gasp, we agreed on something?  I'd have not used "laughable" if for no other reason than respect. 23-0 in 3 seasons is immortality in my book.

but otherwise i agree with your post.

The middle school record means very little to me. They have been able to beat teams with much better athletes simply because those kids had been running the Wing-T since youth football and that's a difficult offense for some high school coaches to prepare for, much more so for middle school coaches that rarely do film prep or even opponent prep at that level. The success had way more to do with the system than it did the coaching in all due respect. Also, his reaction to not getting the job is proof enough that he's not ready to take that step. I'll refrain from elaborating out of respect for Coach Johnson.

    I'll address this.

    1. Johnson. He's royalty and you will NEVER see me type a bad word about him. Ever. What he did the last 3 years, and then some, he gets a lifetime pass to everything. Games, perks, they cannot do enough good things for him. No sarcasm I am 1000% serious. I am sure the kids adore him and they should. We all should.

    2. Middle school and high school are different. The schemes are different. The competition is different. I didn't see any middle school except the championship games that were broadcast. I'm not as detailed an X and O guy, but it looked like a similar offense to wing t. Johnson just knew how to connect with the kids and teach them. And he was INCREDIBLE at that. But middle school success doesn't mean automatic high school success. The powers that be obviously felt a more sophisticated system was due here, and while I am the last to defend the administration, I at least see what they were thinking. I think :)

    3. His past dalliances. If that's the right word. Maybe just one, I am not taking a shot at religious types. I promise. You have every right to feel that the previous mistake disqualifies him. I won't disrespect you or that opinion. I feel differently. I think people can change and learn and grow. I also think it shows the kids that you can be forgiven and bounce back. None of us is perfect. Some, not saying you, but some fundamentalist types love to feign outrage while they continue to mask and hide their own skeletons. Committee obviously felt the same way. I see their point if they did.

    4. Sometimes it's time for change. I salute the guys who gave decades. Truly! But longevity alone, is not a reason to give someone a birthright. This program had fallen so far from its potential. I don't think this team should go to semis every year. But every 4-5 years I think they can be in the quarters or semis. I think they should play for a gold ball a couple times a decade. I'd like to win one every so often. It's possible that hanging on to the same bloodline and the like for 30 years is part of the problem. I DON'T mean that disrespectfully.

Finally, I'll end with this. It's done. I was the loudest drum banger for a change. I saw problems in 2018. We have the change. I raised a couple questions in the first few hours. But I quickly accepted it. All Rockets should. Agonizing over this or that will just rob you of joy.  Justin Palmer is the Rocket head football coach. He deserves a minimum of 4 seasons. We gave Coach Eli 6. Who knows if Palmer even stays that long.

I will probably not change much. I'll question decision-making like I do for all teams I like. But I won't call for the guy's head. These kids deserve some stability, and it's GREAT for them if the head guy does a GREAT job.

    Respectfully,

    The General

Good post General. I like Johnson, but the idea that he should've been the next HC is laughable. Everyone in coaching circles knows that this is a good hire, and trying to bring his personal life into it is despicable. If CH folks want to get personal, they should look in the mirror. Lord knows one of their native sons (who moved on) is far from a beacon of morality, nor is many currently tied to the program. Best of luck to Coach Palmer and great job administration for bringing in a proven guy to lead the program.

Thank God you're not. So who is on your wishlist old wise one? Will you be interviewing this week for the job? I assume you'd be a lock!!!!

    BS

I'm sure he'll be looking forward to all of your wisdom and insight. You should set a meeting up with him, let him know exactly what he needs to do to win there. It's a shame you've been hiding all of your expertise for all of these years. It's time to step up, be a difference maker, let this new coach know how it's done.

Collinwood is very hard hitting!! We played them the first game of the season. Their linebackers will hammer you!!

Collinwood has traditionally always been the opposite of finesse. Maybe not that athletic at times, but almost always hard hitting. I guess the General is hitting the bottle again.

What you are saying sounds like sour grapes.  For anyone that has not coached teams that won multiple state championships it's easy to throw stones.  Believe me when I say that winning state championships is extremely difficult, and you must work that hard not only every year but every day.  What would the folks at WC say if the kids were required to participate in a strength & conditioning program during the season on Saturday mornings at 8:30am, Monday mornings at 6:00am and Thursday afternoons?  What about having mandatory film sessions on Sunday afternoon?  Would they be willing to workout every day except Christmas and Thanksgiving with the exception of the dead period.  It's ok if both the kids and parents don't wish to make that much of a commitment to high school football but that is exactly what some of the elite programs are doing.

