Don’t get me wrong, Gallatin did some things right in that game and we had no answer on defense. However Looking back at that game, one would wonder how MJ lost. I’m just glad they’ve rebounded the way they have.

Shame you had to work, you missed a good game. You could have meet Coach Gentry from Lebanon and talked some about next weeks game. Also could have talked with some DCA coaches who coached Scooter Edwards whose son is number 34 for MJ and scored twice last night. Plenty of scoop for your weekly post.

They are, my point being If MT Juliet wants to be in the upper echelon of 5a. This game needs to be won handily by MJ. I think SC is good but not great. MJ I’m still unsure of. This game can really clarify things for me.

I will be at game. Are you ignoring me? Do you know me?

Yes back to the subject lol, I really do get a lot of people worked up. It’s quite funny.

Anyways, it’ll be a tough one for the Bears. They haven’t shown me much since last season when playing tough opponents. With a win, They can change my mind Friday.

I will be at game. I am a MJ fan also. I would like to meet you if possible?

Open zone has killed metro football. Players should be allowed to go to school anywhere they want but only play in their zoned school if people want it competitive like it once was. Otherwise it is going to stay like it is. The teams with the best players win. Got nothing to do with coaching . Some schools are playing against teams that not one player on their team could start for their opponent. The playing field is so unlevel.

I felt like the overall team discipline reacted well. Fellow players were immediately on the fighting player and he was sent straight to the locker room by the head coach. I don’t believe the refs ejected him, which seemed odd also. Maybe they didn’t see everything.

Coaches teach and demand discipline from the players. So many undisciplined selfish players on every team these days. We see players on TV at college and pro level that can't control their emotions. It is just the world we sadly are living in.  Not just metro and public schools that have these players also. It is such a me society and kids see and learn this behavior from social media outlets and even in adults. Dysfunctional world.

I can agree in part with what you said Buddy.  However Hillsboro cannot fall under your scenario this year.  They've historically had great players, but are 0-5, soon to be 0-6.   Sad, considering all the new upgrades to the school/facility.

Sure, great players can make a coach look good, but if a coach can't line them up and get them to know their responsibility and assignment, and get them to play as a team, then they ain't going far.   Which why most metro teams have historically struggled in the playoffs (with exceptions), because like you say "when talent is equal, then coaching matters".  Cheers to week 6!

most times this is the answer but not always

Too many coaches now do not see it this way.

Being an older guy I remember a principal that told all coaches that when your sport is over, it is over. Nothing with that sport till next season. Any coach not doing this will not be coaching here. So kids in his school could freely play 3 sports and in the summer be a kid. Many good players played in college and beyond.

Is it coaching? Or are the players being plundered by the privates, Williamson, and Rutherford?

Always been about teams with best players will win most. Coaching can have impact but I have seen great players really make a coach look good. When talent is equal coaching will make a difference.

In 1970 Cathedral (All Girls School) closed and Father Ryan admitted females.

One idea that someone presented to me about one month ago has the Diocese of Nashville purchasing Aquinas, St. Cecelia and Overbrook.  They would then lease the Aquinas buildings back to the Dominicans so that they were able to continue offering a BS in education for the Dominican nuns.  The St. Cecelia and Overbrook schools would become a 7-12 Diocesan All Girls Catholic school.  Father Ryan would then become a 7-12 All Boys Catholic school and operate at the current Norwood Dr. location.  While this idea could really fill a void, especially with the new school opening in Nolensville I am not sure that it has the support of the necessary decision makers.  If made this decision would eliminate the need to build any additional buildings on the now land locked Father Ryan campus but the land purchase from the Dominicans would not be inexpensive.  This plan would also fill a necessary void and Nashville would then have an All Boys Catholic School along with an All Girls Catholic school that was operated by the Diocese of Nashville.  These two single sex schools would be sandwiched between Pope John Paul II and the new school that is to be built in Nolensville.  One thing that I have found to be true in the Diocese of Nashville is that they always seem to be reactive when it comes to education.  It would be nice if they would find some forward thinking individuals that  know how to get things done.

