  1. All games from here on out at Hardin Valley, unless weather issues force them elsewhere:

    Monday:

    5 Clinton/AC

    7:30 Karns/OR

Both of those are elimination games

    Tuesday:

5 Winners of the 2 Monday games in an elimination game

7:30 Powell/HVA in the winner's bracket finals, winner moves on to the championship round and is guaranteed a region spot

    Wednesday:

5 Winner of the Tuesday elimination game vs. loser of the Powell/HVA game

7:30 Championship round: Winner of the Tuesday 7:30 game vs. the winner of the Wednesday 5 PM game

    Thursday:

6 PM The two teams from the Wednesday's 7:30 game, if necessary

One of the Oak Ridge coaches told me that they play A.C. Monday.

Not sure, but I think that might be right because A.C. won and O.R. lost on Friday, and usually that's the case. You might check that.

  2. Blame "Travel Ball" on the current lack of hometown pride. I feel like travel ball has turned kids into the equivalent of mercenaries and nothing more. Kids play on a new team every season or even week if the parents don't like the coach.

I don't know these kids who left to go play in the private sector, but I would bet "christian-based" values didn't have as much to with the decision as baseball. Even then, if you're concerned about your kid being the best player they can be, would you rather face HVA, Powell, Halls, FHS, ect or Midway, Harriman, and Tellico Plains?

I guess going 10-0 in a district where your biggest foe is Rockwood is a lot more fun than grinding it out in AAA ball. Less competition equals better stats, I guess. It's a shame. I remember when the saying was, "to be the man, you have to beat the man."

Makes no sense to me at all, but then again my kid what taught hometown pride and couldn't wait to dawn his towns colors. I'm afraid that's a dying trait now-a-days.

Great post! I'm just not sure that "travel ball" is as much to blame for it as the parents are. I think you can find a good balance between the two if you use some common sense. The problem is when the parents are engulfed by it and don't let it be their kid's time.

Halls lost a ton of seniors last year but Doug is a great coach. I promise they will be competitive.

  3. Actually what Francis was hearing was the Powell defense simulating the snap count all night. That;s why West had so many penalties on offense that prevented them from ever getting on track. The refs finally called it iate in the game, but it was way too late, then they kept on doing it. If anybody doesn't believe that was exactly what was going on, then go ask your own coach. I talked to Derek Rang himself about that at length after last years game. Remember,he was on West sidleline for that one, Go ahead, ask him.

Well what will the excuse be this year?
  4. I'm sure things will be a lot different this time around, but they couldn't do anything out of the veer against Powell last year. Here's hoping that Powell's front seven can get in the backfield like they did last year.

Last year, Powell LB Colby Skeen drilled the West QB in the back on the first play of the game and it seemed like it set the tone for the entire game. It looked like Francis heard footsteps for quite a while after that. The Panther defense was relentless that entire game. If Devin Scott, Sharron Moore, and the rest of the defensive front can apply that kind of pressure Friday, it will be a long night for the Rebels.

    Go Panthers!

  5. t spoon where are the players u listed as area players playing college ball at ?

These are only the ones that I know of:

Wil Crowe (Pigeon Forge) South Carolina, Andrew Lee (Morristown West) Tennessee, Trey York (Bearden) ETSU, A.J. Simcox (Farragut) Tennessee, Colby Skeen (Powell) Walters State, Grant Painter (Halls) Walters State, Ronnie Broyles (Bearden) Walters State, Nick Senzel (Farragut) Georgia, and Jake Farr (Jefferson County) Walters State.

  6. From this morning's Knoxville News Sentinel:

Coaches' Picks: The Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association (TBCA) selected a combined 13 players from the PrepXtra coverage area to its all-state teams. The TBCA released a first team and second team, which were all-inclusive for the state's classifications.

Area players making first team were Wil Crowe (Pigeon Forge), Andrew Lee (Morristown West), Colton Bales (Jefferson County), Jake Johnson (Sequoyah), Trey York (Bearden), A.J. Simcox (Farragut), Colby Skeen (Powell) and Ben Whisler (Seymour).

