  1. was that meant to be clever? You not being from Tn. means nothing to me...I only know you are trying to offend me and I am not.

    Well that's a relief. I'm glad you're not.

Not sure why you keep mentioning TN. As I only brought it up to correct you on your own ASSumption of my origin. I'll let you have the last word (since that's what you're accustomed to) because this thread ain't about you or me.

  2. Sorry it hit so close to home, I guess. That may have been the nicest thing ever said to me on here. Thank you.

You're welcome. Not from this state btw, when it hits home I'll let ya know.

Look forward to your future posts, dbag.

  3. Congrats to PS. I am sure glad he does not seem to have the same inferiority complex about where he came from than others from the same place seem to have.

    You're such a tool.

Congrats Philip. You're a great representative of the sport for the entire state.

  4. THE BEST CALL OF THE TOURNAMENT! BY ONE THE THE HIGHEST RATE REF IN THE STATE, IF NOT THE HIGHEST. THE WRESTLER WAS SHOOTING JUST TO HOLD THE LEG AND NOT IMPROVE OR SCORE. COACH WAS WARNED OF SUCH ACTS THAT THE SAME WRESTLER DID IN MANY PRIOR MATCHES.

GREAT CALL! AND I AM NOT A FAN OF EITHER TEAM

I think most people appreciate the service of the officials and realize that most of them just want to give back to the sport. It's one thing to defend a ref if a questionable call is made during a scramble or chain wrestling, but the call against the FR kid was shocking.

What else was he supposed to do? If his shot is blocked, is he supposed to just let go and give up a TD?

To all the refs posting about 'spirit of the rule book' or whatever nonsense- I would ask where your common sense is...

Like others have mentioned, if the FR kid's shot attempt was stalling that one particular time and every other similar situation its always a stalemate,, then why is stalling never called on top man for throwing boots to avoid giving up an escape??

Please provide the rule or spirit of the rule for this situation.

This particular match involved a ref who was clearly trying to inject himself into the match, rather than be a neutral arbiter. It was unfortunate that Mosley wrestled his finals match on the same shift as that official.

  5. It is very debatable. I did not see control and have watched the match now several times. Does not do a lot of good to complain about the refs, but to turn it around, CBHS wins last year in the finals if stalling is called correctly in the 103 lbs match and a couple of others. I will leave it at--this year's semis was very exciting, one to be remembered for a long time.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.. You're exactly right- it does no good to complain about the refs. and as you have just pointed out, the missed calls seem to balance themselves out in the end. Blaming refs for the result of matches is pointless. The Baylor fans seem to understand that, which is probably why they're not on here raising helll and crying. Others should follow their lead.

  6. So you are saying that CB won because of a ref?

Not so much that CB won because of a ref, but maybe Baylor lost because of one. It's not a stretch to say.. After all, you have a lot of experience when it comes to blaming refs for missed calls and thus costing an indiv. or team from a win. You've even gone so far as to say, in the past, that refs have ulterior motives during some matches.

Fact is CB won on that given day, congrats to them.

My humble opinion is that Baylor has a slight edge for the indiv crown.

  7. Well,,,,I would not want you to go about and be aimless on anything that you bring up. The reality of what you may have been talking about was scheduling a school or team. I do believe that in that case the coach has the responsibility to put who ever he feels like on it, no matter how many people want Baylor on Bradley's schedule.

If, for your amusement, believe that putting a school on the schedule and then backing out a few days before is good for the sport, than that is pretty good amusement. I think it is bad for the sport, bad for the wrestlers, bad for the coach that broke the promise (since there was no contract, it was only a promise to wrestle).

It really has nothing to do with weather Central backed out for the likely winner of DI or Silverdale, the result is the same.

And soms,,,,,,yes, coach Morris was not happy about the situation,,,,did you think I just made this stuff up? Coach Morris is a friend of mine and I respect him as a coach, dad and man. I believe what he told me. Get over the jail thing, it is not that big of a deal,,,,,lots of people spend the night in jail, it all goes away with time.

