  1. I remember a few years ago when Maryville dominated 4A and Rutherford Co teams did the same in the 5A Division and I would say " Maryville needs to step to the big leagues and face this tough Middle TN county and see how they fair..." Well I got my wish and my answer, Maryville stepped up and showed up, and has been beating Rutherford Co teams year in and year out in the semi's on their way to a Championship every year since. They are the team to beat, thats for sure and I believe that the State Championship is unfortunately played in the semis every year in the upper bracket when Maryville and the other team from Middle TN meet. One year that other team will show up and put up a win against the talented Maryville, even if only by 1 point. Hopefully this year might be the one. Good luck on a great and excited match up of two teams that have yet to meet before. Injury free as well.

  2. I noticed that the medals at the individual state championships were extremely small. In fact they look the same and about as inexpensive as the medals given out at the youth level. What is costs of the "medals" that a state champion puts around his neck after an amazing feat? $2? And also how much money is paid out to the 30 or so refs on 10 mats over 3 days? Bout $15000 maybe? So u pay about $500 or so for all of our state champion medals. And u give the refs 10's of thousands of dollars? Don't u think more money should be invested in why we are there in the first place? We are talking about a state medal.....

  3. Unnecessary roughness is the appropriate call for an illegal slam.... This tourney was voluntary so no money for the refs.... You could bring the wrestler back to the mat like a baby.... But if his head hits the mat excessively, it's illegal, and the offensive wrestler didn't do his job..... Offensive wrestlers Coach yanked him up immediately after the slam and scolded him intensely..... Yeah it was unnecessary roughness.

  4. His knee hit first. He didn't bring him down with excessive force. It was a basic mat return executed just as he was coached. I've seen literally thousands of the exact same move from middle school, high school and college. Out of the thousands (not exaggerating) that may be the second one I've seen called a slam.

Just because you wear stripes doesn't mean you know what you're doing. Perhaps you played soccer and now referee wrestling?

Come on out, the stripes are waiting for you..... make a difference..... be a game changer....or better yet, just stay on the sidelines, and criticize from a distance, as usual, like a regular Average Joe.....
  5. "There are much more effective ways of bringing a wrestler back to the mat other than lifting your opponent in the air."

No there aren't. Unless you want to to significantly increase your chances of getting reversed.

Lifting the man in the air is part of the sport. It's one reason a mat is used. The minute you step on a mat you risk the subjective call of the referee. Do you teach your kids to make sure his opponents feet stay on the mat? Interesting strategy.

I just noticed that the kid was holding his knee (or his calf hard to tell) during the injury timeout. Not his shoulder or head.

Hey NEWBEE, Have you ever reffed before? Probably not.... did you see the kids head bounce off the mat? Im sure you did......The ref made a good call, It was illegal all day and everyday. Maybe the kid should have finished the match, but thats not our call, its the defensive wrestlers... as the rule book states. Let me ask you a question.... If every kid at that tournament gets slammed like that every match, every period, all day long, then thats thousands of times a day right, on that particular slam?.................. if thats legal every time, right, as you see it? Cause if you say yes, then over the course of the day, theres gonna be lots of concussions, and lots of kids getting carried out of there on stretchers......Try good judgement NEWBEE,... thats what good refs have to do :)

  6. TNKO… My apologies for just now getting back to your question. Ok so from one bald headed doctor to one bald headed ref.

NO I was never contacted by the school period. Now please understand I will be in surgery a portion of the next few days in case I don’t get back to any of your replies.

You know ,I hate how people just throw accusations on here, and rant and rave about their opinions and what they think they know. Sometimes a simple question just requires a simple answer. And you just gave it, so I hope people can move on on this subject. popcorneater.gif

Around around the mulberry bush the monkey chases the BIG RED MACHINE… lol sorry I could not help myself. Sooo TSSAA or blueballs or heck anybody…. The Baylor oppurtunity comes with great sacrifice and commitment which equally success(now I have only one college course so I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed) however it seems kinda simple. Okay… okay… let me say this again please get you a pencil and piece of paper so can write it down and keep it in your pocket.. The Baylor opportunity comes with great sacrifice and commitment which equally success.

