1. What I find most interesting is that of ALL the games that got suspended, or postponed on Friday night week 1.  This is the only one that did not get completed.  Stop making excuses and put you money where your mouth is. :thumb:

Wasn't the Adamsville-McNairy game called and not scheduled to be completed? Rather, it was considered a complete game with McNairy determined to be the winner.

I'm merely asking, and not making a statement about how any of the games were handled. Just curious as to anyone's opinion or knowledge about the similarities of the two situations.

  2. A lot of great movies mentioned here.

I can't rank any one over the other, b/c I like them all, so I'll just list some of my favorites.

    -- Hoosiers

    -- Friday Night Lights

    -- The Sandlot

    -- Major League

    -- Rudy

    -- Rocky I

    -- Miracle

    -- 61*

    -- Caddyshack

    -- Eight Men Out

    -- The Natural

-- Dead Solid Perfect (good HBO movie from the 1980s with Randy Quaid and a very hot chick who later played Joey's "Basketeer" girlfriend in one episode of Friends. In fact, I think Tin Cup is somewhat of a take-off of this movie.)

-- Bad News Bears In Breaking Training (for some reason, I just love it. But, I'm not really a fan of the other two. Don't ask me why. I can't figure it out either. I haven't seen the BNB remake with Billy Bob Thornton yet.)

-- The Longest Yard (both are good, but I like the original a little more)

and, I'll mention two Costner movies, even though I think he takes himself too seriously, which tends to slip into his acting ...

    -- Field of Dreams

    -- Tin Cup

  3. Well, the forward pass for starters. It was legalized and modernized in the early 1900s when the game's high fatality rate almost led to Teddy Roosevelt shutting down the game. The college game was popular from the get-go and increased its appeal every year because of the pagentry and campus electricity generated. .... The sport is a perfect mix of sheer brutality and detailed strategy. .... It took off with a boom with the mass appeal of television in the 1950s and -- surprising as it might seem -- the old AFL's ability to use television to its ultimate advantage (unlike baseball, which did virtually nothing about the medium as it caused the demise of small-town Minor League teams all across the country). ... The game looks good on TV, which turned millions of people to the game.

    Anyway, something like that maybe.

  4. Here's a thought for those of you with shelters in your town. If there are people there, try to get 'em to go with you to a game this Friday night (pay their way). It'll be a good couple hours for 'em to forget about what's going on. I don't really know if the Red Cross would let you, but it's just something that crossed my mind.

    825735377

I think that's a good idea. .... Every little thing helps, even if it is nothing more than giving a victim something else to do and think about for a few hours. ... Also, if anyone does lose their hotel reservation to a victim for any upcoming weekend, please don't gripe or complain. Instead, if you had made a desposit to reserve the room, ask the hotel to donate it to the family who is using your reserved room or to the nearest Red Cross or shelter. ... Finally, I know that nearly every high school is strapped for money in its athletic budget, but this would be a good time for a season-long fundraising effort. Say, a dollar from every ticket sold, 50 cents from every program sold, a small percentage of the concession gate, could go to Katrina relief funds. It would be good if the TSSAA could suspend, for one year, some of the percentage of gate money it gets from its member schools. .... Some of these ideas, or similar ideas, may have already been proposed and being implemented. Let's hope so, and let's all pray for everyone affected by Katrina (which, according to my rough count, is approximately 300 million Americans and millions more Latin Americans).

  5. Well, I don't want this to sound negative toward my ol' alma mater, but when everyone speaks of UC's experience and games against good competition, you all need to make note of two very important facts:

(1.) There is such a thing as bad experience. UC is 5-17 dating back to the 2002 playoff loss and has lost 11 straight at home.

(2.) UC has played tough competition and lost. All you get from that is mounting losses.

Go back and look at Union City since the 2003 season opener. They miss tackles, they don't hold on to the ball, they make mistakes at critical times.

I want Union City to win, but, crap, they have to prove they can win before I'll believe they will win.

Who knows, though, this could be the turning point game for the whole program. I sure hope so. Two-plus years of this is long enough for a program that was within seconds and inches of two 2A state championships in the very recent past.

  6. Well, this board has deteriorated into personal attacks and name-calling. .... JJ, you don't know enough about me or my background to throw around those types of comments. You should have more class than that.

So, I will sign off on this board by, once again, asking you two questions. (If you had read MY posts, you would have seen them).

(1.) Why weren't you posting prior to the game, sharing your vast knowledge by telling everyone that Kilbourne was not a big deal and that a win by Riverdale would not mean very much in the long run?

(2.) If the Riverdale win was nothing special, then why are you wasting your time posting?

  7. Do they teach reading comprehension in Tennessee?

Ok, who had 57 posts and four pages in the office pool before the first northern comment alluding to stupid southerners??

A little undignified and disrespectful, IMO.

In case you're wondering, we have shoes, indoor plumbing and paved roads, and very few of our buildings still have dirt floors. .... If you can't do any better than that, take it somewhere else.

  8. I would consider myself someone who is fairly knowledgable about Ohio DI statewide. In any case, I would have put Kilbourne in the 15-20 category in Ohio's DI for the preseason and still do after week 1.  All divisions considered, they wouldn't be in the top 20.

    825732195

I knew a high school administrator who had to interview candidates for a coaching job in his community. One of the people to be interviewed was a local citizen. Nice guy, but kind of a goober. ... Well, he had to be interviewed, so he was.

One of the questions asked of him was what coaching experience did he have. His answer was that he watched pro games on TV every Sunday and charted the mistakes.