PrepXtra players making second-team all state were Grant Painter (Halls), Ronnie Broyles (Bearden), Isaac Allen (Rockwood), Nick Senzel (Farragut) and Jake Farr (Jefferson County).

    Congrats to all!

  7. Powell could certainly win it all, but I dont think they will. They can go in the tank in a hurry as evidenced by being run ruled several times this season. Championship teams rarely have so many embarrassing losses. Their defense and maybe mental side of game may be their downfall. They are however a momentum team and if they get hot look out.

Halls is playing well lately and with the emergence of Gallion giving them another solid pitching option. Corccione has been pitching well and Painter always performs. Gallion pitched 9 innings against a good Science Hill team. Halla won in 11th on as Austin Smith hit a game tying HR then later a game winning walk off HR.

I would consider Halls the favorite. They have had several players develop this year. At the start of the season, I would said Powell definately had the most talent and now Im not sure they do.

Hardin Valley will be Hardinn Valley. They have less overall starting talent than Powell and Halls, but plenty of talent to beat anyone. They have the ability to win at any time, but I dont see the pitching to get them though like last year. I like their offensive firepower, running game and solid defense. If they get the 3 seed, dont see them going far. They definately need to beat powell monday.

Oak Ridge has some nice young talent and Lane is throwing great. The biggest issue for them is they have only 1 Lane and they need at least 2. They have good arms developing but they arent as seasoned reliable as some of the other teams. Oak Ridge plays hard all the time. They have enough talent to make some noise and I am sure they will give maximun effort. They will be a serious contender for first next year, But not this year.

Not sure what to say about AC. They have Durand and I believe Tackett can pitch now. If that is correct, they will have a chance to make some noise. Their defense will be their downfall. They have some nice talentb but much of it has not stepped up this year. They have enough top end talent to win any ONE game. I just dont see enough defense and consistency to take the tournament.

Clinton will not have a chance to contend, but I do want to give them a plug. Two years ago, I thought this team would be beyond horrible this year. They have obviously coached, worked and developed players. You can tell that some effort was expended by everyone involved. My hat is off to the Clinton baseball program and the scrappy team they fielded this year.

FYI....While I agree with almost your entire post, Powell has only been run-ruled once this season.

However, they did go in the tank in a hurry that game.

    Great post! :thumb:

I agree that Halls is the favorite. They are playing good ball right now. Great win against Science Hill Friday night. Big game coming up for Powell and HVA Monday night. Should be a great tournament!

  9. This is what I gather so far, from the information I've been given. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Tournamant starts Friday, May 4th

#1 Halls will host #8 (most likely Campbell Co.)

#4 Oak Ridge vs #5 Clinton

#2 Winner of Powell/HVA will host #7 Karns

    #3 Loser of Powell/HVA vs #6 A.C.

After the first 2 days, the remainder of the tournament will be at Halls.

  10. Halls clinched the #1 seed tonight by defeating Karns.

Powell and HVA will finish their rained-out game Mon at 7 (tied 0-0 top of 4) Winner of that game is #2 seed and loser is #3 seed.

Oak Ridge looks to be the #4 seed.

Clinton defeated A.C. tonight so they are the #5 seed.

    A.C. is the #6 seed.

I think Karns is the #7 seed.

I think Campbell Co. is the #8 seed.

In the Powell/HVA game so far:

    D. Owenby has given up 1 hit. HVA tried to squeeze home a run but the runner was out at the plate.

Wiler has given up 3 hits. Powell has left 5 men on base so far. Skeen has 2 Doubles and been left on both times, and they left bases loaded in the 2nd.

  11. Does anyone know who hit the grand slam for HVA? Just curious.

I know Ledbetter had 3 hits including a HR and 2 RBIs for Powell, and Skeen had 2 Triples and a Double with 4 RBIs.

I am almost positive it was HVAs 3RD Baseman. Fielden maybe?

