  1. Other than observing for a decade or two, I don't have a dog in this hunt either. But I must admit I find Mr. Satterfield's position a bit of a difference from past performance in other sports, specifically football where there is a long and distinguished history of coaching in his own family lineage.

There seems to be great distress among the TC fans about Goodpasture being in their district, that their teams (other than football) might be at a great disadvantage and, therefore, potentially suffer embarassing losses. If that is the case, consider the facts:

For the four season period of 2008-2011, the latest records I can access, TC averaged 9.25 wins in the regular season, winning those games by an average of 35.4 and including scores of: 77-0, 69-21, 60-0, 52-6, 55-8, 68-0, 50-0, 66-12, and 59-6. Twenty-one times in that run the Jackets have posted scores of 45 points or more.

It is only an observation, but it would appear that as long as TC can be the big fish in the little pond, pounding on schools around the Plateau, things are good and right. But when the pond expands, it's time to circle the cover or take our fins and go home.

As for being the smallest area in the state, I wonder if that really matters to the folks at Pickett County. Playing three times in the four year period TC won all three by a combined 241-0. And it has not yet been pointed out that Goodpasture, as a private institution, has a classification enrollment almost twice its' true enrollment thanks to the 1.8 multiplier.

Not that it falls within my personal set of beliefs, but one term comes to mind: Karma. Or the desperate attempt to avoid the perceived potential of facing it.

  2.

As a side note, I never understood why McGavock, one of the largest high schools in the state, has never been a power in football or basketball power even at the Metro level.

Uhh...might want to check back a while. "Never" is a terrible qualifier, if you've been around here more than 25 years or so. Since then....they've had their struggles.

Ask around about Wes Elrod and Joe Allen...:)

  3. did you take note how quiet the CHS faithful has been since the beat down to reality from INDY...

too many of you wanted to give Rector the keys to the city , you drank each others tainted kool-aid on just how good CHS is -Truth your average - Boro beat you......

Gold Dome...sorry, but I couldn't resist: Wonder how quiet the IHS faithful will be now that they have beat down into reality by RAVENWOOD?

Seriously, good luck, but man, your timing was not good on this one......

  4. Actually, Owl, it does refer, technically, to football also. However, within each of the three classifications are a set of two sub classifications (1A and 2A in "A", 3 and 4 A in "AA", etc). If you think that's confusing, wait until you try to figure out the play-off system.

Too many "state championship" football trophies...but somebody makes big bucks off of it

  5. And nobody has mentioned Carlton Flatt yet? Or are we dealing with public schools only. Really hate to bring it up, don't want to start the public/private issue, but Flatt did grab more gold balls than anybody else, IRRC.

Also, the coach at Germantown for so long...and kick me, my old age is showing because I can't pull the name off the tip of my tongue.

Boyce Smith, Jerry Pearson, Calvin Short...great start of mid-state coaches who belong. This list could get long...

  6. Ravenwood has the same talent base (Nolensville) they had when they won a state championship. The administration IS the problem. They ran off some great coaches, didnt work with some to give them the support they needed to run high level programs so they left, cowtowed to complaining parents that thought jr was the star when jr realistically could not do much more than keep a helmet off the grass, hired a felon that got released a month later, and got stuck hiring a guy that was on the bottom of the list just to get a hire made.

Maryville does it with a great long term coach who has built the expectation to always win all the way down through the rug rat programs. Having an easy out of zone tuition policy in place by the school district helps a whole lot too.

Back--one correction to your post. The "phantom coach", as I call him, was not a felon. He had a misdemeanor charge as a youthful offender (senior in HS, but 18 as I recall) that was supposedly expunged when he finished his diversion and community service. It wasn't and the H.R. department at the Central Office found it...he had not disclosed it, sooooo....he was considered to have falsified his app. Bizarre situation all the way around.

Again, my only point is that it was a misdemeanor, not a felonly. Big difference...easy mistake....

  7. I'm pretty sure they played to a 14-14 tie in 2007 in the controversial thunderstorm game. Never finished the ball game.

NCS...I think you are right! But neither school lists the game, making me think (as I recall) it was washed from the "offical" schedule as more of a pre-season, special event kind of game. Pre-season Clinic Bowl maybe...at Vandy as I recall.....

Since they only got one half in (more less) and never finished, it was never counted as a decision or game of any kind. I could be corrected...