    Yours in sport

Mitchell L. Brunner(my son makes me put the L in there says it looks more "professional")

So to be honest, Baylor never contacted you before or right after yours sons freshman state championship? You went and contacted them?popcorneater.gif
  8. BCB did what most of you guys should do, and that is retire from this board when your kids graduate and are grown! lol. But seriously, All teams in TN can compete in individual duals and such against all these Nationally ranked prep schools right?

  9. Im a little confused, Didnt one or a few of our teams travel to Florida to compete in a national level duals against Brandon and other top teams a couple of years ago? Even Christian Brothers goes to Hawaii every now and then. In fact, they are always traveling out of state. So help me understand... is it because these out of state tournys are not considered National Invitationals so they can participate in them?

  10. There is a HUGE misconception that these wrestlers are being recruited and given "full rides". I know it doesnt matter what myself or anyone else says we cant change public perception. I will state the facts and you can believe them or not. Baylor does not recruit anyone. Period. All of the wrestlers that came from other programs left their previous programs and then contacted Baylor. Of all the kids listed in previous posts half of them are paying full tuition. The ones that arent paying full tuition are paying a substantial amount that their parents have to sacrifice in order to give their kids this opportunity. There isnt one single kid on a "free ride" or even close to it. Baylor isnt a win at all cost type of program no matter what you may think. There are many kids who will win the public school state this year and in up coming years that applied to Baylor and were not accepted or couldnt afford it even with financial aide. I will not name any kids but there are several current wrestlers from Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville that applied after being enrolled in other high schools that were not accpeted or their parents couldnt swing the costs. Look at the drop off from the feeder youth team and the middle school team and that should prove that Baylor isnt just taking kids who can wrestle. I get asked all the time by other coaches where my red raider club kids go and why they arent on the middle school team. The answer is they apply but dont get accepted or cant afford it. The coaches always look at me funny and ask why Baylor doesnt give them scholarships and I have to explain that due to popular belief it doesnt really work that way. These kids work their butts off not only in the wrestling room but in the class room and its belittling their efforts to just assume they win because they are at Baylor. They deal with a grueling wrestling schedule, 3 hours a day of homework and studying outside the classroom and a pretty intense practice schedule in additon to required public service and many other requirments. Their parents sacrifice a lot for their kids to go there and NOTHING is given to them. The only un-fair advantage Baylor has is their facilies, campus, educational opprotunities and dedication and quality of coaches. McCallie, Soddy, Cleveland, Father Ryan, Cbhs, all have advantages that attract wrestlers. Should Cleveland get rid of its awesome coaching staff and feeder program because its an advantage over other schools who arent as succesful? Should Soddy tell their passionate fans to not come to matches because its an advantage? Should McCallie tell Gordon Connell to forget half of his wrestling knowledge because he knows more than other coaches? Should Father Ryan discontinue their Nashville Catholic feeder program because its too good? All top notch programs have something that is advantageos and thats why kids want to go there. Good programs and schools dont have to recruit and its always been that way. Houston, Tate, Murphy and Brunner all came to Baylor because it was what they felt was best for them. Baylor didnt recruit them in any shape form or fashion. Money wasnt a deciding factor as most of these kids are paying full tuition or very subnstantial amounts. Those are the facts.

    I DONT BELIEVE YOU...SORRY
  11. Actually there nardDog you are INCORRECT. You can swap schools as long as you move into the new schools zone. There is a provision that states it cant be for athletic purposes though so Soddy could fight if they wanted to I guess. That being said, they have benefited from as many transfers as anybody around. If my memory serves me correctly Blake Henry, Josh Deckelman, Brett Ervin were all on the team last year and none of them set out a year after transferring did they?

    oh! in your face!!!!!!!
  12. It has been widley reported on national wrestling message boards that Blair is looking for someone to fill the 132/lb position. With Blair wrestling a national schedule this could be a much better fit for someone of TR's ability plus it would give him a clean slate outside of Tennessee.

Like most schools. Coaches have to "fill" a position in their own schools they "normally" teach at. No wonder they had a split years ago.

On another note you guys on here maybe need to spend more time with your wifes and not focus on these kids so much. Find a hobby with your loved ones lol rolleyes.gif just saying

  13. Guys, I have been seeing a bunch of these Pizza Hut Ads here on this site, but I keep calling them and they are telling me that there is no $10 special. Whats going on!????? Is it an April Fools thing?

