  1. Hated to hear about The Big Mighty Ensworth getting beat. As ive said all along ,not even the best team in the State of TN.EAST TN IS TN Football

Glad you have recovered enough from the Vols beat down by Missouri to join the conversations again!  First, congratulations to BA on an impressive win.  Second, time will tell whether your high regard of East Tennessee football is justified.  Playoffs are a great time of the year.

  2. JAFO - thanks for starting this thread.  It has been a lot of fun reading this one during the week.  Giles County has a great program, love the stadium and the fans.  I have been to two games there and the atmosphere is great.  The last game was a playoff game with Bo Wallace playing.  Still the best high school QB that I have seen play.  Safe travels tomorrow to the Bobcats!

  3. Really? Gauge against BA, MBA, and the other Div. I AA schools? Come on Man!

Yes - really.  If FCS wants to know where there middle school program stands in DII then they should compare their program to the other DII programs.  I listed three as an example in the second post.  Still my opinion - FCS is playing DII and this is the standard - not CPA (not a DII school).

  4. Obviously you hadn't seen CPA play much.

I have seen CPA twice this year and multiple times the last two years. Their middle program is weak compared to the DII schools. Friendship will do well - they should use games with BA, MBA, BGA, etc. To gauge where they are.

  5. FCS MS won first game of the season against Goodpasture 26-8.  Good job all around.  Great group of kids ... awesome new set of coaches.

Congratulations - and yes I still think FCS will do well in D II.  My point is that measuring your team against CPA and Goodpasture is not relevant since neither are in D II and I don't think either school's programs would be very competitive in DII.

  6. Volzchamps, I had the opportunity to watch the middle school Commanders scrimmage CPA last night.  I left very impressed with the product.  The future appears to be very bright.

I think FC will do very well in D2.  Just be careful basing a judgment on the CPA scrimmage - their middle school football program is not very strong and is not competitive with the D2 schools in the area.

  7. Its fairly easy to get the "stats" about the number of National Merit Semifinalists and the results of the various academic competitions in math/science/languages whatever.  If you want to use some other gauge or 'yardstick" go right ahead.  If the number of Presidential Scholars is your gauge, then clearly Ensworth is at the top....

The schools themselves know and might  tell you how they stack up to the others as far as standardized testing.  Of course, that figure can be skewed somewhat by who takes which tests and what is emphasized. For example, School A may have a higher average ACT/SAT score but School B may have a higher mean.  That could easily reverse depending on who does or doesn't take the test.  I am  pretty sure that most students at MBA and MUS takes both tests, so their results are probably less likely to be skewed.

So which schools rate "elite" "best" or "better" depends on ?  Ask the educators.  Neutral ones. Would you believe them?  I think they would all mention MBA, MUS, probably Baylor, McCallie and USN. I could be wrong.  Just my opinion based on what I see and know.  An MBA or MUS "reject" probably could get into most of the other schools in DII.  I HAVE seen that happen quite a few times. But the other way around? Not likely...

You can find superlatives at every school.  A friend/neighbor of mine transferred from MUS to our local public "zoned" HS.   I ran into him a few years later.  He had a scholarship to Harvard.  I told him he would have gotten that wherever he had gone to school.  He replied, "Probably.  But there were girls and I learned to speak Russian."  I conceded.

I did not mean to "ruffle the feathers" of any particular school's supporters.  This is a SPORTS blog.   It has long been a point of contention with me the perception of many that the private schools can and will admit any athletic stud that will better some team with no conception  that they must first meet an academic standard for admission, which many fail, and this is higher at some schools than others. Many a superstar has been attracted by the coaches, facilities, reputation, etc of a DII school only to find he can't make the grade academically and ends up somewhere else.

Glad to know that MUS winning knowledge bowl competitions which according to Channel 3 news is limited to 32 high schools in the mid-south (search memphis knowledge bowl winners and the article should come) makes them elite over all other priviate schools other than MBA.  When you have some facts to back up your claims - let us know.  Now, back to football.

