  1. Almost all would be students are granted eligibility initially. If other info comes to light that when there can be problems.

According to the Commercial Appeal, The initial certification was made in May. Memphis was subsequently notified that there was a possible error made and an eligibility issue was possible. And that there would have to be further investigation.

My point is I'm just not sure what else the NCAA can do when they become aware that there "may be" a significant rule violation by a head coach. I just don't see that they have much choice in this case regardless of any initial  eligibility granted or ungranted in the spring.

Looks to me like they should have finished investigating and made a ruling way before November....but that's another topic.

    Penny knew.

Penny is a nice guy. No doubting that. He knows his impact in Memphis. He is also from Memphis and knows how things work here. He knew about Wiseman and his abilty. He used his AAU program to find players in the general area and some of them he wanted at East and some he didn't . He also had some big time national players from other areas that he knew couldn't move to East without a huge uproar.

The problem here is the NCAA not the TSSAA. The NCAA ruled Wiseman ineligible after he was deemed eligible and the $11,500 was disclosed. The NCAA is showing their ineptitude and how their egos can be bruised when someone comes in a shakes things up like Penny has.

I'm confused. There appears to have been a significant violation of a rule about boosters. The NCAA became aware of the potential violation. They declared player ineligible and began an investigation. I don't see how that makes the NCAA inept. What should they do  when a violation of this type appears to have occurred?

There are plenty of examples of the NCAA bungling things.... at this point, I don't see what they've bungled.

Coalfield should be alright by tournament time if like you said they get better defensively and stay healthy.

Looks like heading into tourney time, they are healthy... but there hasn't been much, if any, improvement defensively for CF. They stand flat footed out front and smack at people going by on the perimeter leaving tons of open space to attack.  At this point, it just doesn't look like it's gonna happen for them. Biggest team in the district and yet still chucking 3s left and right most games I've seen.... and at a LOW percentage. If that goes on... and Mckinney has a mediocre night offensively, they likely clank themselves out of it.

I could see four, maybe even five of the 6 teams remaining winning this tourney. OD & Harriman I guess are slight favorites, but I could see either ending up 4th.... or 1st. No really strong teams going in.

This could be one of the easiest paths to the state tourney ever for the winner.

  4. Nah, I don't think so. They've played pretty consistently all year. They aren't very big overall and teams can take advantage of that at times. Both the Harriman and Oneida games could have gone either way. AC is mediocre, but still a much larger school.

The district tourney is pretty much a tossup going in, OD has as much of a shot as three or four other teams. I could see them finishing anywhere between 1 & 4. They shoot and move the ball pretty well, plus hustle defensively, but their lack of size could do them in on a given night vs either Harriman, Oneida or CF. All three of those teams are much bigger.

Going in....Harriman and OD are probably slight favorites over the second group of WB, RW, CF and Oneida. CF probably has the highest ceiling of all 6, but it doesn't look like they're going to figure it out this year. Good size, No knock-down shooters, yet they still like to stand and clank 3s. WB is hit or miss....unlikely to hit 3 games in a row. Oneida could surprise a team or two; decent size/skill on the block. RW likely out early, but capable of a win one or two.

It looks like CF is getting a little better now that McKinney is back in the lineup.  It may be a few weeks before he is back in good form.

Yea, he's a plus 25 kind of player for them. That will be be enough in most games in this district. Come tourney time though, they have to be a lot better defensively, cut down TOs and be able to move the ball in the half court. Last night's game, for example,  wasn't that close, but some of their  issues let Harriman back within 10 late.  Roster-wise, they can get there... the district tourney and region look very winnable with him and some team improvements as they go along.

  6. Back in action tonight. OD vs. OS will be ugly. CF vs RW could go either way with the way CF is playing right now, as could Oneida vs. SB

Through December, Oakdale is far and away #1, Harriman #2....coin toss after that...RW, WB, Oneida, CF and SB. WB has been hit or miss. RW and Oneida are OK. both a lot better than last year.  CF has been pretty weak without Mckinney...shooting twenty+ 3s a game ( at a low %) and not playing much defense. They have a good roster, but haven't played like it thus far. SB looked clearly improved to me, but doesn't have any depth.

Coalfield was strong inside as well. Tried to play zone but OD attacked zone better than I remember in past years. Coalfield then tried to go small and play man. You could tell Coalfield hasn't worked on their man much. They got burned watching the basketball several times.. Good luck to you..

