  1. i agree the one you are talking about i think refed the single a champ. game and she was terrible , the younger one with dark hair did wayne co. sectional game and she was pretty good but the worst one i saw all week also did wayne co sectional game he was pretty tall and had short grey hair he is the worst offical i have ever seen

The one in the class A game may have been the worst I have seen in a State Tourney in my 30 plus years. TSSAA has to do some thing about the selection process or should I say the "good old boy/girl" process!!!!!

  2. With the recent state champion Manassas crowned, lets start the debate of the greatest teams of all time in Class A. I will throw out some teams that come to mind for me and you all can add your own or lament on what I think.

    BGA of 91-92 and 92-93

Goodpature of 92-93 even though they didn't win state, they did beat BGA by 10-15 in region finals

Perry County of 94-95 and 95-96

East Robertson 1987 team was 36-1 losing only to University Hgts out of Hopkinsville, KY. Had Mr Basketball as a senior( Fitz Jones) and Carlus Groves was a Soph and he was Mr Basketball his Sr year. Also the 1988 team went 37-2

  3. I believe his 1st season was 1985-86 if I am not sure and was an assistant for Dickie Thomas before that

    I'll lose track but:

1990 district co-champs with cookeville (regular season), (1st championship I think) 2nd in tournament, region semi loss to Lincoln Co

1991 district champs, tourney champs, and region champs, state 1st round loss to Ronnie McMahon and McMinn Co in OT

1992 district champs, tourney champs and region runner ups lost to state champion Brainered in substate

1993 district champs, tourney champs and region champs, state semis loss to state champion Sylvester Ford Memphis Farley (runner up was region runner up columbia)

1994 district champs, tourney champs and region runner ups (I think), state 1st round loss to MBA

1995 district champs, not sure about tourney, upset in region semis by Shelbyville

1996 district champs, tourney champs and region champions (I think) state semis OT loss to state champion Tony Harris and Memphis East

1997 - 2001 sketchy for me, those were the white co glory years (one was a region championship and OT subsate loss to brainerd)

2002 district champs, tourney champs, region runner ups to shelbyville...remember this one well, lost in substate to bradley i think

2003 district champs, tourney runner up to Blackman, region semi loss to columbia

2004 district champs, tournament 3rd, region champs over shelbyville, substate loss to Rhea Co

2005 district runner up, tournament runner up to siegel, region runner up to siegel, substate loss to cleveland

2006 district champs, tourney 3rd place, region semi loss to siegel

2007 district champs, tourney champs, region champs, state semis 3 OT loss to Clarksville

2008 runner up in district, tourney 3rd, region semi loss to white co

2009 runner up in district, tourney 2nd, region champs, To be continued.....

Might have messed something up somewhere....but that's what i can remember

Best I can tell by your list, Oakland under coach King has made the sub-state 10 times. Lost in 5 and made the State 5 times, losing twice in the first round and 3 times in the semifinals. I thought they made the championship game one year??

  4. Theyre high school kids. Oakland and Columbia both have rich traditions. I would be worried if they werent cocky. Comparing both teams on paper, Columbia is probably the favorite.

OP you are correct about both having great tradition.Columbia has won 27 District championships, 10 Region championships 15 Substate/sectional appearances 10 State tourneys and 3 State Runner-up (92-93-99). Between Oakland and Columbia they have been dominant teams in Region 4AAA. Columbia did make the state semi-finals in 2003. From 1998 thru 2003 columbia won 4AAA 4 times, just some history. I know that wont help tomorrow, but it will be great to see these two old rivals square off.

  5. Pardon me, but Siegel has had their fair share of games where they have gotten ripped pretty good from the perimeter. Should you meet with Shelbyville, it by no means will be an easy game. Andrews is the best scorer in the region, you heard me right.

Agree with you about Andrews. Having seen all the region teams that are still playing, Andrews is the best scorer. Hammonds is a close second but he has a better supporting cast. If Shelbyville beats Cookeville and gets Twilly back to feed Andrews it could be a very entertaining game. we'll have to wait and see.

  6. Siegel is long and has good hops and very athletic, Oaklands beat us once I see them having no problem with Columbia.

Having seen all the teams play that are in the Region tourney, I would say Siegal is by far the favorite. That said, Oakland might have a slight edge on Columbia, but not by much, an edge to coaching/experience but Columbia is much quicker and deeper of the bench, Shelbyville/Cookeville will be close with out Twilley. I look for all 1 and 2 to advance.

  7. East Robertson 1982-1993 Nine trips to State Tourn. 4 State Championships and 1 Runnerup. Tony Cook (David Lipscomb/MTSU

    Lee Blakemore (Belmont)

    Scott Murphy (APSU)

    Wayne Cook (APSU)

    Fitz Jones (Trevecca) Mr Basketball

    Mike Webb (Rhodes)

    Marcus Bell (Cumberland)

    Jimbo Vaughn (Cumberland)

    Carlus Groves (UT/Europe) Mr Basketball

    David Woodard (Juco in alabama)

These are in no particular order. I'm sure there others

  8. Another good season for Oakland. But, also another season to come up short of the state tourament. Can any one tell me Oaklands history for the last 10 years. Also when was the last time they actually won the game to get to the state. Coach king does a great job, but they seem to come up short this time of year.

  9. The reason TSSAA schools do not play Oak Hill or any other prep school of that type is because TSSAA schools are all governed by National High School Federatin rules. Its not the TSSAA that makes these rules. Its all 50 states that are members of the National Federation. The problem with Oak Hill is that they do not wish to go by NFHS rules. Thats why they have players that are too old to play in high school. They need to play against Jr. colleges or college JV. Sure they can win with older players, just like high school freshmen and sopomores would beat 7-8 grade teams. Its really sad to compare them against regular high school teams.

  10. :P Too bad Shelbyville wasnt playing. They know how to support girls hoops. But thats another story! Congrats to the lady pats and their excellent coach. The best basketball program in Rutherford county is at Oakland.....but its the Lady Patriots. Coach Grandstaff has been to the state tournament more times in the last 7/8 years than any other program in that county boys or girls. Plus they compete in the toughest AAA region/Sectional in Tennessee. Way to go !!!!! Too bad the school/community dont recognize good basketball.
  11. Again, may I ask.. What was the last school from Murfreesboro to make the state tournament in basketball ?? I know all about their football success. However. for the last 5 or 6 years all we hear is how good Mboro basketball is? When was the last time a school from Murfreesboro made it to the state tournament???

  12. ;) Some good posts on this topic, but lets get the facts straight about the players, past and present. Central had 5 seniors last year, three starters and two off the bench. Central has two seniors this year, Gray and Tony Richard. A solid Junior class and the Sophmores were undefeated last year as freshmen. They were the best freshmen class at central in 6/7 years. Columbia should still be very good by post season.
  13. I think English had a better season than Bratton and should got MVP and Griffin sholud of been Pitcher of the Year! English got robbed. Anyone who hits .500 is a Mvp in my book! Good Luck English!!!!!!
