  1. "ok" is about the only dang thing u can say bc u know its the truth. with over 400 passing yards u cant tell me ooltewah shouldnt of won tonight. if any of the refs are reading this right now...u most def stole an important win from the owls tonight. i hope u feel proud of ur self, ur a world changer.

It wasn't the refs and this is coming from an Ooltewah fan. Sure they made some bad calls, but the made bad calls both ways tonight. I don't think that should have been pass interference on the play that Wilkes picked off Morgans pass on the trick play. Ooltewah did enough to beat themselves. They didn't need the refs help.

They got beat by a very good Smyrna football team.

  2. I want to bring up something that has not been brought up yet. On that 3 and goal for Smyrna when Sonny threw to Wilks for his 3rd touchdown, Ooltewah played him in single coverage! Before the play was snapped I called it, "Sonny is gonna pass to Rod" It was so obvious. Didn't anyone else notice that before the ball was snapped?

I called that too. Don't know why they wouldn't run it. Single coverage, and the guy on hit was half a foot shorter than Rod. Only film I have watched were those highlight films yall' put on here and they ran it twice in that. Knew it was coming, don't know why they coaches didn't. But the again see my post above about that.

  3. No - 45 came in untouched, your QB (a great one by the way! Fun to watch) didn't have a chance. He actually try to turn away and was almost hit from behind but Day got there too quick and hit him flush. I was surprised he held on to the ball. The third down sack, he just literally fell down trying to escape 45 again. (45, Day, had 14 tackles against us last week, including some big ones on a goal-line stand and a key third down late in the game) - I got their at 4:45 and had a great seat on the home side at the 45 yard line or so at the top of the bleachers next to the pressbox  I told everyone to GET THERE EARLY

You had a chance at the field goal when it was second and 2. Going backwards two straight plays hurt....

Yeah you say that now. But who thinks to kick a field goal with 45 seconds to go and second down inside the 20. Why not go for it and try to with the game? Exactly what we did and Smyrna just put together some big plays with a slip up (literally) by Woods.

The play I remember is going for it on fourth down at about the 20 in the first half and not converting. A field goal there would have been huge. But thats why the coaches coach and we don't, and thats why it is so much fun.

Easy to say what you would have done if you were at there. I have seen many good coaches fromt he stands. haha. I think I am one of them.

  4. I want to take up for that kid on the late hit call..it was NOT a cheap shot...the ball was on the ground next to sonny so he may have thought and it could have been a fumble but i wanted to take up for that kid on that play

I thought that might have been what could have happend but from the Ooltewah side you couldn't see the ball on the ground. But it did look like he was diving in to recover a fumble but the play had been over for a couple seconds. I could easily see from my point of view where the refs make that call. Thanks for clearing that up though.

Any one have just an excellent view of the Ooltewah fumble out of the back of the endzone?

  5. good game by both teams....Ootlewah got a break on that fumble but wasnt in a hurry to call plays they should have 3 plays already called that way all they had to do was run it....My buddy Mr. Limbaugh was right when ootlewah called their last time out they should have kicked the feild goal in case they got tackeled or didnt get the first down well the worst thing happened he got sacked if they kick the feild goal there the game still goes on also i thought there was another time he should have brought the FG unit on in the 4th QTR..it was like 4th and 10 about the 25 yard line..nobody really stopped anybody tonight it is just like the score said...a shootout big plays EVERYWHERE both sides the biggest play to me...was the strip o fthe ball and it going out of the back of the endzone that was HUGE and the difference in the game

This was a good knock down drag out fight it was a good football game and i will be there saturday night rooting on the dawgs my father in law is on cloud 9 right now i think it will be 2 in the morning before he goes to bed LOL 40years with the school and they are finally going to state CONGRATS SMYRNA NOW GO WIN IT THEN DO ALL YOUR SMACK TALKING ON DEC 3RD AFTER YOU WIN STATE

On the last drive Ooltewah got into field goal range, but it was only second down so they obviously were going to try to get closer. Then comes a roll out slip and fall by Woods which puts you back to the Smyrna 27, which is a 44 yarder. Then they had to call a timeout after that play which was a killer. Not really in Ooltewah's kickers range. He did hit a 45 yarder earlier this year, but he had a little wind and I don't think he would have hit the 44 judging he barely got the 35 yarder through. And it would be tough to put the game on the line on third down with a freshman kicker. Then Smyrna just made the big play calling a blitz at the right time. Nothing you can do about that.

