  1. It is sad that Baylor and Signal Mountain are the only Chatty volleyball being talked about. There was a day that GPS, East Ridge, Red Bank and Notre Dame were always in the mix. What happened, coaches retired, or were forced out.

This won't be popular but I will say it. Club volleyball has had a negative impact on some programs. Parents pay for club, club tells paying parents that their high school coaches are awful, parents get high school coach replaced with a club coach. How many times has this happened in the last 5 years, 20, more?

Club is a business, there are some great club coaches, but there are some great high school coaches. Coach Brock, Coach Neely, were both better than ANY club coach we have ever had.

Now, club has made some average high school coaches look great. Signal Mountain, Baylor, Farragut totally club driven, even on here, some posters, like SJ are really into the club scene. SJ can you even name five high schools that you think are well coached?

  2. I saw my old friends Paul Brock and Dail Cantrell this weekend at the Club tourney here in Chattanooga! My granddaughter plays. It is nice seeing these people who I knew for so long. Paul is retired from GPS but Dail is still going strong at Anderson County. His daughter's team beat my granddaughters team in the semi finals. He told me all of his daughters team were 6th and 7th graders from the SAME middle school! Anderson County is going to be loaded for the next few years!

  3. I had never heard of Farragut volleyball until I started reading the posts of their coach and fans on this site. The team I saw was average. Now I think everything I read was alie.

Coach should be reprimanded, suspended at the least, in Chattanooga she would be fired.

I agree with the other posters that this is shameful. How can this be ethical? What sort of school lets this go on? If this were football and the coach was caught making up stats there would be a new coach in a hurry.

I liked the setter when I saw her. If she and her mom are involved in this.....?

  4. Stone Memorial is a solid team. They are the best AA team in our area. Not really in the class of Red Bank. They were at the Early Bird, and I thought they were solid. If you have watched Farragut, they play similar to Stone M, but Farr has more talent. Both teams have a couple of strong hitters, but they try to spread the sets around instead of going to the hot hitter. Farr would probably beat Stone in 4, and is probably 3 or 4 points better. Stone doesn't have anybody as powerful as Farr's big outside, and they don't block as well as Farr. Stone is better defensively. Both are inconsistent with serves. Red Bank will handle SM if they meet in sub-state.

  5. I disagree with BrentwoodBabe. As has been talked about the best 8 teams can't all make the state tournament because some will knock others out, and the 2 west TN teams are weaker.

Double elimination helps the stronger team because of the fact that 1 upset won't do the job.

I think these 8 make state:

    1)Ravenwood

    2)Independance

    3)Soddy Daisy

    4)Anderson County

    5)Sullivan South

    6)siegel

    7)Houston

    8)Collierville

Of those 8, only Soddy Daisy or Anderson could beat either Indy or RWood. I think RWood will win it all.

  6. I agree! Soddy has fantastic fans.

I reread this thread and am hot that some of the posts have been delated. I did not start this. I am not from SD but thought it was low class to blame this loss on the fans. Then this Admiral Glascow talks about reviewing tape? Is this guy, or gal, for real? Has to be the coach. AG then blamed the setter, who I really liked.

I am done on this subject. Just a note that I still defend the SD fans, and the setter. Maybe the reason your daughter isn't getting the sets is because she can't do anything with them?

The setter was not why they lost. They lost because SD is simply a better team.

Just a question, is Farragut a school with a lot of rich kids? If so, that explains alot!

  7. Look, I have no dog in this fight. I was at the match, and responded to the comments of a coach or fan who said she wasn't (but oddly had tape of the match) that blamed the loss on the SD fans. That simply wasn't true. I saw nothing out of line. Come to an East Ridge v Boyd B pr a GPS vs Baylor match sometime to see some loud fans.

It bothered me that the loss was blamed on these fans. If that is the case, and the team and coach are that fragile, how are they ever going to win a tournament game?

Also, my comments about "weak" and "slow" was not meant to be critical against the girls. I read these threads, and Farragut fans/players/or coaches get on here and really play up how well you are doing. I simply expected more. The offense is really slow compared to what we see in Chatt. Also, the lack of blocking will keep you from being competitive in the tournaments. I loved your OH and setter, but then Admiral Glascow gets on here and criticizes the setter for not spreading the sets around. My response, in defense of her, was she did what she should be doing and that is getting the ball to the best hitter? Thats volleyball.

SD does it? GPS does it? You only have one power hitter, and she is really strong, why shouldn't she get the most sets? Thats how you win.

SD's fans did not cost you this match, nor were they inappropriate.

  8. I watched the entire match and I didn't see any heckling. I actually sat with some of the Farragut fans and they were more concerned about why certain players weren't included more in the offense. I never heard or saw anything out of line.

I am surprised that you beat Blackman. Also, you have some really good teams to get past before talking about making the state tournment.

I really liked your big outside hitter, what is her name? She is fantastic. The other hitters had problems putting the ball down. Several of the parents were critical of some of the coaching moves.

I also liked the setter. The girls seemed really nice, and I thought showed alot of sportsmanship during a rough day. It is hard when you are so overmatched.

  9. I liked the setter? She and the big hitter worked well together.

If those are your normal hitters why should she spread it around, they were much weaker. It only looked like you had the one strong hitter but they might have been just having a bad day.

Inconsistent hitting will kill an offense. If that is a problem it is a big one. I heard several parents grumbling about who should be playing.

Are you one of the coaches?

I am really curious about Stone Memorial, have you played them yet?

