  1. All of District 1AA better be glad that the higher up's making the decisions who shouldn't be don't allow Greeneville to play where they belong which is in that Conference. Take all of GHS sports and put them in the following.

    AAA- Football

    AA- Every other sport

It would be a long year for alot of folks who play in those conferences. However don't worry because as I said the decision makers are to worried about keeping up with the big guys to let that happen. There happier with beating a DB Football team once every 32 years or making it to the state in basketball, wrestling, soccer instead of winning it.

  2. That is the most legitimate thing in this post. The intimidation factor is in full affect at the DW Dome. You not only have to worry about the rouge officials in this area but safety after the game is also a concern. The only thing I think is at question here is the margin of victory for the Indians which will be directly affected by which officials work this game. Say what you want but it??™s the truth. And DB fans have your pepper spray ready because you will need it to get to your cars and to get threw the unruly students congregating in the parking lot and outside the exit doors after the game taunting you. There is usually more action in the parking lot at Central than in the games??¦and that??™s not a joke! The best situation would be if DB runs the Cougars out the gym as predicted and the ???Circus??? start leaving before the game is over.

    Cap,

Give me some point spreads. It sounds like to me that the NBA Ref (Tim Donagy) is working this one by your statement. Addressing your last post about the kids learning the truth about their play whether good or bad is understandable. I just think it's the coaches responsibility to address this in practice and at games and others should try and refrain as much as possible and definately not go overboard on here in slamming them. Thats just my opinion and im sure others don't see it that way. Never the less good luck to your team as well as all the others tonight.

  3. No Cap not me. I take it you think I am a referee. Unfortunately I am not in that good of shape to be chasing those young men up and down the floor. I am just an old school guy who likes to watch good competition and not bad sportsmanship and dirty play. I go all the way back to the DB-North Rivalry of Tranbarger (vs) Granville Arnold or TN High (vs) Central who had Steve Crowder. I like to watch all of the good coaches past and present. East TN has been blessed with some great coaches over the years as well as some very good players. I think if I am not mistaken the top 3 winningest coaches in Tennessee are from here, 1) Van Huss 2) Bayless 3) Warren. I just like to see kids being praised and communities supporting their teams and not always slamming or trying to run down them. Most of these kids will play 4 years of basketball and move on. Alot of them will be asked 10 years later why don't you support your old school and most will say that the way it was when I was in school. At your next game count how many former Vikings are in the stands and get back with me.

  4. Hey Cap,

Just wandering why everyone up there is unhappy with the style of play at THS. This style has been going on for the past 20 years including the years they has Stallcup,King,Mitchell,Dandridge and the likes who where far more athletic than this years team. Not slamming this years team but are they not better suited for the walk up game instead of run-n-gun

  5. Olddoc all i can say is that was great lol. cap1 i hope witcher dont remeber that lol , but i see that you would want him too. good luck with all games.

Thanks Big 9, I just want to see kids rewarded and praised for their hard work. In todays world there is to much negativity and smack talk everywhere. These kids and coaches spend far more time working on basketball than a bunch of hide behind the screen wanabees. They deserve the full support form their communities and instead of 500 in the stands it should be 2500 like back in the 80's. All we do now days is make excuses and whine instead of being supportive and working hard. This has alot to do if you look at it why alot more foreighn kids are getting scholarships and pro contracts as they outwork us and don't make excuses.

  6. All is quiet in Big 9 Land. Any thoughts on tonights games?

Yes General it will go like this after tonights games.

    1) No one will give much credit to the winning team if any at all.

    2) They will say their team had a bad game or some starter would have been out of the game for whatever reason.

    3) We will hear how bad the coach was and he didn't substitute right or play the right people.

    4) The refs where horrible and it was all home cooking was the reason our team lost.

    5) There will be someone on here blasting some young athlete about his ability, character or something else.

    6) There will be some blow hard talking about how they could have done this better or that better.

If you read this whole forum that junk makes up about 90% of it. So for what its worth here are my suggestions.

If you are one of those people and you are a student do one of two things!

    1) Get off your lazy tush and go play for your school.

    2) Support your school with class and don't criticize, slam, or otherwise demean other players or teams.

If you are one of those people and are an adult this is for you!

    1) Act like an adult and grow up

    2) Go back to school where you can become the next Buck Van Huss

    3) Put on a referee shirt and walk the walk not whine and only talk the talk

    4) Remember out of all 9 teams there might be if your lucky 9 kids get to play some type of college basketball

For the other 10% I commend you on supporting your team and showing some class.

  7. The Cradic kid at Volunteer is a great competitor. No doubt has kept Volunteer in alot of basketball/football games the last couple of years. That leg whip deal sounds like out of character for him and should be dealt with accordingly. His ticket is punched though as he just received the Scott Niswonger scholarship which pays up to $40,000 per year to the school of his choice for 5 years so sports will probably be an afterthought for him as he also carries an extremely high GPA.

  8. One point you are leaving out is that Greeneville just like Besty might be a 3A but they do get alot of kids playing there that would go to your county schools normally. I will also add that the 1A team that beat Johnson County has a great shot to win the state and still hasnt been beat. They would no doubt be a playoff team in the 5 Rivers or MLC in my opinion this year. You also forgot that SH shutout West and got drilled by South and beaten by TH High. We will all see come Friday I am sure if any of this really means crap.

You are correct if Greeneville and Betsy didn't have tuition kids they would be 2A and then look out. As for Hampton they are strong. My point is if you look at the strength of schedule of every team in both conferences the 5 Rivers would be stronger based on who they played overall.

