  1. You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Do you know the person (and group) at BA who oversees this process? I do and to besmirch him and others is pretty ridiculous. They do no such thing. You also probably think BA pays someone full financial aid and that is also a false stmt and yes i know that for fact. There is not one student at BA who receives a full ride. In any case, just another wonderful example of the internet - throw rumors out there with no basis in fact.

Listen, i am not saying that ba or ensworth or any other schools violate the rules. Of course they do not receive a full ride, that is illegal. What is not illegal is for parents to give other parents money....as long as that money is not used for tuition. So people will put the gift toward mortgage and pay tuition with there paycheck. This is not against the rules. I know this goes on because I have witnessed it and have had it explained to be by parents of both schools. Many of times the kid isn't even an athlete, but A parent looses a job and other parents help them out. It is the only way to get around the rules, and it happens frequently. No students receive full rides by the schools, but people help them out so they don't pay and it is within the guidelines of the tssaa

  2. It isn't cheating since it's not against the rules. Why do you think ensworth and Brentwood academy have not been caught for this? They pay directly to the families, and none of that money is used for tuition. The kid may not even be a good athlete, but that's how schools legally help out families that can't afford a new car (tuition) yearly

  3. Just curious....you people do realize that I could give a family in need 10,000 dollars and tell hek to use it for morgsge, and for them to use all the money they have towards tuition. MBA was either to lazy or incompetent to cheat this way, which is why they were brought down. If you do not believe this goes on at other dII schools you are completely delusional.

  4. I'm going to be broadcasting the Ensworth/FRHS game on Friday for ATW Sportscast, and I look forward to seeing Elder in action again. He's averaged nearly ten yards a carry (9.92) this season, and it's rather astonishing to me that Elder scored 4 TDs total against BA last week: two rushing (24 carries for 265 yards) and two receiving (four receptions for 144 yards). BA has an excellent defense, but Elder tore through them similar to how he did in the playoff semifinals last year.

Remember: he's only a junior. I expect Elder to be heavily recruited in football, though I've heard good things about his basketball skills as well (though I've never seen him play basketball).

Elder's 2011 game-by-game rushing stats (rushing TDs in parentheses)

    MUS: 17/135 (2)

    Knox Webb: 13/132 (2)

    McCallie: 24/231 (2)

    Raleigh-Egypt: 5/86 (2)

    Baylor: 19/81

    BGA: 21/266 (1)

    PJP: 9/116

    MBA: 17/166 (2)

    BA: 24/265 (2)

Elder also had three receptions for 90 yards and three receiving TDs against Raleigh-Egypt. Baylor held him to only 81 yards on 19 carries, though he also had four receptions for 67 yards in that game.

There are other excellent running backs in II-AA, but Elder has elite talent and should end up with the award. He'll have a great chance to win it in 2012 as well.

Yes, he is a shoe-in for the award.

  5. Since when does 3 out of 4 catches for TDs against JP2 prove anything? Can not wait for Maurice's MBA prediction this week to be wrong again! I only read that rag on line. It use to be an OK local news source.

Really not that big of a deal...just an insight to how the game went. Why do you call Ensworth Mappleworth? And Corn will run for 250...

  6. From what I have heard the big red may have suffered two detrimental losses against PC. I have heard that rb/cb Jhamall Wright suffered a concussion, and I saw that he was taken out of the game. Also lb James Kay may have suffered ligament damage in both shoulders? I don't know if that's right, but I noticed he also did not play the 4th quarter. These two injuries could prove to be detrimental, for the defense has not looked great through the first 6 games. Even if these two players are out, I'm going to say MBA 24-10. They do have talent, but have to minimize their mistakes, mostly in the red zone. What's Ryan got this year? Heard from a parent their qb can really run.

  7. After watching the film of that game I was asking myself if this was really the Big Red???

I wouldn't be so fast in calling this MBA team/defense out. Sure it has been a rough 3 game span. They played maybe the best team in the country first (Trinity Cincinnati powerhouse Elder 56-7 last week), then they played a poor game against BA. Maybe they were still feeling the effects of the Trinity game, I don't know. But against Baylor they came out, played hard, and should have won the game. They looked like the better team. The defense blew two plays, one blown coverage by the new safety (Blackwell is still hurt)with 2 min left to loose the game. This is a talented team with good leadership, and I think they will bounce back against BGA. I won't be able to go to this one, but am looking forward to watching it via webcast.

  8. Sadly, I must concur with posters that have said it was the worst MBA performance they've ever seen, at least in the last 15 years. I think the BA player quoted in the paper pretty much summed it up when he said, "it seemed they weren't ready for us".