Dozens of schools (including all of the ones I've coached at) do just that, and have zero championships. You can work harder than anyone in the state, but if you don't have the dudes, you're not winning jack crap. That's simply the reality of football, and any sport really.

Let's be careful how you throw around the term "GREAT" as the great ones win state championships.  I like to refer to the guys that go deep into the playoffs as good coaches.  Another thing that I caution people with is that in today's environment you really don't have to have a good team to make the playoffs due to the fact they take so many teams and Tennessee has nine (9) divisions in a state that has a population base of 7 million.  Now if you want to put everyone back together into five divisions and take the district champions and runner-up to the playoffs that is a different story.

LOL I think you're mixing up some of the "great" coaches with great recruiters. You put some of the "great" coaches you speak of at Collinwood, Wayne Co., Richland, Summertown, etc. and they would have exactly ZERO state championships. I personally have worked with some state championship coaches that were good, not great, they simply had better players.

Yes, the Jimmy’s and Joe’s make it easier but I have been a part of several teams that won state championships with much less talent than some of the other teams.  If you fail to work hard and make the necessary sacrifices to be a champion and the opportunity presents itself you will not be prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

It took Rick Rice 20 plus years to win one state championship, which wouldn't have been done without his son and an abnormally large senior class. He's a fantastic coach, but let's not get carried away. He had the Jimmy's and Joe's to get it done that season. He arguably had better talent a few years later and didn't get it done. Winning championships is hard with great talent, and virtually impossible at a place like Wayne Co. with average talent most of the time. There are MANY great coaches out there that have never won a championship and most likely never will.

Hard to believe a a top 1A football power gets drug down due to a years old middle school grudge from another school. Does the superintendent micromanage the hiring and firing of coaches in the county?  Made no sense to bring a new unproven guy with a new system in so late when competent assistants were on hand. Wasn't fair to the new guy or the ones in place.

Short answer, yes. Sorrells has a hand in every hire. Also, as long as the ship is sailing right at MCHS, he couldn't care less whether Forrest or Cornersville is doing well or not.

Coach hired May 16 and gone on October 25.  Not much of a chance.  Short leash in Dawgsville. With such a late start on the hiring process no one had a prayer for success with that team unless they were already on staff. Why did the two coaches on staff with public approval not get a shot?

Everyone involved in the first hire should sit this one out.

The superintendent has never liked the current staff member that applied. Not sure why. He had him fired when he was at LMS because some mommies and daddies got mad about playing time.

  11. Not wrong at all. It's been this way for years. Most coaches will tell you as well that some of the the best ones in the state are usually on the 1A level. It's much easier to be successful when you have tons of athletes running around like many schools on the 5 and 6A levels.

Dawgs won, 20-14! Hard fought game. I know it’s said all the time, but this was the worst officiated game I have ever seen. This group of refs should never be allowed to ref again. I have heard the ref pool is thin, but this is unacceptable for any players on either team to have to deal with. Hope TSSAA gets this figured out! Congrats boys!

I agree, there were some horrendous calls against the Trojans. In fact, that was the determining factor in them not taking the lead late. Inexcusable!

You're on a roll with dumb posts but this is your worst yet.  Did you listen to any sports talk radio after the Titans game?  It's not good in their offices this week. Losing games you're supposed to win draws scrutiny.  That comes with the job. Your own fans venting is one thing, when the other team does it for you it's another. If a coach downplays the importance of coaching he's not a good one.  The fans of the Forrest program think their players should be competitive with most of the teams on their schedule. That's not too much to ask for based on the school's recent success, returning players, facilities, community support and growth, etc. If you think the results of football games played 20, 30, and 40 years ago matter today, you are a special kind of stupid. Comparing your team to small, rural schools with half your enrollment defines mediocre.

Good lord, did you just compare high school football to the NFL???? :D

  14. 21 hours ago, PercyPeabody said:

Who else would they blame? If these 1A schools are better as you say, the only way to change the outcomes are to coach better. Look at your personnel and scheme it up. Lesser teams have bettered plenty of favored teams by simply being better prepared, better coached, and scheming what compliments their strengths and talent. It's high school ball. You can't solve this by signing free agents or going to the transfer portal. If there's enough NIL money, maybe. LOL I'm teasing.

