  1. BB you have made me rethink a couple of things. So did my "coach" spouse. A high school or college coach has many more hats to wear other than just running practice. They also have to teach and develop players as opposed to coach players that already know how to play which is hard. I was also reminded that in public high schools they have to take what they have as opposed to recruiting.

Lets assume, for argument sake, that we can all agree that K2 has 4-5 top level coaches, not already coaching high school. KVA has 1. In High school you have Hames at Webb, Add in Garland and the AC coaches,, Petrick and Foster at Oak Ridge. That gives you 10-15 to service all high school and club teams. There are not enough bodies.

I like what you said about not training coaches. Other than Anderson County no other school seems to produce any assistant coaches who go on to coach ( or for that matter even have asst coaches) and based on what you and other posters have said has more to do with the longevity of their program, and how there school supports (and pays ) for quality coaching.

Just playing college ball does not make you a coach. So where do Bearden, Catholic and the other schools go? If the AC assts aren't in play ( and I still don't believe that but I will trust you) then it has to be a coach wiling to move from one high school to another, or a club coaching making the leap.

  2. I think the easiest would be to simply ask Dave? This is not a college job. Other than football coaches, high school coaches leave all of the time. Most people don't care. They don't make the paper, and they don't try and get a replacement. Sometimes they can't get coaches and they simply don't have a team. There is no real conspiracy, and I don't think it has anything to do with his integrity. Volleyball coaches (or coaches for sports other than football or basketball) don't get paid anything. Parents are a nightmare to deal with, some times, and there is no incentive to stay. Most don't last five years. It is a thankless job. If you really love volleyball you coach club. It pays more, you have way less hassle from parents, and you don't do anything but coach.

BB I agree that there have been some amazing people that coach high school ball, they develop traditions, and really know how to teach and coach volleyball, but I think that day has passed. The younger coaches will go the club route. Not just in volleyball but in all smaller sports. You get what you get...what can Bearden offer a real coach? Nothing, unless they want a high school teaching job.

That's why I have been encouraging parents to get involved. The AD at Bearden isn't going to do a search for the new coach. Neither will Catholic. They just hope to get someone to actually apply. Do any area schools really support their volleyball program? Do any area coaches really have any interest in making their program better?

BBV look at Karns. Did you have a great team because of the AD and coach, or was it because you had five or six really good players happen to come thru at the same who played club. Same with CAK and Farragut this year. When those players leave what is to stop them from going back to average like Karns.

Dave wanted to be with his daughter. Why is that wrong? No Knoxville school really supports their volleyball team, and if parents don't recruit the coaches don't expect our AD to do it.

  3. BBV I don't have a dog in any of these high school jobs. Everyone knew Dave was stepping down, he made no secret of this. I WAS surprised that Andrew quit. CAK's coach is on the bubble, but the State win may have gotten him another year. High school coaches don't seem to stay as long, I think they get alot of pressure from parents.

I believe you will see more turn over. I think Powell will flip with the Asst Coach taking over, I think Grace will come open and I think you will see a couple of more schools open up. Now back to the problem, where do you get the coaches?

PhillyAI says Mincey has zero shot. She won't say why, but I can't believe they won't hire her. No one seems to want any of the other coaches from other schools so what do you do?

I think parents, if their daughter is going to stay, should be active. Bearden is going to have the most problems. They don't really have an established program. It is not an attractive job. One thought would be Susan transfer their from Farragut which would open up Farragut. Tom might take that job. The Hames won't leave Webb, and BB says none of the AC assts won't leave (which I find hard to believe) so who is left?

I still say pull the player let them do training for club if you don't have a quality high school coach. I still like Williams from Lenoir City coming to Bearden. Philly AI doesn't want her either. At the end of he day you have to take someone.

  4. I think the promise was made by the current coach. Again, this is all second hand, but I believe it was understood that when he left, after his daughter graduated, she could slip into his place.

Also, I don't believe that there are any high school coaches as good as the four club coaches I referenced.

  5. I think Shannon will apply if she has some assurance that she will get the job. Philly AI seems to has some insight into Bearden that they don't want her which is odd. I don't think Bearden could do any better. Jason I believe will apply for multiple jobs. I don't know about the other two, I imagine that they have their plate pretty full.

