  1. Last night Beech beat Portland 3-2. I wasnt there but that is all the details that I have, wished more scores were posted on here.
  2. Justin Conner- Beech High School, and ya know he aint my kid, we live in Portland.
  3. Portland played two last night against Hendersonville. Both games could have went either way. Name of the game was errors, too many on both sides. Unfortunately, Portland committed more and it cost them both games. They lost the first one 6-3, and the second one went extra innings and they lost 12-11. In the second game Cody Rettich was pitching a great game and was pulled with 2 innings to go, should have been enough with a 10-4 lead, but, errors and walks cost them. I can say, since since I don't have a kid on the team yet, lol, and it wouldn't matter if I did, that I love the fact that Coach Parker is playing Seniors, Juniors, etc. The best 9 play it appears. Ive heard of some schools in the district, where the Sophomores don't even get a chance. That's a shame. Now yes if you have two equal players I would give the nod to the more senior, but that would be the only way. I haven't seen too many high school games this year and don't know everyone's strategy but, is it a new fad for a team to fake bunt and slap hit 12 batters in a row like Hendersonville did last night. Never seen anything like it.....well that's not true, 4 years ago in a district all star game a team from either Pleasant View or Adams, bunted 12 kids in a row....kinda the same thing, lol. It did get Hendersonville 4 runs though, lol. So I guess what ever works, lol. Kids played with heart on both sides and that was quite refreshing, I love players that have heart and are committed, and both sides did have that.
  4. Does anyone know how accurate this is : I all ways like looking at threads with predictions to see who was close or far off. STANDINGS Team Name *W-L-T *Pct. W-L-T Pct. 5. Wow thats what I played with at Cumberland from 85-89, your good.
  6. Maybe in 2012 when they have to have the tamper resistant sticker,it will be more clearer, lol. Beginning January 1, 2012, all bats not made of a single piece of wood shall meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard, and such bats shall be labeled with a silkscreen or other permanent certification mark. The certification mark shall be rectangular, a minimum of a half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color. Aluminum and composite bats shall be labeled as approved tamper evident, and be marked as to being aluminum or composite. This marking shall be silkscreen or other permanent certification mark, a minimum of one-half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color. I hope this doesnt mean the kids/parents/schools that have legal bbcor bats this year for 2011 have to go buy another bat in 2012 just to have the sticker on it.
  7. Portland's Shawn Wheely threw a no hit shut out last night against Macon County winning 11-0. Congrats Shawn!! and all the Portland players. I believe that puts their record at 3-2 on the season.
  8. Has anyone heard how the college teams that are already playing feel about the bbcor bats they are using. I went and watched my alma mater Cumberland University play today against St.Francis, the bbcor's are quite a bit different. The majority of players on Cumberland were using the bbcor Easton Surge and bbcor Easton Rival. The St. Francis team was using mostly the Demarini Voodoo bbcore and the TPX Omaha. The Easton Surge sounded pretty much like a wood bat, couple of balls hit by CU I thought for sure were gone just came up short. No doubt if it had been last year they would have been gone. One player on CU did hit one out with the Easton Surge and it had a good sound and it appeared pretty good pop. The Demarini Voodoo sounded the best and the ball seem to come off of it pretty well also. IF I was having to pic a bbcor bat right now for my son, for the price, the Rival would be hard to beat. The Voodoo by far had the best "metallic" sound though. Thought it was interesting, it was my first game with all bbcor bats. I just wished they would all go wood. lol.....Oh CU won both games and are 4-0 right now.
  9. Here ya go: 2011 Panthers, a fairly young team this year it seems. Even though they are young, the enthusiasm and work ethic seem higher this year. They work out right before us, and it just seems like there is more energy. I know it seems like Coach Parker is working them harder this year. Good luck men. 10. I tried to get a topic started as well, but, all I heard were crickets. From what I have seen, they are going to be a fairly young team this year.
