  1. Personally, I think South Greene will be a tough out for anybody in this region.  Athletically they are very good.  If they can figure out how to block people they will be a tough opponent.  Believe me, they've got a couple of kids that can run.  As for this week, if Cosby can stop the run they have a chance.

  2. The Bears also have a running game this year that they've not had in quite some time.  I like the Bears by a comfortable margin, but hey, it's a "homer" pick, I always like the Bears!  I see them only losing to Maryville this year, and then to Maryville again in the 3rd round.  They are very talented, but I don't think they can compete with Maryville's size. I was shocked when I watched the highlights of the Alcoa game.  Thems some big Rebels!  But, like Preacher Walker used to say if you keep the faith, fight the good fight, and finish the race, who knows, we may sneak up on em!

  3. Nice win last week against Mo. West.  No doubt the Devils are BIG favorites this week.  But, we must always remember App State v. Michigan, Wyoming v. Tennessee.  Upsets are a part of every sport, especially football.  Before I get branded an idiot and hateful bigot towards the Devils I am simply stating that while you are a prohibited favorite, don't sleep on the little dog, he may have more fight in him than you think.  I'll be at the SCHS/Mo East game, but good luck to both teams.  Hope both get out with no serious injuries.  Also, any update on your big RB?  I noticed he went out in the 3rd the other night and never came back.  He's an impressive young back.

  4. There is a whole lot of football to be played before Devils vs Falcons is even possible. This weeks focus is the Trojans and that is all that matters. Who cares how big, fast and dominate the falcons are in week 1? We will worry about that in week 12.

That's a good way to look at things.  I know you have a talented team, I'm not taking anything away from your team.  I just think some of you get a little ahead of yourselves talking about the gold that's in your future.  Maybe it is, if so, like I said, I really have nothing invested in either team.  Just stating for some of your more "hardy" fans that the Falcons eventually await, and I don't think there is anything you can do about it.  Good luck tomorrow night with the Trojans.

  5. Actually, a good parent wouldn't send their child out there to get beat on for potentially 14 more games. How badly does the bone have to be ripped away from the body before its ok not to play? For what? A state championship, rushing record, Mr. Football.... He has nothing left to prove on the high school level and will play on Saturdays this time next year.

Mr. Hurd made this decision because its what's best for his health and future.

Easy boss!  I wasn't throwing around accusations, simply saying this is a time he'll never get back.  I understand he's done all he can do at this level, but it's still his sr. year.  I hope he comes to UT and is an All-American!  I also know how special a sr. year is.  All I was saying, wish Mr. Hurd and his family NOTHING but the best!!!

  6. Just a fan of high school football.  Truth be told, I'm a Sevier County alum.  I have seen Greeneville teams from the 1990's up til now.  I've seen Fulton teams throughout the same time period.  I never said anything about your team being bad, I said Fulton is better.  They have a two headed tailback monster that is nasty and their o-line is huge.  They have tall athletic wide-outs that can go get it, and their qb is serviceable for what their coaching staff needs him to do.  Greeneville is much smaller up front, offensively, and while they have some nice athletes outside, and at qb they don't have the o-line to match Fulton's size up front.  I watched them dismantle Powell, and I know Powell lost a lot, but they also run a scheme that is almost identical to Greeneville's.  I know that saying anything negative about the Devils is fightin words for you people, and you think football was invented at Burley Stadium.  Oh, wait, I didn't say anything negative, I just told the truth about Fulton handing out another beatin in November.  Either way, I have nothing invested in either team, I'm just trying to ease the pain that will be another playoff exit at the hands of the Falcons.

  7. I probably know a little more football than you think.  Fulton has the speed advantage, the size advantage, and the psychological advantage from the beating they laid on the Devils last year.  Like I said, the only team that can beat Fulton this year is Fulton.  They are athletically superior than anybody they'll play.  Greeneville certainly has good athletes, they just don't have enough!  Oh, and Coach Black and his assistants are pretty good too.

  8. I'm not a Fulton fan, but I know this:  It doesn't matter how you scheme if the team your playing is superior.  A very smart coach once said, "It's not the x's and o's, it's the Jimmy's and Joe's."  Unfortunately for Greeneville, Fulton's Jimmy's and Joe's are better than theirs.  They proved it last year and I'm certain they will again.  Fulton does not run a complicated scheme because they don't have to.  They can line up and beat people man to man, and if that's the case it doesn't matter how much film you watch.  But, hey, what do I know?  I'm a golf coach.

  9. Hate the kid misses his sr. year.  I saw the play he got hurt on, then he came back out and finished the game.  Tough kid!  I can't speak as to what I'd say to my son, I just hope this was his decision and not aided by over-bearing parents protecting an investment.  I couldn't imagine giving up my sr. season, it ultimately was my last.  I did go on to play collegiate sports, just not the sport I love the most.  He certainly has an extremely bright future, and being a VFL, I'm glad the next step of his journey will taken in Big ORANGE!!!!!

  10. I have two words for Greeneville fans:  FULTON FALCONS!  They basically returned their whole team that hammered everybody last year, (including Greeneville) and they started this year off by trouncing a much larger school that went to the semis last year.  The only team that keeps Fulton from repeating is Fulton, bottom line.  They may not be able to name the score against the Devils, but they WILL win by double digits.

