  1. Not that Ramos is not a great coach but how would he do at a school with zoned boundries that had an enrollment of 1500 students? If he wants see how good he really is go to Memphil Melrose and see if he can be successful in Orange Mound!

Ramos announced his retirement to the Collins Hill wrestling program, ending a 34-year coaching career.

" He also wants to travel more and spend more time with his best friend Steve West, but more importantly focus on serving God.

“I don’t know how yet, but I can serve Him more,” Ramos said.

Ramos has certainly been blessed as a wrestling coach.

Ramos started his coaching career in Butler, Mo., in the late 70s, spent five years at East Hall and then spent eight years at Meadowcreek before taking over the Collins Hill program. During that span he collected more than 600 wins and 80 losses.

He built the Collins Hill program from scratch and turned it into the best program in the state. The Eagles have won five traditional state championships and four dual state titles and have finished in the top three at state the last 11 years.

The Eagles have produced 31 state champions and 111 state placers, most notably four-time state champion Tyler Parker.

“I’m so happy to do this in my career,” Ramos said. “There’s a lot of teachers and coaches that have regrets, but I don’t have any. I would do it all again.”

    it.”

cbg- pray to God and see if he answers your prayers! Sounds like Coach Ramos wants to serve God more :flower: He is a class act. I saw a footballcoach take over a program that had won 1 game in 12 years and turn it into a winner in his first season. Great Coaches are hard to find but can lead young men to do great things! :flower:

  2. I would like to complain about the referee at the Individuals. The MOST inept official I have ever seen.

Yes he did a poor job at the regions also.

rig you disappoint me in support of such a racist post.

reftn-notice there is nothing racist in my copy of the quote. I deleted that part of his post.

I served with and commanded lots of great Soldiers of every race. I always saw only Green! I tried to bring that same view to the civilian sector.

I may not and will not be politically correct but never raciest.;)

  3. As far as a homefiled advantage goes as I read in an earlier post. Thats hilarious! All the Chatt town coaches were ecstatic that their wrestlers would be in a hotel room where they could control what they eat, what they are doing, what time they go to bed, the fact that they would ride together to the tournament and not be out driving. As far as wrestling goes its much better to be out of town than in town without a doubt. Do you think Bradley county had rather their kids leave Utc everynight for the 45 minute drive home, worry about what they are doing and eating or be in a hotel room 10 minutes away from the arena?

You are the first person I have ever heard say this. I know for a fact, that in all the years I played sports through high school, and college. I never once thought that being on the road was ever any better. I have always felt that sleeping in my own bed was HUGE. Sleeping in a hotel room, with often 3 other guys. Sharing a bed with another person. None of this can ever help you perform.

Also, have never seen how a coach can control what a kid eats. They are in a hotel, and often eat what they want. To me, it's worse eating on the road then it will ever be eating at home. At least at home, you can eat your normal diet. On the road, I have seen kids do some silly things because they were out of their normal enviroment.

I agree! When the Grapplers were in Downtown Chattanooga in the motels there were plenty of temptations!

Maybe tnlonghorn's team puts 1 grappler per room. That’s not the way it works on most teams. When you have 3 to 4 per room and they are away from Mom and Dad young grapplers do not sleep well. They are excited with lots of distractions. If you stayed out of downtown then you were killing yourself on the 1st and 2nd night trying to find somewhere to eat before everything closed. I have seen many out of town grapplers end up at Waffle House/Taco Bell because everything else was closed near their hotel by the time the left the UTC campus. By the time they get served and eat they are hitting the sack around 11:30 and have to be back early the next day..

Maybe it was great this year around Franklin but not my experience in Chattanooga during State. So I'm glad "All the Chatt town coaches were ecstatic" however I can't say the same when I went with 2 different programs to state in Choo-Choo town.

    .

  4. Or maybe just paint circles and let them wrestle in skates? Seriously lets just go double elemination and forget UTC. They prefer men's basketball over TSSAA wrestling anyway...

I thought it was Women's Basketball that they kicked us to the curve for.:lol:

However I was disappointed in the media coverage. I did not see or hear anything talked about on the State being held in Franklin

I think most of the gripes can be corrected. I know the Vandy/KY game took a lot of sports news time and all the hype on Music City Miracle reunion, Sports fest downtown etc. What was going on in Chatt? I know listening to Wallie on the radio. There is always 2 or 3 major things going on in Nashville. I never heard about wrestling on the radio or TV. Someone should have called Vickie Yates on Ch 5. Her young men were grapplers. I tried to call sports talk and couldn't get through.

I think the Majority of folks love Chattanooga but hated the way the UTC's hired help made us feel. I'm sure someone in Chattanooga has fiqured how much $$$ was lost to their town. Does anyone know that amount? I know TN Tech fought for the Football State Championships and it seamed to work. Maybe UTC folks should do a Undercover Boss and find out how great their door Nazi's Operators work.

