  1. Amen to RR! Don't know anything about Greeneville or their starting 11 seniors (hope they have some underclassmen for next year!) but the fact that the question was asking where the amazing 45 goals scored by 1 girl stood in comparison to other girls in the State was amusing! I know on our team, different girls scored a goal here and there but all that really mattered was whether THE TEAM scored. Our "non-scoring" defense was not too shabby either. Like RR, I would be proud of that goal scoring accomplishment. I just hope she was not one of the 11 seniors!!

Not sure why the term "amazing" has been applied here – I don’t think I ever gave the indication that it was such – also not sure why my original question would be considered “amusing†– see my previous response.

I think for the most part our team was pretty much like yours – primary concern was the team winning – team’s only goal for the season was to bring home the state title – so I guess in that respect it could be considered a disappointing season. But having said that, those girls provided many moments of pure joy: our top 6 scorers were all seniors, scoring 110 of the team’s 138 goals – the team also had a pretty good defense (in my opinion), giving up only 18 goals in 24 matches, with no team ever scoring more than 3 goals against them (done by Farragut in the team’s first match of the season against a goalie playing in her first varsity match), and only 5 other teams (Knox Catholic, Boyd Buchanan, Bearden, Maryville, and CAK) scoring 2 goals against us.

    . . . and yes the 45 goal scorer is a senior.

  2. Nope. Never said anything bad about this player or any other and won't. This topic has been put to bed years ago, or so it appeared. Because of the disparity and uneven level of play in Tennessee, bragging about this particular achievement is akin to bragging on being the world's best Amish auto mechanic. Be proud, tell a friend, tell your family but it's touchy subject on here.

Bragging? Think you misunderstood my original question: “As an aside - where can one find who is/are the leading goal scorers in the state? Greeneville forward has 45 this season - where does that stand among state leaders?â€

Don’t think there is any bragging there – asking a simple question about statistical comparison. My background is baseball – a sport that keeps statistics on EVERYTHING. Once you get past the win/loss, that’s what it’s all about – statistics. Not sure it’s any different in football, basketball, etc. So am I to assume it is different in soccer. We are all about the wins and losses, but we are to ignore the statistics?

Admittedly, even after “following†the sport for almost 12 years, I still don’t understand many of the nuances of the sport (i.e., off-sides), but it would appear there are few statistical comparisons outside of goals, assists, shutouts (maybe non-referee acknowledged holding, or non-referee acknowledged player knockdowns – ok I am just venting). So . . . all I was doing was asking a simple question – no bragging involved, because quite frankly there is nothing to brag about – where can one see what other players in the state have done – are such statistics kept?

  3. Exactly what record were you trying to break?

    Elizabethton 8-0

    Chuckey-Doak 10-0

    Grainger 11-0

    Dobyns-Bennett 8-1

    Powell 7-1

    Cumberland Gap 13-0

    Chuckey-Doak 14-0

    USJC 8-0

    Berean Christian 10-1

    McNairy Central 10-0

So am I to understand that it is a good player's fault that she happens to live/play in an area loaded with sub-par teams? It might help you to be more understanding if you knew what this player did in these matches.

    Elizabethton 8-0 She scored 3

    Chuckey-Doak 10-0 She scored 1

    Grainger 11-0 She scored 3

    Dobyns-Bennett 8-1 She scored 2

    Powell 7-1 She scored 1

All above were regular season matches, with the top 3 being "regional/district" matches where player/team/coach have no say in schedule - or in quality of team. In each of those matches this particular player played significantly less that half the match. Don't think your implication that she "padded her stats on poor teams" exists - if her coach had left her in longer, she would have scored many more goals. The last 2 teams - DB has consistently been one of the leading AAA teams in East TN, and state wise, for many years - this year happened to be a downer - it happens in sports. As for Powell, it was a "close" match until their goalie sustained a match ending injury on the initial goal scored at the 15 minute mark on a collison with this particular player. Admittedly, the goalie's replacement was not much of a replacement - but by then this player had again been long gone from the match.

Below matches were all playoff matches - thus coach left her in longer in some of the matches. Should she be penalized for doing her best, even if the opponents are again sub-par? She has no role in who her team plays - she just plays.

Cumberland Gap 13-0 She scored 2 District/regional tournament

    Chuckey-Doak 14-0 She scored 1 District/regional tournament

USJC 8-0 She scored 7 Regional finals

Berean Christian 10-1 She scored 5 Substate

McNairy Central 10-0 She scored 4 State quarter finals

To be fair, you should also consider some of her non-district/regional opponents, and her results there, before you pre-judge.

    Farragut 2-3 She scored 1

    CAK 2-1 She scored 2

    Cleveland 2-0 She scored 1

Coffee County 5-0 She scored 3 (To be fair, I don't really know the quality of this team, but to also be fair to the player, she had no say in the choosing of this opponent - it was scheduled as part of the CCS Tournament.)

Knox Catholic 2-2 She scored 1

Boyd Buchanan 3-2 She scored 3 (Again, to be fair, I don't know much about this team; another CCS Tournament opponent)

    CAK 1-2 She scored 1

If I sound defensive, I'm not trying to be. But some of the "holier than thou" attitudes, which in my opinion are clearly not justified, seem to set me off.

I'll be the first to admit that soccer in Tennessee is a long way from being where it should be, but should the players be penalized for the "stupid" decsions of the administrators running the sport? I don't think so. All they can do is go out and play.

