  1. Before anyone start ranking the wrestlers in this region, a few questions needs to be answered.

    1. Will Maplewood wrestle a complete schedule?

    2. Can TSB and DCA fill a roster and compete as separate teams?

    3. Did Cane Ridge get any good sophmores from Antioch?

    4. Will Thomas Holman and Roy Watts return to the mat for McGavock?

    5. And if so, at what weights?

But since these questions can't be answered until the season starts, I will give my picks.

    1. East Lit (they have to strongest returning team)

    2. Glencliff (only because they look better on paper)

    3. Antioch (always tough. lost five good seniors from last years team)

    4. Hunters Lane (they look good, will not be surprised if they finish top 2)

    5. McGavock (if there top guys return, they can make it hard for #3 & #4)

    6. Maplewood (if they wrestle a complete schedule, they have enough raw athletic talent to beat the lower tier teams)

    7. MLK (not strong, but if they get enough athletes to coop from Pearl-Cohn they could move a notch or two)

    8. Cane Ridge (young, but they shouldn't be ignored.)

    9. Hume Fogg

    10. DCA

    11. TSB

    12. Whites Creek

    13. Pearl-Cohn (coop w/MLK)

    14. Stratford (coop w/East Lit)

  2. can you name them?

    07/08 wt

    103 Ridley

    119 Aguilar

    125 Cuffman

    130 Jones

    145 Adafe

    152 Hinkle

    160 Gamble

    189 Ferguson

    215 Garrett

    285 Moore

    possibles:

112 Aguilar (103, but wrestled 112 in duals)

    140 Garrett ????

  3. Top A/AA teams

    1. Hixson (returns alot. they will be tough to beat)

    2. East Literature (returns 10 possibly 12 starters from team that finished 3rd the past two years)

    3. Greenback (solid program, everybody love the "Nation", but lost to East Lit. twice last year)

    4. Seymour (good team, but not strong enough to win state)

    5. Harpeth (returns alot wrestlers, could be a sleeper)

    6. Notre Dame (good team, but not enough to make back to the finals)

    7. Lipscomb (young, will make it to state but not contend)

  4. No, not saying "compete" just that if I were putting together the top 10 for D1 and MBA were a participating school, I would have to give them serious consideration. After I posted, a friend called and reminded me of Ooltewah...no slight was intended. The other schools you mention are all goo, not sure how many returning wrestlers, etc. MBA had a good team last year and it appears will have as many as 8 seniors in their starting lineup. Bellett, Simpson, Floyd, Todd, Jarrell and many others...its a pretty strong lineup.

No skin in this game, but MBA has a good team and deserves more respect. I would favor them over all but the best few in D1, but that's just my opinion having a DII focus.

LOL...I like the troll comment. Actually, spoke with Maj the other day after posting, so doubt he is too offended.

are all "good", missed the "d" and it changed the meaning.

East Lit beat MBA at the MBA duals last year and they have at least 10 starters returning. MBA maybe better than last year, but there are alot of D1 schools that are stronger.

  5. Sequatchie is improving right now but there is no way if they win this game they are going to the semis. East Lit has a freshmen at QB and some other kids starting that are new to the field. Sequatchie should win this game but they will have to play better then they did last week.

East Lit is a new and young team overall, but none of their starters or top backups are new to the field. Their freshmen players are coming off a team that only lost 1 game in the city championship. 5 of their defensive starters, started for Stratford (They were not as bad as their record indicated) including an all metro selection DL/LB and a DB who would had been Stratfords two top defensive returners this year. So, East Lit is a new program and most of their team maybe young, but they are not inexperience.

If Sequatchie wins this game they will have beat a good varsity team and if they lose then they will have lost to a good and well coached varsity team.

  6. He cannot go to another metro school and be eligible next year. Only a hardship would allow him to become eligible for his senior year next year. Last time I checked, "Stupid" was not grounds for a hardship with the TSSAA. I am sure he thinks he can still wrestle at East Lit. I really don't think that will happen. It sounds like he has two problems; he is unable to control his emotions and he is not very smart. The wrestling program at East Lit has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years. This means that someone will come in and replace this young man, and he will will not be missed.

He could still be eligible if he went to his zoned school without needing a special transfer. But, I dont think he will transfer from East Lit. He just wont wrestle.

  7. He cannot go to another metro school and be eligible next year. Only a hardship would allow him to become eligible for his senior year next year. There will be definate consequences for his action. His wrestling career is over and I agree that he will not be missed at all. His parents were embarrassed as well as his coaches. East Lit has several other good wrestlers that hopefully next year will be medal winners.

  8. For the final results of the Region 7 tournament click this link- Region 7 Results. Thank you to all of those who helped this tournament run smoothly. A special thanks to Scott Davis for managing the tournament for Mat Control. For those who are interested, you can also see the final results for Region 6 and 9 at Mat Control. Go to MAT CONTROL to find the link.

