1. I know where I live everyone will say "Oh it's the talent they play" but you couldn't prove that by me. My sons used to play Middle school but quit because they got tired of standing on the sidelines let alone they hit harder than the kids they were playing. My one son could knock their "star" player on his butt but he was still sidelined because he didn't have certain parents.

What year did your kids quit? Did they make it to atleast their 10th grade year? Ive personaly seen many "studs" in middle school never make it in highschool because 1. Playing against better competition 2. Parents let them quit before they have a chance to even learn the system and earn a right to play. The easy scape goat for this is always "politics".

As for the parents who have the kid who can knock the "star" player on his butt (not only talking about you here) many times the parent only sees that play in practice but in between plays while your talking to your friends, you never see the coach have to line your son up in the right spot everytime, or see the coach explain to him that even though that was a great hit, he was susposed to be running somewhere else and that if he hadnt made that great hit it would have been a touchdown because he screwed up.

Having coached a little myself i can say that as many posters on here have. Great talent doesnt always play and may give the appearance of favoratism but almost always its for reasons like i just mentioned. If I could just walk onto the field with your great sons and say "line up here and when you get the ball run here" then like in little league and middle school, "everyone could play"

  2. So us SD fans are supposed to tell our players they need to wait another 2 years while  .................................................................................  If this was a West Knoxville school things would be different.  And if Mr. Duncan is such a wonderful, legendary coach then why is he not coaching. I still say Powell can have him

If you havent noticed Bearden, the team you guys beat last year, hasnt just been a barn burner the last few years either. There hasnt been any changes there either. So dont say its just cause your in South Knox.

  3. As a former HS coach and College player ill tell you. 4.5 40's are good for any position in Highschool and a TRUE 4.5 is even better. I would guess the average college prospect lineman (250 + pounds) is going to run in the 4.8 -5.05) of course there will be better times and worse times than that. The average college prospect at reciever, rb, db, and lb All grouped the same cause regardless of size will be about the same will range from 4.5 to 4.6 obviously some will be faster and some will be slower. As far as Highschool kids running sub 4.5 40's (legit) i havent seen it. (coached a rb who also won GA 5a 100 m in track and he only ran a 4.52 40.

As 40 times go, in general they are considered a tool to evaluate players speed. BUT it is not always a good tool. How many times have you ever seen a lineman run 40 yards straight in a game. or for that much how often does a rb break a 40+yard run. There are many things that a college coach looks at besides 40 time. I will admit that 40 time does catch their eye, but only if its extreem. such as a 4.3 or a 5.6.

just out of curiosity, who knows what Jerry Rices' or steve largent's was?

  4. Fan support is good here in Tn for the most part but like Tx and Pa. go to South GA and you'll see some real fan support. I just wish East tn (especially the Knox area) would put more support in to it from the admin. of the school point.

  5. 3500.00 for a head coach, you have to be kidding me.

    825461977

What a JOKE. If thats all you pay you'll never get anyone in there who can win. Unless it's by blind luck that you just get someone who wants a head job so bad that they will probably take a HUGE pay cut from their assistant job somewhere.

  6. The biggest problem you will come into if you allow school systems to decide and AD's approve transfers (without a valid move). Any coach worth anything is not going to let his AD approve a transfer of a student who is anygood at all. Therefore the only kids who will be allowed to transfer are the ones who arent 1st or potentially 1st string down the road material. Then after the transfer you run into the same problem. The parent is mad cause their son/daughter is not playing and then what? transfer back?

  7. Ghost-

I will agree with you, the CSCS exam was one of the most difficult tests I have ever taken. Only eclipsed by the NATA Athletic Trainers exam.

I understand a number of athletes are going to Ft. Sanders for SAQ. I think that is great, but how can an athlete expect to make marked improvments in such a large group setting?

The Athlete Training Center in Maryville (run by Appalachian Therapy) also provides sports performance training, in small group settings (no larger than 8). I've seen great improvments in my athletes performance, and have been able to provide greater attention to my athletes to address their specific needs.

I encourage anyone interested in training to ask questions, and do research on your own to find the best program to suit your needs. Professionals are often more than willing to answer questions and provide guidance regarding any question you might have.

To all of you athletes out there- good luck with your training. Be safe, work hard.

For a team like Bearden who is fixing to spend well over $5 gran to bring in a group for the next 7-8 months, what would you and ghost recomend? Is the 3 people fort sanders sends going to be good enough for about 50-70 kids or is there a better solution to this. ( besides bringing in 10 trainers)? Do you feel that our program will benifiit from bringing these guys in?

  8. I recommend that the booster's program at each school pay for a coach on staff at the high school to take the NSCA "CSCS" exam. I firmly believe that the off-season is where you mold the mind-set of the team, and your coaching staff must be visible and knowledgeable. I would not pay x amount of dollars to turn my players over to an outside source. I know that they know what they are doing, but my point is that the players need to see the coach(s) taking the lead in this. After all, a head coach wouldn't hire a consultant to call plays on Friday night would he?

As of last year, the 2 part test (CSCS)was between $200 and $250 dollars. Not that being certified is the most important aspect, but players might buy into it a bit more.

    825440131

that was recomended to the coach tonight but he was not interested in it.

  9. is htis oneof thebig topic at the bearden booster meeting

    825439908

Bearden is taking bids to have a strength and conditioning coaches come in and do our spring weight lifting and conditioning. Right now Fort sanders west has put in a bid and we are waiting on another company to submit another. Either way come jan 1 our coaches will not be conducting our strength and conditioning program all the way till camp. After reading everything that Grey Ghost has written im starting to believe this will be a good thing for our program.

