  1. Wasn't the young man injured last week?

I heard from some people who were there that the "injury" last week was a mysterious one that appeared only after he was benched by the head coach for the 2nd half of the game after committing a personal foul.

After halftime, he was sitting on the bench when the coach told him that only players who were going to play could sit on the bench and that, since he was not going to play, he would have to go to another area on the sideline. At that point, he got up from the bench, took off his pads, and told the trainer that his shoulder was sore and that he needed to have ice applied to it.

  6. What's everyones thoughts and predictions on the game? A buddy and I are trying to find a competitive and good game every week to go to. Would this be a game worth attending?

MBA defense has 2 shutouts and EHS did not show much O vs Oakland.

MBA offense has not been very impressive in 1st 2 games.

I wouldn't go if you want to see a high-scoring affair but it should be a hard-fought game.

EHS has to be doubly smarting after their playoff loss to MBA last year and after the opening loss to Oakland. They had high hopes to compete for the title last year. Both teams are playing a lot of inexperienced players.

Has anyone heard if Antonio recovered during the week off? Did EHS make any changes to stimulate their offense?

I think that MBA was somewhat intimidated by EHS until the playoff victory last year. They are much more confident this year.

  7. Coach Counce left to join his father's staff when he was re-named heach coach at Henry County. Obviously, the son, Caleb, went with him. Not sure what happened with the receiver.

I know Caleb was very upset that he had to leave MBA and I think there was more to it than just going to play for his granddad. From what I have heard, some personality conflicts between coaches had a major role in the Counce's departure.

It came at a very tough time for Caleb.

  8. Yes Reigle is a really solid player. He has been starting as the strong safety since his sophomore year. I have also heard Lucachi is good too. I am told he has some D-1 interest as a nose tackle. The two linebackers are Juniors John Morphis and James Kay. I think Morphis is about 6' 185, while Kay is a much stockier 5'10 and listed at 215, although in the scrimmaged I attended he looked more about 220. Kay started last year and I think was 2nd on the team in tackles. I saw Jhamall Wright was a preseason all state selection how did he do?

Reigle and Kay are definitely the leaders on defense.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is that MBA is starting the season without 3 seniors and 1 junior who were expected to be major contributors this year. Chase Pruett played a lot at wideout last year but decided not to come out his year. Connor Pagnani signed a lacrosse scholarship and is focusing on lacrosse instead of football. He is 6'4 or something and played a fair amount on D last year. Zemel Shropshire was the 2nd team LB last year but is no longer at school.

The junior was Caleb Counce who left when he dad left the coaching staff (suddenly) after spring practice. Caleb played some TE last year and figured to play on both sides of the ball this year.

The loss of these players opened up the door for some of the younger guys like Morphis and the freshmen.

  9. Game #1 is in the books as the Patriots exacted a little revenge tonight on Ensworth, winning 20-7. Really solid on both sides of the ball in the first half as Oakland held Ensworth to -5 yards total offense in the first half while coming up with 164 yards of total offense. The Oakland defense was aided by good special teams play and the horrific play of the Ensworth offense in the first half, who had 2 snaps sail over the Qb's head, with one almost ending up a safety.

Ensworth was able to hurt Oakland a little on the ground early, but Oakland was able to tighten up to seal the win. Offense had a few chances to put this game out of reach and wasnt able to capitalize, but also give credit to Ensworth, they fought hard to get back into the game and have a solid defense. For all talk of a balanced offense, it was once again the ground game that ruled the day. Really solid win considering it was against a solid opponent and with it being the first game of the season.............

Any more details on this game?

  10. Just saw this final. Any details on the game from anyone?

    From the Oakland message board:

  11. MBA beat Carmel and Collegiate. Anyone have any info on their Trinity game?

Trinity: Lost 8-6. The guys said that they played horribly. Cold and tired after the bus trip. Had 30 turnovers. More turnovers than shots. Connor P had a hat trick and team stayed in the game until the end but could not rally. They said Trinity was hungry and energetic and celebrated like they had won the national championship after the game.

Collegiate: Won 10-9. Another lackluster effort but had a 4 goal lead late in the 4th until Collegiate rallied. After a cold night, it was hot on Saturday in Louisville and the guys got gassed at the end. Again, Collegiate seemed really up for the game and knocking off MBA seemed to be a big potential feather in their caps.

Carmel: 13-6 (I think) 3rd game in 2 1/2 days for MBA, but it was a rout in their favor. Clay A had 5-6 goals. Carmel was man-up the whole 4th period against the 2nd defense and scored 3 or 4 goals at the end to make it look closer than it was.

