  1. A reserve is allowed (one) per service term in NFHS. You may toss and catch or toss and allow the ball to drop. A second toss and catch or drop is an illegal hit/loss of serve. If the server had a RS and then scored a few points and then again has a RS, the scorer should notify the official if they do not remember that that is the second RS.

If I am serving and have an RS, then get subed, my replacement may have a RS during this service term as well. If I sub back in I do not get another RS. This is just for this service term that ends when my team has a loss of rally. Then when I rotate back around to serve again later in the game. I once again will have one RS during that term.

EXCELLENT, oldsetter! Absolutely correct. One RS per server, per term.

Quick-n-dirty: Re-serve is for before the ball is contacted; Replay is for when play is stopped by the official.

  2. Does anyone know rules on students who tranfer from out of state schools to private. For instance if a athlete transfer from GA public school to TN private school are they eligibile to play their sport or do they have to sit out a year. (They are not moving to TN they are staying in GA)

My view would be that since they didn't come from a TN public, there would be no restriction on playing for a TN private. Where is the disadvantage to the TN area schools? Just like the heart of most playing rules, the concept is to prevent an unfair advantage.

  3. What it may be on this Forum somewhere, I con't seem to find it. Could the GLJ please describe the changes in the rules for the upcoming season and what we might see different in the way the signals are given in the conduct of the game? It may get the season off to a more even start.

I'll grab my rulebook in a little while and post, but the two big things you'll notice different:

The libero now serves. Great change. For anyone familiar with the college game, it's an identical process/rules.

The officials' point signal is now different. Instead of "Infraction, Point" you're going to see "Infraction, Side-Out". It's still a point for the other team. The logic is to adopt something similar to the international signals. NCAA is going to this same concept for 2007 as well.

    More later.

  4. My understanding of this rule is that team camps are not scrimmages because results and/or scores are not officially kept. Teams are just there learning skills and coaches are trying out different things. Since teams can not practice until July 30 and can not officially scrimmage until they have practiced 3 days, I guess this camp and others fall outside the rules for 2007-2008.

Reasons for those to not be scrimmages:

    1. No sanctioned officials there.

    2. Still in summer, not in formal pre-season.

    3. Biggest reason: you don't pay the host school to play in scrimmages.

    Just my thoughts.

  5. I'm glad to see volleyball get some coverage, but they need to do this type of thing way more often. I'm in agreement with others: though she's going to be a great player and possibly Tennessee's best ever, there's a lot more teams/players than one incoming freshman. Nice article though.

  6. Catnash is correct about the scorekeeping clinic.

-The biggest change this year is indeed that the libero serves in one position from now on, consistent with NCAA rules and procedures.

The short-n-sweet version of the rule is this: If the Libero replaces player #10, who is listed on the lineup in serving position 3, and serves for #10, the Libero is bound to serve only in position 3. It doesn't matter who or how often #10 gets substituted for - the Libero may only serve in that position every rotation.

-A new section was added about artificial noisemakers. It's more of a guideline for host management and game management.. hopefully we'll never need to use it!

-Coaches now may stand up until the official puts out his/her arm to beckon for serve. After that, they must be seated.

-The point signal has changed. Instead of the former "Violation, Point" type signal, it's now "Violation, Side-Out". Why we can't do what USA and now NCAA do, I don't know. NFHS always wants to put their own stamp on things. But, it's still a point every play, NOT merely a side-out.

  7. Most interesting to me will be Brentwood's district.

-Brentwood is always Brentwood, but losing Kat Hall and the like is never fun. Have an excellent sophomore setter.

-Franklin has plenty of returning talent plus a good, new head coach.

-Independence should be formidable with the Perilli twins and company.

-Ravenwood may have a run at the district title with Hutson and Richardson as the twin towers. If they get some really good setting, look out. Both are on the same club team and had a very good club season.

-Centennial has a GREAT setter in Allison Woods.

It's a setter's district - plenty of height to go around!

I completely agree with BB's Division II analysis. I don't personally care for the Large/Small split, especially with a final 4 type regional system. Oh well. Cream always rises.

  8. I don't think it is Tara Darr. Pretty sure she would have told me about that. Could it be Meredith McIntire?

You are right about Coach Davis. He turned that program around and had it going in a good direction. And he was a good person as well. Is he still coaching? Does anyone know?

He stepped down to pursue other career interests. He is a great guy and a wonderful host... he WILL be sorely missed.

  9. She would be a very good one

I've been trying to pull her in for the last two years... still no luck! On a more serious note, if anyone in the mid-state is looking to get into volleyball officiating, please contact me. The number of schools with programs continues to grow, yet our officials' ranks are somewhat stagnant in number. We especially need people with a background of some sort in the game... even if you've been a casual fan, you're still ahead of several new officials. I will be more than happy to send you in the right direction.

  10. I absolutely didn't take the "it" thing personally!! /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I've been called worse!!!!!

On a bad night, "it" is a compliment! People could yell much worse at an official (right, CU?) /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

  11. Madelyn Hutson (Ravenwood HS, Brentwood) was also chosen to the Select A-1 High Performance program for the same dates and location. Select A-1 is for girls who were born in or after 1992 -- predominately rising freshmen (class of 2010-2011).

This is a tremendous accomplishment for both these young women -- selected over 100s who try out nationally.

She is a TREMENDOUS talent and comes from a wonderful family. Remember the name... she's going to make huge waves and put Ravenwood prominently on the map in the next 4 years.

  12. Who was that poster that said something about well behaved women not making history? /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I guess you just play it like TGLJ....intervene when you have to and try to keep us civil. Do a good job and they may double your salary! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

    Viva la Volleyball!

    OS

For every post she deletes, I'll personally double her salary (triple for OS' posts!) /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

As a group, the volleyball posters here are pretty civil. I need to quit being lazy and post the new rules for 07-08!

  13. Folks, I'd like to introduce play4keeps as the latest addition to the CoachT moderating team. She's been on the boards for a while and I believe she has good judgment. As the audience on CoachT expands, it's only logical that we add a moderator.

That being said, all complaints about moderating should be addressed to play4keeps. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Just kidding.

Welcome aboard, glad to have you!

  14. QUOTE(VballDaddy78 @ May 21 2007 - 08:37 AM) 826463914[/snapback]Isn't there normally an East versus West Vball (HS) Senior All-Star match? Anybody know any details? Like when, where and who's playing?

My understanding is that it's June 21 @ 6:00 pm at Centennial

  15. It's outside the area, but KIVA hosted the Central Zones this year. There was some extraordinary quality ball up there, even in the 13 and 14 year old groups. Our friends from KY (if they're active readers) will attest to this. Ron Kordes and his facility staff and coaching staff are really nice folks and good hosts.

I will attest once and for all that club ball is where it's at. Period.

  16. Before you go, Ha, a question has come up on filming and videotaping that does not seem to be in the TSSAA rules for volleyball but is in the Basketball. What regulations for taping and videotaping matches are there in volleyball? What about at Tournaments? Where is this found?

If a school can do it ( which they can), can the school they are playing do it also at the same time?(Yes) Can someone who is filming to make a profit or to resell be allowed to film?

Nice find,KCdaddy, on the guidelines for the State tournament. As far as regular season play and tournaments, I'd check with the folks hosting the tournament. There's nothing in the rulebook or casebook about video taping, so for officiating purposes, nothing is there. I don't think anyone will ever mind a person filming for personal use.

I'm not sure they could stop you from filming for profit, but have fun marketing that one! :)

P.S. If you decide to do that or know someone who is, the Nashville officials may be interested. E-mail me if so. We've talked about making our own training video/still photographs.