My point is this: Anyone can claim he's an expert. Some actually are, but most only think they are. ... JJ, I am sure you are one of the top experts on Ohio high school football, but that means absolutely nothing to me or anyone else here. ... The fact of the matter is that you and others from up there are all of a sudden putting down Riverdale for its win. Why weren't you posting prior to the game, sharing your vast knowledge by telling everyone that Kilbourne was not a big deal and that a win by Riverdale would not mean very much in the long run? If the Riverdale win was nothing special, then why are you wasting your time posting?

Every fan loves it when a team from his state beats a team from another state. It brings out all of that "Our state is better than yours" talk.

I'm located about 200 miles on the interstate and a million miles in terms of talent from Riverdale, but I was as happy about the win as I would have been as a Riverdale alumnus. .... We're gonna have a little fun with this win and then move on with our lives. You should, too.

  9. It wasn't the players fault, but the coach should of never called that play. It is called victory formation, that is what Hoover should of ran. You can justify it all you want, but the sportsmanlike thing to do would of been to run victory formation.

    825729793

Well, I'm not gonna get into an argument over it, b/c it's not worth it. .... The kid who scored the TD might never have a bigger athletic moment in his life. ... As for the coach, all he did was send in a simple inside handoff play to a bunch of back-ups near midfield in the game's final seconds. ... The sportsmanlike thing to do would have been for Nease to make a tackle. .... By the way: Sportsmanship on Hoover's part was displayed on the game's final play when a Hoover player intercepted a pass, ran a few yards to make sure he was clear of the goalline and then took a knee. He could have kept on running, trying for a 99-yard TD, but he didn't.

Anyway, it was a fun high school football game to watch, and let's leave it at that. Hopefully, ESPN and Fox will have more occasion to televise top prep athletic events.

  10. Bottom line is that Nease couldn't stop Hoover's backup fullback from making about a 40-yard run. .... You can't put subs into the game, kids who work all week in practice basically as whipping boys for the starters, and then say "don't score and don't even try."

I thought ESPN did a good job with the broadcast. They treated it like they would a college game, with sideline reporting, graphics, interesting side stories and fairly good play-by-play and commentary. ... I thought Donnan made a strong and good statement when he said that high school football was the winner today. Good for him.

I also agree with the post about ESPN doing more games like this. They actually had the opportunity for a great doubleheader b/c Texas studs Southlake Carroll and Midland Lee are playing later this afternoon, but its not on anywhere. There is a high school game out of Pittsburgh on one of the Fox stations right now. .... But, hey, ESPN has all of that poker and X-Games stuff to broadcast. They ought to save that junk for Cheap Seats on Classic. :P

Anyway, ESPN or ESPN 2 will likely rerun the game after midnight sometime in the next few days. ... Keep this board open and everyone who watches should give their opinion on how Tennessee's best would stack up against the two teams. ... We already know how Riverdale stacked up against one of Ohio's best. thumb

  11. Hey rigger .... I guess the only way to get that respect will be to go 15-0, win ANOTHER state title and finished ranked in the nation's Top 10. ... Well, I guess that'll have to do. :(

Its a good thing Kilbourne doesn't play Tenn. schools more often. They would probably fall off the national radar screen.

  12. It was a really hard hitting 1st half and I think the coaches were concerned about coming back tommorow being sore and stiff and risking injury.

Yes, it is called John Wade Tucker Fieldhouse

    825728971

Good point. ... The injury and fatigue factors should be taken into consideration. ... Maybe they'll finish it on Monday night. It would cut into Week 2 preparation and practice, but it's still something that can be done.

And, excellent and obvious choice for the fieldhouse name. .... With the job Morris is doing, maybe they'll need to add onto the building and call it the "Jeff Morris Wing"

And, finally, to Crockett County fans. .... I've been there many times, and I should already know the answer but for some reason do not: Tell me the story behind the naming of your fieldhouse.

  13. that stinks...5K is the american way. i think they should reconsider...

    825698850

kilometers is NOT the American way. Just more of that metric crap which we shot down in the 1970s :(

But seriously, it seems to me that if everyone else around Tennessee runs 5K and colleges use that for recruiting, then we need to make the switch for the sake of out athletes.

(I hope everyone takes my little joke in the way it was meant and doesn't get offended.)

  14. what happened to halls qb?

    825726088

As I understand it, he suffered a pretty bad broken leg in some sort of accident. Don't know if it was football-related or not .... But, he's done for the season but they hope to have him back for baseball in the spring.

Some Halls fans on here might have more info.

  15. They have to wait until Monday?? They can't just hitch it up and start 'er up at High Noon on Sat.?? ... Oh well. Maybe they'll settle it on the field sometime.

Good luck to both teams. I respect both programs and like both Pratt and Morris. Good class guys and programs.

By the way .... is it named "John Tucker Fieldhouse" ??? :(

  16. This is a huge in for Riverdale, and this also had to be one of the premier match-ups in the nation for this weekend.

SPARQ magazine (formerly Student Sports) had Kilbourne ranked No. 15 in the Midwest Region -- Ill., Ind., Iowa, Ky., Mich., Minn., ND and SD, Ohio and Wis. .... Riverdale was ranked No. 16 in the Southeast Region.

Must have been a grea game for Riverdale!

  17. VolunteerGeneral' date='Aug 15 2005 - 06:55 PM']Coacht....is it ok for plus members to make their picks on Saturdays?

Thanks VG (who wouldn`t dare look at scores from friday night before picking)

    825717007

Yeah, neither would I. :) ... I would be completely honest about picking the day after. Just a hunch, but I'd probably be in first place and undefeated on Monday morning. :)

By the way, I made my picks yesterday. .... Drag down to the bottom of the standings on Monday, and I'll probably be there.

  18. Lions4ever ... when did you play a Camden? That other guy said he played 1980-84.

I have no dog in the hunt, but the discussion got me curious.

I hope to see everyone at the jamboree tonight, and save a cheer for my nephew, Obion Central's #74
