  1. Was taking a look at Baylor's results from some tournament in Alabama last weekend. It showed them having a new kid at 182 named Cole Hollaway. That name sounds familiar for some reason. Don't know if he's any good but at least they won't have to forfeit that weight this time against FR.

Cole Hollaway: 2011 State Champ at 103 and 2015 State Champ at 182… now that's a good story, if I've ever heard one.

  2. David Helton was one heck of a scrambler and cradle-man, personally trained by Mark Leen (Jordan Leen's dad).  He was a 3 time state-medalist, who won his state championship as a junior and then didn't compete as a senior because he wanted to stay healthy for college football. He also gave up his senior state championship to let John Mackey start at 215 (ended up getting second in an upset state finals match, Mackey plays football at Furman University) and B-teamer Barrett Gouger win his state championship at 285 (plays football at Vanderbilt University). Looking forward to watching this classy guy get drafted in the NFL.

  3.

Again, who did Pop loose his two matches to?  I know he beat Garrett Alexander in the finals of the McCallie tournament (Alexander did not place in D1, not close to being in top 6).  Who else did he get beat by?  Dooley and Klingingsmith less losses combined.

Also,  McCallie tournament "The 152-pound bout, with Soddy-Daisy's Gage Richmond rallying to decision Baylor's Blake Sutherland 6-4 in overtime, was voted best match by the coaches. Richmond scored a tying reversal shortly before the third-period whistle, then won with a quick takedown in OT"

145 lb junior  Luke Hamilton pinned Gage Richmond in a very lopsided match to win the state.

No question D1 head and shoulders over D2

    http://intermatwrestle.com/rankings/hs/160

He got beat by the #14 and #19 in the country. One in overtime and one by regular decision. Baylor took a road trip to Illinois in January. All that records tell you is the type of competition you wrestle. Popp hasn't lost to anyone from TN since the State Finals in 2012 vs. Baker. There are 2 freshmen who are starting at NC state and Army that he beat last year. If you don't think he'd place/win in D1, you're crazy.

  4. sorry no way..  138 may hang.. but at 160#  the d11 champ would not be in the top 6.  look at the history and the numbers.  Popp is a good wrestler,  but he would not be in the to 6 in DI.  Garret Alexander did not even place, Cotton did not place....you think Popp could?  2nd place  Naughten.... he got pinned three times in the first period by the D1 champ.

Popp is a great kid and  a good wrestler, but he is no where close to Kingensmith that took second or Alexander that did not place.

Popp beat Alexander 11-1 at the McCallie invitational. He put Alexander on his back 4 times and cut him once. Alexander fished the whole match.

Popp placed 4th at Powerade Invitational in PA last year as a Junior, which is a FloNationals event, and he's much better this year than he was last year.

  6. Jackhole? Bad day? At least bring something to the conversation other than insults. By the way, "I don't know" = less than nothing.

Oliver was so far above his opponents and clearly on another level. I don't recall the people sitting behind me Oooing and ahhhing over any other wrestler. His dominance was unmistakeable and obvious.

People were probably not "oooing and ahhhing" over Popp because they didn't get to see him wrestle. His entire tournament consisted of 3 mins and 1 sec. If you blinked, you might've missed it. I guess the OW is given to the guy who puts on the best takedown show and not to the guy who tries to get the most team points.

  7. You give awards to the most deserving athlete regardless of grade even if the kid is a 3rd grader.  Oliver showed that he was the best wrestler not only in D2 but in the whole tournament and he has the credentials to back it up.

Is tech falling 2 guys in the 2nd period more deserving than 3 first period pins? What credentials are you referring to then? I realize that he's nationally ranked, but what does that have to do with this tournament?

  8. It appears 182 is still incorrect. Decision, not pin in finals. Big win for Hagey & ripening Radishes in February...

Why did they put a photo of Zach Watson in the paper? He graduated 2 years ago.

  9. canada was

definitley a huge upset even though Simpson majored him last year… that's not an upset

I think Sommers was thinking Caleb Canada was Caleb Powell (at 132). It's not his fault though because Mr. Moseley and the other Father Ryan announcer were calling Caleb Powell "Canada" the whole match on the live stream. Not saying this to cause drama; just trying to clarify who is who.

  10. Without Murphy & huge upset of Canada

I wouldn't consider Simpson over Canada at 126 as a huge upset. Maybe Wesnofske over Powell at 132 who was beating him before he got pinned.