If a coach has total control over his program, which gives him the right to schedule whomever he wants (which you have acknowledged), then why doesn't he have the right to cancel a match if it is in the best interest of his team? From what I gathered, there were multiple other teams who attended anyways. Furthermore, you have stated in the past that a coach knows best for his team and no one else, so he is not held accountable by others. So it makes no difference if a coach cancels a match or refuses to schedule one in the beginning- they are powers given to the coach to use, as he sees fit, in the interest of his team.

I have no interest in going back and forth with you, as you remind me of that child in the family who has to have the last word or will make the day miserable for all around him.

I yield back the balance of my time.

  8. Pull up the quote you believe you saw from me and I will defend or agree with you comments here. I think you are probably totally wrong on what you believe you have read. Mike Scott is not undesirable at all in my book, I just took a shot at him because of his loyalty to what he believed his team was about. It was not personal at all.

I look forward to your evidence.

I'm sorry Texas but I am just not going to waste my time, aimlessly looking for posts from over a year ago. I'm confident that I can read and have the competency to understand what I've read. Your view in the past is that a coach knows best for his team and to heck with everyone else. That's the beauty of these online forums though - Anyone can speak with the broadest of strokes, even yourself, right?

But for your amusement, I'll refer to your initial post of this thread. I suppose I replied to your accusation based on one sentence- "If you want to hurt the sport of wrestling, cancel your matches cause you are not at your very best." Really? I can think of much bigger issues that hurt the sport in this state that would trump a small school division team from canceling on another.

I'm just glad the team that'll win DI has likely already wrestled the winner of DII, whoever those teams may be. That's good for wrestling in your state.

  9. Texas23,

I am somewhat confused on your position. I could've sworn that I have seen you on this board, in the past, advocating that coaches and programs can engage in this very kind of behavior- along with choosing who you want to wrestle and whom you want to avoid.

It seems that the undesirable character and disposition of mike scott has succeeded in clouding many people's logic on this board. As a student of the law, I would expect better.

  10. Thanks for pointing out the omissions on Tenn guys at 195 and 285 didn't realize MTN stood for MBA until Frank Simpson's good e-mail

maybe the tourney staff should use the school intials instead of making one up. not sure they did that for any other school. but my fault for not going thru each Tenn school to see if anyone else was in the finals.

and should have known St.B was there and missed it. my mistake

if you think I am so pro chattanooga maybe you should read my pre-tourney notes over the years even back to the late 1990s with the Free Press as I have made sure I contacted as many coaches from around that state as possible.

have done stories on TSB, Ryan, Overton, MBA, Clarksville, Christian Bros, etc. not sure anyone else knew or wrote about who was the youngest champion ever ... a 6th grader from TSB (Jody Chamberlain) and did a story in 2007 on him when Miller won it as an 8th grader ..

and covered a mid-week Overton-Ryan dual in '96 or maybe '98 when they were 1-2 in the state . not sure any other reporter from East of Nashville was there that nite. the night Mondelli was DQed

    any other questions???

    b.b.b.

And what a night that was.

  11. I think what we are seeing this year out of Bradley is not so much thier not as good as that they finally forced everybody else to become more serious about the way they approach the sport. You can't deny that Soddy Cleveland, Clarksville, etc. have been Bear hunting for along time now with not very good results ,but to me it seems that this year has been a plus for the state as a whole. Programs have elevated thier performance and it should be nothing but a good thing for the growth of the sport. I may even travel to the dirt floor to watch the finals this yr, but i still wish it was in chatt. town or mtsu.

That's a very flimsy argument to make considering what I've observed about the wrestling in this state over the last decade or so..

  12. FOLLOWING ARTICLE WAS PUBLISHED, March 30, IN THE WSJ:

    Wrestling, Sport for Our Times

    By James Freeman

The official sport of the "new normal" recently held its annual championships in Philadelphia. Think of college wrestling as the athletic version of an austerity program. Wearing almost nothing, coached by men who make next to nothing, and with no hope of professional careers because they don't exist, 34 competitiors in each weight class arrived on the mats of the NCAA tournament.

Of course, all but one in each of the 10 weight classes left disappointed. As consolation prizes, many received significant facial bruising, and at least one, defending champion Darrion Caldwell of NC State, a dislocated shoulder.

Was anyone helped by quantitative easing? Not really. Some easing occurred when Arizona State's Bubba Jenkins released his cradle and stopped forcing his opponent to touch his knee to his head. But that was because the referee had signalled a pin to end the match, so Mr. Jenkins could afford to be accommodative.