  8. There is a "pecking order" to everything.  To say that MBA and MUS are the 2 elite academic schools in DII is not to say that any other school is not excellent academically.  EVERY school has its academic "studs;"  MBA and MUS just have more of them. They have higher entrance standards (thus more better students), higher average board scores, dominate the statewide academic competitions, lead the state in Merit Scholar Finalists almost every year, etc.etc.etc.  MUS has won the Memphis Knowledge Bowl the last 2 or 3 years.  And it's usually not close.

Any data points or statistics to back this up other than your random statements that can't be measured?

  9. Its hard to call the coach with the best players "Best Coach", so the argument will never end.

Considering the barriers to enter Ensworth - tuition, fees, location, academic qualification - how does Ensworth get so many great players from around town?

Simple - kids and parents want to be part of a great academic program that has a very good athletic program.  They take the steps required to potentially enter the school.  The first is applying, interviews, etc.

  10. These players would be recruited just as much from their former schools.

Not really - the coaches want to see how the recruit performs against other elite players - playing in an elite program gives them a better opportunity to be seen in a competitive setting.  The other issue is being seen by coaches when they are scouting other players on the team.

  11. I believe the school losing the athlete can waive the requirement that a player sit out a year. I can't speak to Hurd's case, but historically i know of several cases where MBA has waived the requirement for a player leaving the school. In this case, MBA would have had no real reason to object to his immediate eligibility, since Beech and MBA don't compete against one another.

    TSSAA.com - there is a rulebook.

  12. Maryville resident David Douglas, former Rhea County, U.T., and Cincinnati Bengals football player and father of the late Aaron Douglas has a serious health issue.....

I ask that everyone please take the time out to pray for David's healing and comfort, for his wife Karla for comfort and strength and for his young daughter Ashley Jane....

I can not imagine the grief and tragedy that this family has experienced and I know of nowhere else to go, but to the Good Lord in such times of distress...............................

Stars - thanks for posting this - really helps put everything in the proper perspective. I am definitely praying for the family. BTW - my wife still thinks I spend way too much time reading your posts.

  13. Bowers best coach? No way, not even close.

"not even close" is a phrase that is hard for me to define. Seriously, if you look at a Coach's body of work (records, state championships, what former players say about them, etc.) - who would you say is the best Coach in DII or Tennessee?
  14. Settle down Drew. I've seen CPA play multiple times. There are a lot better point guards in Nashville and Memphis than Mr. Bonds. When you are playing with 2 top 30 players for their class and a great shooter in Allsmiller the last 2 seasons, you are going to look the part.

    Corn Elder or Braxton Bonds?

Having watched both players on multiple occasions - my choice is Corn Elder. The debate over Braxton Bonds playing at the next will be settled soon enough along with the question of whether CPA repeats. Simply choosing between the two and what they contribute - one vote from me for Mr. Elder.

  15. I agree on Ethan, but Mikey Minor played for an A school. If you have the talent, you'll be found. E divided his summers with AAU basketball early on in his high school career but he's been to quite a few showcases in the last year. I think most baseball guys know about him going into his senior Spring. I'm excited about his opportunities. He is a great, great kid.

Also, while I don't usually respond to these 'best ___________' posts because they just appear to be self serving, I think it's fair to divide the outfield into the 3 components. They are different positions. Left field never has to throw the ball to first base, so you can put a really good glove guy with a so so hose out there and keep baserunners honest. Great center fielders cover gap to gap and beyond. Good range and good arm required. Great right fielders have cannons. I think the most exciting play in baseball is the fastest guy on one team rounding second and headed for third when the right fielder is about to come out of his crow hop and unload. They are 3 unique positions just like 2nd base has different requirements than shortstop. Best speed in center, best arm in right, big bat in left if you are prioritizing tools. While most T-Ball Moms don't understand the logic, you put a guy in right field for one reason and it's not to punish him.

Great post - you have clearly spent some time on the baseball field. I totally agree you have assess all three outfield positions differently.
