  1. KLIPPAN, Sweden – The United States won five medals in the Senior division of the Klippan Lady Open, which was held on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday featured the repechage rounds and medal matches. Capturing silver medals for Team USA were be Sara Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind./King College) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Julia Salata (Canton, Mich./King College) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Both won two matches on Saturday to qualify for Sunday’s finals. Hildebrandt was pinned by World champion Sofia Mattsson of Sweden in 2:54 in the gold-medal bout. Salata was defeated in the finals by Svetlana Babushkina of Russia, 0-6, 1-4. Three U.S. wrestlers bounced back from losses on Saturday to claim bronze medals on Sunday: Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill./New York AC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Haley Aguello (Lockport, Ill./New York AC) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. Golston, a two-time Junior World champion, won her bronze medal by default over Fredrika Pettersson of Sweden. Augello, a 2011 Cadet World champion, beat Stine Mared of Sweden, 1-3, 1-0, 2-0 in the bronze-medal bout Medina, a two-time U.S. Senior World Team member, dominated Violetta Ponomajova of Latvia, 6-0, 5-0. Two U.S. Senior athletes placed fifth with losses in bronze-medal matches: Jennifer Page (Orangevale, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.7 lbs. and Anastasia Lobsinger (Martinez, Calif.) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. The United States placed a strong second in a field featuring a number of international powers. Russia won the team title with 20 points, the United States in second with 15 points and Norway in third with eight points. On Saturday, the United States won three medals in the FILA Cadet division (ages 15-17), including two individual champions, Marina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. and Regina Doi of Kingsburg, Calif. at 40 kg/88 lbs. The two day medal total for the United States was eight, with more than half of the 15 participants claiming a medal. This was a special opportunity for U.S. athletes, as wrestlers from three age-group National Teams participated in the tour: Senior, FILA Junior and FILA Cadet. Funding for the FILA Junior and FILA Cadet athletes was developed by participation in the new FILA Cadet and FILA Junior National Team programs, which includes education and training opportunities.
  2. Juniors Alli Ragan and Kat Perez won individual national championships for the Lady Tornado while the team placed third overall at the 2013 WCWA National Championships. The Student Center Complex was filled with excitement and raging fans from all over the country for the final day of the 2013 Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) National Championships. Adding to the excitement was a new team National Champion and two individuals from King University that earned their first titles. Alli Ragan and Kat Perez won their first individual championships to compliment their three runner-up placements. Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) earned three wins by technical fall leading into her championship bout against Monica Ramirez (Lindenwood). Though her championship was not won by tech fall, she completed the tournament without having allowed a single point with a 3-0, 6-0 win for her first national championship. In the first period, Ragan recorded three takedowns before cruising to a 6-0 second-period win, stopped with more than a minute remaining. "It's awesome. It was one of my many goals to accomplish this year," said Ragan. "I knew coming into it, I was like 'okay, I can do it this year'. I was seeded number one and I was like 'this is my time'." Katarina (Kat) Perez (El Centro, Calif.) entered the match against her teammate, Sarah Hildebrandt, riding off the emotional wave of defeating OCU's Brieana Delgado (5-1, 1-1). Both wrestlers entered the match cautiously but Perez went in for an attack as the final seconds of the first period began to wind off the clock. With a scoop and a slam, Perez dropped her teammate to the mat, barely inside the boundary, just before the buzzer sounded and was awarded a point for a takedown to win the first. Both went back to a tactical approach and deflected one another's attack attempts until the middle of the second when Perez wrapped herself around Hildebrandt following a reach in and put her to the ground, awarding her the clinching point and a national title. "It feels absolutely great," said Perez. "I've had doctors tell me my career was over. I just sucked it up and accomplished my goals, and I finally did. I'm just speechless. It feels great." "Kat did a great job," said King head coach Jason Moorman. "It was a little difficult to coach. I just let them go out and wrestle each other. She got her offense and won her first national championship. She wrestled really tough. She has dealt with a lot of injuries since she's been here," continued Moorman. "When she does come back she gives 100 percent. This has been one of her goals since she's been here at King, to be a national champion. She has a lot of passion about accomplishing that goal." The Lady Tornado placed third in the team standings, finishing behind new WCWA National