  1. I saw Bartlett play earlier this week and they were a very solid team, so ill take bartlett, what time does this game start?

    7:00.

This has been an amazing run for Bartlett. A fairly young team overall (sophomores at catcher, short, and third and a soph #3 pitcher), they haven't gotten to the regionals since 2000, haven't gotten to the sectional in I can't even figure out how long. They'd been the last team out in the district tournament two or three years in a row.

First state tournament berth since 1971 and they're in the finals. This has been incredible.

  2. aren't there 8 regions?..........i just think if you win your region in a double elimination tournament you deserve to go to the state tourney ............i have spent the whole week watching a four team tournament at Oakland...........the winner will play the winner of another four team tournament tomorrow night for the championship..........i don't think it's a bad thing to have 8 teams in the state playoffs................i do think the one game playoffs for the region and substate are the wrong way to determine the teams...........regional tourneys should be double elimnation and if you must have a sub state round it should be best of three..........one stud pitcher should not be able to carry a team to the state where you have to have a good staff to win.......just my opinion and i am just a dad who loves the game!..........did make it to mtsu to see the first bartlett/frankin game yesterday,,, you guys look tough!...........should be a great game friday night

I disagree with the idea of taking one from every region, period.

Region 8-AA's representative in this would get beat by whatever score the other team wanted both games. There's other weak regions, but 8-AA is the most glaring. They got beat a combined 43-0 in the sectionals.

I'd prefer three-game series in the sectionals.

Or, for 7-AA vs 8-AA, one doubleheader. :thumb:

  3. Well in this post everyone is going to have their say in which side is best...being from the east i must say that the east is...i just think there is more competition year in and year out with a ton of teams that could go to state if they didn't have to face Farragut, SD, DB, and others...those are just a few powerhouses over here...i don't wnat to rub people the wrong way that is just my personal opinion.

Bring them over for the gauntlet of Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, and Houston. And Cordova, Bolton, Arlington in a few years, Millington, Munford.

It ain't a cakewalk in the west, except for the first round of the regional for the two of Germantown, Collierville, and Houston that get there.

  4. I was talking about Prep being sour. He's on sinking ship. I'm on your side  . DeAngelo broke a lot of records at Memphis that 1 of my close friends and former team mate held. And my cousin and next door neighbor played CB for the Tigers for 4 years back when I was still in grade school. So, I havent been a fan all my life, but I have been 1 for a long time. ;)

Close friend...hmm... Cassinnelli, McGowan, or Arnold? Can't think of any other major RB record-holders off the top of my head, but I've had a long day. A good day, but a long one. :)

Well, glad to have you back (on the baseball boards at least). :P

Thanks. I'll be around a decent amount for a while...not sure how deeply I'll wade into the non-Plus boards, that may depend on what type of employment I am able to come up with. I'll be around occasionally at least though. B)

  5. Spoil you with something and you're always wanting more. Box scores weren't even posted before 2001. Scorebooks were still used, not computer software.

Sometimes there are logistical problems, like no Internet connection, that prevent box scores to be posted. Sometimes it's something as simple as they're still using a scorebook, not a computer.

And the software, as I know you know, isn't something just anyone can pick up and use, and that's not even factoring in the cost of it.

(For those that don't know, the TAS baseball program runs $350.)

  6. Ah, the old 2-4 defense. I love Joe Lee Dunn. I remember when he was at State, the time they beat Florida in Starkville, he ran a 1-4-6 towards the end of the game.

Memphis should have won that game, even without Deangelo.

JLD has been running a 3-3-5 at Memphis. Last year, they ended up only having four healthy linemen, so they had to go to a 2-4.

I don't think anybody in the nation did a better coaching job last year than Tommy West. There's no way a team with four healthy defensive linemen, total, and no passing game should have even been able to think about making a bowl game -- and not only do they make one, they manhandle the MAC champs in it.

As far as the sore loser jab -- no. 1999 is when I was bitter. Last year it shouldn't have even been a game. I was disappointed they couldn't pull it out, but I had zero expectation of winning when I heard DeAngelo was out.

  7. Glad to have you posting again Opp. Been wonderign where in the heck you had been.

UGA/UT is only $32. Vandy dropped theirs to $45 this year. It's all part of it, I could care less. I just hope it finds its way to TV somehow.