Better coaching and execution is all you can control right now and it's all the fans can ask for at this point. Frankly the parents, fans, and players deserve it.

Why is anyone or anything to blame? I realize that most of the parents at Forrest think their kids are superior athletically to everyone else, but history has proven that to not be true. Forrest was never a power on the 1A level, so what makes them think they will be on the 2A level? Heck, most of those 1A schools that General says sucks (Moore Co., Collinwood, Wayne Co.), have dominated Forrest throughout the years. I guess they've never had any good coaches, that must be the reason.

Let's review Friday's game.  Forrest continued to rotate a who's who of players at receiver everyone on both sidelines knows won't be getting a pass thrown to them. ( @MC2023 it is what it is. )

Forrest continues to kick low line drive kickoffs with backup defensive players covering to the best athletes on the field and watch them return it 40, 50, 99, and now 96 yards. Friday's faux pas turned a 27-14 game that the players fought back to make competitive into a 33-14 blowout a few seconds into the 3rd quarter. That one play ended the game. Inexcusable. Another first half turnover which was part of the MC 27 point run happened because our QB was hit as he threw the ball by an unblocked defensive lineman.

Naw, in hindsight it sounds like good advice if you're trying to not get blown off the field by a 1A team on homecoming.

At this point, I'd say it's safe to say that those 1A schools, and that region are simply better than y'all, But feel free to keep blaming the coaches and whatever else excuse you can come up with.

We're all over the board here. The coaching staff doesn't know you or CoachT exists. I have no affiliation with the coaching staff. The coaching staff laughs at your posts. The coaching staff doesn't give a crap about your posts. For the good of Forrest football you need to have a meeting with the staff.

No meeting or expert is needed. Start with the basics, Coach. Get 11 players on the field every play and snap the ball before the play clock expires. Put the best athletes on the field like the other teams. Yes, even at wide receiver and on special teams. If your JV is on kickoff team and the kicker isn't putting it in the endzone, pooch or squib it- don't kick to their star player.  If one running back is averaging 10 yards per carry in a close game give him the ball instead of the one averaging 2.5. If your freshman QB is getting blasted on every pass change the protection. Watch Wayne County games.

Good god, spoken like someone that doesn't know the first thing about coaching. Stay mad loser.

Your weirdest post yet. It starts with you backflipping to attempt to prove that you aren't on the staff or affiliated with them.

It ends with you telling us we don't care enough because we won't meet with the staff that you aren't affiliated with.

I can't tell if I'm being disparaged or flirted with.

I've never said I didn't know any of them. That doesn't mean I'm affiliated with the team or school. Big difference.

Really hard for someone to make the 2nd and 3rd statement if the 1st statement is true, Interestingly, we have Watertown and Trousdale coaching staffs raked through the mud all week but the zero affiliation Forrest guy only sees fit to post in defense of one 2A staff over and over.  Interesting.  I never said which coach you were. You keep bringing up the head guy.

Question, so you think Stephenson and the rest of the staff only know or have ties to people in Chapel Hill and/or at Forrest? Newsflash, a person can be knowledgeable about a staff and program without being affiliated or employed by them. Again, if you and General truly cared about Forrest's football program, you'd set up a meeting with the coaching staff and grace them with your superior knowledge so that they can be the best possible. I'm sure they would be honored to learn from experts such as yourselves.

Somebody should have been working on pass defense and checking radiator hoses last week instead of spending so much time on the T. Loretto wasn't getting your full attention last week and it showed. It's time to refocus and save this season.

The fact that y'all honestly think Coach Stephenson looks at Coach T and cares what is posted on here proves to me just how clueless you are. It's hilarious that your egos think that your opinions are even remotely important. Hmmm.......so Loretto gets beaten soundly by a Wayne County team that isn't very good and that Fayetteville City could have hung 100 on? Interesting..........

Nice job trading scores after you spotted them 3 TDs. Maybe get safer buses for your students also. Other than that, wonderful work as always.

LOL, wasn't at the game. The only thing I know about it is the score. No clue what you're referring to with the buses.
