  1. Interesting topic - as I read several of these comments, I am somewhat amused by the thought that the only reason the band is there is for the football team's enjoyment! A nice high school jock thought! While playing at football games is fun, it is not the sole reason for the band!! Band kids take heart!! - when you go back to your 10, 20, and 30 year high school reunions, look for the old jocks and ask them when was the last football game they played and are they still playing! I think you already know the answer!! - then look up your band friends and see when they last played their instrument- you just might find that many are still playing - some with the local community bands and orchestras - some with the local jazz and big bands in the area - some playing professionally - and some just playing for the pure enjoyment of playing in a group and making music for everyone to enjoy! That's why you're in the band! And don't let anyone tell you anything differently!! Enjoy it to the fullest!! It lasts a lifetime!!

I have never approved of people tearing down band or kids who care a great deal about it and put so much effort into it. It's irresponsible and uninformed. Likewise, a response like that is just as irresponsible. You don't have to put one group down in order to defend another. I'm not saying you shouldn't call someone on their bull but at least take the high road when doing it. Even if they won't. However, I do very much agree that if you keep up with your instrument it's a wonderful gift to be able to share.

I, for one, think that marching bands as we know them have benefited greatly over the years from football as a vehicle for exposure and growth. They have always been a part of the whole experience and one I wouldn't want to live without. With the growing popularity of organizations like DCI bands have taken on a life of their own beyond sports and that's just the natural progression of competition. Personally, I like drum line competitions.

I just wish we could get away from this "jock" vs" band nerd" garbage. Neither football nor band are about making you better then someone else. They are both about making you and better "you". They are about teaching kids how to be good citizens and to be the best people that they can be. Yes, they both compete and you had better be out there to win but if that's all a student is getting out if it then we have all missed the point.

While I understand what you said about the eligiblity situation, you have an A - B transfer that was ok but then you have a B-C transfer without a change of residence. When you look in the by-laws, sections 11, 12, and 13 go a little deeper than the general statement on the student flyer. I do not disagree with your statement, I just believe it goes deeper and there is an issue. I hate it for kid if there is a problem. Did he receive bad advice? Of course any advice would then be in violation of section 17, the R word....

There could very well be a deeper issue. Of course, now we're getting into things like in Section 17.....what defines "undue influence "............

  3. So does he sit out now....or what?? Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

I would doubt it. The TSSAA says that if a student transfer has practiced with a team for 3 or more days at the school where he/she were previously enrolled then they would be ineligible for 12 months to play that sport unless there is a change of residence. I believe that is what Dragonmaster was getting at but that rule shouldn't be an issue anyway since basketball teams cannot officially practice yet. The rule that would apply is the one that states that a student must be enrolled before the 20th day of school, in regular attendance, and carry 5 full courses during the present semseter. In this case, Mayo would be in the clear to play.

  6. **UPDATE**

I spoke with a football coach from Houston friday night and he informed me that Todd Mayo was enrolled and attending classes at Houston.

As for now, it appears he is a Mustang so I suppose the question is does he stay or not.

  7. It is sad that many athletes don't look at academics first when they move into an area. White Station has a great academic program. Houston's is also very solid. MUS among the privates are is the best. MAYBE A GOOD EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC FOUNDATION WOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT TO THE PARENTS THAN WINNING 25 OR 30 GAMES. IF HE IS A GOOD PLAYER THE COLLEGES WILL FIND HIM AND THEY ALREADY HAVE HIM IN THIER RADAR. YES Houston and Collierville will always struggle in boy's hoops, but priorities are different in every situation.

    Not always.

Some coaches don't always promote their players like they should. If you don't play AAU circuits you will be ignored by the recruiting services ( which do have an impact) all the while having the potential to be a Top 100 player and fall through the cracks. I can understand a potential high profile recruit going to a school with some history of getting players into big schools and major D-1 programs. It's not about winning games per se but rather it comes down to exposure. Being a high profile recruit on a high profile team can get you the attention of high profile college programs.

Houston and C-ville are both fine schools and if I had kids I wouldn't have a second thought about sending them there. Briarcrest's academics are more than fine I'm sure. ( and please let me stress that there isn't any hard evidence that he's going there) And I'm not so sure the Mustangs and Dragons will always struggle in basketball. I used to say the same thing about Bolton and football.

  8. The last 5 years are above! I agree that Memphis is a Powerhouse Program too! But don't compare them to North Carolina yet! (I said yet... give Memphis a few more years I believe they could be up there)

UNC is a blueblood program. There are a lot of schools that would love to be considered such when only a handful can truely refer to themselves that way.( UCLA, UK,UNC,KU,Duke) No, I wouldn't put Memphis in that category and not by a long shot. That takes years and years of success. It takes time and luck.

Now, would I compare Memphis as an elite program with UNC as of right now? You better believe I would.