  12. I am pretty sure that the MBA players who were recruits spent almost every weekend this summer at one camp or another. I think they also went to some camps in the fall.

It is amazing that Connor and Clay have already committed before they even have played any of their junior years. Our best football players dd not know where they were going to college until February of their senior years. They did not get offers until the last week before signing day.

  13. I heard MBA got back from Chattanooga at midnight. Guys were tired. They won the scrimmage against McCallie. Not sure of the score.

St X is 2-time defending state champ in KY.

I thought MBA's looked very solid. Midfield line of Curtis, Pagnani and Adams is going to be awesome. Near misses galore or this one could have been a blowout.

Charpentier is a nice addition at Attack.

  14. Go Big Red! Congrats for another gutsy performance. These seniors have done a great job of leading when it counts. They'll face their biggest challenge of the year when the face MUS in the State Championship. They'll be playing for their 14th state championship, having made the game 7 times in recent memory, winning 6. Not bad for a school where the students don't care about football.

Talk about missing my point completely...

Be quiet, Bradley. We all have known you since pre-K. You comments about racism are patently ridiculous and you know it.

When rivals pays you enough to put food on your parents table, we will be impressed. Until then, you are a wannabe, never-was, can't-do-it-so-I-write-about-it poster boy. The typical type of person who goes into journalism and then pulls out an emotional tool like the "race card" when things don't go their way.

    Grow up.

  15. KW:

Agree with your comments about EHS going for it at their own 30 with a 14 point lead early in the third quarter. I felt like that was the turning point of the game. There was no apparent reason for doing it. MBA's offense was struggling. Their lone touchdown in the first half came off a wildcat formation with Lassing take a direct snap. Everyone thought run and Tanner got behind an EHS defense that bit on the run for a long TD. MBA's defense was hitting hard but having a tough time containing Darkwa. He dominated in the first half. The MBA defense and sideline were happy to have stopped EHS from converting on third down. At that point, even with the short the yardage, a punt was in order. There was no reason to fear turning the ball over to the MBA offense, unless your punter was hurt. Based on the game at that point, the risk of giving MBA a short field if you don't make it was far greater than giving them back the ball and having them drive from their own territory. Field position was what mattered at that point. Those of us standing on the patio behind the end zone where that series of plays took place were all saying surely they won't go for it, they are just going to try to bait MBA into jumping offsides. Darkwa tried to go over the top, but MBA cut his legs out from under and MBA got the ball. You could feel the excitement going through their team when they stopped EHS.

With a short field, MBA scored. Kudos to MBA's wide receiver Mobeley who made a pro-like catch for the touchdown right in front of us, keeping both feet in bounds on a dime and catching a ball that looked like it might intended to a receiver in front of him but over thrown. And I think this was shortly after an EHS defensive back had turned out his front porch light on an incomplete pass over the middle with a beautiful hard but clean hit. As Dandy Don used to say on MNF, Old Mo' had just switched sides. MBA's defense came out really fired up after the kickoff, caused a fumble on a pitch to Darkwa, recovered the fumble ( kudos to the MBA kid who jumped on Darkwa so he couldn't scramble back for the ball, leaving the glory of the recovery to someone else ). With another short field, MBA went on to score the tying TD.

I personally would have taken the three points when EHS went for it on 4th and goal in the 4th quarter, but can understand that call. If you don't make it, MBA has to start on its own three, is probably going to be conservative and you figure you stop them and get the ball back in good field position with plenty of time to score and win. You don't expect MBA to hold the ball for the next 8:30 and kick a field goal to win it with just 41 seconds left. But they did. Perfectly executed drive. Well coached but really it was a great effort by the MBA players, particularly Lassing with a lot of second effort, carrying tacklers with him, that did it. Someone else compared this to the Brownsville game back in the 70s. The last drive reminded me more of the late game winning drive led by Ingle Martin against a star-studded Jacksonville Bolles team many years back.

Darkwa is a super, super running back. If he stays healthy, we should continue to hear about him at the college level. And the Fletcher kid will be playing at the next level as well. What a leg. That kick would have been good from 50.

The MBA boys showed poise and character and deserved to come up with the W.

However, they never would have had a chance without the help of the Ensworth head coach.

It was ego and vanity that made him go for it on 4th down on his own 30 and it was ego and vanity that made him go for the touchdown instead of the go-ahead field goal in the 4th quarter. Those coaching decisions gave MBA a chance to get back into the game. Without them, they had no real chance.