  8. Hillsboro beat Franklin 28-0 in the 1977 season. Franklin won 35-30 in 1978. The Rebels have won four straight over Hillsboro since reclassification in 2008. The series goes back to at least 1968 (as far as I can find records), with Franklin going 1-4 from 1968-72, (Franklin was 17-33-1 during that stretch, ). The two did not play again until 2008. Franklin was 40-12 during the last four years overall, Hillsboro 24-23, but that includes 2008 when the Burros went 13-2, winning the state championship with losses to Franklin and MBA. Guess that makes them 11-21 over the last three years.

    Franklin leads the series 6-5.

  9. Nash,

Maybe you need to read your own post where you apparently agree with swami's assessment of the behavior of the FHS kids. To suggest that I have taken your post out of context is simply dishonest. Feel free to say whatever you think you need to in order to defend a failing institution and bring down one that has exhibited success for over 100 years.

Maybe you should focus your frustration towards the failing administration of chs instead of debating the proven success of FHS. It would probably be more productive. Just a thought.

"Failing administration of chs"? You truly have no earthly idea, do you? Get back to football because either you truly are clueless about administration at the two institutions or you're trying to grind an axe. Come to think of it...just 18 posts...a new screen name...could you have had a different name the past couple of seasons....hmmmm

    Get back to football.......

  10. WitchDoctor say this thread very quiet. Where all Rebel fans? Franklin really scared of Cougars?

    "Bones never lie"

WD--I think the silence is an indication of two very good coaches keeping their charges on very, very short leashes. Everybody understands what, from at least a pyschological and pride standpoint, this game means.

Gonna be a great one. Wish I could be there......

  11. Individually, Franklin High freshman Libby Sugg has 15 dingers (all on fields of 205-220), not counting 3 more she hit in pre-season "play-days". Not sure on the team total.

As of Friday, May 4 she was hitting .596 with 15 homers and 52 RBI in 32 games.

  12. I apologize for original post. My question was more in fact of when do you actually start collecting stats for the season, not methodology that you use to keep the stats. I have used Turbo Stats, Excel, IScore, GameChanger, etc..? Kind of like if there is an umpire do you keep the stats for tha annual total, even though it is a tournament or playday or do you wait until season actually starts to start official stats? Or Stats just from district games, etc.

Typically I'll keep "unofficial stats" for pre-season, play days, scrimmages, etc., for the coaches. Once the opening scheduled game starts, I keep a separate running set that can be broken into season, district, post-season, etc. At the end of the year I'll let the coach decide if they want to include the "pre-season" stuff. Only had one take me up on it. Of course, this is our fourth new head coach in four years, so......

  13. I use excel(2010) to do the same i would like to get other people programs and compare to the one i made up if you are intrested email to slybigbuck@aol.com

This is the fith year I have used a "package program" called "Turbo Stats" (hope that doesn't violate any posting rules...). It has made the issue of stats so much easier, but there are several quality programs on the market.

I keep the game on a Palm Pilot and when I get home, download and bang! In three minutes I can print a box score, scoresheets and a running play-by-play. Better than that, it keeps all the running stats for the year and I can break it out by preseason, tournament, post season, regular season, district, etc.

It is much more indepth than I need; you could keep hundreds of teams and thousands of games if you were running a league. I just don't need that much power, working with one team.

Having played with excel, I'll bet you've got one that will work just as well. It's all that programing the macros that drives me nuts.

  14. You missed the whole point joenmsusa.

    Clayton's handling of his "favored" boosters IS a big deal, and it makes one ask the question(s);

"How many other boosters have paid their way into Craig's good graces? and how often has money and under-the-table favors influenced his decisions? Or how many kids have been forgotten and passed over just like Joe R. in the past?"

Maybe you accentuated the wrong point in your original post. You were strong in your statement: "The head coach at Franklin High School is always concerned with playing politics to gain booster support, and now his favoritism is affecting high school kids in different counties."

That was followed by: "And that is how two high school athletes from Franklin High were selected over a future SEC football player from Henry County."

So was all this just to deflect you're concern about Ramirez or is it the basis of your arguement? I must admit I am confused, especially when my research shows your screen name to be "brand new" and you first three posts were exactly the same on three different threads.

  15. In other news Franklin related news....

(Franklin & Williamson County followers pay close attention)

It is time to air some dirty laundry. Craig Clayton used all his influence to get Riley Cathey & David Page a spot on this allstar team. Niether of which even has a single offer to play at the next level. It is a funny coincidence that both Page and Cathey's parents are the leading boosters of Clayton's coffers (Coincidence? I think not) The head coach at Franklin High School is always concerned with playing politics to gain booster support, and now his favoritism is affecting high school kids in different counties.