  14. I was just jerking your chain a bit. Congrats for a strong showing once again!

However, while your population theory has some merit and looks good on paper (especially with other sports like football and basketball)...with wrestling, I don't believe it holds as much water. Tradition and opportunity mean so much more!

For example, since you brought of Chatt...I could take the best you have to offer from your 300,000 people and travel to any number of small towns of 20,000 in IA, PA, OH, MI, MN and they would have no problem keeping up with you. Now based on your contention, how could that be??? Because they are from parts of the country that are steeped in wrestling tradition with lots of tournaments, coaches, clubs, strong competition, etc.

On the flip side, I'll take that same Chatt team against the best the entire state of Mississippi has to offer out of 3 MILLION people, with zero wrestling tradition. Guess who wins easily??? It ain't rocket surgery.

Bottom line...if you come from an area that lacks wrestling tradition and opportunity, I don't care how many people you have.

With that said, on average, Region 3 had a state champion for every 16.5 wrestlers. New Region 5 had one every 16.78. Looks like our best are competing very well with your best. And, if your population theory is as valid as you contend, you really better look out.

The new Region 5 is made up of Memphis, Clarksville, Dickson and the Williamson Co. teams which are the strong Brentwood and Franklin area squads. As well as Cheateam Co. So its a broad spectrum of teams that stretch from the top of the state to the bottom. All with big populations and good wrestlers coming from them.

  15. lol, boo hoo. How many out of state guys were there in the whole tournament? maybe 12? Also, you want to combine Memphis and nashville the two largest cities in the state by a huge amount to compare to Chattanoogas 300,000? Ba ha ha. How about this. Go out and create some interest in your sport, create more teams, get more wrestlers out. If chattanooga can do it then surely you can since your population is 10X Chattanoogas. That would be like a high schooler coming home saying he got beat up by a 6th grader. Im am going to nominate Mr Moon as the cry baby of the year award winner. Look back through his posts. You might be the most negative person in the world. Did region 5 win handily last year? Nope I think not.

Not sure if Mr. Moon is crying or not, but I do know that His Clarksville Team had to travel over 4 and a half hours to compete in their Region tourny. So that sucks! lol

I also think that the middle TN participation at the regionals in Memphis this year was only about 100 out of the 235 competitors there so I dont think that alot of the old region 4 clubs kids traveled to their new region tourny this time around.

It does stink that Memphis does have to travel so much but I think that most of the kids down there really do not do much AAU wrestling in middle tn throughout the season anyway but most all did show up for the regionals down there this year.

The Memphis area kids are some great wrestlers with excellent coaches! I can say that for sure.

  16. Thanks for the feedback. We had actually planned on showcasing hte finals but do to time constraints we were forced to scrap that idea. The tournament simply grew to large for us to make last minute adjustments. Thats a risk you take with open tournaments with the deadline to sign up just a day away from the start of the tournament. I personally like the open tournament. My opionion is the bigger the better but we will have to weigh some serious options for next year.1) We will have to go back to a two day tournament. 2) Make the younger wrestlers qualify for the tournament or 3) find a larger venue which they arent many of that are centrally located for the state. Please share your thoughts with your region directors so they can provide feedback at our annual meeting.

Since you already have the mats down, and you dont want to run into the baseball season, why not do Tot, Bantam, and Midget on Saturday and Junior and Middle School on Sunday, maybe with the K-5 Elementary Duals as well.

  17. Who is coaching the old sharpshooter team. I see some kids still wearing there signlets. That was a good team it's a shame where did thet go or better yet why did they stop wrestling.

John Heath is coaching the Murfreesboro Elite squad in the same Sharpshooters building. The coaching hasnt changed at all as Coach Heath has always been Bill Kennedys #2 at the helm of the dominate Sharpshooters back in day. He coached the K-4 kids and prepared them for Bill for many years. Great Coach and friend. :D

  18. Where can I find out information about this tournament. Would like to come since Tullahoma cancelled the middle school wrestling. Can't find any flyers or information on this tournament.

you can contact Coach Wes Smith at 615-715-9170... sign-ups are now avalible on track wrestling web site as well. There is no flyer on tnyouthwrestling web site as of now but should be soon. It is middle school open folder round robin format with more mat time for the wrestlers.