It was a busy weekend for us managing 3 region tournaments and the Nashville Middle School City tournament. I have great people who help me out running these tournaments when I cannot be there. I was at a Youth Convention in Nashville with my Youth Group from church with 2000 other middle and high school youth. Good luck to all who are competing at the state tournament!

Brad, your website has Jones (MLK) 3rd at 135. Lett (ELM) won that match. Looking at the State brackets, it appears that they have Lett as the 4th place finisher instead of Jones.

  9. Looking at the projected seeds, the seeding meeting will be real interesting. I'll start with 119, How would Ashmun be considered #1, I think he has beaten Williams of Glencliff(not sure), but the big 3 in this weight class are Rucker, Lillard, and Aguilar. Who's #1????? Rucker is the returning region champ at 119, Aguilar won region at 112 last season, Lillard def. Rucker. My projections:

    #1 Lillard

    #2 Rucker

    #3 Ashmun

    #4 Aguilar

    #5 Willams

I say this b/c Ashmun has been at 119 all season.

135, Lett has best record, Steiner has second best-buuut Osaitille is returning champ at same weight, projected seed #1-Osaitille, #2 Lett, #3 Steiner

145 will be an interesting weight class

Mintlow, Chandler(thought he was at 140), Jones(thought he was at a lower weight), Hussein(should have stayed at 140), somebody will be at home this year, all good wrestlers.

152 will be a mystery as well- Hinkle beat Burnley, Burnley beat Tresner, Tresner beat Hinkle. Who gets top seed? I think it comes down to common opponents, Tresner will get top nod b/c Burnley lost to Snyder of HF. Clemons could play a role in this weight class, but he has not defeated any of the top 3, and I don't see it happening this weekend

Once brackets are out, we can really make predictions on state qualifiers.

I think every bracket will be interesting:

at 119, if Lillard is #1 and Rucker is #2 based on head to head, then #3 has to be Aguilar. Ashmun may have a good record, but if he has not beaten any of the top 3, then he is a #4 or #5.

at 135 (the toughest weight five returning state qualifiers, but only 3 will make it this year.), I think all the coaches will agree on Osaitille #1. I think Lett is #2 and Steiner #3 because the only tournament they competed together at, Lett finished higher beating the guy Steiner lost too. I know non-region common opponents does not count, but that is the only comparison I can think of between these two. Also, Lett is returning runnerup at same weight and Steiner was runnerup at a lower weight.

    at 145, semi-finals will be good. #1 Mintlow, #4 Hussein, #2 Jones, #3 Chandler.

at 152, I think Tresner is #1, Hinkle is #2 and Burnley #3. Clemons will be a factor at #4, but he has not shown me anything this year.

at 189, I think Smith (HL) moving down was a good move. He matches up better against Ferguson (ELM) than he did against Pegram (GL).

at 285, this weight is always a coin toss. Any one of these guys can be champion on a good day.

  10. yea but lett is one of the top guys in the state right now so wat would u say about him

I think Cliff Lett would do better againse David Grahm; not because Cliff is a better wrestler, but because his style of wrestling. Scott Osatille will give Cliff a very tough match and will win if one or two thing are not corrected from last year. Everything will be settled Saturday.

  11. Congrats to Antioch and East Lit. Antioch one win from placing is impressive. East Lit. 3rd place finish is huge (bigger than last year) because nobody outside of Nashville gave them a chance.

After everyone finishes beating each other up this weekend. Maybe Region 7's top individuals can go to Chattanooga and really make some noise.

Good luck to everyone at Regions.

  12. well, they are really the only ones that have been trying to drop weight.. as far as i know.. region 7 seems to be loaded as far as im concerned.. and nick burnley i heard got disqualified in a match.. and he has to be out 2 matches.. which means 2 matches in the region.. which puts him out of the tourney

Nick Burnley had to miss the sectional and one other match date and I believe MLK had one scheduled this week and maybe one next week. So, I think he will be eligible for regions.

  13. Pegram lost E.J. Smith (Hunters Lane) early in the season, but has since beaten him at least two times. Pegram also won a close match again Nicholas Garrett (East Lit.). That might have something to do with Pegram not being ranked, because although both of these kids are tough competitors, they are not considered tough outside of region 7. So, even if Pegram is not ranked in the top six during the season, I think he will be in the top six at the end of the State tournament.

  14. Let's be real, you know we would have bumped up any way. We would have given Reams the 6, gave the decision at 215, and Rhodes would have pinned Clemons at Hwt(that is nothing new). Then we wouldn't have had to go to the tiebreaker. Anyone know the time of the match on Sat? Tullohoma is tough, but I think the 'Cliff will join the Bears in Clarksville. Also, anyone know when E. Lit and MLK will have their duals.