  10. Coach, I agree. Red Bank looks really strong, and I think could win a state championship. They don't have the parents or coaches that get on here and post blowing teams up. I made a point to watch the Farragut team team because a couple of posters were talking about how great they were. I knew that had beaten them earlier in the year, but then I saw where they beat Soddy at the choo choo and I thought they might have something. After watching them play I can only assume Soddy took the day off.

    Red Bank looks good!

  11. Farragut looked average at the Tandem this weekend. They got knocked out first round. They have a really good OH (didn't get name) who hits hard. I also like the setter! The middles were slow and they have 2 really weak hitters. The lack of blocking will make them an easy out against any team that hits hard, or who has 3 or more hitters. They couldn't stop a strong middle. They make too many errors, and when they get blocked they quit hitting. I was not impressed, and made a point to watch them because of the hype which appears to have been dad or coach generated.

How is Karns this year? They looked strong last season. What about Stone Memorial? I think they could make noise in AA.

Does Catholic have anything? Didn't they move up to AAA?

  12. Watched Soddy beat Farragut in the Tandem. They are not in the discussion. Soddy is 2 teams, 1 can beat anybody, the other loses to an average team like Farragut.

Soddy has a great player. If she is on they are fantastic, if not....

Soddy seemed to change things around at the Tandem. I saw them 3 or 4 times, and it looked like they played a different rotation.

Truthfully, I thought GPS would win it all. This is my first year helping coach, and I got tired!!!!

I agree that it will be Houston and Collierville from out west, but I don't expect either to win a game in pool. Siegal is a scary good team, lots of energy. Soddy could beat anyone, but is erratic. I would hate to play them when they are hot. Riverdale looked good this weekend. I love Ravenwood, would pick Indy next. South and Anderson County should both be locks to make state, and like Soddy, I would hate to play either in an elimination game.

I think the following are your top 8:

    1)Ravenwood

    2)Independance

    3)Soddy (when they play well)

    4)Brentwood

    5)Anderson County

    6)Siegel

    7)Riverdale

    8)Sullivan South

Whats rough is that some of your top 8 will knock each other out!

In AA I love Red Bank (beat my alma mater like a drum) and I think Page is strong. Stone Memorial also looks good, and so does CAK. If I were picking I would pick Red Bank.

  13. I thought GPS looked good. Soddy Daisy was ok, and played great to win, but they looked inconsistent. Changing the roation seemed to make a difference. They had a big hitter who carried them when they needed it. GPS coach is a class act.

Saw Soddy beat Farragut pretty easily. I watched this same match at the choo choo, Soddy had improved Farragut looked slow, a lot of hype on this board for an average team, not a state level team.

Soddy, GPS, Baylor should all make state.

  14. I agree with 1 hit wonder status. It takes more than a championship to be a championship caliber program.

Coach talks alot about the history of volleyball in TN. She was around when it began. East Ridge is a volleyball power and Coach Neely is like Coach Paterno at Penn State!

GPS and Baylor are becoming programs. Oolteawah has earned program status.

Coach would say that Father Ryan; Anderson County; Sullivan South, Brentwood and Page are powerhouse programs that shouls always be respected. Like us, they may have a down year now and then, but they show up to fight hard every match, and more ofton than not they will beat you.

Greenbrier is alot like Hume Fogg who had a good run with a great team. One hit wonder.

  15. I shuffled back and forth between the 2 gyms. (East Ridge had the better teams; facility and FOOD)

If Soddy Daisy had 4 starters out they should be state champions! I heard from a guy named junior? talking loud, who seemed to know alot about the team, that they had a big hitter not there. Junior seemed like a good guy, and seemed to know alot about volleyball, so I took him at his word.

I thought ooltewah would be really good this year but Anderson County out played them both offensively and defensively. I liked AC, and thought they were the best all around team I saw, but they missed too many serves.

At RB I really wanted to see Karns (only because the people from Knoxville who post on here make them sound like they are the team to beat) and I thought they were ok? I did not see an impressive OH. Did she play in the Baylor game (the one I saw)? The middles were good, but the Baylor middle was better than either of the Karns middles. Karns seemed really slow. It was obvious that the middles were 100% of the offense. In the second game, which Baylor won, they took the middles out of the game and it was over? Did Karns have all of there players? Did not think Karns was as good as ooltewah, AC or Sullivan South.

All in all, the games at ER were at a higher level.

I think GPS will beat Baylor this year, and I think ER will beat Red Bank. Ooltewah will be the best area AAA. Any of those 5 could make the state tournament. I talked to some Sullivan South fans (maybe the nicest fans I have ever met at a playday) and they think DB is not nearly as tough as last year. They think it will be them and DB, but that they have a shot. They were all over watching Anderson County, and think they are the best team in the Knoxville region.

Biggest disappointment was Catholic. If they are the best team in their district it must really be week. Not impressed at all.

As always Coach Neely ran the best playday around!!!

  16. East Ridge is playing well and will get past Grace to await a Boyd B vs. Notre Dame war. Boyd has been playing well, but Notre Dame is the defending state champ. In a 5 game fight, Boyd wins a tight one.

In the nightcap the Ridge takes the first because Boyd is worn out. Boyd regroups in the second to even the match 1-1. From there the 3rd game goes back and forth until the Nature Boy and the rest of the Ridgers get involved in the match giving the ladies what they need to go up 2-1. from there it is all "fro" as ER wins the region.

Greenbriar should win their region but if they don't they will have a TOUGH road away from home. Some teams play alot better at home and they are one of them. Tough ticket at their place, Boyd will struggle, and GB should join us at state. If GB has to travel, expect a tussle in the ridge! Expect the unexpected. We missed our annual trip th State last year and are a little hungry for arena food. GB if you travel to our house thursday, pack a lunch, it gonna be a long one!