Champion Simon Fraser University (British Columbia, Canada) and runner-up Oklahoma City University. The Clan entered the finals round in second place but came back and won the final two bouts at 170 and 191 to overcome the five-time defending national champion Stars, 116-109. King finished with 87 points for a stronghold on the third position, overall. King also featured three individuals that earned runner-up honors in their respective weight classes. Hildebrandt, who came into the tournament as the top-seed, allowed only one point heading into the title bout while accumulating three wins. After a pin and decision win on day one, the sophomore defeated Tiffany Sluik (Jamestown) in the semifinal round (0-1, 1-0, 1-0) with back-to-back wins in the clinch to set up a teammate-teammate title bout. Defending 109-pound national champion Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) battled a strong Victoria Anthony (SFU) in the title bout and displayed a well-balanced mix of aggressiveness and tactical strategy in a low-scoring affair. The former Olympic alternate, Anthony, won the first period with a single takedown (1-0). The second period, both dueled back-and-forth to a 0-0 score, leading to the tie-breaking clinch. Anthony won the draw and chose to take the bottom position. On the whistle, Anthony drove her to the ground for a one-point takedown and the victory, 1-0, 1-0. Sophomore Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.) opened day two with a three-period win by decision over Derri Strub (OCU) in her semifinal bout, edging out her opponent in the second and third periods (0-3, 1-1, 4-3). She matched up against Danielle Lappage (SFU) in the championship round but lost 6-0, 2-0 to earn her runner-up honors. Fourteen King wrestlers were awarded All-American honors for placing in the top-8 of their respective weight brackets. This included five fourth-place finishes (Shannon Constantine, 101; Kayla Brendlinger, 116; Amanda Hendey, 143; Lorrie Ramos, 170; Malexis McAdoo, 191), one fifth-place finisher in Samantha Klingel (116), two sixth-place finishers (Ashley Iliff, 101; Victoria Nguyen, 116), and Kerri Bumper's eight-place finish at 170. Among the King All-Americans, two were freshman (Iliff, McAdoo) and three were participating in their first WCWA National Championship (Hendey). "We really were really to get that monkey off her [Alli Ragan] back. She finally got her national championship and I know she is feeling really good about that. We're really excited to just to start focusing on her Senior USA events. Prior to the finals beginning, the WCWA recognized wrestlers and teams with strong academic standings. King was one of three schools that earned the Team Scholar Award, joining OCU and Wayland Baptist. To qualify, the team must sponsor a minimum of 10 wrestlers at the National Championships and have a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Victoria Nguyen represented King on an individual basis and was named a WCWA Scholar-Athlete, one of only 12 in the tournament (must be sophomore status and have a 3.5 GPA or higher). Additional awards included Simon Fraser head coach Mike Jones earning WCWA Coach of the Year and 130 pounder Helen Maroulis (SFU) was named WCWA Wrestler of the Year.
  3. WCWA College Nationals , Jan 25 & 26th The Oklahoma City Stars, winner of the last four WCWA women’s college national team titles, enters this weekend’s WCWA Nationals at King College in an unfamiliar position as an underdog at this year’s national championships at King College in Bristol, Tenn., January 25-26. Archie Randall’s team has been outstanding during its four-year run of WCWA national titles, but face heavy challenges from last year’s runners-up King College and current top-ranked Simon Fraser for the national crown this year. Oklahoma City has seen a few streaks cut short during the women’s college season this year. Their 91-dual unbeaten streak was snapped in November when Simon Fraser beat them 22-10 at the Harry Geris Duals in London, Canada. Their five year run as the NWCA National Duals champion was halted with a Simon Fraser 27-13 win in the finals in Springfield, Ill. just a few weeks ago. However, the WCWA Nationals is an individual tournament, and the top three teams in women’s college wrestling could all put together the right combination of victories to come home with the team title this year. Every year, the top teams juggle their lineups a bit prior to the WCWA Nationals, and it will be interesting to see the final lineups for these programs. “It’s tough. The tournament has evolved to where we have wanted it all along. We’ve grown to 200 athletes and up to 17 schools. You can break it down and look at possible points, but rankings don’t mean a thing. The number of upsets is unreal. It depends on where coaches put their kids. It’s a chess match and it’s anybody’s game. Most of the schools involved have somebody who could become a national champion,†said OCU coach Archie Randall. Mike Jones’ Simon Fraser Clan brings some major individual firepower to King College this weekend, which collectively could put up a ton of team points at nationals. Simon Fraser holds the No. 1 ranking in the WCWA team rankings this week. King College opened the season at No. 1, and Oklahoma City took it shortly after with victories over King. “At National Duals, I thought our women wrestled as well as a group as I’ve had in 10 years working with them. We are an experienced group and have great leaders. It makes a huge difference. We have had a great year, but this tournament can go any way. We are excited and want to win,†said Mike Jones. Simon Fraser has five No. 1 ran ked wrestlers, four who have won at least one previous WCWA national title. The Big Three for the Clan are two-time WCWA National champions Victoria Anthony (109), Helen Maroulis (130) and Danielle Lappage (155). All are top international stars, with Maroulis winning a Senior World silver medal, Anthony two Junior World titles and Lappage a Junior World title. All three took the 2012 college season off to pursue spots on their nation’s Olympic teams, Anthony and Maroulis in the USA and Lappage in Canada. 