  11. That is awesome bmom but not surprising. I had the opportunity to meet coach Brewer 15-20 years ago when the Bears were traveling to a midstate school to play on a Friday night. My family owned a local restaurant and fed the team that afternoon. The young men were the very quiet and respectful and real YES SIR NO SIR type of kids, the kind you wouldn't mind your daughter dating. Coach Brewer had the attention and respect of every young man on that team

and treated all of them equally, from the 1st team QB to the 4th team tackle. All in all he earned the respect of my whole staff that afternoon and because of that I've pulled for SC every time they have lined up( except against my rebels). Coach Brewer is a fine man and SC is blessed to have him as an example to your children.

I believe it was 1994 as we were traveling to Brentwood Academy. That was my jr year, and as far as I know, besides the 1999 Clinic Bowl that the only time we've traveled to mid-state. You are correct that Coach Brewer's players have nothing but respect for him. I graduated in 1996 and I still call him "Coach." He's one of the finest men I've ever been around, and consider myself lucky to have played for him. As for Friday night, the Bears may not have enough to knock the Rebels off, but I do think they can be competitive. This will be the first time since 1992, my freshman year, that I have been to Maryville and rooted against the Rebels. Have nothing but respect for Coach Quarles and his program, but I'm hopeful my Bears can pull the shocker! :thumb:

  12. Im not falling for this mess. My Murphy Fair book says he is the head coach. Murphy would not have put that in his book if he wasnt the head coach. You think im joking but im not.

You're right Roy, when Murphy Fair released his magazine Coach Shelton was the Head Coach. But, he stepped down early in the season. So while your Murphy Fair was correct at the beginning of the year things have changed. Nobody thinks you're joking, Roy, most of us just think you're, well we're not real sure what to think. If Cosby can stop the Indians running game and get a little something goin on offense they are capable of pulling the upset! :thumb:

  13. You can't judge a team by one game, a game they defended the triple option would be even less of a legit measuring stick. As for trouble defending the Sevier passing attack over the years, it may seem true but you're slightly off base. In 09 Sevier scored 31 on West but only 17 of those points were SC's offense scoring on the West defense, the other 14 came on a pick 6 and a blocked punt, and last year SC scored 28 in this matchup, but only 21 was the SC offense on the West Defense, 7 came on a pick 6. So the SC offense is averaging 19 points a game against the West defense, and the West Defense is much better and much healthier than they have been the past 2 years.

I haven't seen MO West this year, but I can tell you that the SCHS offense is different this year than it has been in the past. Its very up tempo, Oregonesque. They try to run plays every 10-15 seconds or so, and the coaches do a great job at spotting and creating mismatches in the passing game. I'm not saying the Bears will win, but, I think the Bears will win. :thumb:

  14. Don't know how many tackles or yards he has, but 48, Nick Koenig from Cosby is impressive! Kid weighs about 185 and will stick it in there against anybody at LB, and runs pretty good too! He's got some dadgum heart, doesn't leave the field, EVER! I've heard about the kid from H-Town and I heard he WAS the real deal, better than Townsend is what I heard. I love watchin good HS football players, nothin like Friday nights! :thumb:

  15. I think they can keep the game low scoring by holding on to the ball for 6-7 minutes at a time and limiting SC's possessions, and don't write off the West defense, this is the same defense that held the high scoring Greeneville offense to 10 points. The one touchdown happened on a blown assignment and gave Shuffler the outside corner which is gonna be a touchdown 9 times out of 10.

D-B tried to grind it out too, and it turned into a track meet! IF this one does the same the Bears will run off and hide late!

  16. I'm new to Greene County and I can't understand where all the animosity comes from. I must admit that its a little strange that a county that is not very densly populated has two seperate school systems, and I get the whole GHS takes all the good players garb, but if the T$$AA wouldn't have made the biggest mistake in history with the Z plan would GHS even play county schools? I understand that GHS has a HUGE advantage when it comes to funds and resources, and should pummel all the county schools. I don't understand what makes you guys want to come on coacht and flex your muscles behind a computer screen and brag about beating teams you SHOULD beat. Wait a minute, i just found out where all the animosity comes from, it comes from GHS people thinking they are special because they live in the thriving metropolis of Greeneville. It comes from people in the city limits thinking everybody else in the county is just a bunch of dumb hicks that no nothing about anything. Let me ask you GHS fans, how many titles did you rack up before the Z Plan let you all play down in a soft classification becuase your school whinned about how it was unfair that you had to play schools bigger than you? I can't remember many. Any way hope you guys feel good about beating up on the much smaller county schools, keep showin that Devil pride! :thumb:

  17. Good luck to my Landers. You step off the bus down a touchdown anytime you play @ Cosby.

D' will be up to the task.Should be a hard fought game from both teams. Hope the genius on the O' side can get it going this week but not holding my breath. Here's an idea called K.I.S.S, You figure it out... <_<

I was at Cosby for 5 years and never to remember having a huge referee advantage. The calls might be equally crappy for both teams, but never seen a game heavily called for us while I was there. You may have football and basketball confused. :thumb: I still like the Eagles in a CLOSE one!
