  1. Brentwood had 7 lay-ups in the first half. That's not good. Panthers will regroup at the half! Go Panthers!
  2. Great job Lady Panthers. Good luck at state!
  3. Great job coaches and players! You played with a higher intenisty, pushed the ball down the court and the guards drove the ball to the basket to get those inside shot. You looked fabulous tonight! Go Powell! Beat Heritage!
  4. I would like to give my opinion. First, when Sevier County applies the press - Powell should try to throw a couple of full court passes to try to get a couple of layups. Oak Ridge was pressing Powell with 4 girls in backcourt (I.e., it was 4 OR players pressing 3 Powell players much of the game with 2 powell posts over the centerline) and the long pass was available. Trying some full court passes will spread the press out and make it less effective. Once the press is spread out, Terra Michael will have an easier time beating the press with her dribble. Second, when Powell does break the press, they should be aggressive and take advantage. Powell must make Sevier County pay for applying the press. Powell tends to want to setup a play every time they cross half court. When Powell has numbers they should be aggressive. Third, Powell should let the guard's shoot when they're open and send the big girls to the boards. Powell makes too many turnovers making too many passes in the half-court. Let Michael and Cox shoot the 3's and get the big girls run the high-low passes to score inside 10 feet or score on rebounds. Erin Ogan is too good a player to be strictly a 3-point shooter - at 6 feet tall, she should be getting rebounds and scoring in the paint.
  5. John Wooden, Pat Summitt, Coach Prudden for examples all ensured/ensures their point guards to take charge and calll plays on their own. Look at Oak Ridge, last 4 years Angela Phillips was coached to run the offense. Who was waiting in the rears to take her place, Jennifer Hendricks (I think that's her name) without missing a beat. That's the coaching Powell lacks. I don't have a teaching certificate but maybe I should get one just in case a coaching job on the staff becomes available. I'm sure robpride and I would love to speed the game up for Powell and let the girls run and gun down the court. Are you up for it robpride?
  6. Coach K let the girls play and not worry about what plays to run. When coached properly, the point guard should be able to call the plays without having to be told by the coach (Did John Wooden call every single play from the bench?). In the last 2 OR games, Powell players have been impacted by "paralysis by analysis" (i.e., the girls are doing more thinking than hustling). Just let the girls play and have fun. Terra Michael is the quickest guard in East Tennessee, outside of Cait McMahan, but she is ineffective by Powell's coaches demand for slowing the tempo. Powell beat Oak Ridge at home by running and gunning, but got beat the last 2 meetings by slowing the pace. Look at the films
  7. Baselinetobaseline, I can't keep you straight, previously on a post I believe switchplay posted some stats about Powell, and YOU wanted to know who switchplay was since you were close to the coaching staff and knew for certain that the coaches did give that information to the players, even though it's in the News-Sentinel every week. Good try but I don't believe you're a player! All your previous posts aren’t player material. Only a COACH can dish out stats like you do! Again good try!
  8. baselinetobaseline, since you know so many stats about Powell, how many turnovers did Powell have and how many turnovers were due to Powell passing the ball laterally down the court during the press? Players get pretty frustrated on turnovers and all of a sudden their down by 15-20. Powell's players started feeling the pressure by being down and missed the easy shots they always make.
  9. I said Powell had won 1 out of 4 big games. I meant 1 out of 5!
  10. Oak Ridge played great ball! I don't mean to take away from OR girls at all. They had the confidence to win and they did. Almost anyone could coach Powell's team with it's talent and win all the big games. Three girls on the team have scored 1,000 points. (Renee Williams did tonight) and Caitlin Hollifield will probably break 1,000 by her junior year. Powell's girls were tired tonight. I agree with switchplay the other two girls on the bench should have played at least some time to give the other players a rest. DCCATVOICE if you were at the game tonight, did you really believe Powell's coaches had a good game plan by passing the ball slowly in a zone defense and would you honestly have the guards passing the ball laterally to beat a press? The ball was stolen numerous of times on that lateral pass. As said in posts before, Powell really hasn't played to many good teams, due to their district being weak this year. The big games they have played in this year are Oak Ridge (three times), Heritage, and a team from Georgia during a Christams tourney. Out of all 4 games, Powell has won 1. Powell always gets out coached in the big games.
  11. Oak Ridge did what they had to do to WIN! Powell on the other hand didn't have a good game plan. The Powell coaches haven't taught their girls how to beat a zone defense. The Powell guards would hold the ball for 3 or 4 seconds, look around, dribble three or four times and then pass the ball back to a guard. Powell coaches you better teach your girls to pass the ball around quickly during a zone defense, or you won't make it out of regions. Powell also hasn't improved on breaking the press. They let Oak Ridge's defense set-up before they ever threw the ball in. The play Powell plays to break the press is for 2 guards to pass the ball back and forth laterally until they get to half court, unless the ball is stolen beforehand. Powell beat Oak Ridge in January by Terra Michael running down the court breaking the press and dishing the ball off to one of the three big post. Powell's girl were even scared to shoot the ball. Powell's coaches should let the girls play ball and not worry about everytime down the court you run a play. There were several times Powell could have taken a good shot without running the play to the end, because running the play to the end sure wasn't working. They passed the ball around to much and had it stolen away. One good thing about the game was that Oak Ridge didn't get all the calls. In fact, they didn't get any! Powell keep you heads up and come to regions ready to win!
  12. Powell came out pressing Central (2-21) and won. Score 23-83. Powell beat Central at the last meeting 22-70. Oak Ridge beat Powell last week by three. Does that constitute pressing a weak team? Powell does need to practice their press, since it wasn't used/or executed by the players immediately when the ball was thrown in with less than 1:00 in the game and trailing Oak Ridge. Don't beat the other team so bad that the opponent's players loose the zest for the game, that's tacky!
  13. Knoxville's News-Sentinel states Hollifield is cleared to play the Oak Ridge game. Any comments on the outcome of the game since she'll play?