2012 WCWA national champion Justine Distassio (170) is looking to repeat as champion for Simon Fraser, and Jenna McLatchy (191) goes into nationals with a top ranking. McLatchy was fifth last year at 155 pounds, but has had a strong season at the highest weight. “Each athlete has to wrestle as well as they can and try to get the highest place they can. At the end of the day, you look up and see how you do. It won’t come down to the big names. The difference will be somebody you didn’t count on. I actually think King is favored. They are at home and they have the talent to win,†said Jones. Oklahoma City also has its own firepower, with returning WCWA champions Emily Webster (101) and Joey Miller (116) holding top rankings going into nationals. Ranked No. 2 for the Stars are 2012 WCWA runner-up Stephanie Geltmacher (143) and third-place finisher Brittany Roberts (155) should score big points for OCU. Three other Stars are ranked No. 2 and could be key to a team victory – Beatrize Martinez (136), Demi Strub (170) and Heather O’Connor (191). “We need to have performances from Kristi Garr at 109, Brittany Roberts at 155 or where I put her, and from Demi Strub, who has had a great year but needs to perform. As tight as it is, we need performances from our top athletes and our seconds as well. Teams will get their finalists, but the backside will win this tournament,†said Randall. Jason Moorman’s King College Tornado will be hosting the WCWA Nationals for the second straight year, and are seeking to win its first team title on its home mats. King has a strong lineup of athletes who have been very successful on both the college and the international level, including some big talents who have the ability to win gold medals. This team was third at the National Duals and believes it can win it all. Two-time Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan holds a No. 1 ranking at 136, but has yet to win a WCWA national title, after placing second the last two seasons. Also standing at No. 1 for King this week is Sara Hildebrandt (123), a runner-up last year. A returning WCWA national champion for King, who is ranked No. 2 at 109, is talented Emily Martin. King has a wrestler ranked in the top four in eight weight classes, and could put together a total team effort that could put them over the top. Watch for Junior and University team member Julia Salata, No. 3 at 155, who has talent and experience. Another possible finalist who recently became eligible and is bouncing back from injury is Amanda Hendey (143), a past U.S. Open runner-up, who is ranked No. 6 but capable of beating any opponent in the weight. “We could end up with nine or 10 in the finals if we wrestle well,†said Moorman. “In the National Dual semis, three of the matches we lost to Simon Fraser went three periods, and if we won them, it could have gone our way. And we didn’t have Sara Hildebrandt in the lineup that match. It should be real interesting at nationals.†The next big battle will be for fourth place, because the top three programs are way ahead of the others in terms of potential points scored at the national tournament. There is not much that separates the next six teams, where some strong individual efforts and a few surprise All-Americans could give them an edge in the standings. Tony DeAnda’s Jamestown College is ranked No. 4 this week, its highest ranking since the program was developed. Although none of his Jimmie wrestlers are ranked in the top two of their classes, there are some athletes capable of reaching the semifinals or beyond. No. 3 Shai Mason (136), No. 3 Lillia Gudzyuk (170), No. 4 Amy Fearnside (109) and No. 4 Christina Zamora (155) could make an impact at nationals. Toccara Montgomery’s Lindenwood Lions, currently ranked No. 5, and Carl Murphree’s Missouri Valley College Vikings, sitting at No. 6, bring some strong individual talents to the party. Rachel Shannon (143) of Lindenwood holds a No. 1 ranking going into the weekend after a strong season. 