I am guessing you have been around as long as I have so give me your opinion of all the talented athletes in the 60's that played at a high level in college and even the pros without spring football, all the year conditioning , sport specialization, weight training , summer camps, 7 on 7, and these so called trainers , FR has plenty of players on there current football team as do many schools. What is missing with those not winning is players with better talent. I remember a Pearl team with players in low 20's , not Pearl Cohn, that beat an MBA Tommy Owen team with 90 players and beat them at MBA on homecoming. It always has been about players and always will be.

I was at that game. When Bellevue started calling their timeouts with Goodlettsville pinned deep as the half ended, my dad told me he thought they were setting up to force a punt, a fair catch, and a free kick. No one around us had any idea what he was talking about.

First time I ever saw it

In the Middle Tennessee area, this is the 3rd time in 45 years this rule has been invoked.

When I was at Goodlettsville HS Bellevue HS did the same thing. Amazing that many people do not even know the rule .

MJ strutted down the field to score quick. Special teams error leads to a 6-0 lead, Beech then took over to go up 14-6… followed by MJ easily strutting down the field again to attempt to tie the game. Two point convo was no good.

I was at scrimmage last night and MJ did some good things. Looking forward to next Friday night since I have become a new fan of MJ football.

Gallatin got some good work in with a much improved Portland squad.  Panthers have some players this year.   I would not be surprised to see them get a playoff spot this year.  Gallatin’s defense continues to impress.  They have up some yardage but kept Portland from the end zone.  Offensively, Gallatin needs to maintain drives and stay out of the 3rd and long situations.   True test comes this week.

I am now a MJ fan. Looking forward to next Friday night.

I used to get excited about this when all the teams came to Maryville College on Saturday to play 7 on 7 then it became apparent this was a total false reading on what fall football really would be about. Now it reminds me of Old Man Sex where you go down to the local restaurant and watch all the pretty girls come in then you get tired and go home because your all worn out. It just wears me out to watch something like 7 on 7 because it ain't the real thing.

Old Man Sex I can relate to! It is not real football for sure.

Although I love my HC (Hammontree) at Maryville, he was not one who liked any of our players wrestling. Every day he tried to talk me out of wrestling and cutting weight. I get it, but at the same time I disagree with his philosophy.

If you look at our current lineup from 145 pounds and up they will almost all be football players. A couple stopped playing football to focus on wrestling, but the rest of them we share with football on a daily basis.

thank goodness wrestling now has a limit on weight loss and time to safely loose the weight.

We win more than a few. To answer cbg's point, until recently the football coaches weren't too keen on sending players our way but in no way do we prefer specialization. That why I made it a point to build our K-8 feeder club with a ton of kids from the Bears and Rebs. Look at our current HS football roster and you'll see a bunch of former and current wrestlers. So this year and from here on out cbg will see us in the Top 10 if not higher.

back in better days of high school sports any coach who told a kid he could not play another sport would not even happen. coaches wanted players in other sports and players were encouraged to play other sports and also wanted to. tssaa calendar and by laws would not even allow sports out of season to do anything anyway. in some schools the principal would dismiss any coach that tried to encourage a kid specialize. of course then most all principals were former coaches and we all know how much better schools were then. that is another subject though.

There was talk in the early 80's about Oak Ridge starting a program.  They even had the Orange & White match of The University of Tennessee at OR one season.  The primary reason that OR has never started a program is that the football coach has never demanded that a wrestling program be started.  The honest truth is that most football coaches are control freaks and don't want to share athletes with the other high school sports programs in the school.  Talk about supporting multi-sport athletes sounds good but very few coaches are sincere when making those statements.  If the football coach really wanted his players to participate in other sports he would tell them that he expected them to wrestle, play basketball, soccer, etc...  Talk is cheap but true actions are what makes things change!

A great example of a great wrestler and being a great football player is Scott Wells a former Brentwood Academy athlete. He not only was an undefeated wrestler but went on to be a great player at the University of Tennessee and then an 11 year pro career as an offensive center for the world champion Green Bay Packers. He was an all -pro selection also. His ability to play college and pro is his understanding of leverage in blocking. Wrestling no doubt allowed him to be a great football player.