  6. I just want to say that this was a great football game. One of the best high school football games I have witnessed. Ooltewah got beat by a football team who was better tonight. Ooltewah had plenty of chances to win this football game but they shot themselves in the foot one to many times. Hats off to Smyrna. Some might say that the refs effected the ball game but I don't really believe so. Maybe a couple of questionable calls, but both teams got a few of those. Smyrna has a great football team and I hope they go on to win it all.

For Smyrna I felt like Wilkes was just another level tonight. I know some people have said he has been quite throughout the playoffs but tonight he found a weak Ooltewah secondary to breakout against. He had his way with the football tonight. Grey just had a tremendous game and really looked good controlling things for Smyrna. I was really surprised with the Smyrna O-Line and the running backs, I thought the line did a good job of getting protection. Great coaching and film work by Smyrna too, because all night they ran those 5 and 7 yard hitch routes that I think has killed Ooltewah all year. There defense was very good to and especially stepped up at the end of the game, thought they had some great blitz packages.

For Ooltewah, they had plenty of chances to win this game. Second drive of the game the late hit call and the pass interference in the endzone. Which I thought were both good calls, I saw both of them. Then the huge play before the half. And of course the strip of the Ooltewah guy near the endzone where it rolls out of the back. I personally didn't think there was any way that ball went 10 yards and through endzone, but you can't dispute that. I thought Morgan and Woods and Marshall had a great game for Ooltewah. Defese looked great in the second half but couldn't make enough stops in the first. I thought it basically came down to what I said at the start of this post.... If Smyrna comes out throwing the ball alot Ooltewah would be in trouble cause their secondary is weak, and thats what got them beat tonight.

    Great Game all around.

    Great season Owls.

    Good Luck next week Smyrna!!

  7. First half stats:

    Ooltewah:

    Rushing -- 68

    Passing -- 57

    Total Offense -- 125

    Smyrna:

    Rushing -- 111

    Passing -- 69

    Total Offense -- 180

Smyrna controlled time of possession and a couple of big plays and special teams play a big role in the first half.

    Second Half--Third Quarter

Ooltewah kicks it off to the five and Smyrna runs it back to the 28 yard line--first and ten. On the first play Harris runs the ball for 7 yards to the 35. Then lightening strikes as Gray hooks up with Wilks for a 65 yard touchdown pass. Smyrna tries to go for two, but the pass is incomplete. The score is now Smyrna 19 -- Ooltewah 14. Smyrna has now compile 260 yards to Ooltewah's 125. Not looking very good for the Owl faithful.

Ooltewah gets the ball on their own twenty to start the next drive. Woods drops back and hits Norwood for a 17 yard gainer to the 37 yard line. Buchanan is stopped for a two yard gain, and then Marshall breaks one all the way to the Bulldog 22. A screen pass to Marshall gets the ball to the Smyrna 9--first and goal. On the next play, the Smyrna defense steps up as Shadrake sacks Woods at the 16--loss of 7. Draw play to Marshall nets 10 yards--3rd down at the six. The next pass is incomplete and Ooltewah elects to kick the field goal.

    Score: Smyrna 19 -- Ooltewah 17

Smyrna again starts at its own 20. Harris gets 7; Hendrix gets 12; Gray scrambles for another 13. The ball is now on the Ooltewah 48 and the third quarter ends.

    Fourth Quarter:

On the first play from scrimmage, the Owls Swafford intercepts a Gray pass intended for Crouch at the 40 yard line and he is immediately tackled.

The Bulldogs bend but don't break defense, gives up two 10 yard runs by Marshall and a twelve yard pass pay from Woods to Jensen. Then Marshall gets 18 more yards but fumbles at the ten and Smyrna gets the ball back.

Smyrna, starting on its own ten, is unable to move the ball and has to punt from its own 14. Ooltewah lets it roll to its own 39 where they take the ball over.

Marshall is handed the ball twice, once for 7 yards and the second for 9. First and ten on the Smyrna 45 yard line. Woods connects with Jensen for 15 more yards. First and ten on the 30 yard line. Another screen pass to Marshall nets nine yards to the 21 yard line. Buchanan gets two yards for a first and ten at the 19. Woods drops back and passes to Shumaker; the ball goes through his hands and Wilks intercepts the ball. He runs the ball all the way back to the Ooltewah 16, where he is caught by Woods. Smyrna's ball first and ten.