  5. Why was Henry (Cville)@160 DQ? I was watching the match then turned my head to look on another mat and didn't understand what happened.

Unless it was flagrant misconduct, or he injury defaulted, he earned 4 technical violations.

(I did that with my eyes closed).

Yes that's the book answer. I need the Paul Harvey version  .

  6. How about the mighty 103s from the region. 50% of the medals went to this region. Did I see that correctly? Man there is going to be some good wrestling coming from those kids in the future. The 119-135 wgt classes will get these young men in the future.

  7. Thanks Chuck, Ethan really came alive and peaked at the right time. I think Antonio is going to be a golfer, but time will tell. Whatever he decides i hope it allows me to share with him the same excitement and life lessons as wrestling has with the other 3.

Your welcome. It really has been fun watching 10 years of yoour young men on the mats. They all have big hearts and that's my kind of grapplers.

  8. You made it an exciting match. 95% of the Hvy Wgts will not shoot in this State. That put's you in the top 5% plus your the State Finalist. I'm sure cmmndalum would rather see two Hvys going at it then 2 big guys moving in a circle like to big bears waiting for the other one to shot then have 4 OTs. You did a great job young man. You are the 1st big guy I remember Greenback having to get to the finals.

BTW- Congrats to the Big Bear Allen. It's been fun watching you turn into a beast. I know it's been a lot of hard work. Congrats to the Allen family.

  9. 4. NO UTC Nazi Chicks at the door checking me and my family for dangerous food.

    5. Food price seemed fare.

    6. I felt like folks wanted us there. They didn't make the grapplers start their wrestling on Wed or check their bags to make sure the venue made a buck at the concessions.

That wasn't changed because of the venue. Quite a few fans made a rather aggressive pitch to some TSSAA officials about how ridiculous it was that wrestlers had to subside on $6 funnel cakes between matches because they weren't allowed to bring in their own food. And if you were spending $150 on food in one day then you need to rethink where you were eating. There was a McDonalds 3 minutes away. Just sayin

Between high hotel cost, being forced to eat in the round house and parking cost $150 was a low fiqure. You had to pay for parking every time you wanted to leave and return. A one day pass like this year would have made the out of town folks feel better about UTC parking. UTC had a great recket going and then made you feel like a 3rd class citizen!

The heart of TN wrestling is Chattanooga, however UTC was taking advantage of that IMHO. IMHO the changing of the Tourney to a Wed twice having kids miss school and parents missing 3 days of work and the folks working the doors being rude was enough to ask for change. I hope their Funnel Cakes and Food Nazi;s were worth the cash that Chattanooga lost this year.

I attended the State at UTC since the 90's. I always enjoyed the area and the city. Like the UTC campus. However the last 3 years I felt like the UTC folks could care less if we were there.

  10. I am so disgusted with the criminal organization that is known as the TSSAA. From what I understand, they didn't have to pay a cent to have this tourney at the Ag Expo, and yet they have the nerve to pay $5 PER DAY for parking and $10 PER DAY for admittance. To bring my family of 7 to watch our neighbor (and 3x champ) in the finals would have cost $75...$150 if we had wanted to see him pin his way to the finals the day before! No excuse for this type of thievery.

 You would have paid that much for just 1 day of parking and meals at UTC!

First Chattanooga is my fav city in TN. However, IMHO-the powers to be at that Venue had started to take the State Wrestling Championships for granted. This is what I liked.

    1. PARKING-Paying once for all day.

    2. Sleeping in my bed for a change.

    3. Price

    7. Large floor. Enough space to have double elimination. Something we have been screaming for years.

I know this is not an issue for D-II but it's sad to see hard working Grapplers who lose by a point or overtime not get a shot at a medal. On Friday night the D-II side was empting out about 7:30 pm.

That was plenty of time to get in additional matches for Double Elimination.

Heck D-II could be knocked out in 1 day. dry.gif

I do miss going to downtown Chattanooga after the matches. Best City in TN IMHO. Is their another venue in Chattanooga that could hold the State?

Seems like most of the negs are coming from D-II folks in Chattanooga. I'm sure the Father Ryan Folks had plenty of family coming in that couldn't always travel to Choo-Choo town.

The mat distance was a problem.

Nashville has Municipal Auditorium, Somet Center or MTSU as options. :flower:

  11. Been told that the following was discussed and proposed during the meeting this morning;

    small school individual state tournament

eliminate current format for state individual tournament- change to double elimination "Hallelujah"

allow non-qualifying team members to attend the state tournament free of charge

After watching all the DII side clear out about 7pm last night and the long break on Saturday they should go to a a DOUBLE ELIMINATION! Heck I'm for all 3 proposals.

D-II could be completed in one day.

Seeing the D-II clearing out at 7 and a lot of their brackets not full means it about the same or smaller then most Tourneys in the state.

