to smoke during halftime...

  7. I for one am very confused as to why a coach would say something like this. If you have spoken to the coach and he doesnt deny that he made the statements then i would definitely take it to the next level. However as a coach myself, i find it hard to believe that any coach would say that as we all want our players to play hard and play their best as it makes the "team" better. I am also aware of the "favoritism" that happens in some programs where a player is played above someone who is better than them just because he or she might be in a lower grade. As a parent, if i didn't get the correct answers that i felt not only i could live with but more importantly that was fair to my child i would just transfer the child out and let the coach compete against him/her.

I agree with Del. But i am only a parent. i would try to stay non confrontational and find out all the facts. if necessary, i would move and let the coach compete against her.

  8. Bballfan, I find your list amusing. I was sitting at the table during dinner tonight and told my wife that I plan to put out a much bigger and better selection of tomato plants this year. :D Funny isn't it? I believe the wifey is in the cleanup mode for pics and scrapbooks. Money wise, as far as expensive things, I have been watching television on a 27" tv screen for the last eight years. I plan to buy a Sony 60" XBR2 late this summer but first I have to build a built-in wall cabinet with rollup door to hide it. This plan will cost me more than I want to discuss but can't wait to get started.

I also found out Christmas Eve that I will be a grandpa.....dang, that's the first time I typed it and it seems impossible. It's been a wild roller coaster ride of a year and 2007 doesn't seem to be any different.

Congrats on becoming a grandpa. That kid will love climbing on the big screen tv.

i'm sticking with a small garden cause my hubby doesn't like gardening. Good luck with the piano lessons!

  9. Try asking the band director at your "old" high school, or at a nearby church. I sympathize with you though. We are battling empty nest too. Hubby doesn't seem to be very affected so i guess it's just me that's battling. What else is on your list? Mine seems to be a long list, but all the stuff is expensive. The inexpensive list is this winter to organize everything (scrapbooks, pictures, etc.) and throw out all useless paper that seems to multiply. This spring, i plan a small garden with lots of fresh tomatoes.