2011 WCWA nationals champion Shauna Isbel of Lindenwood is ranked No. 2 behind World medalist Helen Maroulis at 130 pounds and is a top talent. Missouri Valley’s Jacarra Winchester (116) holds a No. 2 ranking and has had a very strong season. Veteran star Randi Beltz (130) and Brittany Faust (123) are third ranked for the Vikings, and capable of reaching the finals with a peak performance. Missouri Valley had its best season in years, and was fourth at the National Duals just a few weeks ago. Rounding out the top 10 teams in the newest rankings are Missouri Baptist at No. 7, the Univ. of the Cumberlands at No. 8, Wayland Baptist at No. 9 and Menlo College at No. 10. Each team has its share of All-American hopefuls. Of this group of teams, Alaina Berube’s Cumberlands squad has perhaps the most experience and potential, but will need strong efforts by veterans Opelia Felipe (101), Cianah Hee (130), Kerstin Harmon (136) , Lauren Louive (143) and Sydney Nelson (155) to climb into the top few teams rather than down in the pack. This will be the 10th year of women’s college national tournaments, and the thing that makes this so interesting is the size of the tournament and the amount of depth in each weight class. If all of the teams competing on the U.S. women’s college scene show up, there could almost 20 different programs represented with as many as 200 entries. Due to the growth of the field, the event will now be held over two days. Some of the teams will be relatively new, in either their first or second year of fielding women’s teams. Add in the talent from the larger field, and becoming an All-American becomes even more difficult. 5. Heading into the week of the WCWA National Championships, the association released its second set of rankings this season placing the Lady Tornado third in the country. The Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) released its second set of national rankings on Monday, Jan. 21. The King Lady Tornado fell to No. 3 in the country while boasting two individuals ranked No. 1 in the country. Simon Fraser University took over the top spot in the team rankings while Oklahoma City University places second heading into this weekend's WCWA National Championships, hosted at King. Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) and Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) both reside as individual favorites in their respective weight classes. Ragan, who returned to action on Dec. 1 in a dual against University of the Cumberlands, has dominated since her return and has held on to her No. 1 ranking in the 136-pound category with ease. Fellow Junior World participant Sarah Hildebrandt has had a consistent collegiate season and remains No. 1 at 123. Defending National Champion Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) is currently second at 109 behind Simon Fraser's Vicky Anthony who took an Olympic redshirt year in 2011-12. King has a total of 16 individuals ranked in the top-10 over the 10 weight classes represented by the WCWA. Other notable rankings include Julia Salata (3rd, 155), Kayla Brendlinger (3rd, 115), Lorrie Ramos (4th, 170), and freshman Malexis McAdoo (4th, 191). The Lady Tornado have four individuals ranked fifth in their divisions. Complete individual rankings are listed below. As a result of their individual placements, King currently ranks third in the WCWA team polls heading into the National Championship weekend. The Lady Tornado fell two places after holding the No. 1 spot through the majority of the collegiate season. Simon Fraser (British Columbia) sits atop the national rankings, paced by five No. 1-ranked individuals – Vicky Anthony at 109 pounds, Helen Maroulis at 130, Danielle Lappage at 155, Justina DiStasio at 170 and Jenna McLatchy at 191. The Clan ended Oklahoma City University's dual winning streak at 75 and unbeaten string at 90-0-1 with a 22-10 victory Nov. 17 in the Harry Geris Duals in London, Ontario. Simon Fraser also captured the NWCA National Duals title Jan. 13 in Springfield, Ill., defeating the five-time defending tournament champion Stars 27-13. Four-time defending national champion Oklahoma City University holds the No. 2 spot. Jamestown (N.D.) is fourth, and Lindenwood (Mo.) rounds out the top five in the team ratings. In the 2012 WCWA Championships, Simon Fraser finished third place while DiStasio won the 170-pound title. The Stars won the national championship behind six individual national champions. King finished second overall and posted two individual national champions (Emily Martin, Krista Revelle). The 2013 WCWA National Championships will be hosted by King inside the Student Center Complex (Bristol, Tenn.) on Jan. 25-26. Complete information regarding the championships will be provided at www.KingTornado.com. Women's College Wrestling Association Rankings TEAM RANKINGS 1. Simon Fraser (British Columbia) 2. 6. Ten years of women’s college national wrestling tournaments to be held at King College in Bristol, TN The 2013 WCWA Women’s College Nationals, set for King College in Bristol, Conn., Jan. 25-26, marks the 10th year that national tournaments have been held for U.S. women’s college wrestling. When this year’s competition is completed, there will be a full decade of women’s college champions and All-Americans in freestyle wrestling in our nation. The Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) was formed by the college coaches in the 2007-2008 season, with its first official national tournament held in 2008 in Oklahoma City, Okla. This organization developed a set of bylaws, elected officers, set competition and eligibility rules for the sport, and has been instrumental in the impressive growth of women’s college wrestling. There could be as many as 20 teams represented at King College this weekend, with the most competitive field of athletes in history. However, prior to the formation of the WCWA, there were four years of women’s college national tournaments held, also organized by the coaches