Smyrna is able to move the ball to the 11, but after an incompletion decides to kick their third field goal of the night. It is good--a 28 yarder. Smyrna 22 -- Ooltewah 17. Two minutes and 47 seconds left in the game.

With their backs against the wall, the Owls are forced to start at their own 20 yard line again after the ball rolls into the end zone.

On the first play from scrimmage, another screen pass too Marshall nets 22 yards to the 42 yard line--out of bounds. A draw to Marshall gets 15 more yards down to the Smyrna 43. Woods drops back to pass; it's incomplete. Now just 1:50 left on the clock. Woods drops back and has to run from a furious pass rush and connects with Norwood at the 25 yard line--first down Ooltewah out of bounds. 1:38 left on the clock. The next play is a handoff to Marshall, who only gets two yards. The clock is running--Woods drops back to pass and hits Jensen for 15 yards down to the Smyrna 8. 49 seconds on the clock. Woods pass to Horsch is incomplete. 41 seconds remaining. Woods catches Shumaker open on a slant--touchdown. Ooltewah decides to go for two. Senior Shawn Sanders runs the ball for two.

Score: Ooltewah 25 -- Smyrna 22 (35 seconds on the clock)

Ooltewah's kickoff does not make it into the end zone and it is run all the way back to the Ooltewah 42 yard line, after several missed tackles and a great block by Shadrake. (21 seconds on the clock)

Gray hooks up with Wilks down the sideline for 29 yards to the Ooltewah 19 (8 seconds left on the clock. Smyrna elects to attempt a game tying field goal from 36 yards out. It's up; it's long enough; it's wide left. Owls win.

    Final: Ooltewah 25 -- Smyrna 22.

    Final stats:

    Ooltewah:

    Rushing: 195 (Marshall -- 183 yards)

    Passing: 183

    Total Yards: 378

    Smyrna:

    Rushing: 134 (Harris 100)

    Passing: 163

    Total Yards: 297

You have way to much time on your hands. I like it though. I think it will be..

    Ooltewah 34

    Smyrna 21

And now I am off to Smyrna.. See you in hours..

  8. Yes they were last year... I mean its so hard to explain how good he is but when you see him in person you will understand... He has a CANNON very smart and he can run.. So the D line better wrap him up if they get a chance because he can outrun all of them.. How is your QB this year what year?

Sonny looks like he has good speed from his highlight films.. but I highly doubt that he can outrun all of them (talking about the D-line for Ooltewah). One of our defensive lineman is also our deepman on kick returns and took one back 87 yards against Farragut, and probably a couple of the others in that front 7 could be too if they wanted too. So that shows you what kind of speed Ooltewah has up front. Sonny does have good speed, but I highly doubt he will outrun Ooltewah up front and especially from the ends.

  9. so obviously smyrna is a better rushing team than ooltewah. passing ooltewah is better. so should be a good game

I'm not seeing that. It easy to tell that Woods has been alot more effective in the Playoffs than Sonny has. Those stats are easy to see the difference.

I am not sure how you can say that Smyrna has a better rushing game though? The might have more yards per carry but that is it. Ooltewah's offense looks stout.

The funny thing is though that everyone is talking about Ooltewah rushing offense, which Smyrna actually averages better yards per carry than, and Smyrna's pass offense, which Ooltewah has way better numbers.

    Very Interesting!!

  10. any chance you are a ooltaweh fan because u have them #2 and Smyrna #9 and Riverdale #5(whom smyrna just beat). Morristown West???? Dude your crazy

Yes I am an Ooltewah fan. So if you want to say that makes me biased by putting them #2 then so be it. Thats the way I think things falls. I realize that Smyrna just Riverdale but I still believe that Riverdale is a much better football team than Smyrna. Which would be why I have them at #5. Sure sure, I know you just beat them 9-7 and their season is over, but the won 49-0 the first time and I feel like if Riverdale and Smyrna played 10 times... Riverdale would when at least 8 of those games. And yes Morristown West? Have you seen them play? They are a very good football team that is undefeated and will lose their first game this Friday.

