1. well i hope some people are happy...AMAZING how a letter sent out with the statement of all students in stead of zoned students has resulted in these actions...but thats ok we are RIVERDALE and we will bounce back from this...the sad part is...the only people this really hurts are the kids who do not start or play alot...summer and spring practices is where those kids have a chance to really show the coach what she can do and now they have lost that opportunity...I hope that the powers that be that brought all this on are pleased...and i guess we have now opened a can of worms in this county that many hasnt opened before so for those throwing stones watch out because the glass house is about to be open

Just to show future LADY WARRIORS the facilities kinda like an open house

What is AMAZING is how these fliers reached the hands of "non-zoned" students in mass enough quantity to cause trouble???

I have to STRONGLY disagree that "the powers that be" brought all of this on. CM has been involved in other situations which SHE brought on due to poor decision making, therefore placing herself in the spotlight of the TSSAA watchdogs. When you are in a position of power (teacher, coach, administrator) you have to CONSTANTLY be mindful of the rules, and whether or not your actions can be easily misconstrued into the breaking of said rules. I personally find this "open house" thing a questionable judgement call for whoever planned it and those that went along, I have never heard of any such thing. I always thought that the games WERE the open house in themselves, kids that are zoned to Riverdale who play sports will get their open house when they reach high school. What need is there to convince young players who are already supposed "Future Lady Warriors" that Riverdale is great and good when they are going to be going there anyways due to zoning? That whole thing sounds like a joke to me, bad idea, face it. Riverdale man you made a good point, but it only further implicates, if the kid doesn't want to play basketball they aren't going to have an interest in seeing the locker room, training room, or any other room having to do with sports. This implies that those interested were saught out by the coaches etc, which is the problem here. Maybe it would have been different had ALL of the zoned middle school TEAMS been invited to a particular game( This I have heard of). Evidently it was more individualized than that, hence the infraction. Honestly waaay back when I was in junior high, I wanted to play basketball for my high school already, seeing the locker room or not wouldn't have changed that because I already wanted to play...

On the other hand, it is too bad that the players under this umbrella of leadership will suffer based on not one, but several bad judgement calls. Best of luck to the team in the future. Remember, CHARACTER is what you do when no one is watching..... /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

  2. You can believe that things have gone FARTHER than south with Warren county girls team. The board should have perked up a LONG time ago when petitions and such were passed around. The coach's(if you can call her a coach) record speaks for itself. I KNOW for FACT that things are REDICULOUS in this program and I look forward to the day that this woman and her entourage is OUSTED! /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" I am not a parent, or a player, my playing days are long past, I am an outsider with the inside track and I would never have played for this woman. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" Pioneerparent: I hope your young player gets the coach she deserves.

  3. um...yeah. I was on that team...and I can tell ya that at least half of us had shin splints before we even started practicing. We had to run that thing like everyday for the two weeks leading up to the race in town...it stunk..I woulda much rather been doin some wind sprints or somethin

  4. QUOTE(chs4life @ Feb 21 2007 - 12:44 PM) 826382916It's Trussler. She likes to help but she said she's busy with her business and her husband's. She is a great person but does not want to coach, she is enjoying life. Plus she just likes being on the radio with me.(haha)

    keep her, she's dang good!

  5. QUOTE(eyeonu @ Feb 15 2007 - 05:35 PM) 826373424Great topic.

This topic looks far more indepth at basketball rather than just another thread of this girl is better than that girl or this team is better than that team.

Mental toughness is instilled by coaches. Some players have it regardless because it's instilled by parents.

Coaches that win and garner respect (by giving respect) create team players who want to win regardless of what it takes.

The Jackson Countys of the world have it. It's why they overachieve and get more out of less talent that other programs are able to do. It's why Jackson County won four straight titles. JC didn't have the most talent in the state all of those years, but they did have a bigger will to win than anybody else. They still have it to some extent. I don't know if Jim Brown teaches it, but her certainly instills it in some fashion (maybe just by his conduct, interaction and communication) with his players. I'm sure he has confidence in his girls too, which helps a player when he/she knows that his/her coaches believes in them.

Lots of good programs have a measure of it, but the best programs have a greater portion of it. They can reverse the momentum of a game simply by their will to win.

I am going to have to agree with eyeonyou here, I definately think good coaches can harvest mental toughness in their players, I don't necessarily know if you could say, have a team meeting to teach it, but I think it can be instilled, either by coaches, parents, maybe other players, or other outside people or events. I also think #12fan makes a very valid point. The power of the mind can be big. I have known of many coaches who have tried to make their players understand, and successfully, that your body can do much much more than you think it can, you just have to be able to cross that threshold when your body says "no more", or when you are tired, you have to be able to over ride that, the bad part is the way that most coaches teach this is not too pretty( those ten extra sprints after you think you can't do more) but that's just the way it has to be done, mental toughness breeds physical toughness, therefore like eyeonyou said getting more out of less talent.