  12. I think the top 3 for seeding will be #1-Halls, #2-Powell, #3-HVA. I think Halls will sweep this week, and having swept Powell, finish ahead of them. Powell and HVA will split if Drake is on his game, and could sweep HVA if they keep their composure under the HVA onslaught of small-ball. With a split, that would put them both at 13-3, and not sure what the tie-breaker would be to determine #2 or #3.

If Oak Ridge sweeps Campbell Co. and loses to Halls, then that puts them at 10-6 and in #4 seed. AC and Clinton play this week; AC has to sweep Clinton to get #5, and I don't thonk they can. Thus, I think 5-8 will be Clinton, AC, Karns, and Campbell Co.

Powell defeated HVA 11-7 tonight. Hagen Owenby pitched 6 good innings and led 11-1 going in to the 7th. Hagen got a little tired and gave up some runs including a grand slam in the 7th before Colby Skeen came in and closed.

Will OR pitch Lane against Halls on 3 days rest?

  13. Anyone have an up to date standings please post it.

    Standings:

Powell................12-2(plays HVA 2 times this week)

Halls...................11-2(plays OR once and Karns twice this week)

    HVA....................2 losses(plays Powell 2 times this week)

O.R.....................5 losses(still has Halls to play)

    A.C.....................?

    Clinton...............?(playing better)

    Karns.................?

    Campbell Co......?

    Central...............?

I think Powell, Halls, and HVA are 1,2, and 3. Order TBD this week.

    OR probably 4th.

Not sure between AC and Clinton about 5 and 6.

    Karns probably 7th.

    Campbell Co. probably 8th.

  14. I have read HVA4LIFE's posts and have even heard them referenced out at some ballfields during district play. No way this poster speaks for the HVA program. I am not sure if the poster is a comedian, a kid playing games, or someone outside the HVA program trying to stir up some bulletin board material. I have never heard a player or a fan within the HVA program speak with this type of disrespect for any opponent. I have ignored the previous posts that are equally as stupid and I hope, by responding, I haven't dignified the poster's comments. This message board goes out across the state and some good natured talk between rivals is a great thing to do. But HVA4LIFE's posts makes the district look silly if we all take the bait. TSpoon started a real discussion thread for the Halls - Powell games this week. Maybe he can do another one for HVA- Powell next week and we can all respond to that one. It should be a great week of baseball.

I was going to start a Powell/HVA thread, but after reading all the garbage and disrespect on here from a couple of HVA fans, I decided against it.

    Sorry <_<

  15. Wow, what a game if you like pitching! Lane for Oak Ridge and D. Owenby and Skeen for Powell were awesome last night. Had the gun out on Lane and Owenby in first inning; Lane hit 88mph, and Owenby 89mph. I'm certain each of them touched 90 as the game went on and the adrenaline was pumping. I think both starters gave up two hits, including lead-off triples. The difference was Oak Ridge's lead-off triple came from their #5 hitter, and Owenby had an easier path to get out of trouble than Lane, whose lead-off triple was given up to the younger Owenby as their #1 hitter (who scored on a sacrifice fly). Fantastic game by all the pitchers involved. Owenby is definitely gonna see action early on at UT with that level of pitching, and likely an MLB draft pick for late rounds if he puts his name in that hat; 90mph and lefty is a rarity. Lane has more than a half-dozen D1 schools looking at him seriously now; with more performances like that against quality teams like Powell, he could get some serious looks from SEC schools as well, especially being a young (won't be 17 'til late May) Junior and another Summer of showcase ball coming up for him. I would love to see this match-up again at district tournament, but it will take some work for Oak Ridge to get there being a lower seed (likely #4 seed).

I was very impressed with Jordan Lane (Oak Ridge) the other night. He went all 7 innings and held Powell to 1 run on 3 hits and had 9 Ks. He kept the Panthers off balance all night long. Powell got the much needed win 1-0 behind the pitching of Drake Owenby (5IP, 2 hits, 9 Ks) and Colby Skeen (2 IP, 0 hits, 4 Ks). That was the first time I have had the chance to see Lane pitch. It will be a tough draw to have to play Oak Ridge first round of the 3AAA tourney.