I've been working at a D-II college in Arkansas, and covering HS sports on the radio and in the newspapers over there, so I couldn't really spend much time over here.

I'm back home for now, but I'm not sure how long.

  8. Look I'm not even a Memphis fan, I was just giving a little respect to Tommy West and his staff. This coming from a UT fan. I never said they were not good. I think West is a great coach

Be honest with yourself, Memphis is not powerhouse football school. Dont ask me why they cant be....ask some of this kids choosing to go to UT to play in front of 100,000+ fans.

It's not a powerhouse, but again, it's as good a program over the last three years as any non-BCS school.

And for all the orange's recruiting championships, a Memphis team with no DeAngelo Williams, no passing game, and a 2-4 base defensive formation, all due to injuries, had a lead in front of those 100,000 people with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

  9. Is there anyone who can explain why the AA game reports appear as they do? These reports are a great way to be able to inform fans, out-of-town relatives, and others about the games, especially when they are not on the radio or available on-line. They are also kept by TSSAA as part of the historical record. For example, if anyone is interested, here's last year's AA championship: http://tssaa.org/2004Champions/StateBaseba...ssAA/Game15.htm.

As of right now, all Single A, AAA and DII games are posted using Automated Scorekeeper. AA games in Columbia are reported - albeit in abbreviated fashion - while the game reports for the Murfreesboro AA games are not posted at all. Come on ... we can do better than that. :thumb:

Two things. First, I like how the site's still TBA on the AAA bracket for games that have already been played.

Second, the scorer for bracket two in AAA only listed first names for most of the kids. VERY poorly done on their part. (And I'm qualified to say that, because I was one of the ones doing this in Memphis the last two years)

  10. Tommy West has done a very good job at Memphis. He will continue to do so. The attendance has been up since he arrived

It's always been pretty good for the quality of play on the field. Now that it's a good product, they're drawing 40k. They still drew 20-25 even when they were wretched.

  11. He's gonna be a star you can just tell. And congrats to Memphis on the win and representing Tennesse well. Memphis will never be a powerhouse in football, but they are winning, I just wish they could get more support. They are winning conf-usa and bowl games with a roster filled with West Tennesse talent. Over 40 players on that team are from Memphis and West Tennessee even if it is a big rivarly between UT and them, you have to give Memphis thier props for staying in state and recruiting. A lot of those guys are not walk-ons but are under scholarship and thats just a testiment to Tommy West's commitment to staying in state. Life without DeAngelo wont be as good, but it wont be bad either. Joseph Doss from Melrose is no #20 but he will be a great back, and with big Paul Edwards from McKenzie going into his sophmore year in 2006 the O-Line will be getting a big upgrade.

More support? They've averaged 40,000 people three years in a row, with only two SEC home games. And why can't Memphis be a powerhouse in football? As long as Tommy West is there, they'll be good.

They're doing about as well as anybody in the nation that doesn't get a BCS welfare check.

  12. I don't know about the 15 run rule after 3. Is that the rule?

I will say that the Mitchell Coach, players and Admin. were very nice to us. Our players were very complimentary of the Mitchell players and the way they handled themselves. I admire the Coach and the kids for their attitudes. It is a shame the City and King Willie will not provide these kids decent facilities! They deserve better!!!

    Yes, it's the rule.

That's one thing that's nice about the Memphis Redbirds' operation. They're a non-profit organization, and most of their proceeds go to helping inner-city baseball and softball programs -- providing fields, gloves, bats, balls, etc. so they can play. They fund some junior high programs for the city too. I think it'll help make city baseball more respectable in the long run, but it'll take a while for them to catch up.

One thing that's sad is that the park system was one of the first things they cut the budget from -- and that meant the city quit maintaining baseball and softball fields for anyone, period.

  13. Congrats Bartlett on what sounds to have been a great game. Good luck in the Boro! Bring AAA home to the west!!

That 7th inning just about killed me. Went into it up 11-2. Germantown pinch-hits for their 9 and 1 hitters...one gets out, one gets on. Then it goes homer-homer-single-homer-single-single-single, with two pitching changes, before the two pinch hitters strike out their second time up in the inning.

I think we all had the sense that it wasn't going to end easily when Bartlett couldn't get the 10-run rule in the fifth or sixth...but nobody was expecting THAT.

Would have been a much more exciting game to have been a neutral observer!
