  1. Ted Wilson is right up there. Ted led Maryville to 3 state titles. Maryville had a 85% winning percentage when he was there. Ted was a master motivator. Ted coached at Maryville from 1966-1980. Ted left Maryville to go to Dobyns Bennett. Ted did well there also.

That was my first reaction, but Quarles is right up there.

  2. Ok this isnt about a crowd, but I have a question for tngator. How can you be a tennessee gator, b/c 1st off there are no alligators in tennessee, so thats eliminated. 2nd off you cant possibly like both the vols and the gators, and last, if number 2 was correct, you are a sick person.

LOL, Dad brought me up as a UT fan, but I saw the light when PF backstabbed his way into the job. Born and raised in the East Tn area, still like the Vols to an extent, except for the 3rd game on the schedule.

  3. Rule. They were a dirty football team. Their fans were awful. They threw stuff on us all the time when we went under their stands. Coffee, cokes, liquor would be poured on us. They spit on us too. Plus! Maryville and Rule were always the 2 best teams in the district. Back then if you didn't win your district you didn't go to the playoffs. It was always for the district championship.

RR: when did you play at MHS? I agree, playing at Rule was a nightmare, you would come out of the locker room, up the tunnel and it was like you had garbage cans being dumped on you. It was the only road game that Coach Story made us put our helmets on before leaving the locker room. I miss the old region, eventhough MHS has been doing quite well for itself.

  4. This is kind of a take off from another thread, but what is the largest crowd that you have ever seen at a regular season game? The biggest one that I remember locally was at a Maryville / AE game in 1987 that had about 5,000 (stadium only held maybe 3500 or so; I think).

  5. cool ---> appreciate it! Ya know, that is one of the biggest differences that you see between the scrimmages now versus the past; now they are scrimmaging healthy competition. I can remember our scrimmages from 1985-87 time frame: Sullivan South, Seymour and once against Rhea Co (when Andy Kelly was a rising Senior). Not that there is anything wrong with those schools, but for the most part, we were under matched.

  6. Alcoas nationally ranked 89' team

-shannon Mitchell- UGA/ chargers- still holds the record for most catches in a game at uga with 15 against florida

-billy williams- ut/arizona cardinals & washington redskins

    -jamie henry -ut

    -chad smith-

    -tyris gilmore-mississippi state

    -kevin jackson-football/baseball-tennessee tech

    -Homer Henderson, russ wimbley

Also Alcoas 2000 team had 15-0 record and won the schools 5th state title...thats enough to get a mention fro.m me

featured 3 time 100 meter state champ james rainer and mr. football qb michael george. a team that was loaded with speed and finished the season giving up a school record 6.8 ppg while scoring 37 ppg

    Don't forget Peanut Isom!

  7. Stat Wise: Troy Fleming

Pure Power (only got to see him on film): Al Davis Sr ---Alcoa

Power & Speed: Leroy Thompson --Austin East

Homer Vote: 1985 Maryville backfield; they had something like 3,000 yards rushing running the double wing.

I have to agree with the guy @ 3 pages back (too late to go that far back to quote verbatim). I was at the Red Bank/MHS game when Riggs was a senior and saw nothing very impressive. He ran down to the MHS end of the field during pre-game and was thumping his chest, LOL. Take away 3 runs late in the game and he has less than 35 yards rushing. He would take himself out of the game and his Dad would be there at the fence behind the bench screaming at him. Riggs may have been running behind an injured line; however, the depth chart said they were all regular season starters. He had good speed, but a terrible head.

  8. Who part of the state do u think has the best teams? And dont take these back 20 years. Which part has had the best teams in the last 5 years?

Without looking, it's probably closer than I would think, but then again, count the # of trophies that have came back to East Tennessee in the past five years (gotta stretch that to 6 to pick up that other one for Maryville :P;) )
