  1. VG as usual an excellent post that concentrates on principals ignoring local politics whether racial or otherwise in hiring. Only strong men/women of character that can teach and coach should be hired. Noticing one's color should only be an after thought, when the man/woman is already hired.

Thanks nooney. This is a good topic that no doubt still influences sports and education today. My post was directed at Galilee, but let me add that I have a lot of respect for him. I`ve read his posts here and on other boards. I hope he feels inclined to respond. Not because I want to engage , but I want to hear his opinion.

  2. Hey guys new to the board. Been reading the last few years but never got on here. Looked up info after seeing patiot 04 found the above and found this link.

A small clip to wet your whistle. Shows a little of what this young man could do.

As my name states I believe to win a state championship you have to play defense. I disagree a little with JYD in that we will have running clocks every game. If we give up as many scores as we score then how will we have a running clock? We had a very nice offense last year and got into a shootout with Maplewood and came up a bit short. Defense wins championships! I'm looking for big things this year, but I am not ready to add bulletin board material for rival teams to use against our guys from old farts like us! Can't wait for the first game although it will probably be a hot one! Well copy the above link into address bar and it should work. Thanks for your time

    Welcome Old Fart.

    Thanks for the link and join the club. /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

  3. Well howdy stranger! Its been a while has it not?!?!? Pigskin time is here at last! Are you ready to do some tailgating this year - Smoky's Doghouse being defunct and all... /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Been good `cephus. Gonna try my best to get up to Paris for the game this year. Hope you have some good eats. /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" />

  4. WTNOFF,

How many Shelby County Schools besides Southwind(which will be a city school in the future) have black head coaches. I cant think of one, I maybe wrong. If not what is the diffrence between Shelby County, which has only 1 and Memphis which has some white head coaches.

Galilee. It`s time we move on. Kids today don`t care what color their coach is. They just want someone that can coach. Let`s kill this notion that black kids need black role models so therefore we must hire black coaches and teachers. That just doesn`t hold water. What black kids need and what white kids need are "good role models" as well as good teachers/coaches. I saw what happened last Spring on the news at your former school and without a doubt there were NO good role models at your school that night. Whoever the adults were at that school function failed at being a role model that night.

I have no doubt that there are very qualified black coaches out there that have a hard time getting that head coach position. But at the same time there are also very qualified white coaches that are in the same boat.

As I read your post I wonder what your point is???? Do you think county schools should hire more blacks or do you think city schools should hire more whites? It seems that you think county schools should hire more blacks. Lets take a look at two of the most promising coaches from the city schools. Tim Thompson and Lynn Lang. Are these role models for your grandkids?

Another case in point is JCM. Four years ago Jim Hardegree resigned a very goo program. The local NAACP said it`s time we hired a black coach in Jackson. Frankly I had no problem with that because I felt there were some good black coaches out there (Thompson and Lang aside). Here`s my point...their mission was to hire a black coach "just because". Instead of trying to hire "the best coach" they`re mission was to hire a black coach. And that they did. They hired a really good Christian man with values who was a bottom tier assistant coach from Dyersburg. JCM was so bent on their mission to hire a black coach "because Jackson needed a black coach" that they never even bothered to call Dyersburg to get a recommendation. The result 4 years later was JCM won 1 game last year and was "mercy ruled" half their games.

Honestly...these kids don`t care what color their coach is. I wish more schools would take a look at black coaches, but at the same time at no point should a school purposely hire a teacher just because of color.

Kids recognize leaders. They recognize non leaders. I know you weren`t there at the Mitchell school dance last Spring, but I`d love to hear your opinion on the leaders that were there. Do we want role models that give in to young kids or do we want role models that stand up and demand civility?

  5. On the defensive side of the ball they have Clayton Smith back as a junior linebacker. As a sophomore he recorded almost 100 tackles in 9 games. They expect big things from him.

Also all the linemen on both sides of the ball are bigger and stronger than in past years.

    Is that Griffin`s brother?

  6. Because of "bureaucracy?? No, it's because nobody wanted to work for Principal VSC. Her 2 male asst. Principals quit out of frustration this past spring(said they couldn't work with her)

. Numerous coaches turned the football job down. Principal VSC offered to a guy from Memphis who didn't have a teaching certificate (the central office had to intervene) Coach Hampton did great his first 2 years with support of the administration...then VSC comes along and...bang...the program goes south..did Coach Hampton get stupid overnight?? I think not. Mark my word..Coach Glover will be there ONE year.

Yes a lot of bureaucracy. The coach from Memphis was suppose to be receiving his certificate this spring and seemed very qualified.

Coach Hampton had the benefit his first two years of kids that were coached by hardegree for two and three years. In Hampton`s second year when they won the region championship that group of seniors had a large group of kids that were undefeated during their years at Tigrett and then went on to be undefeated when they comprised the freshman team at JCM. The next year they only win half their games. The seniors from that class had 3 years under Hampton. Everyone should have seen what was coming last year. That team was comprised of a full team that had only one coach during their high school years and that was Coach Hampton.