Good luck to Glencliff. I think they will beat Tullahoma.

The A/AA Sectional is tonight at FRA. Starts at 5pm ???

    Lipscomb vs. MLK

    East Lit. vs. FRA

Then the winners wrestle and the losers wrestle.

  15. wow.. that seems like a good match.. wasnt garret's shoulder already hurt before the tournament? and your right.. if garret went 145 it would make for best match potential.. they are both strong and physical

It would have been the best match of the tournament if they had finished it. Yes, Garrett's should was injured before the tournament (MBA Duals). He will miss a big match today against Clarksville and Harpeth and maybe thursday against MLK.

Feel free to add names to weight classes. I tried, don't shoot the messenger.

Kyle Chandler supposed to have dropped to 140. That should make it even tougher.

  17. I KNOW MJ BEAT LEB. AND WH . THEY WERE WRESTLING EL WHEN I LEFT.

East Lit beat White House; not sure of the score but White house only won 1 match

    East Lit beat Lebanon 78-0

East Lit beat Mt. Juliet 43-21

Mt. Juliet was tough. If this is a down year for them, they won't be down for long.

  18. I like Justin Cash alot, but I would have to go with Ryan Konz in this one. I saw them wrestle in the off season and Ryan won the match but what I like the most about Ryan is that he beat Justin on his feet, which is something I have not seen anybody do to Justin (even the kid that beat Justin in the State semis could not take him down, but I saw Ryan Konz do it and made it look easy).

  19. Bucq:

There was no reason for rasslinlite to post the response he did to my post about the 145 matches at the MBA Duals..........I hate those kind of posts. I understand your need to defend Garrett, but there is likewise no need for your post about the Sohr kid. You just stooped to the level of rasslinlite's comment.

I'm sure Shawn would like a rematch with both kids. According to the East Lit coach I spoke with at the MBA Duals, East Lit won't be at the Father Ryan tournament this year so you are right, we are not likely to see one with Marchetti. As for the Sohr match, I was at the scorer's table for several of the contests and was the official scorer for the FRA/East Lit match. From what I saw---and put down in the book--- here is how that match went: First period, Garrett took Sohr down, Garrett led 2-0 at end of period; Second period, Sohr's choice, Sohr deferred, Garrett took neutral, Sohr took Garrett down, 2-2; out of bounds, injury timeout Garrett; wrestling continues; near fall Sohr, 5-2; reversal Garrett; 4-5; escape Sohr and Sohr awarded penalty point, 7-4; very short injury timeout Garrett; East Lit elects not to continue. Garrett was later standing in front of the scorer's table with ice on his left shoulder, so I assumed that was the injury that led to his default. So if the first injury timeout was the shoulder, the score was 2-2 at the time. Sohr scored 5 points after that, but Garrett scored 2 right after the near fall with a reversal off the bottom himself. So it was not like the shoulder was preventing Shawn from wrestling as your post implies and that without it Sohr not have come within 5 points lasted the match with Garrett as you posted. That is a disservice to a very good match that the Sohr kid , and for that matter, Garrett, were wrestling. From the scorer's table it looked like it was going to be one of the better individual matches of the day. The team score was 36-12 at the time, with only 4 weights left, one of which FRA was forfeiting, so East Lit already had the win. My guess is that the East Lit coaches decided there was no need to risk something permanent happening to their best wrestler in a match that was already over.

I understand what you are saying about the comments. I was not trying to disrespect or take anything away from Mr. Sohr, he was leading when the match ended so he won and nobody can take that from him. Garrett did hurt his shoulder the first injury timeout and should have defaulted then when he told the trainer he could not lift his arm. I dont think his coaches believed he was hurt until they saw that he was using his left arm at all when wrestling resumed. As for the within 5 points comment, no disrespect to Sohr, but that is just how I see the outcome of a rematch. The two wrestlers, when they wrestle again can prove me right or wrong. I think Sohr is a good kid and a good wrestler and I wish him the best for the rest of the season, but as you can tell from my comment I will be going with Garrett in a rematch.

  20. Any results from the MBA Duals. How did E. Lit. do???????

    East Lit went 3-1

    beat MBA 40-30???

got destroyed by Father Ryan 54-12

beat Tullahoma 42-32 (not sure about this score)

beat FRA (about a 20 point margin)

Father Ryan beat everyone 3-0 (Ryan and MBA didn't wrestle)

    MBA 1-2

    Tullahoma 2-2

    FRA 0-4

Everyone from 103-145 wrestled up. East Lit's backup 103 only weighs 86lb but wrestled with the heart of a giant. If everyone was on weight, well............they still would have lost to Father Ryan, but would have beat the other teams by a larger margin.
