  1. It can't happen because you can't often get that type of coaching. Webb has coach Hames, there was no volleyball before she came worth anything, won't be after she leaved. Catholic and AC seem to support their volleyball team and they got lucky finding coaches, and smart by continuing with home grown assts. Coach Jones had both Coach Garland and Coach Hames as assts. AC seems to never go outside for their coaches, this creates loyalty.

Another thought. Of the better volleyball schools AC and Catholic seem to have the least involvement with the politics of Club. AC never seems to have any club players (although I heard they are starting their own club this year) and Catholic doesn't seem to push club. Maybe there is something to that?

  2. PhillyAI, you have been right about the Bearden coach for a long time. Do you think starting KVA helped or hurt Bearden volleyball?

As to the coaching situation I want to clarify something. Bearden and Catholic will have to follow two different paths. Bearden is a public school, that is a state employer. By law they have to post the job for ten days then interview the applicants. They can't offer the job to anyone until that occurs. They are also regulated by the TSSAA and Knox county policies which are governed by a union negotiated contract. Someone like Tom is not eligible to be a head coach in a public school unless he meets certain criteria ie, current or former teacher or he has worked as a TSSAA asst for a period of time.

I think, and BBV or HA might know better, that a Knox county school employee gets preference over a non school employee. Catholic can hire anybody they want.

Philly, who are the three being considered? Dave got the job because he worked for the school system, not because of his volleyball ability. The same for Susan at Farragut and Mike at HV. The union would not allow a non certified, non employee to jump the line.

I don't mean that to be harsh, but I think that is the procedure.

  3. I am not taking up for Dave in any way. I was aware, and reported here, that he was leaving months ago. If the parents didn't know he either misled them or they weren't reading coacht.

Respectfully, I don't know who PhillyAI is, and would prefer not knowing or guessing, but I promise you that Shannon is interested in the job, and that there has been talk of her following Dave. I am not advocating that, just saying it like I said Dave was leaving weeks ago.

As far as a "search" I think that is a little naive. The job pays almost nothing, it is alot of work, and it is not that attractive of a position. Catholic is a better job. Just who is going to pay for this search? Who is going to want the job? Beach boy is right, minor sport coaching positions are difficult hires.

PhillyAI, I think you are going to be surprised about the lack of interest by the AD and by applicants. Shannon looks good on paper because of her college experience. What will happen if she is the only applicant?

  4. BBV I am making the same statements that I did weeks ago. Look, this is not a big news story. The local papers are not going to cover these coaching vacancies, nor are the schools going to do a "search" to get a top flight coach.

Dave has been telling people, apparently not the Bearden parents, that he was done after the season as early as this past summer. I don't consider that a "rumor." Same thing with Shannon having been led to believe this is her job if she will take it. It may not come to pass. This is a discussion board. I think it is great that enough people are interested to talk. Who they hire as coach does have an impact on the girls.

There seems to be ill will towards Shannon from PhillyAI who is associated with Bearden. Shannon may not want the job, but I know it is being discussed.

  5. BB, if it weren't for club none of these high schools would be competitive. High school volleyball is thriving BECAUSE of club. Nothing is devisive. It helps the girls, which this is all about, if they play club with great coaches. Bearden and a couple of other schools promoted one club over another. I don't agree with that. Also, a club needs to have top flight coaches.

These schools have an opportunity to reach out to these amazing top tier club coaches and develop competitive high school teams which can't be done unless you go get club coaches who know the sport.

  6. Now that jobs are coming open I think it would be fun to rank the top 10 coaches, high school or club, head or asst, active or currently jobless, in the area. This might help the area ADs when they start interviewing.

  7. Hard Angle, still not getting it unless you are saying Garland didn't quit, he was asked to leave?

2Players, I agree. Clubs are a business run to make money, High School and Colleges run programs to offer students a chance to represent their school and to play for district championships. I have said before, I think it is sad when a high school coach uses the position to put money in his pocket.

Personally, I don't know if KVA is in it for the long haul. Bearden will decide to either build a program or be a club feeder.

  8. I don't know about him being a Bearden graduate, for some reason I thought he was from up north? I like him, alot, but until the reasons concerning the quick exit from Catholic come to light I don't know if the school would consider him. The hiring process in a public school is different from a private. BB, do you know why he quit just before the tournament?

If I were to bet, this morning, I think it will be Mincey at Bearden and Keebler at Catholic although I am hearing that Williams at Lenoir City is also applying to Bearden, and since she already has Knox County experience it may give her an edge.

PhillyAI, before you get on here and say that neither of these two will be hired, I am not pushing anyone for these jobs, and have zero input, but am just discussing what I hear from parents on these boards. Bearden will have to hire someone. The fact is that there are not that many viable candidates. I don't think the school will hire a club coach who is not a teacher other than Shannon because of her friendship with Dave, who is also a principal. I believe he will get alot of say in his replacement. Williams is interesting because she has coached in the Knox County system for a long time. It will be hard not to take her with her experience.

  9. BBV, to my knowledge Dave never made a secret that he was leaving with his daughter. It was talked about on this board moths ago even?

As far as the state ov Bearden volleyball it is about what it has always been. Slightly more than average.

It reminds me of the Karns team four or five years ago that had a great group of girls come thru and had two strong years. When they left the program fell back to what they always were, slightly better than average.

Bearden had a great group of players. Dave didn't change anything, or make it better, did he?

What do they need to do get better. Right now you have Webb, Anderson County, Farragut and Catholic that are established programs that are competitive year in year out. Harding Valley is knocking on the door and CAK, if they can show the next couple of years that they are good after the big girl left then they are there. Bearden has a LONG way to go. If the are objecting to Shannon then they have a real problem. Tom could not coach a high school team. The AC assistants don't appear to be interested. Who is left?

  10. I knew he had announced but hadn't heard it directly from him, so I didn't want to say I had. That's why I thought the easiest thing would be for BBV to simply ask Dave because it wasnt a secret.

I think Keeble is a better fit at Catholic. Bearden is not a premier program yet, but has potential. I don't think Dave helped it, I actually think he has created alot of distrust among the parents which will take time to heal.

Tom would be a ... Challenge. I love him, but his behavior wouldn't be tolerated at a public school, and I don't know how good he would do building a program, A mom, who I trust, says the school will accept Shannon. Several parents are against this but some support it.

  11. BBV, why is this wrong? High school coaches don't receive contracts. They serve at the whim of the principal who can dismiss them for any reason. When did Dave promise to stay at Bearden past his daughter's graduation? He Idid an ok job while he was their, but I don't believe he ever promised to be in it for the long haul. Running a club takes alot of time. How long was Garland at Catholic before he resigned? You aren't questioning him.

Back to topic, who will be the next coaches. Surely you other posters have ideas?
