  1. Cole Hollaway: 2011 State Champ at 103 and 2015 State Champ at 182… now that's a good story, if I've ever heard one.
  2. David Helton was one heck of a scrambler and cradle-man, personally trained by Mark Leen (Jordan Leen's dad). He was a 3 time state-medalist, who won his state championship as a junior and then didn't compete as a senior because he wanted to stay healthy for college football. He also gave up his senior state championship to let John Mackey start at 215 (ended up getting second in an upset state finals match, Mackey plays football at Furman University) and B-teamer Barrett Gouger win his state championship at 285 (plays football at Vanderbilt University). Looking forward to watching this classy guy get drafted in the NFL.
  3. http://intermatwrestle.com/rankings/hs/160 He got beat by the #14 and #19 in the country. One in overtime and one by regular decision. Baylor took a road trip to Illinois in January. All that records tell you is the type of competition you wrestle. Popp hasn't lost to anyone from TN since the State Finals in 2012 vs. Baker. There are 2 freshmen who are starting at NC state and Army that he beat last year. If you don't think he'd place/win in D1, you're crazy.
  4. Popp beat Alexander 11-1 at the McCallie invitational. He put Alexander on his back 4 times and cut him once. Alexander fished the whole match. Popp placed 4th at Powerade Invitational in PA last year as a Junior, which is a FloNationals event, and he's much better this year than he was last year.

  6. People were probably not "oooing and ahhhing" over Popp because they didn't get to see him wrestle. His entire tournament consisted of 3 mins and 1 sec. If you blinked, you might've missed it. I guess the OW is given to the guy who puts on the best takedown show and not to the guy who tries to get the most team points.
  7. Is tech falling 2 guys in the 2nd period more deserving than 3 first period pins? What credentials are you referring to then? I realize that he's nationally ranked, but what does that have to do with this tournament?
  8. Not to take anything from Oliver, but I thought they should've given Popp the OW since he pinned every opponent in the first period. They both deserve it for their dominating performances, but Oliver is a junior and can get it next year.
  9. Why did they put a photo of Zach Watson in the paper? He graduated 2 years ago.

  11. I think Sommers was thinking Caleb Canada was Caleb Powell (at 132). It's not his fault though because Mr. Moseley and the other Father Ryan announcer were calling Caleb Powell "Canada" the whole match on the live stream. Not saying this to cause drama; just trying to clarify who is who.
  12. I wouldn't consider Simpson over Canada at 126 as a huge upset. Maybe Wesnofske over Powell at 132 who was beating him before he got pinned. Ryan came to wrestle and Baylor looked a little sluggish. The reffing was embarrassing. It'll be interesting to see this match in one month with 106, 112 (if Murphy), 132, and 152 being crucial swing matches.
  13. Another one to add to the list is the 170 pounder, Seagraves. I don't think he's lost to anyone in TN. He was 4th at McCallie behind 2 Georgia state champs and a FL kid. He majored Oliver (Cleveland) and teched #6 Adams (Bradley). The kid is slick on his feet and will give Hagey (Father Ryan) a great match tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the state finals match as well.
  14. 1) Baylor: 10 Seeds (10 Top 3) 2) Cleveland: 10 Seeds (5 Top 3) 3) Pope: 10 Seeds (4 Top 3) 4) Alexander: 8 Seeds (2 Top 3) 5) McCallie: 5 Seeds (4 Top 3) I'm betting that's the order they'll finish in too. I can see Pope jumping up to 2nd and McCallie up to 4th, but champion and top 3 teams look like they have a solid gap on the rest of the pack. Hopefully plenty of upsets will mix this up.
  15. He tech-falled the Baylor senior, Norred, who is a D2 state placer, in the second period. The Cleveland stud, West, could only major decision Norred. So I'd say the freshman is legitimately tough.