MBA has always been known as a team that is extremely well prepared, disciplined, and hard hitting. I saw none of that Friday night. Arm tackling, looking lost, biting on fakes consistently, no pressure up front. The D-line looked soft. It may be time to think about moving some guys around. James Kay is big enough to play D-line, in my opinion, and looks a step slow at LB anyway. Why not try it?

In years past, MBA has been deficient in athleticism and size, but found a way to win because they out-hit, out-schemed, and out-played their opponent. This doesn't appear to be happening with this team.

I agree that was the worst showing in the past 10 years of MBA football I have seen. After BA went up 21-0, it seemed the team almost quit. Defensive line/offensive line play has been terrible. It looked like Bars got beat every play when he had to block #60. Every foundation of a team is the lines, and when neither side of the ball can do much the outcome will never be pretty. Worst defensive line I've ever seen out of an MBA team. Kay probably should be a D end, and if they have an able backup they should move him. He's one of the best middle linebackers in Middle Tennessee, but the defensive line needs the most help on the team. There was no push or pressure in the past two games, which screws up every part of a defense. They should also move Robertson inside, and maybe bring a think o-lineman inside to help add some size. The schemes seem ok, but when your d-line and o-line are getting pushed back, it messes up the paths and ability for second level guys or runningbacks/fullbacks to make plays. I sure hope these boys can turn it around against Baylor. If not, they could be looking at a 2-6 record in a few weeks...

  9. You're going to owe this family a HUGE apology when all the facts are on the table. This kid's decision not to play for this coach came during the 2010 season; this was way before any 2011 meetings or roster assignments. This decision was private for him and he remained silent and did not advertise his reasons. The factor of being benched for 2011was not even discussed nor an issue, no team meetings had occurred or rosters made. He remained silent and demanded not one thing. There was a called meeting, not by the student, on why he was not going to play the 2011 season. The reasons were given in written form and being benched was not one of them. Now for the jabs. If you remember the record in 2009 before he was called up was 5-4; the record after he finished was 9-5. The only loss MBA suffered during his tenure that season was to MUS in the championship game. The playoff games were hard fought by the whole team and included BGA, ENSWORTH, and BA. This set of games would make it hard for anyone to discount that his contribution. All the guys you mentioned were there during the 5-4 part of the season. Now for the next jab that DavidSchwetty seems to enjoy -- that he is not as good as the back up QB. I BEG to differ. Its rare that a 2 QB system works (UT for example). The stats that I could find shows the back up QB's rushing yards somewhere around negative 1.7 per carry and this kid's rushing yards were positive 4.7. Pass completion was essentially the same. Interceptions were three for both. Two of the starting QB's interceptions were Hail Mary's during the ENSWORTH game. Many of the stats racked up by the back up were done on teams with loosing records. I went to those games and to me there is NO question which one can read the field, pass, scramble, lead, and get the job done - it's the same one that stepped up when called in the 2009. If you polled the team you would get the same answer by a supermajority. He is a true and respected leader!

Mr. Simonis, I attended a few games, watched a few others online. Aaron is a leader, but not a qb. Maybe in 07 when MBA could run over everyone, he would have been great, but lately they have to be duel threat to win. The boy can't throw, Hall can. It's as simple as that. The main reason the 10' team won all those games were because of Fitz Lassing, and the O-line. It had little to do with 80 passing yards a game. I do not blame him for not wanting to run the ball after those injuries. It is always terrible when a kid goes through something like that. Hopefully we can watch your son on the field next year, quarterback or not.

  10. Agreed on all points PBD! Although I will say I have a dog in the hunt as I've know him for several years. I'm a Brentwood High parent that was at the game as well and it was clear that he could have helped any team in the state. I had a couple of knowledgeable parents from BA tell me that it was a mystery as to why his time was so limited by the staff there.

But in a game where some of the best players in the state were playing, he had a tremendous game. Props to Joshua! I wish him and his family nothing but the best!

I know he returned kicks as a sophmore, returning two for touchdowns against Ravenwood alone. He was also used at receiver and running back. I have no idea why is offensive times was limited.

  11. And nobody had commented so i figured id throw it out on here too

I do not watch enough DII A games to make an intelligent post. But I've heard about the Blance brother's being pretty good, also watched the USJ qb in the all star game. He seemed to be a pretty good quarterback.

  12. If you don't mind me asking, it is very apparent that you lean towards MBA, so why aren't you making a push for Conor Caldwell? After Reigel, Caldwell was probably the best defender on that team.

