1. What was the nature of Johnsons injury that held him out?  Was it just a precaution or something serious???

    825678993

I was told it was a groin injury - nothing serious, but didn't want to take needless risks in a spring scrimmage.

  2. CCMAN84, report on the Halls scrimmage, how did it go?????????

    825678284

Halls shut the Cougars out in a controlled scrimmage 5-0. The young defense of the Cougars had some problems with the Wing T ran by Halls. That and the fact that Halls has a HUGE and fast RB #42 who can really play. For the most part, the D held their own, but big plays with Halls' counters and misdirections really hurt. On the first series, the Cougars broke up a pass and held Halls to 4 yards on 2 carries through the middle. However, on play #4, #42 dragged across the middle catching a short pass, found a sideline seam and went 66 yards for a TD.

It was like that most of the scrimmage: the Cougars would hold Halls for a few plays and then #42 or #45 would break a big run or catch a big pass.

The defense does hold promise with some good size on the line and athleticism at LB and DB.

The Campbell Co. offense, with Chris Johnson in street clothes, showed promise with the strong running of Josh Howard. Although they moved the ball well between the 30's, they never found the endzone. Jr.-to-be QB Brance Stiner appears fully recoverd from the broken thum-b that sidelined late last season, but needs to work with his young WR corps during the offseason to get their timing a little better. The O-Line gave Stiner time to pass on the most part and opened some good holes for Howard. A summer in the weight room and conditioning and the return of Johnson should make the Cougars a strong offense heading into August. Howard appears ready to play and will take pressure off Johnson and Stiner. The young WRs need to really work this summer. The Cougars have talent at the postion, but they need to work on their routes and get their timing with Stiner down better.

  3. Viking,

Who do you feel are the most likely candidates from that group to give D-B a challenge.

    825673489

I haven't heard enough about the other teams to make an educated guess, but based on some factors from last year, I would have to go, relunctantly, with Jefferson Co. The reason I am relunctant is because I hate the thoughts of seeing all of JC4Life's posts on here! <_<

I can't see Bearden being a factor with the turmoil that surrounded their program last year. Karns lost a major portion of their offense with the graduation of Elders.

If the Campbell Co. defense matures in a hurry, they should make another playoff run, but I wonder about what Science Hill and Sevier Co. will have.

How bad was Dobyns-Bennett hurt by graduation? I know they lost their stud WR and QB, but expect them to simply reload.

  4. With spring practice winding down, are there any teams that can challenge Dobyns-Bennett for the Region 1 5A crown?

Can Jefferson Co., led by Shiverdecker, pose a threat?

Will Sevier Co. and Science Hill rebound from disappointing seasons (by their standards) to challenge?

Will Campbell Co. prove last year was no fluke and continue the upward swing of their program?

Can Karns and Bearden mount a challenge to put the Knox area schools back in contention?

    Any thoughts?

  5. I believe some of you are forgetting in the NFL world of salary caps that a player such as the Tant young man may fill a need........ At a cost that is affordable to certain teams. Play special teams, catch a ball or two out of the backfield, lay a block or two...... Plus, in the sophiscated offences some of the NFL teams run, they need people with INTELLIGENCE WHO CAN REMEMBER THEIR ASSIGNMENTS.

No, the Tant young man may just give the Chargers the type of player they need, at a cost they can afford.........

Also, some of you highly intelligent posters on this thread that don't think he has a chance, there were only 5 FB drafted, which tells me that a free agent FB has a REAL OPPORTUNITY to make a roster. Look no farther than our own Titans......

Pretty obvious that many of you are clueless what teams look for in a draft, what positions they will draft, what positions are filled routinely thru the free agent system.....