BB, by your silence I assume that you agree that there are no area coaches who are the caliber of the four I mentioned. I

PhillyAI, I agree that KVA may be in trouble. You can't charge the fees they charge to be in a warehouse with recent high school grads as coaches. Parents expect more, and the girls should receive more.

  6. PhillyAI, do you have insight into the Bearden job? I am hearing that it has been promised to Mincey? Why won't she get it?

The problem with Bearden is that it is not that attractive of a job. They had a good group come thru with a great setter but no real history. I have heard Garland is not interested in coaching next year. If you don't take Mincey who are you going to get?

  7. BB I am also concerned about the club roster of coaches. KVA seems to have mainly young girls who played high school ball but who have no coaching experience. However, there are 4 club coaches who, in my opinion, are well prepared and would be superior to any area high school coaches except Webb. Steve Dallman, Tom Pazko, Shannon Mincey and Jason Keeble.

I believe it is harder to coach a competitive club. BB, name me four high school coaches, other than the Webb coach, with the experience of these four club coaches. I don't think you can do it.

I believe if Mincey wants the Bearden job it's hers. Williams or Keeble are possible fits for Catholic. If CAK opens I don't know, maybe Alves, the middle school coach?

    Thoughts.

  8. The News Sentinel today announced that Coach Garland was out at Catholic. 2Players and other posters have commented on the worst kept secret in town that Coach McGinnis was stepping down at Bearden. Other jobs are coming open (probably 3 or 4) but where will the coaches come from?

As I have said before, high school coaching is not that strong. Parents will start pulling their daughters. Why are there no good high school coaches

    .

  9. Why would one of the three AC coaches who aren't the head coach not leave. I can see why the head coach wouldn't leave, they seem to have awesome support and a rich history, but all three of the assts can't expect to get the job when the head coach steps down.

Shannon Mincey may be a good fit for Bearden. Do you think Catholic could get Coach Jones back? What about Carmen Foster at Oak Ridge?

  10. BB, I agree 100 percent! Big Loss.

I am still hearing that the Bearden and CAK jobs may come open. Nothing bad, just that the Bearden coach is working hard to build KVA and his daughter graduated, and the CAK coach wants some family time. Much deserved after a state championship.

The well is not deep, especially if the other two jobs come open.

Coach Williams from LC may be interested in Catholic. A couple of the club coaches may try, but some schools are hesitant to hire non falcuty coaches. Anderson County has four coaches I am sure three of them want head coaching jobs so I would expect at least one will apply.

    BB who are you hearing?

  11. Farragut wouldnt win state with the best coach in the state.  They don't have the talent top to bottom that the best teams in the state do. Brentwood, Ravenwood, Siegel etc just have more talent.   Still not sure why they never come to middle tennessee. They typically come to the state and get hammered, i think many times because they have been playing poor competition for most of the year.  11 AAA top four is typically better than the half of the teams that qualify for the state.

THIS is why you don't have parents and coaches get on these boards and talk trash that their team cannot back up. I have, and I doubt anyone else has, ever considered Seigal to be an elite team. In fairness, the same could be said about Farragut. This was a break thru year, and it may be the push they need to BECOME an elite team.

Clifford, there is zero excuse for an adult to say that these girls don't have the talent of these other teams when all season the top two teams in ALL classifications has been the two who are in the state finals.

On that line, some years the most talented team is an AA team or a private. Not this year, but some years. Sir, you didn't represent your girls, who played great, very well at all. And no disrespect, we don't have to travel to middle TN to be challenged. CAK, Catholic, Sullivan South, Bearden, Anderson County , Dobbins Bennett, and Webb are great volleyball schools. 10 years ago your statement may be half true, but not today, in what might be an East Tenn sweep.

Great job to all of the East Tenn teams!

  12. I don't know. It is hard to find quality coaches. Most established programs don't have a good head coach let alone a good asst. I am going to say what I am hearing, and this is 100 percent rumors from parents and may have zero reliability, so take it for what's its worth, which may be zero!

Catholic has to hire a coach. I am hearing that Bearden coach will resign now that his daughter graduated to focus on club. The CAK coach may step down to spend more time with family now that the big girl and several other good players are leaving. The Farragut parents, some, want a change if they don't make the finals at state.

Garland would be a choice for all jobs, his pick. Hames won't leave Webb, she is Catholics first choice. There are no other choices out there but parents at two schools want to contact one of the AC coaches. I don't know which one?