in the sport. The first Women’s College Nationals was held at Missouri Valley College in 2004, and the team title was won by host Missouri Valley, led by four individual champions. Historians will note that women’s college wrestling history goes back even farther, to the late 1990s when the University of Minnesota – Morris, under head coach Doug Reese, started the first women’s college varsity wrestling program. Other U.S. colleges developed women’s varsity teams shortly after, including Missouri Valley College, the University of the Cumberlands, Menlo College, Neosho County CC and Pacific University among the trailblazers. Cal-State Bakersfield added women to their men’s varsity program and also competed nationally. In the early years, these colleges competed mostly in USA Wrestling national and international women’s events, and also entered events with Canadian women’s college teams. Missouri Valley College was the early power on the women’s college scene, with many athletes who went on to major success on the Senior level, including World champion and Olympic medalist Clarissa Chun and two-time World team member Leigh Jaynes. Some of the early teams at Pacific had great talent, including Olympian Tela O’Donnell and World medalist Sally Roberts. The Cumberlands produced one of the nation’s top stars in Olympian and World medalist Toccara Montgomery. UM-Morris produced World medalist Katie Downing. Neosho County CC developed Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller and World Team member Mary Kelly, both who later transferred to McMurray College, which started a women’s team. All of these athletes competed as varsity athletes at their universities on women’s-only wrestling teams. At the time, there were a few talented women wrestlers who competed on their men’s varsity teams and wrestled on the USA Wrestling Senior national circuit. Among them were 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann (Lock Haven), 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda (Stanford), 2003 World bronze medalist Jenny Wong (Lock Haven) and World Team member Erin Tomeo (Lock Haven). Women’s college rankings were developed by USA Wrestling for both the U.S. women’s college athletes and teams, as well as a different ranking of North American women’s college athletes and teams which included the Canadian programs. Included were both women on all-women’s varsity and club teams, and women who were on men’s varsity teams. It was in this environment that the coaches of the women’s college teams decided that they wanted their own college national championship in 2004. Missouri Valley volunteered to host it, and the first true women’s college national wrestling champions were crowned. Among the stars of that first women’s college tournament was Toccara Montgomery of the Cumberlands, who later made the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, and Sara Fulp-Allen of Menlo, who was a U.S. Senior Open champion and made the Senior National Team many times. This women’s college tournament was held for three more years, hosted at Menlo College (2005), the University of the Cumberlands (2006) and Pacific University (2007). The first three-time women’s college national champions came from these four events, when Sara Fulp-Allen of Menlo College and Alaina Berube of the Univ. of Cumberlands won titles, although not consecutively. Fulp-Allen won hers in 2004, 2005, 2007, while Berube’s came in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Two of these athletes from this era are now head coaches of women’s college programs, Montgomery at Lindenwood Univ. and Berube at the Univ. of the Cumberlands. By 2008, new colleges were getting involved in women’s wrestling, including Oklahoma City University, which was coached by USA Wrestling leader Archie Randall. Working with the other coaches, Randall helped organize the structure of the WCWA, and agreed to host its first national championship. In one of the closest team races of women’s college history, Kip Flanik’s Cumberlands team edged Randall’s OCU squad by just one point to claim the first WCWA national title. Among the stars on that WCWA champion Patriot team was Jessica Medina, who became a two-time U.S. World Team member. Another champion at that first WCWA Nationals in 2008 was Kelsey Campbell, who competed with the men’s team at Arizona State. It was her second college national title, after winning the previous year when the women’s nationals were hosted at Pacific. Campbell went on to earn a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. This year’s WCWA Nationals will be the sixth since the formation of the organization. Colleges which have hosted the event include Oklahoma City, Missouri Valley, Menlo College and King College. After just missing the title in its first year, Oklahoma City has run off four straight WCWA National team titles, raising the bar for the rest of the programs on the college scene. In 2009, one of the colleges joining the WCWA was Canadian college power Simon Fraser. The Clan has become one of the strongest teams in the WCWA, with a number of individual national champions and a high placement in the team standings. Since then, Simon Fraser’s entire athletic department has joined the NCAA, and will be competing against American teams in all sports. Two more three-time college national champions have emerged in the WCWA