Conor was a great player this year, no question in that. However when you look at the list, he can hold his own but is not quite as good as those boys. I was only able to attend, MBA v BA, MBA v Ensworth X 2, and the MBA Baylor game. He seemed to have a good game, but in all the defensive lineman for the other teams stole the show (Crenshaw, Mackey, and Baron). I would really like to see Conor on the list, and although I have not met him, I have heard he exemplifies the "Gentleman, Scholar, Athlete" motto of MBA. I try not to be biased towards my alma mater (although I generally find myself failing), and give more of an accurate representation of what the list should be. I do think Conor will be all region because he definitely the 4th best defensive lineman in the middle/east region.

  13. I assume you quoted the wrong quote, as I don't think you can differ with someone who didn't offer an opinion on or choice of the two LBs in question in the first place.

I agree on the size issue, and that's why I made the height/weight allocation query. What is "size"? Is a taller person who weighs less than a shorter person considered to have a size advantage or disadvantage? The point being, if a voter looked at two players with similar stats and was asked to break the tie on "size", I don't know how in the world the voter would know where to start (particularly with the example at hand, with two equally yet differently "sized" big men).

My intentions were to quote both, my apologize.

  14. I don't understand this theory. Forget this particular debate/comparison. If two players have the same stats, are you saying all-state should be awarded to the player with "size"? If so, what would be the percentage allocation between height and weight to determine "size"?

I've seen numerous games on both, and beg to differ. Prevost had 15 more tackles in one more game, but no forced/recovered fumbles, while Kay had two for each. Stats do not necessarily show how one plays the game however, and if you have watched them closely, you will clearly see the better high school linebacker. As far as projecting towards college and recruiting, Prevost definitely the edge on that because of his height and speed.

But to comment on Shakin's post, what does size have to do with anything? And what is your definition of size? I think Prevost is about 6'0 210, while Kay is more of a stockier build. About 5'10 225 I'd say. So what does size have to do with anything? They are both big boys. In high school you can be 5'5 and still be a great player, and that is the beauty of the sport. Size does not affect anything.

But on to Pecos1, I totally agree with your statement that there are 4 or 5 receiver's worth all state recognition. Talent wise, the top 3 are Batey, Garlington, and Hale, in no specific order. But Dingess has made his case with the clutch plays. His BA and Baylor catches will be remembered for a long time. Any 4 of these receivers should be considered.

  15. I know that Furman is looking at him by Coach Sorrels who got Todd his oldest brother over their. Fowler at Vanderbilt too. The thing with Prevost is that this is his first year playing linebacker I think he might have played d-line last year. And yes some of his plays were inconsistent but he made huge plays for the Ensworth defense. With his size and ability he should be a top prospect in the state next year.

I agree, and if I am not mistaken he played at McCallie last year? One more year at linebacker will do him wonders. I am excited to see where the kid ends up. Top prospect? I don't know about that, but he will be one of the better defensive players in Divison II I am sure.

  16. QB- Jacob Huesman-Baylor

    QB-Drew Parker-Ensworth

    RB-Corn Elder-Ensworth

    RB-Victor Caro-BA

    RB- Nantambu Fentress- Ensworth*

    OL-Ben Still- MUS

    OL-Austin Hicks-McCallie

    OL-Conner Caruthers-MUS

    OL-Barret Cougar-Baylor

    OL- Graham Shuler-BA

    TE- Blake Thomson- BGA

    WR- Keenan Hale-McCallie

    WR- David Dingess- Ensworth

    Defense

    DL-Kennan Crenshaw-Ensworth

    DL-John Mackey-Baylor

    DL-Matt Murphy-Christian Brothers

    DL-Woody Barron

    LB-Jarrod Coleman-McCallie

    LB-James Kay- MBA

    LB-Davis Helton-Baylor

    LB-Steve Varnado- Christian Brothers

    LB-Henry Dickinson- MUS

    DB-Josh Smith-BGA

    DB-Cory Batey-Ensworth

    DB-Joe Reigle-MBA

    DB-Derek King-BA

    DB- Rodney Edmiston- Ensworth

    ATH-Weldon Garlington-BA

    P-Toby Baker-MUS**

    K-Phillip Spellman-MBA

*Tyler Franks-MBA would also work here. Had a great year, averaged 92 and was MBA's best offensive player in my opinion.

*Radir Anoor- BA could take this spot as well, in some games he looked more effective that Caro. He has lighting speed and was a real nightmare for defenses.

The reason I put Fentress in is because he played effectively on both sides of the ball as a RB and a LB. A team leader that does almost everything right.

