  1. FRANKLIN - On the strength of 14 medalists, including three champions, Father Ryan claimed the TSSAA D-II state traditional wrestling championship here Saturday at the Williamson County Ag and Expo Center

On a night when the Purple Irish from Nashville won its 12th state traditional crown, school milestones were set in both divisions, new state records established and a coaching legend retires after 40 years.

A Legend Retires: Longtime Baylor assistant coach Schaack Van Deusen steps down as a coach and will also retire as a teacher and head of the drama program at the end of the school year.

Van Deusen has coached teams to state championships in six decades (most among all Tennessee high school coaches) and served as an assistant to Notre Dame's Nick Bratcher in the mid-1960s and helped guide Baylor to team titles over five decades with a trio of head coaches Luke Worsham, Jim Morgan and Ben Nelson.

The former wrestler at Baylor School, U. of Virginia and U. of Chattanooga, Van Deusen also was head coach for the 1970 state champion Notre Dame squad.

"I told the guys that it has been a privilege working with them and they overcame a lot this year to finish second," said Van Deusen. "It's been a great 40 years coaching many great wrestlers, but it is time to step aside and let someone else be in the chair next to (head coach) Ben Nelson."

"Schaack has been a tremendous asset to our sport over the years and he surely will be missed," said Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson.

Two-time defending state champ Baylor had 12 state medalists, including three champions.

"Father Ryan wrestled exceptionally well this weekend and they were the best team," said Baylor head coach Ben Nelson. "I am pleased with how our guys wrestled and even though we have eight seniors graduating, we have a solid group of young wrestlers ready to go next year."

    Milestone Wins:

Baylor's Zach Watson (126) won a school record fifth championship, while Campbell Lewis of Soddy Daisy won a school best fourth crown.

Father Ryan's Michael Hooker set three state records this season, including a single season high of 65 wins with his triumph in tonight's final.

Headed to the Naval Academy Prep School in the fall, Hooker also holds the state mark for consecutive wins (115) and career wins (239). He closes out his career at 239-11 (65-0 this season) and last lost in the 2010 state finals.

Congrats to Zach on winning 5 State Championships and this years OW! Billy you've got to be extremely PROUD! Congrats to Campbell Lewis on getting OW and another State Championship! Like to also congratulate young Mike Hooker on his success on the mat. Congrats to Big Amos of BA for his 2nd consecutive State Championship and a nice win streak to add. Big Ups to Woods on his State Title. To all the seniors much success in your future.

  2. Mr. Hooker will easily take home his final state championship title, but I'll be very anxious to see the rematch of Watson vs. Robinson. Watson proved that he has the heart of a champion during their match at duals, but Robinson is not someone that is prone to losing twice to the same person. Robinson gassed hard in the 3rd period, but you can bet he'll have that fixed by the time the indy tournament gets here. It's going to be the best match of the tournament IMO, and something that I can't wait to see.

That was indeed a very good match between Zach and Robinson. However, I'd have to say that Zach will finish his HS Career without giving up a loss to a TN wrestler since the 8th grade and winning his 5th State Championship Title. But, I am looking forward to the rematch between two VERY good wrestlers!

Good match between Garcia and Freeman. Garcia winning it in overtime.

  4. There are several big duals tonight.

    Beech vs Springfield

    winner vs hendersonville

    Ravenwood vs Franklin

    MtJuliet vs Siegel

Any other big duals across the state that we should be aware of?

The Ravenwood and Franklin Dual should be a nice one considering they're in the same Region.

  5. What were some of the individual results from the Briarcrest Tourney? I see only six teams were there. I heard that Calloway look big at 130 and pinned thru the tournament. Who won the tournament? How did Bellet, Maloney and Dupree do in this tournament?

  6. Anyone know what teams are going?

    Teams Attending:

  7. Congrats to Ryan on their win of their tournament this year! But, there's no doubt had CBHS, who graduated three top wrestlers last season, had all of there guys in the tournament and McCallie were there can one really argue that Ryan would have won! Suppose we can merely speculate the outcome! By the way, Ryan has wrestled CBHS this season....How did that end up?

  8. The Ryan Tournament did seem a bit down this year than from years past! With CBHS missing a few members of their line up and McCallie wrestling in Ohio this year. Not to say that 2 teams shaped the entire tourament but they certainly would have potentially changed the make up of the finals on Saturday had they been there! Id have to agree that the deepest and toughest weight class of the tournament was by far 130 pounds!

  9. I would have to say that the 130 pound weight class is pretty stacked this year at this tournament, could arguably be the toughest in the tournament.

    Division 1 Wrestlers

Austin Woods (Franklin)- Ranked 1st D1

Scott Seamon (Mt. Juliet)- Ranked 6th D1

    Division 2 Wrestlers

Cole Mosely (Ryan)- Ranked 1st D2

Matt Johnson (CBHS)- Ranked 3rd D2

    Matthew Davidson(MBA)- Ranked 5th D2

    Trevor Jenkins(St.Benedict)- Ranked 6th D2

Note: Not sure if MBA is actually coming, however they've been there every year.

I agree that 130 is the by far the toughest weight class. I just heard not five minutes ago from a reliable source that Carlos Calloway may have made his way to 130. I also saw that Bellet wrestled 130 in the duals a few days ago.
