  1. I was up in Nashville last weekend for the MBA Middle School dual meet tournament and I saw Mark Simpson wrestle -- he is the real deal. I also saw Michael Story and Carlos Calloway wrestle during the course of the day and they too are fine wrestlers. However, they are certainly not in Mark Simpson's league. He is an exceptional wrestler with technique and ability far beyond his that of his contemporaries.

In fact, after talking to some friends up there, I learned that Mark pinned Michael Story the week before the dual meet tournament (perhaps that is why BMS did not put Michael on the mat with Mark during their match with MBA at the dual tournament).

Also, I received an email this morning informing me that Mark pinned Carlos Calloway last night. The fall took place 20 seconds into the 3rd period while Mark was leading 13-5 (the fact that he scored some points and that he made it into the 3rd period is a testament to Carlos' wrestling ability).

So, Mark Simpson it appears that Mark is the cream of the crop in his weight class.

Random Ruminations from all of the above posts:

In fairness to Carlos Calloway and Michael Story, They are both 88 lbers. When Michael got pinned by Mark Simpson, he was wrestling up to 95 lbs. That makes Carlo's performance against Mark that much more impressive. I don't know Mark's weight, but he looks bigger than either Michael or Carlos. Having said that, Mark and Cameron Croy are the 2 best middle schoolers i've seen this year.

Carlos has really improved his game from last year. The match between him and Story in the MBA Duals was the best match of the whole tournament - bar none. Hopefully, we'll get to see those boys square off in the finals of HVAC. If not, we should make the 2 dads wrestle! There pretty animated in the stands.

Brentwood actually has 5 wrestlers undefeated in HVAC competition - Cameron Croy, Blake Thomas, Chris Hoop, Drew Doggett, and John McCoy.

Its neat to see this Middle School talk -lets keep it up!

  2. Brentwood Middle is loaded this year. 5 HVAC champions from last year returned: Michael Story - 88 lbs., Blake Thomas - 107 lbs., Chris Hoop - 112 lbs., Drew Doggett - 135 lbs., and Cameron Croy - 160 lbs. Those 5 have a combined record of somewhere around 75-2 already this season. The team is 13-0 in dual competition in HVAC and have outscored their opponents about 800 to 200.

I have also seen Mark Simpson wrestle.... incredible technique, very tough kid. He is pound for pound one of the toughest middle school wrestlers in the state.

Mark Simpson and Cameron Croy are the 2 best wrestlers in HVAC this year.

  3. The score was 72-12. The only kid that was impressive was Brent Belchers nephew ( the Lake Forest Coach) but I don't know his name. Lake Forest only lost one match in Tennessee and beat the 2yr Hamilton County Champs, Hunter Middle.

Several of the kids had impressive records. They are even a stronger freshmen class with the addition of several of Ocoee middles best wrestlers who also had impressive records.

    Good luck to Cleveland

its a shame we can't match cleveland middle , lake forest, and brentwood middle school(brentwood tn) together for a tr-match. brentwood middle is undefeated on the season with a 13-0 record. they have outscored their opponents 816 - 224. This past weekend, they won their second consecutive MBA dual tournament title. One of their wins was over McCallie(65-18). Not saying their better, it would be fun to watch a couple of really competitive middle school teams from different parts of the state rumble for bragging rights.

p.s. Brentwood Middle beat Cleveland Middle in last years MBA duals 57 - 21.

  4. Nuts and Bolts, Nuts and Bolts, We Got SCREWED!!!!!!!!!!!! B)

This was a good game of fotball; all but one play at least. Isn't it funny how one official can throw an entire season out the window on one absurd call?

Gallatin had the lead 9-7 in the middle of the 4th quarter when Brentwood kicked something like a 35 yard field goal. The kick was far left, but there was a flag on the play.... roughing the kicker on Gallatin. This would be reasonable had the Gallatin defender even touched the kicker, or had the white hat not waited to make sure that the kick was going to be no good before he threw the flag. Thats right, the judge did not even watch the kicker, he watched the ball! Then to beat it all, the kicker fell on the ground in agony and "had to be" carried off the field by two linemen only to be able to come in 3 plays later B) and kick to make it a 10-9 game. Best Kicker of the Year, yeah right, more like best actor of the year! You get my vote :thumb:

    Hey Gtowner, WAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH......................!

  5. I have wrestled for 4 1/2-5 years and I am now wrestling collegiatly. As of tonight to be exact I have taken over the coaching position of an AAU team. I have never coached before and I figured some advice from those more experienced would be very helpful. The kids are 5th-8th grade, any advice is greatly appreciated.

if there getting beat, i always yell, "that ain't working - do something different!"

  6. Coach Cash did a great job at Brentwood Middle but they were going to be loaded anyway. The key to Franklin's success and Brentwood's success is the # of kids who wrestle in clubs in the offseason. Both schools have numerous guys that wrestled Williamson County Wrestling and Copperheads. Brentwood Middle how almost 70 kids come out for wrestling this year and probably 20 of them did club wrestling. A large number of the Franklin and Brentwood guys are also involved in Freestyle and Greco clubs.

By the way, Jarrod Ruez took over for Coach Cash at BMS. They are 4-0 on the year having outscored their opponents 251-73. Today, they drilled a good Ensworth team 57 - 21.

  7. Brentwood will be better. Coach Blair has some talented Sophomores. Kellen Holliman is going to get that state championship and Jonathan Brown and Seth Jones will have solid senior seasons. He also has a talented freshman in Russell Hoop. Region 6 better get Brentwood now because Blair's has 4 HVAC champion 8th graders coming up from BMS next year. The Bruins will really be solid in a couple of years.

  8. any one else heard anything about or seen the two freshmen from blackman...patton and procter...???

I saw procter several times at USA and AAU tournaments. Good athlete who will be a good wrestler when he develops his A game. I think this year will be an eye opener when he starts wrestling with the men. Russell Hoop, freshman at Brentwood High, is a better wrestler but physically will struggle some. He beat Proctor twice last year and lost to him in overtime at the Cookeville AAU when in his own words, "He wrestled like a moron". Those boys will keep us entertained for the next 4 years along with Carson Burnett from Franklin. Burnett and Hoop went 3-3 in 6 matches last year and all 6 matches were decided by less than 4 points.

What weights are Procter and Burnett going? Anybody know? I hear Hoop is going 130 or 135.

  9. What high school wrestling programs offer freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling in the summer? Also, is Tennessee, especially East Tennessee, going to make a freestyle team and send it down to the Junior Olympics or other big tournaments like the one in Disney World. I think it would be great for wrestling here in East Tennessee.

Go www.tennwrestling.com for Freestyle & Greco information as this is USA wrestling's site. Their are great programs all over the state.

  10. Sounds like a good opportunity for Tennessee youth wrestlers.  I have already heard of several middle school kids planning to go from Chattanooga and Nashville.  Spread the word!