  11. This is a good point of West vs. Middle vs. East.

I was curios to see how the numbers broke down though so I looked it up. The representation of regions (W,M,E) for teams that made the state championship finals for all classes is as follows. I'll also admit that I did the best I could to identify if a team was W, M or E. I used Chattanooga and east as E and the W line was a little hazy, but I generally drew it a little east of Jackson. I could have done it by tssaa regions (1,2,3, etc), but I didn't feel like looking into it that much :D

    1995 - 2005

    W - 52

    M - 68

    E - 36

    2000 - 2005

    W - 34

    M - 37

    E - 23

However, I would disagree with multiplying east or west times 2 to equal middle. I think it would actually be more like 1.5. If this were the case the breakdown would look like this:

    1995 - 2005

    W - 52 * 1.5 = 78

    M - 68

    E - 36 * 1.5 = 54

    2000 - 2005

    W - 34 * 1.5 = 51

    M - 37

    E - 23 * 1.5 = 34.5

If this were the case it would be W, M and E in that order for the past 5 and 10 yrs, which to me is suprising that W has been so successful so quitely (at least to me it seems). However, if I recall correctly from tallying the numbers alot of the west is from smaller D2 classifications, which I don't keep up with much. But, take that for what it's worth.

Maybe I'll break it down by classification one day and see how it looks...

Great post and great research.. But what I was reffering to was simply 5A football.. Not the rest of the classifications.

  12. Smyrna Fans,

Before we forget, everyone was picking Riverdale to beat us last week. Go ahead, let them pick Ooltewah over us...But the game still has to be played. That's why they sell tickets.

Just play hard and you'll see the results of your hard work Smyrna. Don't get frustrated by arm chair quarterback predicters.

    Coach Gonyea

    Smyrna Hightransparentdog.gif

    Smyrna Fans are picking Smyrna..

    Ooltewah Fans are picking Ooltewah..

    Whats wrong with that??

  13. 4 interceptions shows a lot of accuracy I will admit to being wrong on that. If he passes that good and throws it over 10 times this game, it could be a very close game.

Some games he throws 15-20 times some games he throws 6 or 7. It all depends on the score of the game and how well Marshall is running the ball. But most of the time Ooltewah just pounds it with Marshall.

However I think they are most dangerous when Ooltewah goes to their spread offense with 4 Wide Recievers and just Marshall in the backfield with Woods. It allows Woods to make alot of passes and makes the defense respect the throwing ability of Ooltewah but thins the opposing defense up front and allows Marshall to get to the corners and sidelines easier (where is the most dangerous).

  14. Well this is my analysis after hearing a bit about the Owls and talking to some of the players this week. Smyrna is very focused on the Owls, they are over the Riverdale win, the only thing that I am some-what worried about is the fact that they have never really had any experiance against the Owls. However, film should have disected the ways of there offense in a way. In my opinion the best way to stop a "Balanced Offense" Is to play it straight up Cover 2. Have your stunts ready and your cornerback blitzes ready. If Smyrna gets pressure in the backfield and makes the QB make some bad decisions (Like I have heard he does) and force the run it could make this game somewhat of a "Field Possesion" game. The run defense for the Owls is pretty good, I expect to see a lot of HALF BACK DRAWS to get the owls in some man-to-man coverage and Throw to Rod and Jesse (if he is ready to play) And or Josh Crouch. Doing that would allow some points to be put on the board. Like I said last game against Riverdale, SPECIAL TEAMS will be very important. Kick-off coverage and also Extra Points and Field goals. Look for Smyrna to put up early field goals over risks to see if Hosford (SP?) Can hit them tonight. Maybe this will finally be Rod. Wilks game to show-case his talent to more scouts to prove he isnt just a regular season WR/PR/KR. Good luck to both teams. I think Smyrna's big hits on defense rattle the YOUNG Owls and put them in a shell-shocked position and pull off the "upset" as some people are saying so.

24-14 Smyrna Wins in a close one, closer than the score, that is!

Looks like a pretty good analysis to me. Looks like you understand and know what you are talking about. However I will disagree with one thing. You said that they need to force Ooltewah's QB Jeremy Woods into make bad decisions.. ( Like you heard he does). I am not sure where you heard this from or who told you this but I have not seen this quarterback make hardly any bad decisions all year. Maybe 1 or 2 but that is outstanding considering he has played 13 games. He has only thrown 4 INTs this year. He is probably one of the best and most cool quarterbacks I have seen in a long time under pressure. He always seems to get away from the pressure and keep his head down field picking up big plays with his feet or arm. When he starts to escape the pressure you better hope that the Smyrna defenders don't think about leaving there man to come stop him on the run because he will burn with the pass, but you better find someone to keep him from running under pressure.

Great analysis though, look forward to seeing how it all plays out on Friday.