era, both from the Oklahoma City Stars. Michaela Hutchison won her national titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012, and was second in 2011. Brittany Delgado won her three titles in a row (2010, 2011, 2012), after placing third as a freshman. Three current members of Simon Fraser’s team have a chance to become three-time WCWA national champions this year with victories at the nationals at King College: Victoria Anthony, Helen Maroulis, and Danielle Lappage. All three have outstanding international achievements outside of the college ranks. Anthony and Maroulis are U.S. citizens who went north of the border for college. Maroulis, who won her first college title for Missouri Baptist before transferring to Simon Fraser, was a 2012 World silver medalist for the USA. Anthony won two Junior World titles for the United States. Lappage, a Canadian citizen, is a past Junior World champion. When all of the champions are crowned on Saturday night, there will be a full decade of women’s college wrestling in the history books. Looking forward, many questions remain to be answered. Will there be a four-time WCWA national champion and who will it be? What other teams will join the elite list of national champion programs? How many more teams will add women’s college wrestling? Who will be the next athlete to make an Olympic team who competed in U.S. women’s college programs? We will just have to wait and see what the answers are. 15. King Ranked No. 1 in WCWA Rankings for First Time in School History The WCWA College preseason rankings were released on Tuesday night. For the first time in school history, King held the top spot while two held individual No. 1 rankings. BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the first time in its four-year history, the King College Women's Wrestling team has achieved a WCWA national No. 1 ranking. In the Women's College Wrestling Association (WCWA) preseason poll released Tuesday night, the King Lady Tornado was named the No. 1 team in the nation while two of its individuals were tabbed preseason favorites in their respective weight classes. The preseason rankings naming King the top team in the country marks the first time King held the No. 1 spot in its history. The Lady Tornado dethroned the four-time defending team champion Oklahoma City University Stars who had possessed the top spot for much of the time since the WCWA's inception. The Stars are ranked second in the country with Lindenwood, Simon Fraser, and Cumberlands rounding out the top-5, in that order. The team rankings are constructed as a by-product of the individual rankings. King and OCU both have two returners ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes, but the Tornado's depth at multiple divisions helped them achieve a higher team ranking than the defending champions. Junior World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt was named the No. 1 wrestler at the 123-pound division. The sophomore from Granger, Ind. was the runner up in her weight class at the 2012 WCWA Championships and was one of the three participants at the most recent Junior World Team Championships in Pattaya, Thailand in September. Also ranked the top wrestler in her weight class was sophomore Krista Revelle (Meriden, Kan.) in the 136-pound division. Revelle stormed onto the scene last year and in her first collegiate competition advanced all the way to the 136-pound championship match where she defeated Stephanie Geltmacher for the title. She met teammate Alli Ragan in the 136-pound finals at the 2012 Body Bar Championship but lost, placing her in the Junior Pan-Am games. Due to an injury, she was unable to compete but has all the motivation and health to return to defend her title. Defending national champion Emily Martin(Frisco, Texas) was granted an extra year of eligibility by the WCWA and will also get the chance to defend her title in the 109-pound division. She comes in ranked the No. 2 wrestler in her weight class after the return of Simon Fraser's Victory Anthony, who took an Olympic redshirt last year. Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) enters the 2012-13 season ranked No. 2 in the 143-pound division and will attempt to improve upon her runner-up finish at the 2012 WCWA Championships. Other notable individual placements include Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.) who currently ranks third at 155 pounds. Katarina Perez (130#), Amber Floyd (191#), and Shannon Constantine (101#) all are ranked third in their respective weight classes. King has a stronghold on the 116- and 123-pound weight classes, placing three inside the top-10 of each. A total of 17 individuals from the Lady Tornado team were ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight class, including freshmen Malexis McAdoo (Amarillo, Texas) at 191 pounds and Marina Sanchez (Riverside, Calif.) at 101 pounds. McAdoo Sanchez is the only King freshman to receive a preseason ranking. King will engage in their annual Navy vs. Scarlet intrasquad match on Oct. 9 and begin their season on Oct. 20 in a classic No. 1 versus No. 2 dual match with the Oklahoma City Stars in Oklahoma City. King's lone home meet will be held on Nov. 3 when they host Missouri Baptist and No. 5 Cumberlands. For more information go to www.themat.com. COMPLETE TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS 101 pounds 1.