    Great topic

  6. QUOTE(sports24 @ Feb 16 2007 - 07:50 PM) 826375102

Yes, it's a shame when some coaches go to the extreme because they don't want to "single out" any particular player. Maybe it's their "team" philosophy, but I think it's a motivating factor for some players to perhaps be recognized for special honors at the end of the season.

I also think coaches should be as loyal to their players as they expect players to be to them. By promoting players accomplishments they promote the whole team (and it makes the coach look good, too)

Too many coaches try to promote one player as the team...instead of the way you mentioned...You are exactly right tough

  7. That all seems very well put together, I only have two points in reply to that post.

1: Not all of the players you mentioned even played at the next level, if you contend that by working and shooting on your own makes you better than your teammates it would seem to me that at least of the 7 players you mentioned, all would have played some type of college basketball, that strikes me as quite an oddity. granted extra time makes you better, but why didn't it make all of these girls more talented enough to play at the next level??

2: From Bates to K. Thompson you cover about a ten year span, how is it that you are so confident that only 7 players out of ten years worth of teams went to the gym on their own? Were you with all members of the team at all times for ten years??

I will agree that not a single "whole team" went the extra mile like our 93 girls did.

finally what exactly is it that CC gave you a start in? I'm lost

***Truly I am editing this post because I've decided it pretty much doesn't matter, for the most part we are going to have to agree to disagree, you obviously have a strong opinion about this, and so do I, so let's keep it cool and everything, I enjoyed the discussion, and feel free to reply to the above any way you wish, but I don't want this to turn ugly( like I read over in the Guys forum, thats a shame), I respect everybody's opinion, even if I don't like it. Enjoy watching post season play, thanks for supporting Coffee!

  8. So because we didnt score 100 we played bad? we still won by 40, if it was 40 to 0 would we be dogged cause we opnly scored 40? They can bring 100 players they still cant hang with our jv. We had senior night and and our coach even put in the paper that tullahoma would stay with uas the first quarter cause our girls would still be emotional. TOTAL DOMINATION no matter how many horrible player tullahoma brings. END OF STORY

    That's uncalled for. :thumb:

  9. QUOTE(bear1 @ Feb 16 2007 - 09:32 AM) 826374333

I agree, but before you get down on the league's coaches, better make sure Coffee's coach nominated her! He has a knack for not nominating his own players, if you remember! Ridiculous but true!

YES INDEED bear1, I seem to recall him not nominating his players a FEW TIMES...that's a darn shame, and people wonder why he gets no respect....HE GIVES NONE!

  10. Exaclty dontusee, so our high school team isn't any good because of their middle school programs?? Didn't Elam play under Joel Vincent at Westwood? He won many many games, and turned out some of Coffee's better players, although some were from County as well. You said it right Fuzby, they have been physically dominated or they haven't developed the needed skills, but who's job is it to teach them what they need to do? Isn't that why we pay coaches?? just because they may be "behind" does that mean a coaches responsibility to teach them is over? And also if I recalled when Elam and Page's class entered high school a few of them saw some pretty good minutes for freshmen, so to say that they are coming in unprepared to become good players is rediculous. It's called PASSING THE BUCK. The thing you have to think about is this: they may not be coming in to shoot on their own or whatever, but it's possible that they are no longer motivated by Scroggins' NONSENSICAL coaching and all of this "system" crap....It's PROVEN by the less than desirable record that Coffee has achieved over the past few years since he has been there. There is plenty talent, and regardless of how good or bad they are when they enter high school, if a coach is good enough they can make any player that will, improve. Sorry Fuzby once again I don't agree. Yes ladynred, I think the system needs to be tuned...TUNED OUT, it's old, we hired a bad coach, I wish the administration would admit that.

  11. QUOTE(PHargis @ Feb 11 2007 - 11:26 PM) 826368191

I have seen Columbia play and have seen this coach operate and while I hope she is for Columbia for a long time, you are very lucky to have her and if she wants to, she is destined for something higher IMO. She used to have an asst coach who I am unsure is still there that was in the same situation. Whoever found these two and how they got them to coach on the same team was first a salesperson and secondly a great evaluation of coaching talent. Columbia is fortunate.

