  1. Halls?

I have not seen Webb, Farragut, or Maryville, but I would disagree with Halls being anywhere near the top 10. Oak Ridge would have to be ahead of them. Also, I have not seen Catholic since early in the season, so maybe they have improved. But Halls?

  2. I guess to be a part of this forum you must have been blessed enough to have bought a home in a school district that has a really good volleyball program. It does not matter rather you like or dis-like club ball. If volleyball was left up to the high school coaches alone, then Tennessee would be even further down the ladder then we already are. If you are lucky enough to be in a school that actually cares about volleyball instead of using it as a conditioning sport for basketball, then I am happy for you. But, if you are very serious about volleyball and happen to be in a rural area that is lucky to even have a program, then you might see what my shoes feel like a little.

We could have moved into a better athletic school, but then my children have to move schools, start new friends, etc. I dont think that is right, to move just because of sports. That is why we have club ball. I would have loved to have my kids coached by great school coaches in middle school and high school and not had to use club. I would have loved to kept all that money and vacation time and used it for something else like college tuition, home improvements, new cars, or something else. But, my kids love to play and want to learn the sport to the fullest, and play it more than just 3 months a year.

We are having a good time with high school. Our coach really tries and does a pretty good job for the amount of support we get. My only gripes have been playing seniors instead of the better players, but that is not much to gripe about. I have only reponded to posts that I thought I had something to say. I cant talk much about going out of town with our school team and competing with middle Tennessee teams, or finishing in the top of our district with the chances of going to regionals and state. Thats not going to happen. But its OK.

I just like to see activity in the threads.

  3. I just dont understand how a high school coach can ask her team to give 100% if the coach isnt willing to as well. The players are trying their best to pass, set, and hit the ball. They are doing everything in their power to help their team and get a point. If the coach is not playing the ones that are the best players on the team (at that given time), then the coach is not giving 100% and letting the players down.

  4. As far as HV goes, I heard their jv has beat their varsity. If that is the case, then I would say the coaching is not up to par because they are not playing the best players. That is one thing I left off about my opinion of high school ball is the coach's desire to play upper classmen above better players. I totally understand school ball is about learning the sport, playing times, etc. I think that all plays a part in middle school, junior varsity, practice, play days, etc. But, varsity games should be only about winning - period.

Even so there are approx. five clubs in the area, The two front runners seem to be K2 and Phoenix Rising. I have looked on the SRVA website and noticed that most if not all "1" teams from K2 were ranked higher than any of the PR teams. If you have a player that may be a little weak in the position she wants to play in, you are probably better off with a smaller club, because you have a better chance to talk to the coach and have her play the position she wants as opposed to a larger club that has a larger "pool" to pull from and may have her playing something else.

This club may be perfect for us and not the best fit for another. Luckily, most tryouts happen in a way that you can go to more than one club and get a "feel" before committing.

  5. No I am not a Farragut parent. We like club ball because of there is much less drama, much better teams to play and better tournaments, and because everyone on the team is committed to volleyball instead of just playing it because it is in the season. Most of the time, from my experience, high school coaches are not as good as an average club coach. Schools like AC are the exception because of being able to take mostly non club players and teach them to beat teams that play volleyball 12 months a year.

Is it worth the cost? Depends on your goals I guess. I do think that if your going to pay for club, then you might as well find the top club in your area. No reason to half-do-it.

  6. This is ONLY a problem because of the 80 percent of Americans whom believe in God, only about 10 percent of them (if that much) are activists. The other 70 percent or so dont ever talk to their congressmen, senators, news papers, news stations, etc. The silent majority needs to WAKE UP! Stop being complacent, while all OUR freedoms are being trampled on by a select few (and the antichrist ACLU).

No one is talking about the first amendment rights of the coaches. They are not to lead or participate in prayer WITH the players or students. If they feel the need to bow their head, talk to their GOD, away from students and players, they should have every right to do so. And if the law says different, then refer to my first paragraph, it needs to be changed. Just because something is law does not make it right.

  7. I agree that playing "club" makes a big difference. Unfortunately, all high school coaches are not on the same level. Some know how to teach basic fundamentals, and some do not. Some know how to get each player to give her best, and some do not. Some high school coaches know how to play the best 6 girls at that given time, and some are too worried about playing the upper classmen.

I know that there are high school volleyball coaches out there that can teach a good athelete how to play well enough to get to play in college without any "travel ball". But, I feel they are the minority. The only way some girls will ever be seen by a college coach or scout is at a club tournament. Unfortunately, many parents can not afford this, even when they sometimes have one of the best "coachable" players.

Our middle school was too involved with basketball, and used volleyball as a conditioning sport for it. Nobody thought that volleyball was a "serious" enough sport to be committed to it. So we end up with players that are just learning to pass the ball in high school!

I am so excited to see how volleyball has been improving in Tennessee, especially East Tennessee. I only hope that the clubs in town can get to the level where they are able to have "non travel" teams and keep the costs down for some of the parents, but still allow more than 3 months of play time per year.

  8. I dont know if maybe AC was down a little last night or they are not quite as good as I thought they were, but after watching Clinton stay with them the whole time, AC looks like they can be beat. Karns has lost some size and age, even so, they were still playing pretty good. I wish the best for AC, and I know how they continually improve as the season goes on, but they were showing some weakness last night.