    825661033

I seem to remember the Dallas Cowgirls signed a S from Tennessee who's main claim to fame was that Hershel Walker walked over him enroute to a TD. I thought it was a joke that Dallas signed this guy . . . a few years later the NFL made a special position for a special team player in the Pro Bowl. Bill Bates redefined special teams and intense play in the NFL. ALthough I've hated the Cowboys ever since Drew Pearson committed an uncalled pass interference on the infamous Hail Mary pass in 1975 denying my Vikings another possible Super Bowl trip, Bates made them tolerable. He was a fierce competitor who gave it his all on every play. Not the most athletic or talented, but I would want a guy like that on my team any day. If the Vandy kid has anything of Bates' intensity, it would not surprise me to see him playing in September. If not, a Vandy degree, unlike their football team, is nothing to laugh at . . .

  6. Well mark it down, the Detroit Lions have selected a WR in the 1st round. Now the Lions have Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Az Hakim, Kevin Johnson and Marcus Pollard. At running back they have Kevin Jones and Shawn Bryson. So Joey Harrington has no excuse now up in Detroit. If all there players stay healthy and they improve on defense throughout the rest of the draft this team could be a playoff team in 2005.

    825655413

They may be stacked, but who is going to throw them the ball? When they have needs elsewhere, why blow a #1 pick on a WR that only played 2 years college ball and biggest asset is possible red zone plays? Williams mayu turn out to be the next Jerry Rice or Randy Moss, but the Lions already had a strong WR corps. They would have been better suited to get another QB or more OL or fill some holes on the D side of the ball. Harrington can't throw to the superbly talented WRs if he is flat on his ball. Did the Lions not pay attention to their division rivals moves on defense?

  7. Electronic checks take several days to clear but I activated it early for you.

THANK YOU! A friendly suggestion would be to prominently put on the front page the excellent deal for Plus Members. It is an incredible bargain that is very inexpensive. I had not joined the Plus membership because my wife would kill me for paying for another expensive internet board, but your fee is so reasonable it is a no-brainer to go Plus! Thanks again!

  8. Who is Campbell Co Scrimmaging this spring?

    825661070

The Cougars scrimmaged Cocke County at Campbell County on Monday, May 9. I arrived somewhat late but was told that the Cougars prevailed in the controlled scrimmage by a score of 4 touchdowns to 0.

On offense, the Cougars were led by Sr. RB Chris Johnson with 3 touchdowns, 2 through the air. Jr. QB Brance Stiner was on target with his passes and scrambled about 30 yds for another TD. The Cougars lost some key OL to graduation, but have a solid base to rebuild from with Sr. Joe Whitaker and Matt Goins.

On the D, the Cougars once again fielded a solid defense. Although DC Wampler is charged with the task of replacing practically the entire D-Line and LB corps, the Cougars posted a shut-out vs. Cocke County. Led by MLB Jesse Bowman, the Cougars flew to the ball all night and prevented Cocke Co. from finding the endzone.

On Tuesday, May 17, the Cougars travel to Halls for a 5:00 scrimmage to close out spring practice. This will be a good test for HC Dewayne Wells' Cougars, especially the young defense. See you there!

  9. According to a classification thing on TSSAA it says this:

In Divison 1, schools playing football shall be divided into five classes based on the total number of schools playing football. Therefore, schools are classed as follows:

1A: Schools with an enrollment of 361 and under

2A: Schools with an enrollment of 364 to 673

3A: Schools with an enrollment of 675 to 957

4A: Schools with an enrollment of 961 to 1,347

5A: Schools with an enrollment of 1,348 and above

The thing doesn't really make sense. What if your school has 959 students? I guess they look at the numbers at that point and analyze it to determine what class a certain school belongs in. In some cases, such as Elizabethton, they are allowed to be in 4A even though they don't have enough students due to them being successful in that class.

    825455281

If 5A is 1,348 and above, why is Maryville still 4A with 1,351 students as reported on CoachT? Maryville vs. Oak Ridge, Kingsport Dobyns Bennett, Soddy Daisy, etc. would be awesome match-ups.

  10. Reviez is a JR.  If they don't get by OR watch for his name in the paper for Wrestling!  He is favored to win Region and place in the State.

    825419095

He had an unbelievable game tonight. The kid was all over the field and he knows how to pop the pads. Farragut's PK is also very impressive.