**Nathan Renfroe is probably the best punter I've seen this year. Would not be surprised if he beat out Baker.

Hdcastle I really like this list. Fentress could very well be in there at running back. He played solid all year for Ensworth. I would probably throw in Renfro as kicker, and keep backer at punter. I think Renfro is going to college as a punter, but he did both this year well, while Baker primarily punted.

Auburnfan42 I followed Ensworth this year and watched Prevost closely (I knew two of his elder brothers at MBA), and although he improved steadily throughout the year, I do not think he is all state worthy. In my opinion he was a little inconsistent on some of his reads and I would notice would be in the wrong hole sometimes on defense. This was often covered up because of Ensworth's speed on defense, which is a true credit to them. I don't know if I have seen a defense that fast in the past 5-6 years. Also I do not think Prevost had 101 tackles, 4 sacks or a pick. I think his stats were more along the lines of 95-2-0. He will be an all state selection as a senior mark my words. Auburnfan do you know if any colleges are looking at him? He has great size and I think can have an impact at the next level.

  17. Grey Ghost, always good posts, but I must disagree on this one. I know both of the coaches and I along with the vast majority would agree that you have that one backwards.

Yes Grey Ghost what are you talking about? I'm curious to how the culture has changed since 1998? I attended the school in the early 2000's and don't find it has changed much. If you want to talk about race, MBA started less black players this year (3) than in 2000. Ensworth started 9 on their defense alone. Does this matter? NO. Race has nothing to do with high school football and should be left out of this thread about ENSWORTH and BAYLOR.

  18. You are right in that the victor gets the spoils and for that reason Parker may have the edge over Beathard who was brilliant most of the year. He beat Derek King so badly that BA took King out of the game. A late interception against MBA cost BGA a win and Parker was mistake free.

According to http://www.hsfdatabase.com/tn_allstate2009DIIAA.htm, there will be 4 defensive lineman, 5 linebackers, and 3 running backs, and 5 DB's, which are different than the current list. So if the all state team is similar format to last years, than it should be:

    Offense

    QB- Jacob Huesman-Baylor

    QB-Drew Parker-Ensworth

    RB-Corn Elder-Ensworth

    RB-Victor Caro-BA

    RB-Tyler Franks-MBA-???????

    OL-Ben Still- MUS

    OL-Austin Hicks-McCallie

    OL-Conner Caruthers-MUS

    OL-Barret Cougar-Baylor

    OL- Graham Shuler-BA

    TE- Blake Thomson- BGA

    WR- Keenan Hale-McCallie

    WR- David Dingess- Ensworth

    Defense

    DL-Kennan Crenshaw-Ensworth

    DL-John Mackey-Baylor

    DL-Matt Murphy-Christian Brothers

    DL-Woody Barron-BA

    LB-Jarrod Coleman-McCallie

    LB-Davis Helton-Baylor

    LB-James Kay-MBA

    LB-Steve Varnado- Christian Brothers

    LB-Henry Dickinson- MUS

    DB-Josh Smith-BGA

    DB-Cory Batey-Ensworth

    DB-Joe Reigle-MBA

    DB-Kwazel Bertrand-BA?????

    DB-Derek King-BA

    ATH-Weldon Garlington-BA

    P-Toby Baker-MUS

    K-Phillip Spellman-MBA

  19. I agree, it's a close call. I hope he gets it.

Dingess and Batey both could be substituted for Hale. Both are great athletes and will move on after high school to college ball. Batey is one of the most phenomenal athletes I have seen this year. He is a physical specimen and will make his high school very proud one day.

As far as Edmiston, he was a great addition to the Ensworth secondary this year. He has really good ball skills, but his tackling is lacking, and as a strong safety your supporting the run game most of the time.

I have seen Parker and Beathard play, and while Beathard has the better arm and accuracy, you may have a point. Parker has come up huge in big games, and was one of the reasons for win streak Ensworth rattled off.

I have seen Varnado play only once this year, and while he was good, I did not think he was near at the level of Kay. I assume your getting these stats off of the Tennessee Super Prep Conference website, but I think Kay had closer to 80 tackles and a few forced/recovered fumbles (based off unapproved website, where the school breaks down the film and posts the stats). And while yes, Varnado still had better stats, watch the two play and you will see what I am talking about. Kay's the best in the middle in the league.

  20. Elder certainly needs to be on the list but as a running back. The problem is that I have not seen another defensive back that deserves to be on this selective team.

Well I believe Fentress and Elder should be there, but Fentress isn't as good as LB as the other three, and Elder had to be on there, so it fits best.