  4. Any game without players from CAK, Baylor, Notre Dame, Soddy-Daisy, GPS should not be called an "all-star" game.

Would agree - but same thing could be said about Greeneville! Surely several of their starting 11 seniors are of all-star caliber.

As an aside - where can one find who is/are the leading goal scorers in the state? Greeneville forward has 45 this season - where does that stand among state leaders?

  5. From the Running up the Score thread-2010 edition...looks like Greeneville ties for top dog scoring machine... :thumb:

UPDATE-Winning spread so far is at 13 from what I have come across...

    White House 13 v Hillwood 0 September 2

    Station Camp 13 v Lebanon 0 September 2

    Rossview 13 v Springfield 0 September 13

    We want to request a waiver to our score: 1st team 8  ; 2nd team 4 :thumb: ; 3rd team 1 :P

  6. If I were you, which I am not, I would be MUCH more proud of the fact that Greeneville has competed with some of the best teams in the state and had great results there, rather than focusing on the 32-1 district scoring results.

Not sure but think you misunderstood my point - my responce was to someone asking why Region 1 (along with a couple of others) was having only a regional playoff vice a district and a region. Don't know this for sure, so much is opinion (for whatever that is worth :roflol: ) Believe its pretty much accepted that Greenville is the team to beat in the region - based upon ultimate decision of having only a regional playoff (again, in my opinion) the other schools did not want a repeat of last year, of which I provided supporting facts, of which the 32-1 total score was one, and these same schools did not want their teams repeating the "trama" they experienced during the regular season: Greeneville 6-0 in region with combined score of 44-1 (again one of those victories was a forfeit) . . . and that was with starters playing significantly less than half of each of those matches. Unfortunately for those girls (all 11 starters are seniors), they received significantly less playing time then they ordinarily would have due to the quality of the opposition, and their coach's desire to keep scores respectful. Mind you, those scores were achieved with multiple restrictions being applied (for instance last night once the score got to be 8-0, the only shots the girls were allowed to take were headers.) Believe me I am very proud of what those girls have done - both on the field and off - the last two years they have received national recognition for academic achievement - last year's team (26 players) had a combined 3.76 GPA. :thumb:

  7. On the "Scores Only" thread (what part of Score Only is difficult for people?), you asked what can a team do not to score 13. According to Soddy fans, your starters should not even have played. They claim that in such a situation as a district playoff game, their coach does not play their starters. I don't happen to agree with this philosophy, but it is an option.

I'm with you on this - when do you decide to play your starters (assuming you are in a very weak district/region) - when you get to Chattanooga? Think that's a little late. Fortunately this team has played a very strong out of district/region schedule.

  8. Can someone explain to me how the Region 1, 7 & 8 brackets work since the TSSAA just has the two districts listed as 4 games in each region..

    D

Speaking only for Region 1 - because the region consists of only 8 teams, and because Greeneville won last year's district and regional playoff matches by a combined score of 32-1 (it would have been even worse as one of the matches was a forfeit), and because Greeneville returns 10 of last year's 11 starters :hungry: the powers to be combined the district and regional playoffs into 4 matches. Note: Greeneville won their first match 13-0 last night. :thumb:

  9. Greeneville 13  Cumberland Gap 0

Before the score board "nazis" go wild, Devil starters were taken out after 10-12 minutes when score was 8-0. Second and third teams finished match. Doesn't make sense to play these tyoes of matches, but what can you do?

  10. Pretty sure that most/all? of these seniors have been playing DI club ball for the Greeneville club too. Is that good scoop, scoop? I saw Greeneville play earlier in the year at Bearden tournament and they are legit. Big G's pick of them to be a strong state contender is really not "going out on a limb". For all of those who have whined about the public-private school gap in 2A, Greeneville will be your team to watch.

4 of 11 did not play club ball.:blush:

  11. What?!

Wow, I have to see this Greeneville team in action. They are having a historic year for a Greeneville team, based on the scores I've seen. I know they have a big name coach over there in John Eiskamp, but their results still surprise me a bit. How often do we see a A/AA from somewhere besides a big city (Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Chatanooga) do this well? Being from East TN, I will be rooting for them to win it all. Good Luck Greeneville!

Just out of curiosity, is this team full of seniors?

    Start 11 seniors. :thumb:

If not for some idiotic rule <_< by district/regional "administrators" that limits all region selections to 4, there would easily be 7 or 8 All Region Players.

  12. Greeneville 3 :thumb:

    Maryville 2 :|

Well played match in miserable conditions - lots of rain - two quality teams - both should fair well in their respective divisions come playoff time. Hope MHS's #6 is not seriously injured - she can flat move down the field. Greeneville was without one of their best defenders - her status is unknown going into tournament time.

  13. Greeneville 7

    Powell 1

Match would have been much closer but Powell goalie hurt on Greeneville's initial goal - out rest of match - 3/4 followon goals would likely not have been scored. Otherwise well played match - Greeneville gearing up for post season! :thumb:

  14. Farragut 3 Greeneville 2 :angry::angry:

Greeneville definitely missed their All-State Goalie who is out for 6 weeks due to foot injury. :( Sophomore sub did more than adequate job - FHS just kept up the attack – first two goals showed lack of experience on part of GHS goalie; last goal would have been difficult for ANY goalie to stop – an extremely well executed play resulting in a close-in header for the winning score with approximately 3 minutes remaining. GHS couldn't get their passing game going. Great goal by #6 immediately after FHS had taken a 2-0 lead and had definite momentum in their favor – picked GHS up and they played hard remainder of match. Final GHS score on an awesome header by #25. :thumb:
