  1. Just an idea! That would be cool if they installed black field turf in the black hole! Kinda like a few of the colleges have their turf like their school colors! :thumb:

That is a good idea and would look pretty cool with the Black Hole name. Sure would beat the blue turf at Boise State.

  2. Maryville could play in a mud pit and still whip who ever they are playing! Best to leave well enough alone! LOL! :thumb:

That is kind of my point warhawks. Not that it matters to any of us because we Middle Tn folks only play on it one time per year if we are lucky. I would have thought that a program as good as thiers deserved to play on a better home field each week. When you win as many state championships as they have in any sport or school I would expect the facilites to be a reflection of that success. Stadium is pretty nice and I like the whole Black Hole thing. Field not so much. Just my opinion which in the big scheme of things means nothing.

  3. Fun game to watch for 2 quarters if you are from Middle Tn. Things got out of hand pretty quickly after half time. I am beating that some people got back to thier seats from the bathroom line and had to ask what the heck just happened. I guess that all of us Middle Tn folks would like to think it would have been a better game if the starting QB was playing but not sure it really would have mattered. The result would still have been a butt kicking. Been a good week of talks on this thread and both teams represented thier schools and communities well. No need to start taking jabs now about things that don't really matter. Middle Tn takes a knee when someone gets hurt and east does not so enough about that. The hit on the kid happened in front of me and was not dirty just cleaned his plow so enough about that. Bands play during snaps and are part of the game. Had several arguements about this in the past because I am old school and don't like it but I guess it is part of high school football now so we just have to deal with it so enough about that. This new rivalry is what football should be about so don't get off track now. Team played thier hearts out and respectful on both sides. Coaches and fans were great on both sides. If there is anything to make you scratch your head it would be the field. Not the stadium as I kind of like the being so close part but the playing surface. It did not effect the result of the game but I would have thought a program with as much success as yours would have a better field. Good luck next week and hope to see one of the Rutherford county teams play you again next year.

  4. WE must have attended different games. I heard NO ONE boo ANY players during the awards announcements. Perhaps it was because I was applauding and cheering too loudly myself. Also, ALL the Blackman supporters around me cheered and applauded for EVERY player announced. I don't care if you agree with me or not. And would not consider you "uncreditable" [sic] simply for disagreeing with me. However, I know what I did and did not hear. I heard NO boos during the awards announcements and so far, you are the only one that has said they did.

And I think I'm respectfully ready to call B.S. on your claim of "nonpartisan".

I know what I have heard. And I know what I have observed. And I'm not taking anyone's word for it. It is a first hand experience.

With that said, I really don't care. I have just related what I have seen and heard. NOT what I have been told. I suspect you are attached to RD in some way. If so, I would think you would want better from such visible representatives of your school, your team, and Middle Tennessee Girl's Basketball. If not, then that speaks for itself and pretty much proves my point.

Read who is writing the posts. We are 2 different people not the same. That makes 2 people that heards boos and everyone sitting around me from both Blackman and Riverdale heard the same thing. The other poster is right that the SRO officers went over to student section after 2nd booing started and stopped it. YOu should see some of the things written on that dry earse board and the students have, pretty offensive at times. I have been a Rutherford County fan for years and have rooted for all County teams. After being a bystander reading the posters on all sports for coach t I have a knew rule....ABB + Anyone But Blackman.

  5. I was referring to the "Nah, nah, hey, hey, good bye" chant/song they gave the Duke girl when she fouled out. As I said, no class. Where was their supervision? Or was the Coach up there singing with them? If they are not involved in the game, why would they want to sit there and make fun of another player's misfortune? Do you approve of that kind of behavior?

Anyway, I just felt it was a horrible show of sportsmanship and a lack of class. I would like to think most would disapprove. But when the star player's mother is following kids from the other team around threatening them......... You know, the same lady on a comment thread in the local paper threatening other commenters....... Well...you've heard about the apple falling far from the tree?

They are obviously a talented group of girls. And you are a dedicated fan. But why tarnish their accomplishments with behavior like that?

Pretty much tried to stay out of this because I don't have a dog in the hunt. I just love Rutherford County and hope they all win. BUT....This is getting pretty stupid. I was at almost all Blackman / Riverdale games to see good basketball. I was at the district championship game...Riverdale girls WERE booed when thier names were called out. DOn't say it did not happen because it did and I was there. During the Regional game the student section from Blackman was no better than the one from Riverdale. Who was sitting in the student section parenting those kids????? Do I agree with the chant and other stuff that goes on,no, but before people shoot arrows they may want to pay closer attention to what goes on in thier own stands. I sat behind both coaches at different game and guess what, niether one was better than the other. In fact as a non partisan fan the Blackman coach was far worse. Want to go after the ADULT coaches then go right ahead but grow up and leave the kids alone. Both have good players, both have good fans, and BOTH have fans that cross the lines. To call a group of teenage girls and an entire school classless, might want to take a better look around before throwing rocks at KIDS.

  6. ENOUGH already!

We all gave Blackman heck for scheduling a bunch of creampuffs in the beginning of the season. Right? The Blaze fans screeched that Coach Shad wasn't responsible for making that schedule and got their feathers ruffled like crazy. Oakland played a pretty stellar non-region schedule and prevailed BUT we are home cleaning out lockers. Now you guys that were complaining the most about getting picked on are jumping on Riverdale for getting to go west. They didn't set their schedule.....thank the TSSAA for that. Bottom line is......having an easier road for the Blaze helped to get their confidence level high as a kite so they could continue to march onward. It is doing the EXACT same thing for a VERY young Riverdale team. You saw firsthand how that worked for the Blaze, so you best realize it MIGHT just do the same thing for the Warriors. IF it ends up being a RC state championship game, you have given the Warriors tons and tons of bulletin board fodder.

Now, I am rooting for all the Boro teams to keep representing our little town in the playoffs. One is going to clean out their lockers after Friday night. Hopefully there will still be two from the Boro that play in the semis the next week. I am rooting for that to happen. I don't care what the past was OR who they had to play to get to the point where they are. The main point is that they represent our district and we should all band together and cheer them ALL the rest of the way.

Don't whine when no one is supporting YOUR team if you aren't willing to support THEIRS! I know b/c I have learned this the hard way in the past. Go Dawgs, Go Blaze, and Go Warriors!

This might be one of the best posts of the year!! Good job!

  7. Pictures of your really good gloves?

There is a daddy on a team I know that takes really good pictures. He is not a freshman dad though so might not go with this thread and need a new one. This team also has some A2000 golves on it. They are not the better A2K or as good as Rawlings Pro Preferred but still pretty good gloves.

  8. No need to start throwing daggers as this was a great high school football game. If you think otherwise then you don't know much about football anyway. Emotional ups and downs. Very impressed with class both at the game and on coach t from players, coaches and fans. Overall this matchup was an example of how a good hard game should play out both on and off the field. This is why football is so good and fun to watch in 7AAA. Only one question I have and does not require a lot of reponses or any at all but what the heck is the deal with the Blackman band. Not just me and not just this game cause people from both sides of the ball at all schools have said they border line unsportsman like and take the attention away from a really good football team. Good luck to all 7AAA teams. Too bad 3 of them have to fight with each other to get there.

  9. Here is the rule on Dead Period from the TSSAA by-laws.

In my opinion, "no open facilities" means facilities are "closed" for student use.

But you can decide for yourself....

Dead Period – No coaching, observing, or contact between coach and players in sport involved. There is no practice, no open facilities, and no weight training / conditioning.

Open Facilities Schools may use their facilities for students in their building prior to or at the conclusion of the school day. Coaches may serve in a supervisory capacity only. There is no instruction, no teaching, no coaching, etc. Coaches may not participate or play in any manner. It is a free play type atmosphere.

So if a "summer team" is playing games on a high school field with someone coaching other than the high school coach does that break the rule or not?

  10. Here's the deal on the IB program...and trust me on this...I have a son in the IB program, he plays baseball, and he attends the school he's zoned for.

The IB program starts the freshman year. Each class is designed to lead into the junior year when IB-specific classes start. Think of it as attending college. While your junior & senior year consisted mostly of classes that were directly related to your major - or degree - the freshman & sophomore classes were courses of basic study that satisfied degree requirements. The IB program is similar to this. Every class taken has a purpose and is designed to meet requirements both for the IB program and the state of Tennessee.

And, don't confuse magnet schools with the IB program. Magnet schools may emphasize math or science, while IB program includes all areas of study as well as a community service requirement, creative (or arts) emphasis, and an activity requirement (which a sport would satisfy). During the senior year, a significant research paper is completed and sent away to be approved by the IB program. Basically, it's a more intense and rigorous course of study -very much like college. A majority of colleges recognize the IB diploma, which translates into significant scholarship monies.

In other words, if a student finishes the IB program, he can pretty much choose the college he wants to attend, i.e., Harvard, Vanderbilt, etc.

So, I ask you...if a parent has a child who is an advanced student going into 9th grade, would you not give them the option to excel in academics with the opportunity to go on to a well-respected university?

From what I see and hear, the kids going into the IB program in Rutherford County are doing it because of academics...not as a loophole to play baseball. Why is there no one complaining about kids who play soccer, golf, basketball or football?

Digger...Bottom line...quit your whining. Creating rumors, questioning character, and attacking programs is pathetic and immature. You should be happy that the IB program exists in Rutherford County for the opportunity it gives our kids as well as making our community an attractive place to live. It is what it is. If a kid wants to get an exceptional education and play a sport while doing it, then he/she has every right to do it.

Well - I was not trying to get personal but I am just asking questions that I have been hearing at SEVERAL baseball fields around the state this year. This has been talked about every football season so just thought I would ask what everyone else is asking. Here is a hypothetical and give me your honest answer. let's say your son and 4 other 8th graders zoned for Blackman (1), Oakland (2) and LaVergne (1) and they want to get better in football and the assistant football coach at Riverdale is teaching them tackling drills over at Riverdale and likes what he sees and says to each individual, "Why don't you come to Riverdale". Each boy and the parents like this guy but are not sure how they can get in to Riverdale but find out thru the IB program they can get in. Do you think that is illegal what the assistant coach said to the 8th graders according to Rule 3 in the TSSAA handbook?

I don't know if it is or not but have heard lot's of opinions on it.

One more question. Since you are doing everything legal I commend you for making good decisions for your child and you are zoned for that school. If a player not zoned for that school takes playing time from your son and drops out of IB classes or never really intends to take them to begin with does that make you mad?

Good job on your part for being a good parent and I really hope that all have the same motivations in mind or the questions at ALL the fields will continued to be asked.

  11. Actually it is not a TSSAA problem. It is an ethics problem at the school that allows it to happen. The TSSAA is a self-governing body. That means that we as educators have to decide if what we do is right or wrong. There are some that do wrong and can live with it. That is a sad indication of who runs those schools. :thumb:

Good post. There are some TSSAA rules that probably cover this and it is a fine line if they are being followed. Look especially at rule #3. There are a few questions that I keep hearing people talk about and I don't really know the answers but they seem like fair questions. How do 8th grades know about an academic program that starts in the 11th grade? If it is really about academics then why do they not go to a magnet school like the one that just opened in Rutherford County? How many kids in these schools that are open enrollment or IB programs are playing sports when zoned for other schools? What percentage of the players at these schools are not zoned for the school versus are zoned?

    A. Examples of influence for athletic purposes may include, but are not limited to:

    1. Offers of or acceptance of any special privileges not afforded to other students, whether athletes

    or not.

    2. Offers of financial aid based on need to any prospective student-athlete by any member of the

coaching staff. All financial aid questions should be referred to the principal or person in charge

    of financial aid.

    3. Inducing or attempting to induce or encourage any prospective student-athlete to attend any

member school for the purpose of participating in athletics even when the special remuneration or

    inducement is not given.

  12. IB is divided into three sections. PYP for grades 1 - 5. MYP is for grades 6 - 10. And the DP program is for grades 11 - 12. If a parent has an opportunity to place their kids in the Diploma Program I would highly recommend it. The requirements and expectations of a DP student are extremely high and to suggest players are transferring to these schools for athletic purposes is highly suspect.

You don't think coaches get the word out to athletes they know about that are zoned to another school but tell them about the IB progarm as a way to come to that school.

  13. What exactly is an IB program for? If you don't start taking IB classes until the junior year of high school then why do kids go to that school as freshman and not juniors?

Stands for International Baccalaureatte. It is a program that attempts to meet international standards for education and a school can be an IB school and also offer IB courses much like AP courses. While you may not take the classes as a junior, class structure and preparation in lower level classes are designed for those classes. The school I was at in N.C. was an IB school. You can get more information at http://www.ibo.org/

By the way. Did your school in NC take advantage to let athletes know about the program?

  14. What exactly is an IB program for? If you don't start taking IB classes until the junior year of high school then why do kids go to that school as freshman and not juniors?

OK thanks. Just wondering because there sure seems to be lot's of talk about how that is used to get kids to playing sports out of thier zoned school so just wondering what the heck it is.

  15. After licking the wounds from the worst beating over past 15-20 years I wanted to say "thank you to the Maryville football community & program" because of the "class" in which you showed. In the last 20 years any team that has won against these Warriors has done belly slides and acted like a middle school team that just pulled the upset of the century. I guess when a school is as sucessful as Riverdale was durring the Rankin days it creates tons of haters. IMO our team failed to play at the level needed to beat MHS on both sides of the ball which allowed the blow out in the 1st quarter. I credit the 3 fumbles to MHS def. and going after the ball like a hungy def. should. GQ knew the odds of a wing-t coming back in the 2nd half from a 21 point lead. I really thought the only way Riverdale could win this one on the road would be 1. Control the clock with the run game. 2. Put pressure on qb and survive the trick plays. If you saw the game then you kind of felt "sick" after the first quarter because you new neither would be the case for the Warriors on this Friday night. Thats life lesson 101(some days the bug, some days the windsheild) and for the seniors (majority), life after football began when the last second left the clock in the "black hole" and you have no choice now but to hold your head high and move forward. You men(seniors) made everyone who follows football at RHS very proud! I wish you all the best and again say "Thank you". UNTIL NEXT YR