  9. Here is the following breakdown about each team

Greeneville- Beats South by 3, beats West by 7, Loses to Boone, Loses to 2A ky Defending State Champ

West- Loses to Greeneville by 7, Loses to Knox Catholic Ranked in top 5 3A state, Loses to Science Hill

South- Loses to Greeneville, Beats THS, Beast S Hill by 20

THS- Loses to South by 7, Beats S Hill by a couple

Looks like any of these 4 could move on to Maryville

Now as for the rest of both conferences as how good they are and also look at non-conference opponets

South and TN High have 3 schools in their conference who are 3A schools playing up so they definately have an advantage there.

Greeneville is also a 3A playing in a 4A so this could be seen as a disadvantage

    East beat Volunteer by 7

Johnson County got beat by a 1A school and played at least 1 2A School

Unicoi beats a week 2A school in South Greene and played another 2A in Happy Valley

TN Highs non conference was week with the exception of DB. Va High and 5A S Hill no playoff

Mo West played two 5A schools and a State top 5 3A school

Greeneville played the #1 team from MLC and a 5A playoff team and KY State Champ

South played Boone and Greeneville Non Conference

You talk about 2004 what about 2005 and 2006 as far as head to head in playoffs which did better.

  10. I first want to say that Maryville has an awesome program and has been tremendous over the past 8-10 years. I do however think it would be tougher to accomplish those things at 5A. Playing the likes of Oak Ridge, DB, Bearden, William Blount, Farragut, and a few more week in week out is a little stronger than some of the 4A teams they play. Also being at the top of the cut off # at 4A and being on the low end # of 5A is a world of difference. I am not cuting their program at all I am just saying it would be harder to duplicate the results.

  11. That athletic director wasn't complaining when his kid was starting point a few years back. The bottom line is and I am sure no one will agree but they don't have the talent they had when Pitts was here or for that matter the first couple of years of Poe. Other than Wattad you name me who could match up with the Williams boys, Johnson boys, Loves, Nookie, Fields, Goulds, Harmon, Stevens, Odarius,Sterbenz and I am sure I left a couple very good ones off. Need I say more the players now are just not there in groves like they once where. The other thing about the almighty press. 20 years ago when Pitts came he took very good athletes and changed high school basketball in East TN. Now every team tries to push the ball and the topper press doesn't produce 25 turnovers a game like it once did. Finally after 20 years other teams figured out how to break it. The last thing go speak to some old heads like Herb and Bart and the will tell you the kids today are not in Carver and Legion everytime you look around like they once where. All this put together adds up to they will always be better than most but another run like th 90's most likely won't be coming anytime soon. All this being said I am not saying the Coach is the greatest by no means but he by far isn't the only problem.

  12. Duncan is a very good coach. This years squad is very good but I don't think is is his best. The squad with Dabbs(Carson Newman), Story(Tusculum), Malone(UTC), Blair (Maryville), Gillespie (UTC football) was probably the best. He has put as many kids in college basketball the last few years as anyone in East TN if not more. Charlie Morgan is a good coach and demands alot from his players on and off the court, some kids don't respond to that well. Another good coach is John Dyer who always gets a great effort out his players and they play fundamentals , he just doesn't have the overall talent others have year in year out. As for Pitts he changed the way the game was played in East TN. In the late 80's early 90's he had some very good athletes and the pressure defense up tempo style was new to the area. Now in 2007 Everybody tries to push the ball and trap on the floor and SH is being caught by everyone else as they have had 20 years to catch up against the system.

  13. Another win tonight for Henry County. Northwest had a nice team. Athletic and aggressive would be two words to describe that team, but they didn't outwork us tonight especially in the second half. Two good ballteams! I wish I could say the same for the officiating! Tonight was a first for me. Our guard tries to draw a charge underneath Northwests basket. Official blows the whistle as the ball falls through the hoop. One ref calls it a blocking foul, one ref calls a charge. They converse and the first ref goes to the table and calls the charge. The other ref promptly goes to the table and calls it a blocking foul and counts the basket. They converse some more and then decide to call a jump ball and the possession arrow favors NW. So in one possession we get two fouls, a score, and Nwest gets the ball back. I'm not one hundred percent sure but I don't think that is in the rule book! If I'm wrong someone tell me!

Thought this might be of interest.

That is the rule . Both fouls are recorded and you go to the possession arrow.

  14. And if you take away Gash, Anderson, Woods, and about 8 or 9 other players Greeneville doesn't have a team. Maybe then Cherokee will have a chance.

Thats alright, the 6'3" freshman Quarles will do a bit of growing over the next year or so and that should give us some time to fish the local waters.

Glad to see a home grown player is going to be the man. I here he is a very good quality young player. As I said Greeneville has a good squad but you take away 25pts per game and then they fall in line with everyone else. Those teams you mentioned some are decent (Red Bank and Shelbyville) the others are weak this year Powell-lost almost everyone from 2006, Seveir-No 2006 Regional, Clinton- No 2006 Regional, Patterson Prep-About their 3rd team squad definately not the one that plays Oak Hill. Madison who. My point was that you ditched a few of the Hardee'e teams and I ditched some in the Land Air. Arby's will be loaded and once again no locals have a smell of the title.

  15. I hope you post wasn't comparing a win against Unicoi to a win against Bearden... or Bradley Central.

And, fortunately, Wiggins is part of the equation and he makes everybody play better...lucky us

My point was that other than those 2 teams mentioned Land Air Classic was as weak as Hardee's. As for Wiggins he is a great player and really helps their team but the well is running dry on recruits.

  16. How much longer has Coach C have. I here the locals are restless and want his head. Just like they where after Poe now their after him. The cold hard fact is they don't have the team that Pitts had in years past. The one big difference is the are softer they cant outrun and no points off the big press makes for a sub-par year. The other thing is Coach C always wants to worry about the referee's instead of what the true problems are and that comes from someone in the know. They got out hustled, out shot, out scrapped, and probably out coached in the District finals.
