  1. I can assure you that I'm not proud of what happened with the coaching situation. I'd have much preferred that things had gone along smoothly and these things had never happened. If you'll go back in this thread and look at post #11, you'll find that I gave credit to the past coach. If you'll check my posts from past years, you'll find that I was among the first to defend him when he was unjustly criticized. When a child is out of control, it needs to be set down for a while to think about it's actions. Whether certain individuals want to admit it or not, that is the situation LA was in prior to the suspension and ultimate resignation of the past coach. He was given a chance to be set down and think about his actions. HE CHOSE TO RESIGN. Some individuals want to underhandedly blame the current coach for what has happened. As long as he continues to coach to the best of his ability, I will continue to defend him of unjust criticizm as I did the past coach. If it sounds as if I'm criticizing the past coach while defending the present, sorry about that, my only problem with him was the last 2 or 3 weeks he spent as coach. I may be the only one in the county who feels this way, but I believe if you took a poll of the unbiased fans, you'd find the same thinking.

He "CHOSE" to resign? Really? How much humiliation and abuse should someone take before saying I've had enough? Anyone with any self respect would've done the same thing. To have taken a suspension would have proven to those kids that they along with their parents, families, and every other idiot that thinks they no the only "right" way to coach had control rather than the coach. Why would they respect him if they thought having Daddy make some phone calls would get them what they want. Like Melton or not you can't argue his record. Study other coaches past and present and you'll have a hard time finding one that you'll always agree with, that doesn't have to discipline a group, or that doesn't do any of the things that the former coach was critized for.

And by the way, why is the majority of the talk still about LA? I can answer that. LA went from being one of the most classy groups of boys in the district to a bunch of unruly kids. I'm certainly not blaming any coaches for that one. When I played ball my father would have put a stop to that kind of behavior.

I'm certainly not qualified to determine who is to "blame" and I don't think it matters. For the sake of what's best for these kids a lot of people need to step up and truly do what's best for them. Whatever that may be.

Good luck to all these district teams!

  2. I think he is a good guy and seems to do a good job. I hope he gets to stay however I'm not sure why anyone would want to coach. Good coaches aren't apprieciated. Dekalb Co. has come a long way and will most likely continue to grow stronger. Good luck Coach Martin.

  3. This is sad when you think about it. No offense to the rest of the district teams, but this district is now back to not even being considered a threat come regional tournament time. Teams/coaches in the other district all knew that the road to the state tournament went through Livingston Academy. Looks like that is no longer an issue without Coach Melton in the picture.

True. I hate it for the kids and for the true supporters of LA. Even though you might not agree with his ways, you can't argue with his record.

I agree. I think the shake up in Overton Co. trumps the records from previous seasons. Gotta give good coaching some credit. Talent is great but you have to be able to use it. Coach McWillams does a good job putting it together.