  12. Congrats to Morrison (NW) for fighting his way into 3rd. I don't think he was picked to place. I thought he could make it to the finals. Enjoyed watching him against the MTJ Hvy at the H'ville Tourney.

    Great job!

Congrats to the rest of the group!

  13. Since we have gotten off the topic at which this thread first started I thought I would bring it back to focus.

The Refs at the tournament were absolutely horrible!! I have been with this sport for 30+ years and the championship round of this tournament was beyond horrible!!

Someone is going to come on here and tell me that since this is my first post I should shut up and not complain about the refs. Forget you! I have the right to speak my mind!!!

Someone is going to come on here and defend the refs. Forget you! This is why these refs have gotten the attitude of "BEING GOD"

Refs have to be accountable for their actions and if we do not have a place to voice our concerns then they will become gods in their own mind and at matches. They are not gods but yet mediators to the matches and rules.

I was at the matches and I did see how they determined the outcome of several of the championship matches by their calls. I also got to see first-hand at their arrogance at which they treated not only the coaches but also the parents of the wrestlers. I talked to several of the coaches and heard first-hand from them of how they over heard the refs "laughing at how stupid the coaches were acting."

It is not like people can complain and really honestly be heard and it would not matter since one of the people who was overheard making fun of the coaches was P.A. Bowler himself. If he was acting the way some of the coaches were talking about then how can there be any change??

Yes I meant to post that also. The refs getting on to a coach and then going over there a laughing. The region had some good refs that most of us know and respect. However there is 1 or 2 that need to find another job. I see someone knocking thier bald head off in the future if they act as sorry as they did during the Reg Tourney. Threating a parent when you let their child get hurt on the mat. Pleaseeee...................................... :D

  14. The last PD that rigger is referring too was NOT a PD it was in fact an ILLEGAL move. A wrestler cannot be mat returned from behind to the side of a trapped arm. It is illegal and should be stopped before it happens the first time and DEFINATLY THE SECOND TIME. This was the situation in the 130 conso semi match. The wrestler was mat returned to the side of a trapped arm twice in a five second span the first knocked him silly and the second knocked him clean out. He was wheeled out on a stretcher and backboard after this. A wrestler injury defaulting on an ILLEGAL move? Sounds like a wrestlers chances of going to state where wheeled out with him and the handbook.

No I was talking about the finals. I think it was a NW wrestler. I felt like NW grapplers in the finals were getting some bad calls and IMHO the refs were going after one of their coaches. Just an observation. I know refs have to control the match but IMHO a few of the refs were bullying from the mat. One of these refs seamed to fat to get down and call pins. If you can't move and keep up with the match it's time to find a new hobby or income maker.

  15. I have been involved with Tennessee wrestling for 11 years now and I have never had a more frustrating day at a wrestling tournament than this Saturday. I don’t post a lot of garbage on here I prefer to keep it simple. But not after today, I’m unsure where to start. Wrestling was delayed both days. 70 minutes on Friday and 50 minutes today. West Creek High school hired an outside company to come in and run there tournament. I would defiantly be asking for those 120 minutes back. The brackets where done wrong, period, just plain wrong. Second seeded wrestlers having matches while seventh seeds have byes. That is not how you run a wrestling tournament.

Well I have about 20 years in the sport and it was sad to see refs deciding championship matches by stalling calls in the final scds instead of grapplers deciding it on the mat. When a match is 1-1 and a grappler steps back to set up a move and there is scds left on the clock I don't think that’s stalling. I also saw something similar in a hwy wgt match earlier. Match decided by a ref, Match in overtime wrestler trying to escape and top wrestler keeping contact with him going out of bounds. Called for stalling. Coaches losing team points or threatened when they didn't agree with call. Bad really bad. :thumb: It seamed to be the same refs. It became a joke in the stands seeing how many times the same ref would cause a conflict during the match he was calling.

The Clarksville, Northwest, H'ville and a few other coaches were about to loose it. When one parent yelled "come on ref" during a late PD that injured his son, he was told " do you want to leave". I know the refs have a tough job and respect many in the sport. However, what I saw tonight made me sick. :thumb:

I have no dog in the hunt and the adults I was atanding by had no grapplers on the mats. They had the same feeling about the poor Officiating.

  16. Here's the larger question. What are the coaches who do this teaching the young men under their influence?

I had a coach tell me one time I should have done that to win a match but it was not in my nature and I really was injured. :thumb:

I think I only saw it once watching my sons teams over the years.

  17. Don't start that rumor. Two rounds tonight... then the rest tomorrow. They have to split it up to avoid the five matches in a day rule.

Sorry about that. When I went to the site it just showed Saturdays schedule. However it had Fri and Sat dates. Just didn't want to make the drive up there to find out I should have asked,

Does wrestling start at 3 or 5?