Ryan came to wrestle and Baylor looked a little sluggish. The reffing was embarrassing. It'll be interesting to see this match in one month with 106, 112 (if Murphy), 132, and 152 being crucial swing matches.

  11. Another one to add to the list is the 170 pounder, Seagraves. I don't think he's lost to anyone in TN. He was 4th at McCallie behind 2 Georgia state champs and a FL kid. He majored Oliver (Cleveland) and teched #6 Adams (Bradley). The kid is slick on his feet and will give Hagey (Father Ryan) a great match tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the state finals match as well.

  12. 1) Baylor: 10 Seeds (10 Top 3)

    2) Cleveland: 10 Seeds (5 Top 3)

    3) Pope: 10 Seeds (4 Top 3)

    4) Alexander: 8 Seeds (2 Top 3)

    5) McCallie: 5 Seeds (4 Top 3)

I'm betting that's the order they'll finish in too. I can see Pope jumping up to 2nd and McCallie up to 4th, but champion and top 3 teams look like they have a solid gap on the rest of the pack. Hopefully plenty of upsets will mix this up.

  13. How was Quinn Miller of Archer at 195?  I haven't had a chance to see him, but heard he's one tough 9th grader........was a 9 time youth state champion.....and brother of former Parkview wrestler Jesse Miller.

He tech-falled the Baylor senior, Norred, who is a D2 state placer, in the second period. The Cleveland stud, West, could only major decision Norred. So I'd say the freshman is legitimately tough.

  14. 1. Baker (CBHS)

    2. Oliver (CBHS)

    3. Marchetti (FR)

    4. West (CLV)

    5. Bryson Popp= 2X state medalist, finalist last year. 4th at Powerade. Big wins over D1 state champ Aaron Lopez and GA state champ Chad Pyke (has over 300 career wins and has signed with NC State). Only Southeast losses to GA state champ Taylor Lujan (McCallie Invite OW) and a close match with 4X AL state champ Brandon Womack (Science Hill OW)

    6. Brandon Brunner= 3X state champion. 6th at Powerade. Big wins over D1 #2 Williamson (SD), D1 #3 Taylor (CLV), D2 #2 Akers (twice), and GA state champ Chandler Pyke (over 200 career wins). Only Southeast loss to GA stud freshman Chris Diaz (Archer)

    7. Gray

  15. 130, 140 and 152 should be interesting. Each weight class has 6 returning medalist in each.

Don't forget about 119. There are 6 returning medalists there too. 2 of 'em wrestle in the first round of the tournament, and the two returning state champs are on the same side of the bracket.

  16. Jarrell (MBA) vs. Helton (Bay) at 189 will be the best match. Both times that they wrestle, it's a high-scoring, seesaw, roll-around, one-point match (both times 9 to 8 with each winning once) that is decided in the last few seconds. There may be 3 or 4 other one or two point matches that are exciting, but this will be by far the best one.

  17. Basically there are 2 dominate teams in DII

McCallie and MUS- it's pretty much just between those 2 at state

But it is going to be a huge dogfight for 3rd

I'd say either Baylor, Knox Webb, or USN

and right behind them are Brentwood Academy and Father Ryan who both have a huge gap problem between their 4th and 5th men

so I believe in the end...

    1. McCallie

    2. MUS

    3. Baylor

    4. USN

    5. Know Webb

    6. Father Ryan

    7. Brentwood Academy

    8. MBA

    9. CBHS

  18. At 119 this weekend, we have Dunning, Prater, Goins, Banks, and Hussein.  How will these kids be seeded and who will be the final four or two or one...

    825485200[/snapback]

Hussein isn't wrestling for some reason; some tough, scrappy freshman is wrestling instead for Baylor.

  19. Baylors vs. McC.:

    103- Baylor (6 pts.)

    112- Baylor (6 pts.)

119- Baylor (close match) (3 pts.)

    125- Baylor (6 pts.)

130- McC. (close match) (3 pts.)

135- Baylor (close match) (3 pts.)

    140- McC. (4 pts.)

    145- Baylor (3 pts.)

    152- McC. (3 pts.)

160- Baylor (close match) (3 pts.)

    171- McC. (4 pts.)

    189- Baylor (4 pts.)

    215- McC. (6 pts.)

275- McC. (close match) (3 pts.)

    Baylor- 34, McC.- 23

Baylor's got it this year