CF clearly isn't ready for prime time at this point...that's understandable... new coach, football and best player out.  Defense is a major work in progress... actually, they didn't  seem to have one in the games I saw.  Plus, they shot waaay too many bad 3s to beat quality teams. Must have shot 30 or more in each the couple games I saw. Kept missing, just kept shooting.  I'm sure they'll improve moving forward.

OD clearly the frontrunner out of the gate.... much better second time I saw them. #2 much less clear after that point. WB seems erratic as well.

I think Hicks from Oakdale is playing on whole new level right now. I don't think u can hand mckinney the player of the year plaque without him playing a single game yet.

I think Hicks from Oakdale is playing on whole new level right now. I don't think u can hand mckinney the player of the year plaque without him playing a single game yet.

That's very true, Hicks is playing very well and OD is currently the top team as well. With Mckinney missing a good chunk of games, Hicks may well win it this year. Mckinney won it last year and when healthy, is the best player in the district and likely region as well. But I could definitely see Hicks winning it... and it certainly would be deserved to this point.

  9. Tonight:

Oneida v Harriman Battle of the middle teams?

OS v Midway  Each teams best chance for a district win this year

CF v Oakdale CF struggling early without the district's best player.  OD playing pretty well

WB v Rockwood WB should take this one

Looks like Oakdale is exceeding expectations with 15 point win over Harriman and 102-67 massacre of Wartburg. Even though it is early Oakdale looks to be the top team in the district. Jackson Hicks has to be the clear favorite for player of the year especially after tonight triple double 43points 10 AST 10 Reb and didn't play last 5 min of the game.

Finally got a chance to see OD play. Really struggled with a Stone Mem team that I doubt finishes anywhere near .500

If they're the best team in the district... then the district has slipped significantly this year. (IMO, Would have been 5th, at best, last year in d4a) I've just seen them once, so maybe it was just an off game. But not much size, tallest player that played a lot looked maybe 6 foot tall, 6'1 max with shoes....one impact player with 5 or 6 solid role players. Really miss the Smith kid that graduated. Pretty good hustle overall, not very athletic. Really limited both sides of ball on the interior. Moved the ball pretty good, appeared to be able to shoot fairly decently...

At this point, I'd be stunned if either (WB (seen twice) or OD) wins a region game...unless this new region (with new district 4 )is just really, really weak. Still early though, could change.

Sunbright  failed the first test , didn't start playing Harriman  until second half. Oakdale is looking very, very  good right now!

Saw that, SB lost pretty big to harriman. OD looks like the team to beat with Mckinney is out for CF. They throttled WB pretty good last night. Seeing Wb just once, I thought they were OK, at best. Might get better as the year goes on.  Saw CF twice...they were not very good, to say the least, in their first & 2nd games (WB & Clay). Looked like they beat MW badly last night...not sure if MW is bad or what...but the score looked it.

Have heard the extent of how bad his injury is? I know in his picture the other day he was wearing some kind of boot.

Not really. Speculation sounded bad early on...but last "hearsay" I heard was back by Christmas. 2nd or 3rd hand though. But it did sound like he'd be back at some point.

  13. New district here. Combo of previous 3 & 4A. Looks pretty wide open with GCA and Meigs gone.

Teams: Harriman, Midway, Rockwood, Oneida, Coalfield, Sunbright, Wartburg, Oakdale and Oliver Springs.

Harriman lost a ton, Coalfield probably has strongest roster, but gets a late start practice-wise, plus a new coach. OD is pretty well rounded. Wb has been sluggish early on.

    Matchups start tonight:

Harriman v. Oakdale, Coalfield v. WB, SB v. MW and Rockwood v. OS

    Who wins tonight?

    Who wins it come February?

Going into the season I had this.....

    1. Coalfield

    2. Wartburg

    3. Harriman

    4. Oakdale

    5. Oneida

    6. Rockwood

    7. Sunbight

    8. Oliver Springs

    9. Midway

But I have seen a few scores that may have me thinking things a little different.

    Such as....

Could Oakdale and Oneida climb higher, could Harriman struggle a little bit after losing so many from last year, is wartburg to high, etc

I think the top 5 can make some noise come Feb.

No doubt CF is the favorite roster-wise, but they'll probably start slowly with so many football kids/ so little practice time.  Mckinney is probably out for an extended period, so that will give others a much better shot this year than they had with him healthy.