Since the financial crisis, many Americans have talked about a return to traditional values like thrift, prudence and hard work. You can't get more traditional than wrestling. Even before Odysseus and Ajax grappled to a draw in Homer's Iliad, even before wrestling was a fan favorite at the ancient Olympics, cavemen scrawled images of prehistoric bouts.

Prudence? Experience in this sport teaches that one small mistake can result in a wrestler being thrown to his back. As for thrift, many competitors and coaches weren't even spending money on shampoo, their shaved heads gleaming under the lights of the Wells Fargo Center. Hard work? These guys have to train for "man's oldest form of recreational combat" WHILE on a diet. Sports fans still struggling with unemployment close to 9 percent, may find that wrestling has a new appeal in this environment. NFL players and owners still haven't agreed on how to split $9 Billion. In baseball, just two players, Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo, are scheduled to earn a combined $18 million from the NY Mets- even though neither one was good enough to make this year's team.

Fans who give wrestling a try may find that it offers all of the excitement of other sports. It is pure joy to watch kids like Penn State's David Taylor, a redshirt freshman who seemed to be without fear as he charged undefeated through the college season and into the NCAA final. Unfortunately for him, that's where he ran into the aforementioned Mr. Jenkins. The low-budget nature of wrestling also makes it an efficient vehicle for charity. Clinton Matter, an AA in the 1990s at the Univ of Penn, joined with a group of friends in 2009 to start an organization called Beat the Streets Philadelphia, which supports youth wrestling programs as well as inner-city high school teams.

Mr. Matter, who works on Wall Street and serves as chairman of the organization, reports that he and his friends are supporting programs in Philadelphia and in nearby Camden, N.J., that provide opportunities for 475 wrestlers. They accept grapplers as youn as four years of age, and they don't turn anyone away.

....The kids learn the virtues of discipline, hard work and accountability--all the qualities they'll need as they grow up. They might even help a prosperous America become the next normal.

  13. I kind of doubt that it is called a transfer if you were not in another high school to start with. I can tell you that I went to the Cleveland city schools until 9th grade when I went to Bradley. It was considered a choice, not a transfer.

Many would argue that the open-zone system is similar to the perceived "advantages" of private schools. They are both used as obvious recruiting mechanisms.

  14. I doubt that the factor in wrestling or not wrestling Baylor has anything to do with their current schedule. If you believe that, then you may have studied their schedules and ignored the stated reasons that Bradley chooses not to engage with these teams. You have inferred that a chance to lose to Baylor is the factor.

    [/quote

That's a good point, however, bringing up the differences of schedules initially was meant to point out that Bradley would not easily win, if at all, that dual match either this year or any other year. There is obviously better competition out there for Bradley after seeing 50+ point wins all the way down their schedule.

My whole point being, there is better competition for them and it's in our own state. So it's unfortunate that this lone public school, who only occasionally has competition amongst their DI counterparts, refuses to wrestle other TN teams because of some "advantages."

  15. Yeah, I guess you're right. I would be surprised if anyone other than a few parents and cheerleaders showed up to see this match.

As far as the schedules go, you apparently have not studied Baylor's very closely.

Perhaps I should have clarified my original post, since you understood none of it--

When I said that no one on this thread is interesting in seeing those two teams wrestle Bradley, I was referring to Pummel's comment about CBHS and Father Ryan. Those schools are not located so relatively close to Bradley.

Of course more than a few parents and cheerleaders would show up to watch Baylor or McCallie vs Bradley. In fact, it would be great for the wrestling community in TN if these matches were available.

And as far as the scheduling goes, you just proved my point. There's only one schedule with a lack of competition.

Apparently I have studied both teams' schedules (Bradley & Baylor) which led me to say that "I would not want that match either if I was BRADLEY"

  16. cmonman - There are no false hopes at Centennial. They get nothing but the unadulterated truth from me about their chances during the regular season and up through state. Go ahead and ask them. They will tell you the same thing.

As far as the work/wrestling for 12 months out of the year? You just happened to mention the three guys on the team who are going to tournaments in Georgia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Illinois during the off-season. That is not local to me.

