  1. Gibson beats Peabody tonight.... So, if I'm thinking this through right, if Humboldt beats Union City, it will be Gibson/Union City in the tournament?

If Humboldt beats UC they will be 1, South Fulton 2, & UC 3. GC should be the 7 seed no matter how LC-Halls turns out because Halls swept GC & Bradford would have wins over both LC & Halls. That would put GC at SF for district quarters. Could be wrong but that's how I've evaluated tiebreakers.

  2. ... But you know they could win all three classes lol

Would have a shot a AA for sure, AAA is iffy. I agree with your earlier comment about Westview having a shot to get back to 'boro. Tough pre-Christmas schedule is paying dividends and role players are stepping up. Will have a tough one at Dyersburg tomorrow night but it should be a preview of district title game for February.

  3. I wasn't at the game but I was shocked at the score, I didn't think we could play that well with our injury to our guard. Last year against Union City we looked scared and look intimidated. I

heard today that Amber Fair was absent from the game from a suspension not an injury. Don't know that as a fact but heard that from a coach who should know. Gibson County should beat them right now in my opinion but if Union City can get their act together they are the better team.

Amber Fair is sitting out the 1st semester for academics. Union City played great defense the 1st half and really limited what Greenfield could do offensively. Greenfield pitched a shoutout in the 3rd quarter with a defensive adjustment and coupled with a little more relaxed offense made it tight in the 4th quarter. Union City missed some easy shots. They are physically superior to any Class A team locally but don't always put the pieces together. Greenfield misses Kalee Kesterson but others will pick up the slack, probably by committee. Don't know if they can replace her leadership as a senior.

  4. with all respect towards greenfield i dont think this will be as close as everybody thinks. We played halls tuesday and won 56-20 i believe and greenfield had them in overtime by 2 points. But the same team played a tough UC team and lost by only 7. Most definelty looking foward to the game but looking for a 10 point game. GC baby

Halls was without Ineasha Claybrook against Gibson Co. She is reportedly out once again for the season. Two years in a row. Very talented player who's had a tough time. Halls is nowhere near the same team without her.

  5. You misunderstood my post i believe. I was not trying to degrade you or any other sports writer but if my post came off like that i apologize. I understand what you are saying and appreciate the fact that you take an interest in all of Tennessee and not just your own back yard.

Thank you devilfanatic. Most of us really try our best. If you know 7Awatcher he knows me personally and can vouch for me. :)

  6.  I think the local press does a good job promoting JC and all the Upper Cumberland teams in general.  However as Bob77 stated we play a schedule that is very tough and one that would be hard to go undefeated with.  The voters like to see those 20-0 records about mid way through the season and 31-1 at the end of the season thats what impresses them, not the fact that you play an extremely tough schedule which in turn gets you ready for the tournament.  Most of them don't get that but in the end it doesn't matter in this sport as its all settled on the floor.

I'm not sure why I continue to try and explain the voting process on these message boards because most fans have their own ideas and that is the way it should be. However to constantly downgrade the knowledge of the sportswriters/broadcasters who make up the AP Poll voters gets old. When I referred to a lack of promotion earlier I wasn't talking about in the newspaper. We obviously can't see teams all across the state so we depend on information we share with one another to accurately gauge where teams should be ranked. We rarely get any input from voters in the Upper Cumberland about where their teams belong. This leads to ranking based more on records because that may be all the input we have.

Thus, I will reserve my judgments about teams until we begin networking.

  7. The polls mean nothing.  Jackson County has won 7 state championships and 3 Runner Up trophies over the last 13 years and i don't think they have ever been ranked #1 in the polls and they won't be ranked #1 this year either.  UC was ranked #1 all of last year and they got beat by 30 in the championship game against Jackson Co. so i wouldn't put alot of stock in them.

Can't believe JC has never been #1 in the poll but I can tell you one reason why they may not get as many votes as they should. Those of us who vote in the poll swap e-mails with information about the teams in our area and where they deserve to be ranked. Your area sportswriters need to promote the teams from the Upper Cumberland more. Yes, polls mean nothing except to create conversation and JC does their talking on the floor, but it's a shame when those of us in West Tennessee have to submit names for consideration from other parts of the state.

  8. That's great to know. I too hear good things about coach Angelos and I wish him the best and look forward to next season and expect HC to be very competitive in the district.

Quite often I hear quotes like "athletes walking the halls at HC", I assume meaning that are not playing basketball. Heard this for years, and last year someone said that Coach Greer (who I think is a very good coach and will be missed) could get those kids to play. I noticed ONE new guy that played last year that had not previously played - maybe I missed some others. He was a good player but not a game changer. So I wonder, where are all these athletes? Do they play football only? We have many football athletes, but I don't see many over 6 feet that would be potential basketball players. I don't want to sound like HC is void of athletes, we do have some, but to say there are lots of athletes walking the halls not playing basketball (that could contribute)??? I don't buy that, but we do have enough to compete.

The line about athletes in the halls wasn't a knock on Henry County, just saying Pete got a lot out of what he had at a small Class A in Greenfield. Could really thrive with a AAA enrollment.

  9. Have broadcast Pete's games at both Gleason and Greenfield. I dubbed him the "James Brown of High School Basketball." Just as the Godfather of Soul was the hardest working man in show business, Pete may be the hardest working man in prep coaching. He is up coaching from opening tap to closing horn, no matter what the score is. He never takes a possession off. His teams will be fundamentally sound on both ends. Give him the kind of athletes that I know are in the halls of HCHS and the Patriots will be very competitive.