  10. I will attempt to address several points in the replies above.  First off, it takes about 6 weeks to peak the speed of a conditioned athlete.  So, there is plenty of time in ..............  Anyway, I could go on and on about strength and conditioning programs, but I can't give away too many of my secrets, ha ha.

    825439066

Da%$... Im guessing your very educated in this area. Thanks, one question however. As a highschool coach, where could you go to get this kind of information? is there a clinic, class or what? Is this something every staff should or could have information to easily? once again thanks

  11. Unfortunately, many high school's idea of a strength coach is an assistant football coach that sits at a desk and reads the paper while the kids do nothing but bench press and curl or whatever the workout in this month's Muscle and Fiction is.  Then they go outside and run a mile and think that will make them faster.  Many of the high school weight programs are an absolute waste of time.  You get what you pay for.  Invest in your program, and you will reap the rewards.  I know that Hillwood has found that out. 21-2 over the last two years.  The kids have to believe in the program as well. If they see you running the weight program in a half-$$$ manner, they will approach it the same way.

    825438867

Who runs Hillwood's conditioning program? Coaches?

  12. If your involvement is only to raise money, I apologize.  And if the things are happening as you say they are, then the principal needs to demand changes on the part of the coaching staff.  But never.... never should the coaches or administration leave the impression with boosters that they are running the program.  From what I saw on film, this past season, of Bearden, I didn't think I saw a lot of speed or talent.  It's not always coaching, sometimes you just don't have the kids to win.

    825438869

If your comparing us to db your right. we dont have the talent to beat them. Compare us to Karns, Campbell Co. South Doyle, Sevier Co this year, we are compatable with them.

I realize that Jv isnt varsity but when the varsity now was jv they didnt lose but 1 game in 2 years i believe and none season before last. These kids are still here so there must be some talent somewhere. Like i said aleast better than 1-9

  13. surely to goodness, you all have a certified coach who knows the updated speed and strength techniques. like strength training, it's a year around process with flexibility, speed, explosion, etc. 4 weeks that late in the off-season process is a waste of money. use that money for speed equipment (chutes, resistant cords, etc.)

    good luck.

    825438768

I agree on all parts with you.

    anyone else have an opinion?

  14. From what I hear, he booster club needs to be reigned in.  Getting involved in speed training and the off season conditioning program?  Isn't that the job of the coaches?  Stick with fundraising and let the coaches, coach.  As for the survey, the principal is sending out to boosters, man what a lack of guts.  When you let parents think they are running the show, you've got trouble.

    825438777

The Head coach asked the booster club to pay for speed training in the summer. He wanted the booster to pay for it last year but he tried to "sign up" (for lack of a better term to) to late.

As for the parents, when we see kids laying around (litteraly) waiting on their turn to do sprints, Kids throwing helments, coaches telling kids to do something or their will be sprints and then not following through with it untill the last 2 weeks of the season, even though telling them every week, and numerous other things obivious to any one who can atleast tell who the qb is on the field, as parents we feel that there is something wrong with the program. Yes it is the players doing several of these things but isnt the coaches susposed to be in control over them? and if so shouldnt they take control of this situatuion? Then as parents we try to talk to coach about different things and get told "wait here ill be back in a minute" and he never returns. Then try to email Principle to talk and response we get is a survey. Your right there is a lack of guts somewhere from the staff on up the line. The booster club (speakin for myself) dont want to call plays or run the program, we want someone even if it is the present guy, to take charge and run this program and have some character and lead our kids not just let them do what they want. If someone would do that we may not win 10 games but we'll sure win more than 1.

  15. A lot of the kids today don't want to play for a .500 team though. The ones that are willing to do that are the ones that are out there. The same thing happened at my high school when I was a freshman. We went 6-3 and dominated some teams that come Jr. and Sr. year dominated us. We lost several lineman and our stud RB, because they didn't want to pay the price to be on a .500 team. Today it is too easy for kids to go to Catholic, Webb, CAK, or Grace and be instant players and not have to pay the dues and go .500 or they will just simply quit and go home after school. It is sad, but I believe that is what is happening more and more now days. Kids want instant gratification. If you can't promise them a Region Championship then they have better things to do. This happens especially at a place like Bearden, where the only true community spirit is the parents, players, and some of the school. Bearden and a lot of big city schools, lack that community support. Not many kids in West Knox grow up dying to be a Bearden Bulldog, like they do to be a Maryville Rebel or Oak Ridge Wildcat.

    825438760

Now with that i can agree with you on. That is one of my arguements is that if we keep at 1-9 there will be very few kids stay around. If were at .500 and close in the games we lose or even go 6 or 7 wins then you start to get the kids to come out and stay out.

  16. You guys have to be the biggest group of whiners I have ever seen. It is always the coach's fault. Not the fact that the kids are less talented. How many state championships does Bearden have? How many Region/District Championships? Bearden is not a powerhouse and probably never will be.

    825438711

May not have any state championships or many region/distric champs but when we have a jv team that didnt lose the previous 2 years and then when they hit varsity they go 1-9 something is missing. Not saying that Bearden should be 10-0 but should atleast be .500.

Besides if the only way someone can whine is if they have state championships thats gona mean that very few people can ever complain if their team does bad. If you'll go to http://www.tssaa.org/schdir/records/GetTheRecord.cfm

youll see that most teams in the state dont have a state championship.

and no this isnt a great history but its alot better than 1-9

  17. Who does your teams speed training during the off season. Your coaches or do they bring in outside "expert" instructors? Can anyone tell a difference in their program if they have done it both ways? Does 4 or 5 weeks in the summer really make enough difference that its worth the 3-5000 dollars it cost for an entire team? Give all the feed back you can.