  11. I wont know for sure till maybe tonight. We have several baseball players on our "middle school" baseball team from both East and West that are going to the workouts this week. The way I understand it, the workouts this week will also be the tryouts for incoming freshman..I know it is a balancing act in the spring between baseball(Coach Parker) and Football (Coach Aric) when players need to be at both, so far it seems everyone is scheduling and sharing time so the two sport guys can do both. My hat is off to the both of them.
  12. Update: last night at baseball workouts the 8th graders were telling me, those that are interested in playing high school ball as a Freshman are suppose to report next week, I believe for several days. Coach Parker is still a football coach, (and the Head Baseball coach) but Coach Aric was going to be the coach of the high school team, freshman and jv.....at least thats how the 8th graders understood it, and if they wish to play they must be there....again this came from 13 and 14 yr old boys, so who knows, lol.
  13. I know Portland started working out this week, and lol, initial reports are the conditioning program has went up 1000%. Guys drink plenty of fluids hours before and have a light lunch, lol. Or you will see it again.
  14. I met Coach Parker a few weeks back, but, he and Coach Sanders are the only ones I could pick out. If ya know what the principal looks like, here is a link on facebook, the Portland Progressive did on the awards program. I could also pick out Emilio Almendarez, and Rodney Crabtree, two of the players, maybe this will help. 2010 AWARDS
  15. I dont really know who you are directing this to, but, if it is me, you would be better off if you would take the time to look up my username, Im not hiding behind just a user name, as you are, nor, do I make my email private, as most do here and list my real name under my profile. I have nothing to hide from, and those that know me from Portland know I would never, ever, smirk another mans name. Good day sir......now I see how the other threads were deleted.
  16. I always try and put myself in others shoes...If I was the incoming Coach, was part of the staff last year, and you knew the outgoing coach was going to say a good bye speech, I dont know if I would have attended either. The last thing you want to do as an incoming coach is to take the moment away from the outgoing coach. Give the man the respect to say his goodbyes without you (new incoming guy) being a distraction, I know if I was the outgoing coach, I would like it that way. Just my two cents, it would be a bad situation either way, people would either see it as a distraction that Aric was there, and again if he wasnt. I really feel sorry for both the coaches, there is no right or wrong way how to handle it. The only right way, that I see, is for it to be as minimally distracting as possible for the team. I dont know Aric or Sanders for that matter, but, I honestly think that was the best move for Aric. If that was why he was not there. Bad situation all the way around. God bless them both in their future work.
  17. The only thing I have heard, and that aint much. The present staff is staying on, Coach Parker told our head baseball coach on the Portland Sluggers, he didnt know yet if he was being retained as the 9th grade coach football coach yet. That was 2 weeks ago, and anything could have changed by now. Like I said, I havent heard much. I will just be pulling for them no matter who they are. Tough challenge ahead.
  18. Do I hold the record yet of most threads vanished in a month. Right now 2. Unless I missed something, the last thread was pretty civil. I just dont understand how a thread can go so wrong and every post gets deleted. Oh well, I will just go on record wishing the new coach and his staff all the luck in the world. They have an uphill climb ahead of them, and they need this towns support. Not just in football, but, all the sports. I love this town, my wife lived here here whole life and we have been here as a family going on 20 years. It is the closet I have found to Mayberry RFD. I love that about it. But it kills me to go the high school games and pretty much only see the kin of the kids playing in the stands. Maybe Im just used to how it was when I was in high school in Gallatin, no matter what sport, the stands were filled. I know Gallatin is bigger now, but, in 85, Portland now, is the size of Gallatin then. So please, come support our kids, and mine isnt even there yet. Just come support them. Thanks
  19. Thats how I heard it as well. In 2012 composite, alloy, composite wood, everything but real wood, will have to have a bbcore sticker on it. No grandfather clause apparently.
  20. Do I understand that this year in high school they can use the bats listed, with the BESR sticker, but in 2012 they all have to have the BBCORE sticker on the bat to be legal in high school play, like the NCAA this year (2011).
  21. Portland is now looking for a new head coach. My link