OD beats Clinton easily for the second time this season 92-70 OD is looking like they're the team to beat in the district

I think anytime a school with 180 beats a school with 1200, that's pretty solid. Clinton is really, really mediocre though, even if they were a school of 500.  But still, I like it for OD.

My definition of a transfer is,a kid at a school  that the bus don,t pass their house. My oldest left his school in the 7th grade and went 30 minutes down the road, nothing illegal about it but a transfer none the less.

Yea, I hear you and agree to a point... but I think there's a cutoff in there somewhere.

In CFs case, one was 2nd or 3rd grader when he came. One of the HS transfers that moved in while in HS....the bus goes by his house...so he's not a transfer? Even though he came from a bad program & largely for FBall? But the 2nd grader is a transfer (assuming no bus goes by)....??? I guess, but seems a stretch to me.

To me, the elementary kid isn't a transfer and the HS kid (just an example)clearly is a transfer whether or not the bus is involved.

Either way as long as it's by the rules...it's fine to me.

I have a open question for anyone to answer. This has nothing to do with the game Thursday.  How many transfers does Greenback, SoPitt, Coalfield,  Cornersville and such get? I'm talking about kids who live in other school districts and attend another school. In Lake County we have not received one kid from another school. We play with what is ours. I'm asking how many kids have attended there respected schools say since middle school. I'm not saying a thing is wrong with it. Just wondering.

Coalfield had two that transferred in HS and played a lot, one that played a decent amount and a couple more that barely played. Some people want to count a couple other kids that transferred in elementary school that played a lot... I think that's silly.

The coaches stay in the younger brothers head. there offenisve cordinator is awful. they said #7 is done putting up with it and his brother wants him at webb. the webb coach loves his skill set.

Based on actions seen over and over in every sport, it's NOT coaches in his head. It's actually  his head. It's the worst kind of poor sportsmanship.

I am feeling a little more confident in this group.. the kids that are stepping on the court as starters this year for us can be a great complete group but I don't see us having any superstars, which I tend to like on a basketball court anyway. I think we will run into each other a couple times the next few years as we have a good class of freshman and sophomores.. we've got a kid who can be a stud that is a freshman

What's the freshman's name? You think he'll get any varsity minutes this year?

I agree, he was holding on to the players Jersey on that one play when he was trying to get up. He has sorta of done stuff like that all year. Hope I don't ruffle some CF fans but you are correct.

No one will get their feathers ruffled, you and C23 are correct and everyone knows it. I heard they've seen it for years. It is who he is and always has been....unfortunately, He has some decent ability, but will hurt the team at any moment with no regard for the team.

I think the Cherokees win this one for several reasons. #1 We are better than they are, I don't care if they have 70 seniors our juniors are better. Coalfield is better at 1 position and that is at QB but Parker is not miles ahead of Bryce. We have better receivers with Willis leading the pack. Our backs are better especially Breeden who is one of the best in the state. And our lines match up well I would take a couple of their lineman and I'm sure they wouldn't mind having a couple of ours. Defensively we match up well I will take our speed on the backend against their receivers all day. Special teams goes to Greenback just because Coalfields special teams are a special kind of awful. And lastly our coaching staff is miles ahead of Henry and his posse . So it boils down to can Parker McKinney beat us by himself????? Yes he is capable of it but its not going to happen this time. These Greenback boys are winners and they always have been since they were crickets, hoppers, cutters and juniors and now in high school. Greenback Cherokees by 21

I can agree somewhat on the coaching, and certainly at RB, that's obvious...the lines are close as well.  But no way at QB or at receiver... GB is solid at QB, but it's still a big gap at QB. GB has a good young WR as you said, but the Jones kid is a major playmaker for CF.... really, really good.  He's the 2nd or 3rd best player on the roster and they have a couple other solid players at WR as well. As a group with the QB, major, major edge to CF in the passing game. Can GB make it up that gap at RB?.... very possible... the decision on which line is better will be made Friday night.

  22. I think the question for this game is which player has the biggest game...Mckinney or Gilbert? In 1A, one outstanding player can often just shred defenses because of a limited #s of athletes.

So, if Mckinney plays great, and Gilbert is stymied to a degree, CF will  win. If Gilbert rushes for big #s and Mckinney is just pretty decent, then GB  wins. I'll take CF 36 - 30.