Wrestling state placers and champions from 5 different states is local?

Ooltewah and G.P. West had a variety of wrestlers from all over Tennessee (Chattanooga, Memphis) and Kentucky. The Cougar Classic had teams from Illinois and Kentucky. Again, how are we being local? Have you ever heard of Caleb Ervin? He was ranked #2 in the nation when Parker Smith faced him last year @ G.P. West.

Even worse is your denigration of the competition in the 'local area'. Have you seen the roster of the competition just in our district? Every year we have the pleasure of wrestling Indy, Franklin, Ravenwood, and Brentwood.

It doesn't serve one well to make broad strokes with the brush when our knowledge of the situation is lacking.

    Matthew Becker

    Centennial Wrestling

    Bingo.

  17. Why not just go ahead and bring in Christ Bros, and Fader Ryan so it can be shown one one date that they are able to beat the rest of the state.

I don't think anyone cares about Bradley wrestling either of those teams, but what about those two schools that are relatively close??

Just by looking at the level of competition (or lack thereof) on both schedules, I wouldn't want that match either if I was Bradley.

  18. Well I'm def not a kid or somebody on cbhs team and I don't know why they weren't there Srry couldn't be any help to u

Oh I thought it might've been because of what may or may not had been found in their hotel rooms when in HI..

  19. Yes the tourney was down this year and if cbhs would have brought everyone they would have won father Ryan easily. I really don't understand alot of the stalling calls that were made like when a guy is up 19-5 and the guy who is up gets hit for stalling yet he clearly has been wrestling to score and when a wrestler is losing a match and on bottom with :16 seconds left he gets hit for stalling... If the kid who is already losing doesn't want to wrestle I feel like u should let him lay there for 16 seconds if he chooses not to wrestle since he may know he isn't going to win... Just my feelings

Since you're obviously a kid on CBHS team, could you expand on why those certain wrestlers weren't able to make it to the tourney?

soddy finishing second, en route to wins over both father ryan and Collins Hill is simply not going to happen.

  21. I'm with you. If hardcore wasn't about looking for the easy way out he'd of stayed and wrestled, like any true wrestler.

Do not address me in any way. I have no desire to be associated with someone such as yourself and I have neither the time (as opposed to you with your 100+ posts in 5 days) nor the inclination to refute your idiotic posts.

I actually couldn't click the ignore user button fast enough--which I recommend everyone do so this problem could be solved permanently.

  22. This kid that some want to lose is an amazing kid!

Last weekend at Halls there was a kid that was not going to wrestle him and Nick went into the stands, sat beside him, wrapped his arm around the kids neck and told him these words: it's anyones match, incuding yours! Even though you are new to the sport you can win! Then he said that he was scared of every opponent because he had been beat before by new kids that wanted the win!

Now, I don't know how that kid did becuase we left the tourney early but for all who for some reason hate or dislike me and or my son can count on us to be in your corner anytime pulling for you! I did not understand how CoachT worked untill apparently, I made a few people mad and for that, I am sorry! All this drama makes me and several others that I know want to leave this sport behind and take up Ping Pong..... All I know, and to some that is nothing, is that to see a young man or woman wrestle is one of the greatest things that I have seen to make a child grow into an adult with a confident mind, body and soul.

My boys came up with the idea to give their medals away to small kids in the stand so they too would like wrestling. Once my middle son gave a medal to a kid in the stands and that kid was handicaped. Later in the year that kid and his mother came up to us just before a match and said that the kid was wrestling and he gave Ethan a Huge medal that read "Thanks for being a hero". Ethan has that medal still today in plain sight so he remembers that kid and what it means to him. Well, Ethan lost that match but when he walked off the mat crying, there was that kid, waiting to give him the biggest hug and said "It would be ok, he would win the next one"! I had to leave the gym for a while before I could coach or do anything! So please quit bashing my kids...!! Bash me, I can take it! they don't deserve it!

First of all, I'm pretty sure I know the kid you are talking about and he would have certainy wrestled your son if given the opportunity. But that opportunity never came because you yanked your son out of the tourney solely because you were told by his COACH to get out of the seats in the corner because you are NOT a coach at Karns.

Leads me to believe its more about you and not about your son.