    Indeed

  12. QUOTE(fuzby @ Feb 9 2007 - 10:52 AM) 826364964

I understand where you are coming from. It is a lot easier said than done. The desire is not there. You try to get todays high school player into the gym morning , noon, and night & not just CC but just about every high school would have a hard time fielding a team. There are too many other things outside of hoops that the average high school athlete (yes, boys & girls) are too concerned with. many have jobs, transportation issues, classroom issues etc. Old school coaching approaches are going by way of the dinosaur. Parents hardly ever complained to administration about coaching policies in the 70's - 80's. Now every little thing is scrutinized like amount of time practicing, etc. & administrations have been bowing to individual pressures. Coaches don't want to have to be called in to the principal everytime a Momma calls school complaining that daughter is in the gym night & day & still doesn't start. The most successful teams today have God-given talent, size, & a few of those special gym rats. I haven't seen that at CC (any many other Dist. 8-3A schools other than shelbyville) If the players don't enter HS with decent skills & ability, a coach can't use practice time in season working on basic fundamentals (opposite hand, help side, pivots) & still try to put in a game plan in the 1& 1/2 to 2 hour practice time. Oh yeah weights too. Just being a realist. I still support the team 110%.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but when momma calls that's where your principals and AD have to help you. And coaches have to be just as willing as the players to get them in the gym. We all know how much time and effort great coaches put in. It's very important that coaches don't use practice time to work on fundamentals. That's where you have to have your players get into the gym more, if they don't want to, then they will either get over it or quit. If they can't come because they don't have a ride..go get them. It's been done, it's being done. Also most coaches would see that 1 and a half hours is usually plenty if you don't waste time. But I do agree with you to some extent. I also still support our team, but it doesn't mean I agree with everything that's being done, or not being done.

    True.

However, Donaldson, and the players they had that year know for a FACT that they were not the best in the state that year.

    Well we got the banner!

  13. QUOTE(85warrior @ Feb 9 2007 - 01:50 PM) 826365193

White Co. made it to the state. They were put out in the 1st round{biggest upset ever]. I would say White Co. gave CC fits. White beat

CC by 31 points 9 days before CC won state. CC may have the banner but lots know who the best in the state was that year.

He's a heck of a recruiter. I'll give him that.

Hey I hate to tell ya...but you said the magic words..CC brought the banner home...so by all fair measures...they were the best tennessee team in 93 AAA basketball

  14. I agree 5A she has the abiltiy to shoot the lights out. But teaching to shoot with confidence takes more than a coach just telling you to shoot. Shooting with confidence means you get a good shot selection through offense, and also practicing good shot selection. And above all taking MANY shots throughout the season, even on your own time.

  15. QUOTE(fuzby @ Feb 8 2007 - 09:03 PM) 826364348

You amaze me 8675309...I don't think Coach Scroggins has anything to do with what you claim is a mess. Possibly 4 coaches, 4 principals, 4 AD's in the last 11 years has much to do with it. Coffee County girls havent been blessed with the entire combination of basketball talent, athleticism, size, & desire since the '93 state champs. Yes, here & there you had a glimpse but it takes more than 1 player to compete in 8-3A. Crabtree had some hard luck her last season; Benjamin getting hurt & having to face D-1 loaded state champ Shelbyville 4 times. The 5 teams that Scroggins has coached, possibly 3 girls had the desire to play at the next level, & the other ones, all great girls & with fair to decent ability but not enough to break the 3rd-5th place gray zone of the district. The girls don't play AAU, b-ball doesn't rule their lives like it does in more successful programs. Many girls are also multi-sport & play hoops because they like the game. You may not agree at all with this but that is okay. I'm just stating the facts. I would say any of CCHS's past coaches all are teachers of the game & fierce competitors too. Ask me how I know...

Amaze? that's a new one.. Hey that's a good respectful post about your opinion, no offense taken, however, it is also my opinion that good coaches make good players. As much as I disagreed with Coach Donaldsons personality this one thing is the truth, she didn't have many juniors and seniors sitting on the bench with underclassmen getting their court time, reason being, she either made you a player or you would end up quitting. If you have girls with lack of talent. Get them in the gym, morning noon and night, and if they want it, they will learn, if they don't they will go home. As far as being a multisport athlete, I would encourage it. Basketball doesn't have to "rule your life" for you to be good at it. The great Leslie Henley Trussler herself went on to be a four year track star at UT, yet she put it all out there for basketball too. It's all about the athlete. Some girls want to play more than one sport some don't. On the other hand, just playing because you " like the game" doesn't get the job done. That's not what high school teams become successful for. You have to LOVE the game, and have a strong desire to get the job done, even if it takes time and sweat. Doesn't matter if you play one sport or 3. Whatever is in season you have to give it all you have. Do I think that Scroggins is not competitive? OF COURSE NOT. I know for a fact the he is EXTREMELY competitive, but does that make him a good coach? Unfortunately not. That is only one of the many qualities a good coach should have. But at any rate, he is the coach right now, and I cheer on our girls no matter who is on the bench with them.

  16. You never know what talents will arise or change from season to season. I think that with certain management changes Coffee County could produce more than two great players next year, and greatly improve upon the two already mentioned. I think the grade 11 and under talents will also remain forces next year, that is ,God forbid, as long as none of them are injured. And I think the younger teams will only get better in the next few years

  17. Both are excellent coaches, however from what I have seen if I had a girl on the court, I would choose crabtree and not wild. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in wilds coaching abilities, however he tends to lean a little more on the negative side when he repremands his players in public. Yelling is one thing, personal attacks are another...just an opinion, nothing personal