I certainly don`t hope you are blaming the poor play of the football team on Mrs. Crump. Coach Hardegree and Hampton were like night and day especially from an organizational standpoint.

  7. As I said on another thread, I hope you are right. But there is a lot of difference in shorts and pads. We will find out over the next few weeks. I will admit that he looked pretty good in shorts.

    I`ve been told I look good in shorts too. /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

  8. Thanx VG. We in Henry county are relieved and happy that this debacle has finally come to an end. We wish the team and new coach good luck and success ( with obvious exceptions)

Thanks. I`m happy too. It`s sad to have to wait this long because of the bureaucracy. Hopefully Coach Glover can get JCM back to at least being competitive this year. Winning only one game at JCM should have never, never happened last year. And to top that off they were mercy ruled in about half those games. I have no idea what we can expect from this years team but hopefully we can begin to turn it back around. JCM will be a 2A or 3A school after next year. Our low enrollment figures have not helped much against true 4A schools, but that still is no reason for such a poor showing the last two years.

  9. Never the less, it's still rather silly that Principal Crump twiddled her thumbs for SEVEN months before finally choosing a coach. She definately put the football players from JCM behind the 8 ball.

Let's hope that Principal Crump gives Glover time to work with this team. It's not going to be an over night rebuild.

It would have been great to have had a coach great months ago, but from what I hear about Glover he can get the rebuilding job done so I`m excited about that. It`s amazing (and sad) how fast the program fell in the last two years.

  10. My buddy lives in the apartments where they moved in at. How much more verification do you need?

    Seriously who cares???

If half of Memphis wanted to move to Munford`s zone what difference would it make? I have news for you...it`s a free country. What makes your post even more sillier is the fact that Memphis is a hotbed for kids changing zones. Kids from Memphis can pretty much pick the school they want to attend yet you for some reason want to imply Munford is cheating. Get real!

  11. That`s nice to hear it has been confirmed by media. I guess the report that ReitzFan heard was wrong. And by the way...JCM could actually be a 2A team next year. 3A is a given, but if you look at last years numbers JCM was at the very bottom of current 3A schools in terms of numbers. Any slight dip in numbers this year could very easily put them in 2A for the next 4 years.

I`m excited about having Glover on board. I don`t know how permanent it will be but I feel good that he will turn the ship back in the right direction.

    GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!

  12. First of all..what a great topic this is. As to the original list all those schools have very good traditions and its hard to argue their place on the list. But it does seem like it is Middle and East Tennessee biased. Only 4 teams listed west of the TN River. I`d add Haywood High School and also Jackson Central-Merry (especially if you consider the old Jackson High Golden Bears teams before consolidation). The Cougars/Golden Bears have had great success and Brownsville has always been a hot bed of talent and was coached for years by nationally renowned Coach John Hooper.

  13. VG my friend! How is life treating you?!?!? Hope all is well in your household. Life is good up here in Big RED Nation. So tell me, after reading Reitz post it sounds like the coach may have backed out. Do they or don't they have a coach hired? This is getting ridiculous! JCM and DC are Henry County's arch enemies and biggest rivals, but you never, ever like to hear of this kind of fiasco going on. The kids will be the ultimate ones to suffer. If there have been no organized workouts going on, then every game that JCM plays this year will be a carbon copy of last years HC game at the Rock.

What`s up my good friend `cephus? All is well here. I got my info from a good source, but the fact that I have not seen it announced in public yet worries me. ReitzFan may be right. I just can`t say for sure. I just post what I hear when I feel it comes from credible sources. It could be my source heard the job was going to be offered to Glover and assumed he would take if he had interviewed for it.

That's because VSC cannot find her the right "puppet" to take the job. Former JCM coach Cedric Hampton will coach at Northeast Middle in Jackson. He'll take a pay hit, but he'll be coaching his son and will not have to deal with VSC. Best of luck Coach Hampton.

I hope Hampton has better luck trying to coach middle school kids than he did with high school kids.

  14. Having JUST read this whole thread the only thing I can say it is SOOOO similar to the Clarksville NE thread it is scary!

BOTH involve female Principals who have NO idea what they are doing when it comes to athletics. NE also has the misfortune of having to play in one of the toughest Regions in 5A also and has a female AD as well who is OVER her head.

Will include BOTH schools in my prayers tonight as they are gonna need all the help they can get this season.

JCM also lost their athletic director for the past year. So that may have had some impact into the lateness. sounds like they have a good coach and that is the important issue for the team. ELA used to argue with me on the public/private board about whether it was good athletes or good coaching that was most important. The last coach at JCM proved my point. Unless you have a good coach it really doesn`t matter what kind of talent you have. I would have loved if they could have hired a new coach back last spring, but the important thing was to hire a good coach.

  15. I guess I didn't read closely enough. I just went back and read that present players are excluded. Sorry. I guess I am so ready for football season that is where my mind was focused. I don't know very much about past players, so I will shut up now. Thanks, wingman.