But the web of lies spreads farther. Joe Ramirez of Franklin, who many would consider the best defensive player in Williamson County and the best football player at Franklin High School was "oddly" forgetten in the shuffle and somehow not selected. Franklin followers have been baffled by this "miss-selection". When in reality, Craig Clayton did not even submit Joe Ramirez as a candidate for the team. Craig Clayton only submitted Riley Cathey & David Page. Even though he has claimed that Joe R. was not selected by Ron Crawford and his staff which is a lie! Craig Clayton passed over his best player in order to please his boosters and buy support in a time of trouble for him.

Craig Clayton has convinced himself and his paying customers that Riley Cathey and David Page are great football players, but 393 college coaches disagree. Because none of these kids has yet to recieve an offer or committ to a FBS, FCS, or Division II school yet. And that is how two high school athletes from Franklin High were selected over a future SEC football player from Henry County.

    Three quick thoughts:

    1) Joe Ramirez is a hoss who can play. He doesn't need any exposure in an all-star game to prove that. Agreed, would have been nice, and I don't understand his exclusion, but all-star games are, by their very nature, politically saturated;

    2) As for Page and Cathey and Clayton, it's his job as a head coach to promote his kids. Maybe there is more to it, but if that's the route he took, so be it. Let the Franklin folks handle it;

    3) You're from Henry County, right?

  16. For the Centennial posters Hyperbole means exaggeration. I beleive everything that has been posted on this thread could be considered hyperbole, however, there was a news story on the Gang (hispanic) problems at CHS. So to point fingers at any school and try and point out their flaws is rediculous. Every school has problems but like it or not every school in Williamson County is a quality school. CHS, BHS, IHS, FHS, PHS, FwHS, SHS, RHS it doesn't matter because when it comes crunch time our schools thrive.

Finally, common ground in the last two sentences.

  17.

So we have learned that Franklin has drug problems, Brentwood has money problems (too much of it), and Centennial has gang problems (that have been well documented in the past and in non-debatable) sure makes Fairview sound much more appealing. We are open zoned out here by the way.

    Two notes:

    1) "Gang" issue are well documented in every WilCo high school, just ask the SRO's. Most are just more covert rather than overt;

    2) See your own parenthial note as in, "...in the past..."

    So much unnecessary hate....

  18. Joe, I've definitely heard way, way worse. I truly wasn't taking a shot at him, just offering an honest critique.

I'm not an LC guy; in fact, I live in Brentwood and was an impartial observer. However, my understanding is that the higher seed plays at home, so LC is probably relieved that they're visiting Powell, not Ooltewah.

Those allegations of theft are nasty. Powell and AC have a history of enmity, but there's no excuse for those alleged actions.

Congrats to Centennial on a strong season.

Thanks for setting me straight! :D It's all good.

If you're living in Brentwood, you must be pretty proud of the Bruins, too. Hoping Brentwood and Fairview get to take a road trip to Cookeville.

Powellbaldeagle: Glad to hear things are getting cleared up quick. Typically it's not kids from the school who do those things, just somebody taking advantage of a situation. Hope it's a safe game this week.

  19. It wasn't a cheap shot, it was an honest opinion from someone in the broadcasting business. He had a good voice, but he overdid the first down calls. Of course it didn't affect the game. It did affect my eardrums.

I agree with your other thoughts.

Guess we'll have to agree on one point and respectfully disagree on the other. And the disagreement will come from another with 30+ years in the broadcasting business.

I don't get to the East State much, but I will tell you that if the work at Centennial bothered you, you wouldn't want to play every week in Middle Tennessee. There are a few places that use their PA announcer as a true weapon. Some are purely obnoxious, some don't know any better, but all are "homers." Just defending our guy.

One other question...with the win the bracket shows LC going to Powell. Since Powell has been at home two stright weeks and you guys definitely have the frequent flier miles, will you still be on the road? Years ago there was a clause that said in that situation, the two-weeks-on-the-road team got to stay at home. Is that no longer the case?

And based on media reports, if you do have to go to Powell, you might want the parents to hold a lock box for your players' valuables, lest they suffer the suffer the same fate as Anderson County.

    Good luck to ya'.