  11. Campbell County, one playoff appearance does not give u the ability to talk junk.  hicks............................

good season though, maybe next year

    825419055

First of all, perhaps you should check the poster's handle before you insult Campbell Co. We are the COUGARS, not the Bulldogs. As far as the "hick" comment, you are simply showing your "elite" class.

I do not think bdog was trying to insult Farragut as much as trying to point out that CC and OR are on different levels. Hopefully we will see the Admirals again next year in the playoffs. We will still have Johnson abd QB Stiner will be back from injury: I hope Reveiz is a senior.

  12. Congradulations Campbell CO on a great season.  You guys should be proud of yourselves.  Come back hard next year and go even farther.

    825419017

Thank you bdog3741 for the kind comments. It has been a wonderful year for the Cougar Nation. The encouragement & respect from fans & players from other teams has been great. It is sad that the season had to end tonight, but these Campbell Co. Cougars have accomplished something very special not only for themselves, their coaches & fans, but have uplifted the entire community.

In the game, Reviez was an absolute wrecking crew for the Admirals. For the most part, the Cougars were ineffective on offense and Farragut held Jr. Chris Johnson in check until be broke off a 75 yd TD run. Chris finished the night with 103 yards on 15 carries. If the returning talent has learned from the dpearting Senior class, next year could be even more special! thumb

CONGRATS COUGARS ON A GREAT SEASON! ONE HEARTBEAT!

  13. Lets continue the "Comparison Game" shall we?

You've been beat 3 times. Two of the three teams are not in the playoffs and the 3rd team had a shut out. There is no strength in the teams that beat you.

Farragut has been beat twice. Both teams are in the playoffs. Plenty of strength there.

Give farragut some credit, they are a good football team.

    825411618

KnoxSoddy, you should be in DC because you are a wonderful spinmeister! Please tell me where in any of my posts I discredit the Admirals. I KNOW they are a very good football team. The intent of my posts was to merely point out that the Cougars will not keel over in awe of the mighty Region 2 5A team. These Cougars do know how to play a little Defense and definitely know how to make the pads pop!

The smack about the teams that beat the Cougars is comical. "There is no strength in the teams that beat you" - Are you saying there is "no stength" in the #1 ranked 5A team in the state?!? Fifteen years ago I would have asked you to share some of that good stuff you must be on!

  14. Not an expert and I have not seen Campbell County play.

But I know this, you beat a below average Karns team by 6 points on a fake fieldgoal. WOW!

Farragut played Oak Ridge and Ooltewah HARD. Won one and lost the other, but should have won.

Bottom line, Farragut has more offence and defense and comes out with the win.

    825411063

If you want to play the "Comparison Game", let's talk about the mutual opponent Bearden Bulldogs. The Swabs pulled out a 14-0 victory, yet the Cougars won 34-0. I guess both team can take pride in a shut-out victory.

If the Cougars had Stiner, they would take this game easily. Even with a limited offensive package, the Cougar D should keep things interesting - could even be like the MoEast game where the D accounted for everything in the 9-0 shut-out.

  15. Farragut will win this game. After a big win over Ooltewah I think we will ride the moumentum to round 2 of the playoffs

    825409770

That "momentum" may be stopped dead in its tracks Friday night in Campbell Co. The Cougar Defense is not to be taken lightly. Everybody talked about how the Karns mighty offensive line would overpower the smaller Cougar D and Elder would gain 200+. Karns total offensive production for the night was 108 yards, with Elder getting about 70. The Cougar D is smallish, but they are very quick and hit like freight trains. Better tighten the chinstraps Admirals, it's going to be a slobber-knocker!

  16. Cougars are now 7-3 and get in the playoffs.  They secure the runner-up spot in the region. Good Job guys!

    2004  Region 1 5A Runner-up

    825407005

Absolutely unbelievable game for the Cougar D! They kept Elder in check all night and Karns only threatened one time in the 1st quarter when they started from the Cougar 39 after an Elder punt return. They missed a 34 yd FG attempt and never crossed the 50 THE REST OF THE GAME!

Unofficially, Chris Johnson gained 153 yards on the night. Congrats to the TEAM EFFORT!