No dog in the hunt other than I live in Rutherford County and root for all Rutherford County teams to do well. Having watched all teams play over the past many many years I can tell you that this group of seniors for Riverdale were excellent leaders and the team played with as much heart and class as any team i have seen in a long time. I hope the younger ones took notes on how to continue that level of leadership. It starts with coaches and parents which tells me regardless of his offense he develops young men. Keep your heads high for representing this county well and especially in the important stuff.

As for Maryville, i did not go to the game but talked to many that did and read this blog often. Everyone said that with the exception of the score it was a good time and good people. Some of the posters here seem to still have a chip on thier shoulder even when they are trying to be complemented. How about this, your team was better, your coach was better, your colors were better, your signs were better, your stadium was better and the scoreboard was better than any in Rutherford County. There do you feel ok now? Geez. The poster that brought up the cheerleaders and took a shot at them shows what a small person they are. You have a good football team and have the success to show for it. Most of the state can't stand Farragut baseball. Not because they are good or because they have had success but because they have some fans that are so obnoxious that the entire program suffers from it. Like it or not fans become a reflection of thier programs and community. You are good and from what people told me at the game a class act. Don't forget the real win here is to use sports as a tool to develop young men. Sounds like your coach and coach a got that figured out. There are good and bad at just about every program. Go win another ball for your trophy case and keep developing young men for life after football because lord knows this country needs them.

  16. For those equating this years R'dale team with teams of old, I can only say one thing. Gary Rankin. Y'all do remember him I hope. The match up of both schools 2004 teams would have been a classic.

I will also say I think Maryville will take home the very first 6A Gold Ball next week. The best team for this year won last night.

The plain fact that most do not like to face is we got out played and out coached yesterday. It also hurt that we do not see passing teams like Maryville as most teams here are primarily run orientated. That is why the wingT works here but still has NOT won the Gold Ball in this state.

Maryville, yet once again you have won the respect of some here in Middle Tn. Now go out there next week and win it ALL!

Might be a whole other thread but it will be tough to ever go all the way with the wing t. The wishbone was the spread offense of my day (shows you how old I am) but now you never see it except on old high light films. There is a reason for that, it does not work anymore. Most kids probably never even heard of the wishbone. The wing t is outdated and will make it tough to win a gold ball for whoever runs it at this level.

  17. I appreciate the messages of sportsmanship in the previous post-game post, but why was Riverdale's coach throwing for touchdowns, 2 point conversions, and onside kicks in the fourth quarter against Maryville's subs when he stated that the game was over at the end of the third quarter?

Did he have money on the game or does he get paid by the margin of vctory (or loss!). At least George Quarles subs know they get a little playoff playing time when the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt...

Not sure what your point is here? Would you prefer that a team keeping fighting and trying to never give up to build character in a bunch of teenage boys or just say Pack it up boys and let's just take a knee? Sometimes it is more than just about winning and losing. It is about preparing young men for life after football and showing that you don't give up on your team, yourself, and your community.

  18. FYI...riverdaleman does not mean a word of the above post...i hate to throw him under the bus because i have grown to love and appreciate him over the last few years and i even fed him some chilli before the riverdale vs. blackman game...and to prove my point here is a copy of the text he just sent me... "RIVERDALE WILL SMOKE MURYVILLE, THE DALE BY 20 AT LEAST, THE FORMER 4A BOYS WILL FIND OUT WHAT IT IS LIKE TO PLAY THE BIG BOYS FROM THE BORO"

dont get mad at me...i'm just the messenger

    PBD :D

Dissapointing that a Blackman fan is getting on this site trying to stir up trouble when all posts until now have been respectful on both sides. Nice job supporting your county - regarless of how many texts you got and what they said. You are not playing so if you want to just stir things up between what has been a classy and respectful thread then go someplace else.

  19. How refreshing to see two outstanding, successful, and classy football programs having such mutual respect for each other. I expect a great game between these two teams and a lot of good sportsmanship from players and fans alike. The stadium will be packed with Maryville and Riverdale supporters and a whole bunch of other football fans. It will also be very loud...on both sides. Can't wait for what may become an annual Thanksgiving treat!!!

I could not agree with this statement more. Good to see programs that understand they are building the foundation for young men way past football playing days. This should be a great high school game.
